What Does Astrology’S Sani Dasa Mean?

Shani Dasha is a term used in Vedic astrology to describe a specific phase or period in a person’s life when the planet Saturn’s influence becomes predominant. Saturn, often considered a strict taskmaster, is associated with discipline, responsibility, and lessons in life. The Shani Dasha Calculator analyzes an individual’s birth details using Vedic astrological principles and specific algorithms to calculate the Dasha (planetary period) of Saturn (Shani).

Lord Shani, the Hindu God of Justice, has both positive and negative influences on individuals based on their karma. The 7.5-year period called Shani ki Sadhe Saati can bring challenges in career. In Indian Vedic astrology, the combination of Budh (Mercury) Antardasha during the Mahadasha of Saturn (Shani) can bring about a unique blend of energies and influences. Saturn, or Shani Mahadasha, is one of the most powerful Dashas in astrology.

Shani Mahadasha, a 19-year period in Vedic astrology, spans over a significant duration of 19 years. Saturn, the celestial ruler of this Mahadasha, is often associated with various aspects of an individual’s life, including career, money, and even married life. The Saturn Vimshottari can also be good.

Shani Mahadasha is a significant phase in an individual’s life, during which Saturn becomes the primary influencer, bringing forth both positive and negative impacts depending on individual karma and the planet’s position in the horoscope. When Saturn is placed favorably in the janampatri, it brings worldly success, such as increased wealth and riches. Saturn represents the final destiny of a person and rules the signs Capricorn (Makaram) and Aquarius (Kumbam).

The text provides various practices to remove the malefic effects of Saturn and Shani. It suggests lighting a diya with mustard oil under a peepal tree every Saturday, reciting Hanuman Chalisa daily, visiting Hanuman Mandir, and using a coconut filled with water to move around one’s head. It also encourages distributing shoes and slippers to the poor and needy, leaving them outside the temple. On Saturdays, people are advised to do Chhaya Daan, filling an iron bowl with mustard oil and giving it to the poor.

Chanting the Shani Mantra 108 times daily is also advised. Tula Daan involves donating grains equal to one’s weight on Saturdays and distributing them to the needy. It is also advised to keep workers or house help happy, as they represent Shani and disrespecting them can give Shani malefic effects.

Which Mahadasha is worst?

Rahu, the planet of luck, can influence one’s life in various ways. A favorable Rahu can lead to gaining ruling powers or governmental favors through falsehoods, tricks, and cunning. Conversely, an unfavorable Rahu can result in losses, mental aberration, hallucinations, and other negative effects. Jupiter, the planet of knowledge, can lead to learning and wealth, while a strong Jupiter can confer wealth, bestow sons, and lead a comfortable life. Conversely, a weak Jupiter can lead to failures, poverty, and miseries, including falling from position and ill-health.

Saturn, the planet of hard work, can lead to service and wealth, but a unfavorable Saturn can result in diseases, poverty, litigation, disputes, family or near-family deaths, obstacles in progress, and a miserable life due to distress.

Which god can control Shani?

The worship of Lord Hanuman has been demonstrated to exert a beneficial influence on the effects of the planetary influence of Shani. This can be achieved through the recital of the Hanuman Chalisa or through a visit to a temple dedicated to Hanuman. Furthermore, reciting the Shani Mantra has been demonstrated to exert a beneficial influence on the regulation of Shani’s adverse impact.

What does Sani mean in astrology?

Saturn, also known as Shani in Vedic astrology, plays a significant role in shaping our lives, teaching discipline, responsibility, and karma. It presents challenges in our birth chart, including Sade Sati, to promote growth and blessings through lessons. Saturn is often seen as a strict teacher, bringing lessons to learn from various aspects of life, including work, health, relationships, and inner selves. It moves through different signs and houses in our birth chart, providing opportunities for growth and teaching patience, resilience, and the ability to face tough times.

The placement of Saturn in our birth chart tells us about our life, such as job delays or difficulties in relationships. These challenges are not punishments but lessons to help us become better people. The “seven and a half years” period when Saturn moves through three signs related to our moon sign is a time for reflection, growth, and preparation for better days ahead.

