Astrological patterns play a significant role in shaping personalities, with seven distinct chart patterns identified by American astrologer Marc Edmund Jones (1888-1980). These patterns involve the placement of planets within a chart, such as Seesaw, Bowl, Bucket, Splash, Bundle, Locomotive, and Splay configurations. The geometric nature of aspect patterns is expressive and symbolic, revealing an underlying framework. They serve as guiding stars, helping us navigate the complexities of our charts and offer a holistic understanding of one’s astrological DNA.
A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map that shows where the planets were on the zodiac sky at the time of birth. Astrology charts contain the secret codes to one’s unique blueprint and path of personal growth, hidden in the language of astrology. The ascendant symbolizes the surface personality, while the descendant represents the approach to marriage and partnerships. The midheaven, or midheaven, represents the underlying structure of the chart.
Aspect patterns, which consist of three or more planets configuring in different ways, are recognized patterns produced by the distribution of planets in a chart. Birth chart shapes are created by the placement of the planets in the chart at the time of birth. Patterns like grand trines, T-squares, and stelliums can offer insights into an individual’s inherent strengths, challenges, and life themes.

Do chart patterns really work?
Chart patterns can provide valuable insights, but traders should also consider a more holistic approach that includes fundamental analysis and market sentiment considerations. Exness (SC) Ltd, a Securities Dealer registered in Seychelles, is authorized by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) in South Africa. Exness B. V., a Securities Intermediary registered in Curaçao, is authorized by the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) and the Financial Services Commission (FSC) in BVI. Both companies have their registered offices in different locations. It is essential for traders to consider these factors when making informed decisions when trading.
What is the theory behind chart patterns?
Reversal patterns indicate a potential change in the direction of a trend, suggesting it is losing momentum. Common reversal patterns include head and shoulders, double tops, and double bottoms. Continuation patterns indicate a pause in the current trend before it resumes, suggesting it will continue after the pattern is formed. Identifying these patterns on a trading chart helps traders gain insight into potential future price movements and adjust their strategies accordingly. Common traditional reversal chart patterns include triangles, flags, and pennants.
What is the rarest pattern in astrology?
The Grand Cross, or Grand Square, is a rare natal chart aspect in astrology where four personal planets are separated by 90 degrees on the birth chart, forming a square shape and cross. Each of the four elements of astrology is represented in this cross, with all signs sharing the same modality. The Grand Cross’s energy is conflicting due to the tense and oppositional square aspect, which can create difficulties for the native. This is particularly relevant for those in the Angular, Cadent, or Succedent Houses, as squares and oppositions can create difficulties in finding love.
What is the most reliable chart pattern?
The Head and Shoulders pattern is a well-known reversal pattern utilized by traders, comprising two distinct types: top and bottom. The top signalizes the conclusion of an uptrend, with an 81% success rate, an average decline of 16, and a 51% percentage meeting target. The duration of these patterns can range from weeks to months.
What are the 7 chart shapes in astrology?
Birth chart shapes, created by placing planets at birth, are categorized into seven distinct patterns: seesaw, bowl, bucket, splash, bundle, locomotive, and splay. Astrologer Marc Edmund Jones, known as the “Dean of Astrology”, explains the meanings and effects of these patterns in the natal chart. Understanding and interpreting these shapes is crucial for accurate birth chart interpretation.
What is the most accurate form of astrology?
Nādi Astrology is a detailed and accurate method of predicting the future based on the combined results of all sixteen divisional charts. However, it requires precise birth time and knowledge of genuine Nādi texts, which are often unpublished and kept secret by custodians. This is similar to Samhitā texts in north India, such as Bhrigu Samhitā or Rāvana Samhitā. Atma, the’real’ self, is immortal and characterizes the real self. It changes only to the physical bodies during common stages such as birth, childhood, teenage, adulthood, old age, and death.
Atma enters a different body based on one’s Karma and takes form based on their good or bad deeds. In Karmic terms, a transition like this is like a person being promoted or demoted based on their sincerely, honest, and efficient work in an organization.
What is a chart pattern in astrology?
The chart displays patterns created by the distribution of planets, including bowl, bucket, bundle, locomotion, see-saw, sling, splash, and splay. The bowl pattern, consisting of all 10 planets within 6 or 7 houses, indicates a self-contained personality. The lead planet has special significance. Planets above the horizon indicate an individual’s focus on conscious external activities like socializing, work, and ambition.
What is the luckiest aspect in astrology?
