In astrology, houses are a fundamental component of birth charts that represent different areas of life. There are 12 houses, each associated with a specific zodiac sign and planetary ruler. The first house represents the Ascendant, while the second house is the entire zodiac sign that appears at the Eastern Horizon at the time of a person’s birth.
House systems are different modes of presenting the houses in an astrology chart. The Whole Sign House system is the oldest form of house division and has been the preferred method of determining houses for about a thousand years after its introduction. The Whole Sign House system equates each house with one of the zodiac signs, with the rising degree calculated.
Astrologers use various “house systems” or methods of dividing up the sky into twelve sections. Houses represent the rotation of the earth around its axis over 24 hours, with the sun, moon, and all planets appearing to be moving as it rotates. House systems take the sky as a 360º whole and use the context to interpret the houses.
The Whole Sign House system aligns the signs and houses in a birth chart, making it easier to visualize and interpret. The CHANI app uses this system and relates to traditional astrology concepts.
In summary, houses in astrology represent different areas of life, with each house representing a specific field of experience in a native’s real life. House systems are used to visualize and interpret the houses in a birth chart, allowing for a deeper understanding of the individual’s life and experiences.

Which house system is sidereal?
The Clockwise House System is a groundbreaking astrological discovery by Jacques Dorsan, a pioneer of sidereal astrology in France. The book uses over eighty sidereal horoscopes to illustrate Dorsan’s clockwise house system, which traditionally views the twelve houses in a counterclockwise direction, similar to the zodiac signs. Dorsan enumerated the houses in a clockwise direction, following the daily diurnal motion of the Sun. This system, combined with the sidereal zodiac, allows for a more accurate interpretation of horoscopes, unlocking the mystery of the horoscope.
This method, based on the sidereal zodiac, is a significant leap forward in astrology practice, allowing for the recovery of original astrology. This is possible today due to Rudolf Steiner’s indications and French statistician Michel Gauquelin’s research, which confirmed that astrological houses run in a clockwise direction. The English translation of the book includes over eighty charts, both from Dorsan’s original work in French and more added by the editor. The clockwise house system can be applied to both sidereal and tropical horoscopes.
What is the difference between Vedic and Placidus?
The Placidus method, a popular approach among Vedic astrologers, employs unequal divisions of houses, enabling the ascendant to occupy any position within the first house based on its degree (longitude). This contrasts with the approach of Vedic astrologers, who typically have equally sized houses.
What is the Placidus house system?
The Placidus is the most commonly used house system in modern Western astrology, which involves determining the cusps of houses 2, 3, 11, and 12. Most horoscopic traditions divide the horoscope into twelve houses, known as Bhāvas in Hindu astrological tradition. These houses represent different fields of experience where the energies of signs and planets operate, describing physical surroundings and personal life experiences.
In astrology, houses are a fundamental component of the birth chart, representing different areas of life. There are 12 houses, each associated with a specific zodiac sign and planetary ruler. The first house represents the self, while the second house relates to personal possessions and finances. The third house pertains to communication and siblings, while the fourth house represents home and family. The fifth house is associated with creativity and romance, while the sixth house relates to work and health.
The seventh house represents partnerships and marriage, while the eighth house focuses on shared resources and transformation. The ninth house is associated with higher education and travel, while the tenth house represents career and public image. The eleventh house pertains to social networks and friendships, while the twelfth house represents spirituality and subconscious patterns.
Understanding the houses in astrology can provide insight into various aspects of a person’s life and personality. However, there is a wide range of approaches to calculating house divisions and different opinions among astrologers over which house system is most accurate.
What house system means?
The term “house system” is often used interchangeably with “residential college system” at the university level. The house system at Harvard University and the residential college system at Yale University are identical, having the typical organizational structure found in all standard residential college systems. The fundamental purpose of these systems is to divide a large school into small, permanent, faculty-led, cross-sectional, human-friendly components that promote learning and loyalty.
House systems and residential college systems need not be entirely residential or curricular, but rather a body of people. They have members rather than residents, and the people in charge of the colleges are collectively referred to as heads of houses. Each college is a great household, consisting of a few hundred members with a particular organizational structure who come together for a special purpose.
Online house systems can also be established in secondary day-schools or non-residential community colleges. A special Collegiate Way page on online house systems offers some recommendations for establishing such systems in online institutions.
In summary, house systems and residential college systems exist to divide large schools into small, permanent, faculty-led, cross-sectional, human-friendly components that promote learning and loyalty. Online house systems can be established in various settings, such as secondary day-schools or non-residential community colleges, and can serve as a model for other educational institutions.

One may envision a celestial image of the sky at the moment of an individual’s birth, divided into twelve sectors, commencing with the Rising Sign and representing disparate domains of life. What is a system in a house?
The four main home systems are electrical, heating, air, and plumbing. These systems work together to maintain comfort and safety in your home. The electrical system, which takes electricity from the utility’s system, sends it throughout the home. It includes a meter for monitoring usage, circuit breakers for interrupting flow, and wiring for electricity flow to rooms. Common household electrical problems include faulty light switches, dead outlets, tripping breakers, and flickering lights. What is tropical and Placidus?
The gradual shift in the Earth’s axial precession has resulted in the gradual separation of the constellations and tropical zodiac signs. This phenomenon has led to the development of the Placidus House System, which is currently used for the interpretation of astrological charts.
What does your house system mean in astrology?
An astrology chart, also known as a birth or natal chart, is a snapshot of the sky at the time of your birth, calculated from the precise moment and geographic coordinates of your birth. It is a powerful tool for self-discovery, as it provides a roadmap for your life. The chart includes three essential components: the planets, signs, and houses. Planets represent the central drives in a chart, such as the drive to love and connect (Venus), think and communicate (Mercury), or win (Mars). The houses represent different areas of your life, such as home and family (the 4th House) and friendships and community (the 11th House).

📹 Which Astrological House System to use?
A brief explanation of the difference between quadrant house systems like Placidus and whole sign astrology charts. Looking to …
Thank you for this… i learned with placidus and now use whole house system. I prefer whole house now – i find placidus confusing with the split signs – i find it SO frustrating with the different systems…. I used to look at both placidus and whole but it drives me crazy… in whole my sun is in the 1st house, in placidus its in the 12th… argghhh… both resonate… 🙂
Thanks really loved this! I am a Placidus/ (Equal) Houser though I usually use Placidus. I feel it holds true that Equal Is more your potential (also more how you are as a child) while Placidus kinda works for „reality”. However I feel you can always grow back into your Equal and that it might actually be more true to your core self (kind of like an analogy to the Draconic) I feel Placidus is how you come to be due to external circumstances and experiences growing up while Equal is more how you were originally „meant” to be. But that’s just my take 🙂 EDIT: Oh and I feel Placidus works best for transits (House transits!)
Thank you, this was such a clear explanation and helped me a lot! I’ve been using Placidus for many years, and it always bothered me that the houses were such different sizes. I’m far from fluent in reading charts, and I think this might have been getting in my way. I think I’ll give one of the non-quadrant systems a try! 🙂
I receive your blog posts and was delighted to learn about your YouTube website! Thanks for making this article. I’ve used Placidus for the past decade as I really started to educate myself about astrology. Would you be able to make a article explaining Hellenistic astrology? I know a few Hellenistic astrologers through the astrology association I belong too – also follow a few here on YouTube. I find that both Placidus and Whole charts tend to reveal the same themes when I’ve read charts using both systems.