This period is ideal for personal growth, as it can significantly impact professional life. Saturn’s influence offers profound learning experiences, leading to wisdom and maturity. How to avoid Shani Dasha?

In order to appease Shani Dev and mitigate the adverse effects of Shani Sade Sati, individuals may recite the Shani Mantra and Shani Strotam, engage in Karma Yoga, perform charitable works, worship Lord Hanuman, and worship the Peepal tree. These seven efficacious methods can assist individuals in confronting adversity and obstacles, thereby facilitating their ongoing and transformative development.

What are the symptoms of Shani Dosha?

Shani Dosha can cause financial instability, relationship problems, and emotional and spiritual growth. It can lead to unexpected expenses, losses, and difficulties in managing resources, making long-term financial planning and savings challenging. Personal relationships may also suffer, leading to conflicts and feelings of isolation. However, Shani Dosha can encourage personal growth, inner strength, discipline, and resilience. Chanting the mantra “Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah” 108 times daily, especially on Saturdays, can help mitigate its negative effects.

Wearing gemstones like the Blue Sapphire, associated with Saturn, can balance Shani’s energies. Observing fasts on Saturdays dedicated to Shani can appease Saturn and reduce its effects. Regular worship of the planet can also help alleviate the negative effects of Shani Dosha.

  • I was born in Saturn mahadasha, and seeing problems in my childhood, studies, family life etc. I have to work really hard to be just a normal human being. It also gave me anxiety & depression till my 17 years. After it ends & mercury dasha started i lot healthy amount of weight & being strong enough to not die because of depression. It really teaches us a lot. Glad it was in my childhood & phase is finally over.

  • I had THE BEST period of my life in Saturn mahadasha. I literally had no clue what the word stress means. I had zero worries in my life, I was completely happy or thats what I thought I that time. What a wonderful period. Thank you God 🙏🏻If you knew the details you will say I was not lucky, I was blessed! Except for the school, I had zero interest in it for almost all those years. And btw, I didn’t know astrology at that time, I was completely unaware of it. Ages 5-24. My Saturn is in 9 House in Leo or Magha Nakshatra in Vedic Many years after, I am now addictive to knowledge. I probably read/study 363 days/year. The other two days Im probably in Vegas. ☺ So for everyone out there who may worry about Saturn Mahadasha, I want you to know that there are happy cases also. Please do not worry, do good and more good will come back to you. ❤

  • My father is currently in Saturn period. Life for him has been very hard. With many children responsibility, debt, poverty, disease and illnesses, a cancer survivor followed by other medical conditions, relationship issues. However it seems like he’s getting better after few year I pray the best for him

  • I just came out of this dasha 2 years ago. Im only 17 this year. You could guess how turbulent my childhood was. My parents passed away and there wasnt one second where my home was at peace and quite. But I could remember how hard working I was that I pushed away any forms of entertainment or distractions far far away. But it is hard to find that passion and motivation to work, work, work nowadays

  • Only Mahadasha that has made sense to me! Granted I’m only 29. I have natal Saturn in 2nd (Capricorn, sidereal) and this dasha started 2 years ago — exactly 1 month before it’s beginning I started a vocational education (nursing related), before this I was completely lost in fantasies about becoming a medical doctor or whatever else and had no idea what work and finding work was all about. Now I have a very strong footing in real job opportunities and wish I had taken this path sooner. And indeed I spent over a month commuting to a hospital to practice this work, which was very stressful on many levels but doable. Fast progress, so far, I realized I have strong potential to earn significant money over time. Previous Jupiter mahadasha I got nothing done and was clueless.

