“Clairvoyant” by The Story So Far is a song that explores the theme of change in relationships and the emotional turmoil that comes with it. The song highlights the importance of recognizing the rights within wrongs and the clairvoyance that comes from looking through the void. The song contrasts past and present states, reflecting on what has happened to the listener in a past relationship. The song also discusses the concept of clairvoyance, where the spirit rides one’s imagination.
The Story So Far is an American rock band from Walnut Creek, California, formed in 2007. They have released five studio albums and have a history of exploring acoustic sounds. The song’s lyrics suggest that when things become different, the good vibes in our lives won’t feel as consistent, and less becomes more due to the changes. The song’s meaning is that clairvoyance is when Spirit rides one’s imagination, but not everyone is clairvoyant or receives clairvoyance the same way.

“Clairvoyant” Lyrics I think you’ll notice when things become different the good vibes in our lives won’t feel so consistent And less …
I always get chills when Parker sings ‘Don’t paint me black when I used to be golden.’ I think it means like “I know that things have changed and we aren’t what we used to be, but don’t make it seem like our memories together were a waste of time. They were golden.” I don’t know it’s just kind of how I interpret it. I also think it’s called ‘Clairvoyant’ because he can like see the future of their relationship and that it’s coming to an end. This is a beautiful song and The Story So Far is amazing.
My 32 year old brother passed away in April from a drug overdose… He randomly texted me the line “don’t paint me black when I used to be golden” just a few weeks prior to that… Definitely hits alot harder now when I hear that line… Miss you brobeans, I hope you have finally found the peace you’ve been in search of for years…
This is why I fucking love music so be everything else. When you find yourself wandering aimlessly through memories and missed chances. Those decisions you were afraid to make so life just passed you by. All it takes is one song that is written with that same amount of intuition and it snaps you back into reality. Life sucks but the joy that comes after picking yourself back up, that fucking connection is what drives us all. You keep going even if your broken and bleeding. Looking back only slows you down.
Life is going to suck a lot. People will hurt you. People will leave you. People will forget you. My life still sucks. One thing I hate is when people say “There are starving kids in Africa, Don’t complain”. To them, that might be the most painful thing they have experienced in their lives. But for me, being hurt constantly by people I trust and being pushed away as if you are just a paper wrapper from a straw. That’s the most painful thing I felt because no matter how much I try, I’m never enough. Great song by the way.
my dad would always listen to this while driving when i was really young (5-7 years old) so i always sort of knew about this song, but forgot about it for years. i recently remembered it completely out of the blue and searched the lyrics i could remember for half an hour until i found it. i never realized how sad it was and how much it hits home now that i’m older. it gave me a bittersweet, nostalgic feeling because this was a really memorable song from my childhood. i really wish i could go back and appreciate those times more. this song played a really big part in my life and i’m so glad i found it again.
I think you’ll notice when things become different The good vibes in our lives won’t feel so consistent And less becomes more cause the weight is too heavy I swim in the water that’s breaking your levee The way that you left me is alright, its alright If I argue the point than we yell and we fight And I won’t be home for the rest of the night You might hate my words but you know that I’m right You know that I’m right This is your life there’s no way to run from it The doubt in your brain or the pain in your stomach I only have but one complaint at the moment Don’t paint me black when I used to be golden The way that you left me is alright, its alright If I argue the point than we yell and we fight And I won’t be home for the rest of the night You might hate my words but you know that I’m right You know that I’m right Don’t paint me black when I used to be golden
I had this girl, and I fucked things up, real bad. And I’ve hated myself for it since then, and this band has gotten me through so much and I love them to death. They make me feel like myself again, and I’ve been fucking sad for a long ass time. It’s never a wrong time to listen to them. I love you guys. Thank you
my girlfriend of over two years recently decided one morning that she no longer loved me and left my life with no closure or remorse. it has now been two weeks since she left and i still miss her but thats just life. you have to see the positive in the negatives and grow from it. this song has helped me stay constant in my efforts to stay happy.
This song really hits home for me. Years ago I was in a very emotionally invested relationship and at first it was beautiful, but over time she had become discontent with who I was as a person until eventually she decided to part ways. Over all these years I couldn’t help but feel like it was my fault and I felt like a terrible person all the time. But I realize now that there was really nothing I could have done, she was reflecting the discontent she felt inside and i pointlessly faulted myself for it…”Don’t paint me black when I use to be golden.”
