What do scary dreams tell us?
Studies suggest that nightmares are often linked to unmet psychological needs and frustration with life experiences. However, these links are not always easy to make, as nightmares often reflect our troubles through metaphor rather than literal representation. For example, a person dealing with a stressful move might dream about falling off the edge of a cliff or running late to an important event. Similarly, two people may experience similar nightmares but for wildly different reasons, making it difficult to find a single, clear “meaning” behind their dreams.
Several sources have theorized about the meanings of certain common nightmares, and some conclusions are easy to get on board with. Some researchers believe that dreams about being chased are directly linked to experiences of anxiety, while dreams about being in an out-of-control vehicle reflect a lack of control in one’s life. However, no two people’s minds or experiences are the same, so the best way to figure out why you keep dreaming about something is to think it through yourself.
Repetitional themes or images in dreams include fear, shame, hopelessness, confusion, recurring themes or images, unusual events before sleep, and focus on challenges at work, a fight with a friend, or medical difficulties. Additionally, there may be a specific day or time when you tend to have these dreams.
Why do I have evil dreams?
Nightmares are a common complaint among individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with 80% of those experiencing the disorder having frequent nightmares. A study by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that 80% of people with PTSD have frequent nightmares, with regular nightmares reported by 52% of combat veterans but only by 3% of civilian participants. Post-traumatic nightmares often involve elements similar to the trauma itself, with about half of those who have nightmares after a traumatic event having nightmares that replay the trauma. Those with PTSD are more likely to have exact replays of their trauma, making them a significant factor in the diagnosis of the disorder.
Can bad dreams be a warning?
Dreams, or nightmares, are not considered warnings of potential danger, but they may indicate physical and mental health issues. Research shows that up to 70% of people with PTSD, major depression, and other mental health diagnoses experience chronic nightmares, with nightmare disorder being a significant condition affecting a large percentage of these individuals. Other factors such as negative feelings, worry, sleep duration, and certain health conditions like migraine and asthma, as well as certain medications, can also increase nightmare frequency.
The exact mechanisms behind our brains’ decision to dream or not dream at all remain unclear, but it is believed that our dreams are influenced by personality, imagination, and interests and concerns.
How to know if a dream is a warning from God?
Goll suggests noting unusual imagery in dreams, as God will speak warnings multiple times. This can lead to repeating dreams or recurring phrases in waking life. Writing down dreams can help identify ominous or unusual imagery, such as dark clouds, cliffs, floods, and unfriendly animals. Bridges, doorways, and roadways are also significant symbols of impending changes or testing. After consulting Goll and Parrott, the author revisited their dreams from last spring, which featured buses, subways, and hallways that never moved. They believed these dreams were preparing them to avoid taking a job that put them on the wrong path.

What does it mean when you dream about an evil person?
Nightmares and dreams often symbolize misplaced power and a potential for something powerful yet unexpressed to emerge. Nature, unlike vacuums, does not disappear but transforms. Unprocessed ideas can fund a fear of a boogeyman or enemy, mirroring how we might confront our hidden emotions. The less this energy finds natural expression, the more powerful it colors dreams, adding dimension to our encounters. If we open the door to our fears, we may find our childish and disowned nature, like the Wizard in Oz.
This disowning of our natural vitality creates the idea of good and evil, avoiding responsibility for our lives. Ancient stories at the root of western religion personified good and evil as opposing characters, teaching us that opposite forces drive life in a state of change. The ancient Greeks first described evil as uncivilized passions that were not actively under the will’s control. As these ideas were applied to dogma, the image of evil allowed us to become victims.

I had a dream last night, I was in this building. This building was like a sky scraper. I lived at the very top of the skyscraper but, when I’d go down for food, to go to the store or anything like that, I’d run into drug addicts and bad people. One trip to the store, I made it out of the building without getting hurt. I got back to find a witch doctor living in a gated area filled with dirt, on the outside ground of the building. She was an old dirty skinny native Indian looking woman with shabby hair. On her gate was a voodoo doll of her and her shabby short hair. I was afraid & I told my friend to be careful walking passed her so she won’t see you. Beyoncé walked passed me in a nice dress and French braids pissed bc Rihanna won the award she thought she would win. When I got back to go to my apartment way up, I had to pass all the bad people. I stepped over a drug addict man lying on a blood orange blanket, wearing all blood orange, who woke up and started trying to attack me bc he thought I was stealing from him. I was afraid & I told him “no, I’m a good person from the top & I don’t use drugs!” Then he laid back down and continued to sleep. I made my way up some wobbly tall stairs that made me afraid to look down or I’d lose balance and fall to my death.