  • That’s funny. My Saturn dasha started exactly with my first job. I remember coming home crying because I was so used to living under my parents’ roof and not worrying about anything, and now I had to actually earn my own living! And boy did it teach how to sustain myself through own efforts. Saturn 3rd house Aquarius

  • I don’t think it’s about just hard work it’s also about difficulties coming across your way, delaying events and testing your patience, giving some health issues easily at that time if one doesn’t work hard on his body. I’ve had my Saturn mahadasha ended in 2020 I’m 23 now I also have Saturn as atmakarka and I’ve never had a childhood, I’ve tasted all sorts of poisions at an early age. Not gonna lie I already feel I’m old and seen too much more than I should have.

  • My sadesati, antardasha both clashed during my saturn mahadasha and can’t explain what a roller coaster ride it was. 2 major break ups, first time failed in exam so delayed post-graduation followed by wonderful marriage and a damn good job then from not getting desired respect at workplace to shifting to all together at different location by leaving the job for partner’s sake, then having a baby and suffering from major illness then again coming back to homeplace with my career at snail’s pace and finally transformed into a proper homebird. And still one year to go to end this Saturn mahadasha….and all of this when saturn is in 10th house…..😭😭 During such time I think only because of Corona I thought of feeling good about being at home and not going out everyday even though suffering through illness yet loaded with household chores. Phew..😤🥵

  • Thanks I’m Saturn in the VIII house and my Saturn MahaDasha started May 1, 2015 ends Nov. 2 2031 and i am now 66. I like that I am a Spiritual Mystic. Spiritual world takes care of the Material world. Yes I want to know the deepest secrets of life. love that Placement. Thanks for giving me support in my placement.

  • I’m running through Saturn mahadasha. Things do get delayed and it sometime frustrate me. I want to progress in life but I have to work twice harder and wait little longer than people around me. But if positive things get delayed then I guess negative things will also get delayed l. So I’m like okay I’m not mad🤯😅

  • Interesting analysis. I got saturn mahadasha LATE in life which makes it seem like I am still working hard while many others my age are more financially stable. Spot-on about the 8th house – if I understand you correctly. I have saturn in capricorn in 8th house and I “work” intensely to study the ayurveda, jyotish, meditation, and spiritual matters even though my finances suffer from priority to study instead of career.

  • Namaste A person desiring of pleasing Shani dev should feed crows daily and help elderly people. For warding off negative vibrations, we must offer lemon to Shani dev on Shanivaar which would be blessed and returned back by the priest. Lemons thus blessed can be used at home to ward off negative energy. The prayers to Shani can be offered facing west. Since Shani is the significator of our karmic deeds and provides good and bad results according to our karma, we must apologize to our chosen deity and Shani for our karmic misdeeds and resolve to be pure in actions and chant Shani mantras and perform Shani pooja on Saturdays. Thanks

  • My saturn mahadasha stared when i was around 6/7 and now i have around 2 years left. God my childhood was fairly okay (because i dont remember a lot) but my teens and now early 20s are a nightmare. Not in the sense that something big traumatic happened. But in the sense that nothing good happened ever. My saturn is in 8th house. So even after working my ass of, nothing good came. It made me seperate myself from things/people and live in my own world (only source of comfort) and i did get involved in spirituality. Whatever you just said is actually to the point.

  • My Saturn Mahadasha started in november 2004 when I have 15 years old. It has been difficult as a hell. In my natal chart, Saturn is placed in the 3rd house in Sagittarius, Purva Ashadha Nakshatra, Pada 2 (Virgo Navamsa). I’m Libra Rising. Shani aspects in trine Mercury, Rahu and Venus (lagna lord) that are placed in the 5th house in Aquarius and it also aspects Moon who is placed in the 9th house in Gemini (Punarvasu). My 1st Saturn Return happened last year. Next March I will get 31 years and I will move to another State in my country. Finally, I return to study after years of break. My life since Saturn Dasa started is all about problems. But the Rahu Antaradasha has been particulary rough. Jupiter Antaradasha will start next year in April.

  • I started saturn mahadasha in october 2019 at 30!! I have saturn in 3rd house in sagittarius in birth chart!! Libra ascendant!! My yogakaraka planet!! I hope he gives good results!! My first sati sade happened in jupiter mahadasha with rahu in bad placement!! It was the stuff nightmares are made of!! Jupiter definitely showed why he is a functional malefic for libra ascendant!!