This song means the world to me. I got the art from this album cover on my arm. I messed up, and ruined the best relationship I had ever had. I’ve learned my lesson and I’ve grown as a person quite a bit. She wouldn’t recognize me anymore, and I’m very proud of that. I hope every day that she thinks about the golden, but I know she thinks about the black. Probably just as often, if not more, if she even thinks about me at all. She probably doesn’t. And I can’t blame her. I’m with somebody else now, learning to love again. I don’t know where this will go, but I’m going to make sure I’m golden this time.
Lyrics: I think you’ll notice when things become different The good vibes in our lives won’t feel so consistent And, less becomes more ’cause the weight is too heavy I swim in the water that’s breaking your levee The way that you left me’s all right, it’s all right If I argue the point then we yell and we fight And I won’t be home for the rest of the night You might hate my words but you know that I’m right You know that I’m right This is your life, there’s no way to run from it The doubt in your brain, or the pain in your stomach I only have the one complaint at the moment Don’t paint me black when I used to be golden The way that you left me’s all right, it’s all right If I argue the point than we yell and we fight And I won’t be home for the rest of the night You might hate my words but you know that I’m right You know that I’m right Don’t paint me black, when I used to be golden
I love music, It’s simple as that. Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning in my loneliness… But I’ve been keeping myself busy. And every once in a while, when I feel like there’s no more hope left for my poor soul… I take a deep breath and search for something new. That could give me strength; To just keep going. It’s like fishing fundamentally. Sometimes you catch a nice one, that can feed you for a while, but sometimes you got yourself the big one. And you hit the rewind button again and again; Full of joy, regardless the fact that’s a sad song. You feel something and that means the world for me. So thank you for sharing the article.
The one thing that amazes me about music, is no matter how varied in genre or ‘Story’ of the song, people just connect. Language barriers cannot keep people from sharing the emotions or even the meaning of them, wish songs were the answer to humanity’s problems rather than violence. At the same time so many interpretations can be taken, because of our own unique view on the world. With this song, one moment i hear a lover lamenting that his relationship is falling apart. The next, i hear a heartfelt plea of a relationship that has ended but he feels that they had weaponized it against each other. This is what i call real music, something where you can take different stories and meanings from behind the same words. That’s my thoughts at least. Anyway, personally i find life hard. It tires me out, i live a life of constant let downs and mental struggles. people don’t give a crap about me, they only care out of pity. Attempted suicide so many times, never received help for it either. People’s idea of help is Small ‘Suggestions’ of how to make it suck slightly less. I don’t want it to suck ‘Slightly less’ I want it (the pain) to end. Sadly this world cares less about individuals, and more about money; people are out only for themselves. The one thing that helps, music, it is my therapy. Doesn’t work all the time, can’t always rely on it. But it’s made a bigger impact than ‘CBT’ or any form of medication has. If music could, i would happily use it to cure the world. So many people struggle with mental health issues, it hurts knowing no-one is looking out for them.
Feels are overflowing. this song is amazing, and true, sad songs bring back the best of memories. heh Everybody needs time to heal, especially when loved ones disappear from our lives in a blink without any real explanation. I’ve been with my ex for almost 3 years, and then she left me with an excuse that me and her became different, when none of that even happened,we always had the same interests and we were happy. Haven’t contacted her for around 2 months tho. I don’t know if she even thinks or misses me. The thing is, we can’t be mad about this, we aren’t mad at them, we are just mad at the actions that they’ve taken. She was such a sweetheart, and when stuff seemed bad, she was still perfect for me, and I didn’t care how mad she was. but I guess almost 3 years is enough for a person to change their views and character. I still love her tho, I always will. At least I can love her on my own, but I wish we got back together. Life sucks, but don’t forget to smile. I’ve been alone almost all my life, and becoming alone again after I got dump ed, well, it was unexpected. I’ve always tried to make other people happy, especially her, I didn’t care a lot how I felt, as long as the person I love is happy. She was my savior. If you love them still, love them on your own, quietly. and smile everyday.
LYRIC I think you’ll notice when things become different The good vibes in our lives won’t feel so consistent And, less becomes more ’cause the weight is too heavy I swim in the water that’s breaking your levee The way that you left me’s all right, it’s all right If I argue the point then we yell and we fight And I won’t be home for the rest of the night You might hate my words but you know that I’m right You know that I’m right This is your life, there’s no way to run from it The doubt in your brain, or the pain in your stomach I only have the one complaint at the moment Don’t paint me black when I used to be golden The way that you left me’s all right, it’s all right If I argue the point than we yell and we fight And I won’t be home for the rest of the night You might hate my words but you know that I’m right You know that I’m right Don’t paint me black, when I used to be golden
This song literally stabs me in the chest and breaks my heart when I listen to it. I heard it pop up on my mix when I was in the car with some heavy feelings and it felt as much then. I cant bring myself to listen to any other music by these guys because Im afraid it might be too fucking much. this song is a pure tone. Work your shit out, love trumps everything and when both people bring love to the table, there isnt much room for anything else. If anyone feels like me, then just have hope, the same person who made me feel this way is the person who makes me walk on air. she brings out my best and my worst, and that is the whole truth of me. I needed to understand that and communicate to her, but little did I know she felt the same. God bless you.