Trines are favorable aspects in astrology, occurring between planets approximately four zodiac signs apart (or 120 degrees). These planets are usually situated in the same element (fire, earth, air, or water) and create a gentle union distinguished by ease and fluidity. When they sync, these planets understand each other, allowing for easy movement with little external effort. However, too much trining can lead to problems, such as laziness and complacency.
The most notorious aspect is the square, which occurs between planets approximately three zodiac signs apart (or form 90-degree angle in the sky from our vantage point). These planets are usually situated within the same modality (cardinal signs), fixed signs, and mutable signs. Squares are considered hard aspects, creating tension and dividing intentions, leading to emotional or logistical roadblocks. Despite this friction, squares always catalyze action. They are considered motion-oriented, enabling us to easily identify issues and address them rather than sweeping them under the rug.
For example, when Mars (all about spontaneous motivation) and Saturn (all about rules and regulations) square, we may feel that our passions are being dampened by our responsibilities. However, this aspect also creates an opportunity to slow down and become a true master at our craft through refinement, hard work, and strategic planning.
To identify the zodiac signs that are always squaring each other, use the following list: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius (fire), Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn (earth), Gemini, Libra, Aquarius (air), Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces (water).
What do chart patterns mean?
Chart patterns, also known as price patterns, are a type of charting technique used in stock and commodity markets trading. These patterns are natural and repeat over time, serving as reversal or continuation signals. The most common chart patterns, introduced over a century ago, include Double Top Reversal, Double Bottom Reversal, Triple Top Reversal, Triple Bottom Reversal, Head and Shoulders, and Key Reversal Bar. These patterns are essential for technical analysis in stock and commodity markets trading.
What is the most important chart in astrology?
The D10 chart is crucial for career analysis, alongside the D1 chart. Navamsa is a divisional chart that influences various aspects of life, including education, profession, and finance. The first house, fifth house, and ninth house of Navamsa indicate a native’s talent. Planets in these houses give qualities to the native, which can be developed through practice. For example, a Ketu in the ascendant indicates math and computer-related skills, while Jupiter in the ninth house indicates teaching, guidance, and advisor skills. The Navamsa Kundali can also determine a native’s strength and capabilities. These aspects are influenced by the planets in the first, fifth, and ninth houses of the chart.
What is the psychology behind chart patterns?
Price determination is influenced by demand and supply, which are driven by our emotions. Market psychology, which encompasses human emotions like greed, fear, need, compulsion, joy, and security, is the collective emotional state that shapes price patterns. Chart patterns in technical analysis are a popular trading method, and they are repetitive. Market psychology also determines the behavior or response to these patterns, which is also repetitive. For instance, price takes support at a certain level, and demand is created when buyers become interested, while resistance causes sellers to become active, resulting in supply pressure.

Hi Meredith. I find this topic fascinating. I look forward to more chart pattern articles. Going clockwise, my chart has 6 planets and 2 luminaries in 1st, 12th, 11th, and 10th houses leading with Venus in the 10th house, Jupiter at 19 degrees in the 6th house, and Saturn at 19 degrees in the 4th house. I researched online as you suggested, and I think I resonate most with a seesaw chart, although I do not have a planet in the 5th house. It said “You may feel pulled in two contrasting directions; your life theme may be about learning compromise, being a mediator, or balancing oppositions in yourself.” I feel like I have been pulled in 3 ways, and I have always been struggling with/trying to balance 3 areas of my life. It feels like I have 3 planets that lead me: Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. I look forward to hearing what you will say about the seesaw chart pattern in your next article.
im a woman w/a SEESAW chart. i feel as tho i will not ever have a career, even tho i love lots of different things, i dont have the self-confidence to pursue anything either because i might need money to invest (that i dont have), so i just put everything on back burner and concern myself w/food, rent and my overall good mental health so i dont end up back in hospital from stress
If only I was where you live, I mean I love where I am, Western Australia, beaches, river, sunshine so grateful but boy if only I was there I will be your best student, my Sagittarius rising will take the whole room, just ask Connie Joe she did a readying for me, I was let’s just say EXTRA! 😅🤣 And yes please more articles to learn astrology, you just opened Pandora’s box! We/I appreciate your work Meredith. X
I got a Splash shape with Mercury as a Lead planet in 29th degree of my Capricorn 12th house and a Star of David played by Moon in Leo 7th house, Neptune 10th,Jupiter 2nd, Mars 4th in Gemini,Asc in Aqua and Pluto 8th in Libra. May the universe guide me❤🙏Thank you very much for your amazing service in what you bring to all of us, you are extremely helpful and motivating for a better understanding for our selves and therefore understanding all the others for more compassionate relationships.