  • Mine started at 12, I’m 26 now and I still got 2 Antardashas left to finish within the next 5 years…😭😭 iM TIIIRED!! IM so exhausted, it’s been so rough since childhood… I just wanna rest please 😫 I’ve been working so hard for most my life (and I’m sure I’ll still have to for the remainder of it) but when can I finally see the fruits of my labor?? 😭😭😭 im so exhausted…

  • My Saturn is debilitated in Aries in 9th house in birth chart. My first 6 years of life was my Saturn dasha. I must say they were golden happy years. I was given up for adoption at birth, but my childhood was gloriously idyllic during Saturn dasha (and on into my Mercury dasha which was generally good as well).

  • I was 9 when this mahadasha started, now I’m 26yo & my life is fucking hard with no career, no job, super hard work with no achievements, only struggles in life!! Losing my mind, losing inner peace, no mental peace, never been in a relationship with opposite sex, a complete failure, frustrated… “I don’t see no light” “If I die? I die, if i live I survived”

  • Interesting… I moved from Florida to NYC on 7-27-1997 and Saturn Mahsash started on 8-15-1997. Explains that it was not just NY that created me to grow up and work harder. I have Saturn and Rahu in the 8th house of Pisces. I think in the last few years I have become more mystical and removed from material things. I do hope more success comes my way in Mercury Dasha?

  • I was just 19 when my Saturn Mahasdasha started 3years starting were terrible, I still 6years left to finish it but I must say it was roller coaster ride.. 8th house in Capricorn ( after 3years,time is changed for real good) im more spiritual learned yoga reiki astrology presently taking interest in ayurveda.. so everything you said is true

  • Just started mines last month! So far starting off my business that I was having set bck last year with! Since mt Saturn dasha started things are getting approved left and right! I have one more inspection but I’m expecting to pass 💗 also going thru my Sadi sati maybe that’s why I was having set back after bvk last year

  • I’m about to exit out of this dasha Ive been in it since I was 5 my whole childhood and early 20s I have been working like hell in my parent’s family business and I graduated with my bachelors in 3.5 years without stopping working so I could graduate with out debt and now I’m in my masters everyday of my life I have felt tired and I’m exhausted by my family. I can’t wait for this to be over.

  • What about an extremely Saturnian person, who loves boring, hard work and to make hands dirty, working whole life to earn their own money, just finishing 55 years and who is going into this mahadasha? It is someone I know, not me. Does it mean, that this person will get a reward? It is a very helpful and compassionate person

  • Okay: I am now into my 5th year of Saturn dasha? I began my life end of Venus period. Each dasha as it changed signs is on the mark with transitional periods of my life. On the mark. But now I’ve been working as a writer since the beginning the beginning of this Saturn Mahadasha? I have (Natal) Saturn 7th house Sagittarius (Transit) Saturn in Scorpio now in 6th house with Rahu (Natal and Transit) How am I able to take advantage of this time period. I have just completed greatest creative work

  • Right now I’m going thru Jupiter mahadasha, which has been ok. I’m hoping that when Saturn dasha comes into play for me after a few months of turning 29 years old Saturn can really help me to get the right job and helps me improve my current situation and hopefully things work out for the best for me.

  • I experienced Saturn dasha between the ages of 3 and 22 years old. My Saturn is in aqua in 4th house. I had an urge to start working as soon as I turned 17. Got a job on the spot on the first day I went looking for one at the mall. Didn’t have struggle finding work. Then my Mercury dasha hit and my work disappeared. It’s been 5 years and I still haven’t really worked like I did during Saturn but financially I’m doing very well for someone who doesn’t work much. But bc I’m still at home I don’t have much freedom. Back to my Saturn dasha upbringing, my parents fought really badly. Almost wanting to crush each other’s skulls. Besides that I loved my childhood. I lived freely and explored around and had many friends.