My ex showed me this song when we first started dating back in high school I remember she used to have some of the lyrics painted on the wall and I’ll be honest I’m not too fond of pop punk I actually hate it but every time I listen to this song I can feel my eyes water and I get a rush of memories in my head like our first date and our first kiss or the first time we confessed our love towards each other or those cold winter days we’d spend in her living room cuddled up and perusal Netflix shows and movies or when she took me ice skating for the first time man my heart feels heavy listening to this Eufemia I miss you!! And as much as I’d hate to admit it I still love you!!
I used to listen to this song everyday at one point. I hated my life as it was falling apart; I was going through a divorce at the time. Tbh this band inspired me to persevere and make music again. Here I am years later, wrote my new album recently. I found true love. Sometimes you need a little song to turn yourself around. Sometimes you need something to sing along to and make everything better. Thanks for this ! It really means a lot. Fan for life 🤘🏽✌🏽
I dread listening to this song and cry everytime it comes on, I’ve done alot of stuff I’m not proud of and alot stuff has stuff has happened to me. But all I could was learn from what I did and what happened to me, dont let love get in the way of how u feel, it’ll slowly eat you mentally and just mess you up
Don’t paint me black when I used to be Golden always gets me. The fact that someone used to hold you to such a high pedestal and high regard and then after the relationship ends, sometimes, they usually never want anything to do with you again and paint you in a bad light to themselves and to others. It hurts.
this means a lot to me even as an 18 year old that missed out on the glory years of this genre. life can be new at any time, and I already wasted so much time and had my glory days. now I’m here doing my best. and songs like this provide some clarity and relief; both that someone else has felt like me, and conquered it. such a wonderful song, and such a great band. even for newbies just getting started on this life thing.
honestly this song speaks alot too me spent 2 years of my life in a relationship that went downhill and she just treated me like shit and controlled me and just downed me all the time. but ever since i left it i feel so alive and happy now and i got a girl that treats me so great now and actually makes me feel loved. Just goes to show you maybe breaking apart from the one you thought you loved is the best decision of your life.
for me this song is a chilly night in spring 2015. i was sixteen, i had just found out that the boy who i was so into but who was treating me like shit now had another girlfriend and i was lying in my bed the wrong way round so that i could see the stars through my skylight. and i lied there for a long time, listening to this song on repeat and everything hurt. luckily i don’t care about him anymore but this song will always hurt.
This song hits different when you and your boyfriend were battling a 5 year long heroin addiction and everything you two built together in your life falls apart right in front of you but you’re too far gone to notice. “Don’t paint me black when I used to be golden” has a completely different meaning to me. I fucking love this song. 3 years sober now❤
This song makes me think about this one emo girl I used to have a crush on back in the summer of 2014. She pretty much got me into emo music and helped me fall in love with screaming vocals from bands like Bring Me The Horizon or Of Mice And Me. As of today, Im a full fledged metalhead and punk. I recently saw Ne Obliviscaris and Black Crown Initiate. So yeah this girl helped define my music taste. Not only that, she was also a total sweetheart, loved my company, and enjoyed talking to me about whatever. But I remember she told me how much she hated life and how her parents are horrible to her just because they were too “strict.” I tried to help her by being a friend and I tried telling her that she was over exageratting her problems with her parents because they didnt seem as bad as how she portrays them to be. But she got pissed, blocked me off of facebook, and pushed me away by saying “YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND!” Thats when we went our separate ways. It was a damn shame because I could have sworn she was into me at one point and she was almost everthing I loved in a woman at that point in my life. Fast forward to early 2016, I actually got to talk to a mutual friend of ours and asked the friend for the emo girls number because I wanted to see how she was doing. So I called the emo girl, turns out she now has a boyfriend and moved to Texas. I didnt mind, all that mattered to me was I was able to talk to her again as friends at least. But she got pissed for no reason and said “Why do you care about me soo much?