My birth chart is a Bucket shape . Saturn ( R ) in the 1st house in Gemini 1degree Moon conjunct Pluto ( R ) in the 5th house Virgo and libra sharing the same 5th house . 5th house starts at 9 degrees in Virgo and end around the 15 degrees in Libra . Pluto ( R ) at 4 degrees and Moon at 5 degrees in Libra in the 5th house . Most of my other planets are on the right corner of my birth chart . Sarting from the 7th – 9th house .
I have bucket planet. 8H saturn ♌️ Leo, I have 10Hpluto ♎️, Uranus ♏️ Scorpio 11h, ♐️12 house 4 planets sun, mars, merc, Neptune, Venus 1H Capricorn ♑️, 2H moon Aquarius ♒️ and Jupiter 5H Taurus. My Jupiter is my handle in taurUs ♉️. Also Jupiter is my ruling planet since I have 27 deg rising in ♐️ Sagittarius. I’m pulled between materialism and spirituality 😊. I think that’s why I manifest material things easily.
Oh, apparently mine’s a wide bundle or a bowl? With Mars as my leading planet and never thought I like Mars and it’s my traditional ruler lol with Jupiter trailing and it’s my benefic! Virgo Mars 11H Libra Venus 11H Libra Sun 12H Scorpio Pluto 12H Scorpio Pluto 12H Scorpio Saturn 1H Sag Uranus 1H Sag Moon 1H Cap Neptune 2H Aq Jupiter 3H – Tropical, Placidus
I Kinda have a bundle within a bowl, I think. But maybe theres a handle involved too. Idk I have moon and jupiter 16 degress apart in ♊️, moon in the 10th at 13 degrees ♊️, jupiter in the 11th at 29 degrees ♊️. The 11th house starts at 28 degrees ♊️ so Jupiter just squeaks in. 36 degree gap from Jupiter to my ♌️ sun at 5 degrees. Then from 5 degrees ♌️ in the 12th house to 5 degrees ♍️ in the 1st house, I have sun, mercury, mars (exactly conjunct the south node) and venus. All 9 to 11 degrees apart from one another within that 30 degree span. Then theres a gap of 67 degrees from venus to my ♏️ pluto in the 3rd house at 12 degrees. From the moon to pluto is 149 degrees with only the 2nd house “empty”. I do have a stellium in the 5th with Uranus at 2 degrees ♑️, Saturn at 8 degrees ♑️ and Neptune at 10 degrees ♑️ (all retrograde and intercepted). Idk if they would count as a handle since uranus is a lil more seperated from the saturn neptune conjunction. But that neptune is sextile to pluto (58 degrees) and also quincunx the moon (153 degrees) forming a yod. No idea how to make sense of all that 😅😅….commented after perusal the bowl part and i guess its bucket for me after all lol.
I AM SO CURIOUS!!! I have a locomotive. Mars in the 8th house, Gemini, is, if I understand it correctly, my leading planet. My trailing planet is Pluto in the first house Scorpio. I am a Scorpio rising. I don’t know, since my knowledge of astrology doesn’t reach that far, but that sounds quite intense. Soooooo curious!!!!!!
I’m curious about mine, it shows a cradle pattern, half of a star of David… “Empty houses” at 2,6-9, and 12. More to study. 🙁 Upon closer inspection, it appears like a locomotive led by Venus at the MC (Aries) with a huge gap on either side of Saturn at the ascendant in Leo and trailed by Neptune in the 5th (Sag)…. Hmmm…. But the trine orb is wide (around 14 degrees)
I have either a fan or a bucket. Jupiter as handle in house 12 (Cancer, almost conjunct the ascendant). And then Pluto in house 5 (Scorpio) with all the planets hanging out up to Venus in house 7 (Capricorn). So if I understand correctly: Jupiter is the leading planet in the handle, and in the bucket/fan – I’m not sure: Pluto or Venus?
If it’s okay, I have a question! 8 of my planets are in a pretty tight bundle, no more than 81°. And the other 2 planets are across the chart, but 67° away from one another. I know when they are that far, it technically is not a bucket or a fan. But is there another pattern that would fit that I can research? Thank you so much for all that you share!!
Meredith, thanks so much for another great article! I have a locomotive pattern led by Saturn in Pisces (5th House), but my Saturn is conjunct Chiron, which actually leads my Saturn (orb 3). Can you tell me why Chiron isn’t included in the chart patterns? And what effect does this Chiron-Saturn conjunction in the 5th house have, since this is the engine of my locomotive.