  • OMG! You are amazing!! My daughter has Saturn in her 6th house and she said she wants to become a lawyer-judge! I though this was a bad house for house because was relate to health, but if this house will become strong through the years I hope it can give her good results in her future, just like my Saturn in my first house…Thanks for the inf!

  • You are very right Kapiel. Although i read your book the speed of light and I have been feeling quite interested into astrology, kundalini meditation and all such things. But its vast, May be because my saturn is in 8th house in cancer however I have Ju and Mo in 6th house. Although Gaj Kesari but in a dusht/upachya house in taurus and may be that would nullify some of the bad effects of saturn in 8th especially related to health and material gains from my regular job. Please throw some Light.

  • Unfortunately my Sat Dasa only begun at 36 years old. How nice… My Jup Dasa ends within 1 month and it were 20 horrible years. I have Sat in Virgo, okay, but in the 4th so I haven’t done well in my past life – I knew that! (I have Sat in my 11th but in Navamsa – in Pisces, however, with Merc :-\\ ). Opportunity to work is all I want! My problem was in lack of opportunity to work and not in the contrary.

  • hi kapiel iam big follower of u to say frankly. i have jupiter and ketu in cancer in 1st house and saturn and rahu in capricorn in 7th house and mercury and venus in aries in 10 th house when i learnt thru ur blogs i came to know that my future is tremendous bt till 15 years i suffered with money and health ofcourse education ok . u said that saturn gives late results but i got job in good company in 21 years old only both ketu with jup, rah with sat are close only 10deg apart.plz reply

  • what if your having Saturn Dasha and Saturn sari sati at the same time? at 00 Aquarius between 4th and 5th house? and sun mars is 3 degrees Capricorn I’m 58 I’m ow too tired and warn out mentally and physically Ketu is in 3rd with tight conjunction to Mercury (moon is in Hasta? } ALL MY LIFE I WAS SAD in horrible situations even as a small child. Ragu in the 9th house.

  • just wanted to ask a question for clarification – I was told by some astrologers that right at the beginning of a dasha of a benefic planet, when the mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord are the same, we don’t feel the good effect of the planet. It is during the antardasha of other planets friendly to the dasha lord, who are benefics for the person too, that maximum good results are perceived. Is this true?

  • In my birth-chart, Saturn sits in 9th house (Virgo), in conjunction with Mars (Lord of 4th and 11th house.) Also, Saturn sits in the nakshatra of mars (Chitra nakshatra). How would be my saturn dasha which will come at my age of 42? Last 2 saturn antardasha was bad for me, as I lost my father and job in previous saturn antardasha…. Pl. do let me know..

  • Please help me figure out effects of Saturn in 12th house conjunct Jp for Tula Lagna in the Sat dasha. Since 12th house Sat as per the article is specially bad for Saturn dasha, I would like to know if possible whether as a Yogkaraka in 12th being with the Karaka of 12th Jp make any diff in the outcome. In D10 with lagna in aries, Sat is placed in Leo in with Sun and Mercury, while Jp is with Moon and mars in Cancer. D9 Saturn and Jp along with Ketu & lagna are in Pisces. 23/6/81

  • Hello! • SATURN is the old sadistic lecher who loves the wiles of Venus. I disagree with the view that Saturn Mahadasha is beneficial for work. If you have Saturn in fifth house in Virgo and your Saturn dasha is on, Saturn will keep job affairs less than satisfactory. And if Saturn only gives you past karma from past lives, then why hope for reward to slog in this life?

  • KRS Bro why this article is in Entertainment Category? Whatever I knew Sat > Sat > Sat will be worse Saturn – Saturn – Saturn (5 month. 21 days 1) hrs. 24 mins.) Whatever may be the strength of Saturn in the natal chart, the native cannot have any beneficial results other than some occasional financial gain. This period will be a period of much menial anxiety and sufferings to the family. The native will be tumbled by the opposite sex. Diseases like fever, wind or phlegm, colic pain.

