Rahu and Ketu, the celestial puppeteers in Vedic astrology, are two significant planets that shape our journey through the stars. Rahu is the North node of the Moon, while Ketu is the South node. They form the karmic axis in Vedic astrology and are considered malefic planets responsible for causing eclipses. Rahu represents the head of the serpent, while Ketu symbolizes spirituality, detachment, and liberation (moksha).
Rahu and Ketu are considered malefic planets in Vedic astrology, representing challenges, obstacles, confusion, deception, illusion, obsession, fear, dissatisfaction, and transformation. They represent karma and past life events, playing a pivotal role in shaping our journeys. Rahu represents the head, while Ketu represents the tail of the serpent. These planets hold significant sway over individuals’ lives and destinies, representing karma and past life events.
In Hindu mythology, Rahu and Ketu are considered malefic planets, and the term Rahu Kala is considered inauspicious. Their dualistic nature teaches us about the balance between material desires and spiritual growth. Rahu represents materialistic desires, attachment, and weakness carried forward, while Ketu represents power and weakness carried forward.
Rahu and Ketu are the points of intersection of the paths of the Sun and Moon as they move on the celestial sphere. Rahu is the ascending point where the Moon’s orbit cuts through the Earth’s orbit, while Ketu is the descending point. They are always opposite each other in the sky, and their positions on the ecliptic indicate the alignment of the Moon with the Sun and Earth.
In conclusion, Rahu and Ketu are significant planets in Vedic astrology, representing the North and South nodes of the Moon, respectively. Their impact on our karmic journey, material desires, and spiritual quests is profound and can have positive effects on our lives.

What are Rahu and Ketu in astrology?
Rahu and Ketu are the north and south lunar nodes, representing the intersection of the paths of the Sun and Moon. They are believed to cause lunar eclipses when the Sun and Moon are at these points, leading to the mythical belief that they are swallowed by a snake. In Hindu astrology, Ketu represents karmic collections, spirituality, and supernatural influences. It signifies the refinement of materialization to the spirit, which is both malefic and benefic.
This process causes sorrow and loss but also turns individuals to God, forcing them to have a more spiritual outlook. Ketu is a karaka or indicator of intelligence, wisdom, non-attachment, fantasy, penetrating insight, derangement, and psychic abilities. It is believed to bring prosperity to the devotee’s family, remove the effects of snakebite and illness, grant good health, wealth, and cattle to his devotees. Ketu is the lord of three nakshatras or lunar mansions: Ashvini, Magha, and Mula.
Where are Rahu and Ketu in my chart?
In Vedic Astrology, Rahu and Ketu are significant Lunar Nodes, massless yet powerful mathematical points in space. The solar system takes approximately 365 days for Earth to orbit the Sun and 28 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth. These paths intersect twice a year, creating solar and lunar eclipses. Rahu is the ascending point where the Moon’s orbit cuts through the Earth’s orbit, while Ketu is the descending point. They are always opposite each other in the sky or birth chart, and their function is better understood by familiarizing ourselves with its associated myth.
The story of the Milk Ocean, created by gods and demons, is told in ancient Puranic texts. After a long war, the gods and demons cooperated to create Amrita, a nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu placed the nodes in two specific points in the sky, eclipsing the Sun and Moon twice a year to create confusion and exact revenge.
According to Vedic wisdom, each planet is an expression of our own divine consciousness. The nodes bring together Earth (body), Sun (soul), and Moon (mind), making them among the most influential in Astrology. Rahu is the advancing army, responsible for obsessions and desires pushing us to our limits, while Ketu governs things we have learned well. The Rahu/Ketu axis tells us what we must do to be freed from worldly desire. The study and understanding of Vedic Astrology are spiritual practices that naturally engender reverence for its inherent guidance and wisdom.

The Hindu goddess Ma Durga is believed to have the power to influence the negative effects of the planet Rahu in astrological charts. The worship of Ma Durga has the potential to influence Rahu’s behavior, while the veneration of Lord Shiva may also facilitate a more positive disposition towards Rahu.
Which house is good for Rahu and Ketu?
The planet Rahu, situated within the lagna chart, has the capacity to bestow auspicious and beneficial outcomes upon an individual when positioned within the fifth, ninth, seventh, or tenth houses, without the adverse influence of malefic astrological factors. In the 12th house, it can result in the establishment of a foreign domicile.
Who is more powerful, Rahu or Ketu?