I know a lot of people come back to listening to this for break-ups, girls, etc. For me, this song nails the feeling I had when I had a falling out with the singer in my own band (perhaps a break up of its own kind) … He treated me unfairly and to my shame I responded with aggression and we ended up yelling at each other, and now we haven’t talked in five months. I miss playing drums with that group of guys but my decision to quit still feels like the right thing, even if I didn’t go about it the right way. It doesn’t make it any easier. I would have preferred we stayed friends when I quit. The good vibes won’t feel so consistent… ain’t that the truth. Ouch. Stay strong people. <3
I love this song so much and not because the lyrics are relevant to me (which they’re not), but because you can hear the pain in his voice and I find it almost comforting to know that others have been or are in as much pain as I am. I listen to it every day and it always brings a tear to my eye because no one deserves to feel like this.
God damn dude… See, this is the music I feel that could change the world. Not this teeny-pop, Lady Gaga Justin Bieber Rihanna Nicki Minaj bullshit, fuck, I just want to grab all of their mindless heads and shove them towards my computer screen and shout, “LISTEN TO THIS, MOTHERFUCKER” The way that he sings, “The way that you left me is alright, it’s alright.” Just gets me every time. You can literally hear the pain in his voice throughout it all, you KNOW when he was sitting in that recording booth, wherever he was, he was thinking about that girl that made him write this song, whoever she may be. Just, the sheer and utter torture in his voice, and to sing in such a manner to say, “It’s alright.” Is the most heartbreaking thing. THIS needs to be on the radio nowadays. THIS is what I’m going to be showing my kids in the future. THIS is real, emotional, raw music, that the world needs to hear more of.
This song was a big part of my formative years between middle school to High-school. Me and my friends did the craziest shit back in those days and we legit listened to this music with some sort of up beat mindset. It makes me sad but happy to hear this song again and I’m so happy I tuned out the way I did. Shout out Randolph middle a hill and Alex Aposto
I just saw them in concert last weekend for the first show of their tour. Let me tell you how many people were sobbing in the crowd. How many people were singing until their voices were hoarse, hiccuping through the words. This band has always been a safe haven. But when you’re there, witnessing everyone’s feelings bursting through, only then do you fully realize how many people this band has helped.
Loss my relationship of 7 years when depression got the best of her and she felt she needed time to herself….probably never going to hear from her again …This and “real friends- given up on you” made me feel something during the relationship and now that she’s gone….it almost draws me to tears.
Id like to say to everyone feeling this way. It will remind you of your exs and it reminds me of mine but guys and girls dont let it get to you. Love them or hate them. Exs are always exs for a reason. Especially with younger people. Just listen to this song and expell your exs from your mind and then youll truly feel the songs meaning. Dont let the past hang over you, guys! Peace out!
A year ago I listened to this song 24/7. I was going through a time period where I was always depressed. I came across this song, and decided to listen to it again. I instanley started bawling. Its crazy to think about how sad of a person I was then. I was angry, sad, and upset all the time. I now feel so much better, but its just crazy to think about how much I’ve changed in only a year.
I’m struggling, I’m struggling to see any joy in my life. I feel like I’m in a constant state of looking back at the past and seeing happiness, but when I look forward all I see is nothing but sadness. Me and the girl who I fell in love with 2 years ago are struggling, I thought she was the one but now I don’t know, I don’t want to hurt her but I can’t live forever sacrificing my own happiness for her comfort. I feel so selfish and feel so much guilt and its destroying me mentally not knowing what to do. This song is like a lyrical mirror on my relationship with her and how the good times have faded.
This reminds me of when me and my significant other were fighting. I was terribly under addiction i hurt her. But the words she said would cut like a knife. I didnt wanna live. She’ll never understand that. I miss the days when we were inlove.(i love her unconditionally and will probably never stop she has love for me but will not say it) we still talk were on good terms but things arent what they used to be that ending line just hit me hard. “Dont paint me black when i used to be golden.”
Whenever I listen to this, I remember everything about him. He’s gone now, and he’s with someone who could actually make him happy. We fought so much it was pointless and endless. We loved each other everyday, until he had to leave because I couldn’t. It was 3 years of concerts, warped tour, sing-a-longs, sex, food, beach days, it was everything, and I fucked it up. I’m so depressed because I always mess everything up. It’s almost been a year and I haven’t left my room, I barely talk to anyone, and I feel like there’s this hole in my chest. I can’t fill it no matter what I do. It just hurts, and listening to this just makes everything ok for a second. This makes everything quiet for me. I’m so depressed and all I want is a friend, I don’t have any. I was told to suck it up and learn how to be alone. Is this what being an adult feels like?
Makes me miss my old friend. We were all each other had but she started changing and left me high and dry. We were fixing each other. She left and came back and I’m still gonna be her friend because she fkd up her life even more and she needs someone real in her life so I’m sticking around. I just miss the old her. It’s like everything I did to help her was all for nothing but we’re talking a lil but at a time now. And now I’m over liking her I just wanna be her friend. Rambling on but my point is this song is perfect