  • i m vinay, please tell how my saturn md will be ” [email protected] . my dob is 11/3/1973 ::tob is 21:34 :: and delhi is pob. also saw ur article on selection of courier as u said we consider atamkarak,, amatyakarak, 10/11/3 house where as in my chart 10th lord in 8th house n everyone said there will obstacles in courier always, please guide whuch courier should i choose as i m in cosmetic line. n just started importing goods from other countries in part, if this work

  • So true. My husband is extremely hard working. Sincere to his duty. Takes care of me very well. Takes care of his parents very well. Balances everything with efforts. In his saade saati he’s growing so much financially as well as at a personal level. He’s putting in all the hardwork and shani deva is blessing him for it.

  • I am currently passing through Saturn MD and it will end in 2025 March. My Saturn is exalted and placed in 5th house at Libra, I faced problem in career but somehow, I felt Saturn is always helpful to show me the path of Dharma. I am enjoying the Dasha and pray to Saturn to show me path of spirituality and universal love. I always careful for poor people and try to help them as much as possible

  • Having debilated Saturn (retrograde) in 1st and debilated Venus in 6th house (Aries ascendant), I know how life becomes hell and nightmare in Rahu mahadasha+ Saturn Antardasha+ sade sati which I’m going through currently. BUT since last year I’m actively doing Devi Durga, Chandi, Kali sadhana And Bhairava sadhana for 3 months By their powerful and secret Tantric texts, I’m now feeling that Devi and Bhairava aren’t only protecting me but also guiding me along with giving me their more secret knowledge and even abilities to perform 11 technique of Tantra (Maran, mohan, vashikaran, stambhan, uchchatan, vidveshan, kshobhan, jrimbhan, dravan, Shanti, pushti)

  • Since my dhaiya has started, I’ve revived nothing but criticism despite being a high achiever- I’ve been told what do I do. This criticism is breaking me, breaking my confidence, I’ve got severe anxiety and depression . I’m doing many things to make things right with Shani dev, but things still remain. 😢

  • Hii Ranveer I have a request can you please call psychiatrist in your podcast where they talk about mental disorders like schizophrenia hallucinations. It will definitely help lot of people. Because most of the people are suffering from such type of disease where they linked it with supernatural things instead of looking for psychiatrist.

  • There is no supernatural dimension to existence. Planetary bodies do not have human personalities. All these hopes essentially come from the animism and essentialism which thought living thing is living thing not because of what they are made of, but of something separate from matter and therefore it’s possible for other things to be living as well, like planets, even though they’re made of gas. It was a good guess, but it turns out to be wrong and is from a time when our species was in its infancy and knew very little. People like this should not be given a platform to promote outdated superstitions in 21st century. It is a form of extreme solipsism and self-centeredness to think planetary bodies have an effect on one species that has been around for barely 100k years and in all likelihood might not have arisen at all. Leave the planets alone. Really disappointing to see this continuing when India is aiming to be a developed nation.

  • Om Sham Shanaischaraya Namaha A person desiring of pleasing Shani dev should feed crows daily and help elderly people. Til (Sesame) oil should be offered every Shanivaar to Him as Shani Dev had told Anjani Putr Hanuman that whosoever offers Til Oil to Him will get relief from Karmic troubles. For warding off negative vibrations at home, we must offer lemon to Shani dev on Shanivaar which would be blessed and returned back by the priest.Lemons thus blessed can be used at home to ward off negative energy. The prayers to Shani can be offered facing west as that is the direction associated with the graha Since Shani is the significator of our karmic deeds and provides good and bad results according to our karma, we must apologize to our chosen deity and Shani for our karmic misdeeds and resolve to be pure in actions and chant Shani mantras and perform Shani pooja on Shanivaar facing west (West is the direction governed by Shani) Shani signifies our elders and respecting them, supporting old age homes is one way of appeasing Him. Iron ring can be worn on the middle finger of the right hand for improving the significations of the graha Note that we must cultivate deep devotion to Shani dev and not perform worship mechanically or with a sole motive of profit. Thanks