The three planets, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu, possess a unique “Handsome Prince” side that surpasses the other six. Saturn bestows the greatest power and wealth, Rahu provides all world development, and Ketu aids spiritual growth. However, their positive side is often overlooked, leading to fear mongering. Understanding these planets and harnessing them to become friends is crucial. Making friends with the Bad Boys can set one up for life, as seen in a school setting.
What is Rahu in Vedic astrology?
Rahu, a malefic planet in Hindu astrology, represents materialism, mischief, fear, dissatisfaction, obsession, and confusion. It is also associated with science and occultism and is an enemy against the Sun and Moon. Jyotisha, a branch of Hindu astrology, includes the concepts of Nakshatra, Navagraha, and Saptarishi. Rahu is mentioned in scriptures from the Samyutta Nikaya of the Pali Canon, where he attacks the Sun deity Surya and the Moon deity Chandra before being compelled to release them through a stanza of reverence for the Buddha. The Buddha enjoins Rāhu to release them, which Rāhu does. The verses recited by the celestial deities and the Buddha have been incorporated into Buddhist liturgy as protective verses for monks.

Conversely, the Hindu deity Lord Shiva, as depicted in the Guru Rupa form, is thought to possess the capacity to imbue Rahu with positive qualities. How to remove bad effects of Rahu?
To avoid negative effects of Rahu, it is recommended to worship Lord Shiva daily, pouring water on the idol and praying with flowers. Chanting the Om Namah Shivay mantra is also advised. Rahu can negatively impact behavior. Holi, the festival of colors, falls on March 8, while Holika Dahan, a day before Holi, is observed on March 7. People gather around a bonfire to worship and perform Holika Dahan rituals, symbolizing good triumphing over evil.
Holashtak, the last eight days leading up to Holi, is considered unlucky for significant tasks like marriage, moving, or getting admission. Dr. Mrityunjay Tiwari, head of the astrology department of Shri Kallaji Vedic University, believes that the negative effects of Rahu will be most prominent on Holika Dahan.
How to identify Rahu Ketu?
Rahu and Ketu are the two nodes of the Moon, located 180 degrees apart. They form the karmic axis in a Vedic astrology chart, indicating the types of karmas experienced and areas of life to focus on. In Indian Mythology, Lord Visnu aimed to make the seven planets immortal by extracting a sacred nectar called amrita. However, a dragon-like demon disguised as a deity disguised itself as a deity to become immortal. Visnu, realizing he had been tricked, chopped the demon in half, transforming the dragon’s head into Rahu and its tail into Ketu.
The nodes, Rahu and Ketu, were angry and penanced, giving Visnu planetary status. Rahu represents the dragon’s head, while Ketu represents its tail. These two nodes are powerful forces that control karmic influences and situations through the Rahu Ketu axis.

For those who are looking for how Rahu and Ketu influences humans? Rahu and Ketu are cosmic allegories who substitute planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto(along with Moon) in Sidereal Astrology, as these planets are too far away and remain in one single Zodiac for too long.. The Moon(Chandra) completes its orbit round the Earth in about a month crossing the orbit of Earth twice in the same period, once when it goes from south to north and at another time while travelling from north to south… The ascending point is called “Rahu” and descending point – “Ketu”. These have retrograde motion in the Zodiac at the rate of 19°20′ per year… It has been established beyond doubt by Astrology that Rahu and Ketu influence an individual’s life, at times more than other planets… These nodal points Rahu and Ketu affect our central nervous system as well as sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems which work on the principles of electromagnetic systems. The nodal points are psychosomatic which govern not only the stress level of our mind but also the activities of hormones, blood circulation and function of the heart.
This article is marvelous. This is a wonderful explanation. Easy to understand More logical.. Wishing you all the best to come out from your intellectual thinking process. You are trying to add a ” Astrology is a Science” status . I think the cosmic world have decided to get something out from you to this world. Moon is orbiting the earth in 27.3 days. But it take 29.5 days to change from new moon to the next new moon day. This is due to the movement or orbiting of earth during that time. I understand that. “But the moons orbit itself rotates around the earth once in approximately 18 years so Ragu and kethu also takes 18 years to complete one revolution around the earth.” This is what is recorded in this u tube. But moon is orbiting the kalapurusha chakkara in approx. in one month. Where as ragu and kethu take 18 years to do the same.. Moon, Ragu and Kethu are a combined package revolving the earth. . How can you explain this time difference. Also how can you explain 18 years for ragu dissai and 7 years for Kethu dissai. I will appreciate your explanation.
Great effort to present Vedic Astrology. However you decided to mix modern Western astronomy into it, by showing heliocentric model. Vedic scriptures present geocentric model. Reference is found in the 5th Canto of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Chapter 21: Thus the sun-god travels through the universe for a distance of 95,100,000 yojanas (760,800,000 miles from the Earth) at a speed of 16,004 miles at every moment. At the center of the universe is the Mount Meru with the Earth. The Earth is stationary and the Sun revolves around the Earth at great distance. That is the understanding of ancient vedic astronomers and astrologers. Please consider these points 🙏
If it is scientifically proved to be true,we must feel proud of our ancestors Rishis Munis for their observation and foretellings of solar and lunar eclipses with two shadow points called chhaya grahas 180 degrees opposite to each other,by associating the event with Avery good story of samudramanthan and distribution of nectar and wine by lord Vishnu in a most beautiful lady form called mohini, amongst devas and demans and a deman named Rahu the son of singhika seated in the que of devas between sun and moon gods took nectar by mistake and on pointing out the fact by sun and moon lord had cut his head but due to drinking of nectar he was alive with his head and trunk body and became the cause of solar and lunar eclipses.thanks
Thank you ☀️ My wife is a June Cancer and I’m a July Cancer I’ve known of the Moon being our ruler but never heard of Ketu or Rahu before.. Im trying to understand our differences cuz we have kids and I don’t want to break up.. I was losing a little hope because she is a Fire Tiger and I’m a Metal Monkey which says we are not compatible. It was actually feeling like it.. So I went back at looking at the fact that were both cancers. I wanted to find some hope and insight. Now I have an interesting thing to explore lol . I knew it was something,,, just couldn’t put my finger on it.. Thank you and God bless.. One question tho : Some people were calling these planets with no mass, which was a little confusing. Are they 2 points or planets ? Ty
I doubt if this is a legitimate explanation. When talking about earth, our puranas do not consider planet earth but they talk about ‘Bhumandala’ which is a very large chunk of flat and stationary earth with the 7 nether worlds (Underground regions) or lokas underneath the surface of Bhumandala (Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Rasatala, Talatala, Mahatala and Patala). The Sun, moon and other planets move around mount Meru whose base is located at the center of Bhumandala. And the distance between earth and other planets is described in terms of vertical height above bhumandala.
Actually it takes 18 years for rahu(North node) -ketu(south node) to complete one full rotation in opposite direction. rahu’s nakshtras are Ardra, Swati and Sadhayam Or Shatabisha. And ketu nakshatras are Ashwini, Magha and moola. To all who still are not clear about rahu and ketu, it is nothing but geometric point of solar ecliptic plane where the moon crosses while rotating. That’s why rahu and ketu are told as shadow planets. One important point here is, in your birth chart you can see rahu and ketu. It tells who you are. Your soul growth. Your lagna defines the fate for this life. So pls study your chart and realize where you are in this birth life cycle. To attain moksha, rahu-ketu placement is most important. Rahu shows your desires in this life and your future. Ketu denotes your past life and your knowledge. So pls neutralize it and balance your desires and try to gain more knowledge. Once you attain wisdom, it will automatically guide you to the right path. That’s why ketu is symbol of knowledge. It will suck everything that you have with nothing left and give knowledge. Remember Palani Murugar. Too much of desires and bad character will definitely pull you again for next birth. That’s how the design is done by God in this universe. See thirukural #360. It’s nothing but the same as Soorasamhaaram done by Lord Muruga. All those three Asuras are nothing but your inner demons. Lust, Anger and Maya( illusion). You need to kill your inner demons to attain Moksha. The purpose of Viruchiga and Dhanusu raasi are for that growth of Soul.
I have Rahu in my eighth house (Scorpio ) and Ketu in my 2nd house. Recently, I’ve been exploring the depths my spirituality in an attempt to connect with my Devine spark. Doing this has helped me work through my feelings of powerlessness and feelings of insecurity in my life. I’m also much more sociable and less of a house cat. Thanks for a great article. It was truly enlightening.
Ketu (south node) been there done that, it’s the bottomless pit that you keep doing because it’s comfortable. U = bottomless pit that you just aren’t able to fill. n =work toward ( these U & n is kind of what they look like.) Rahu (north node) is where you should focus, it’s out of the comfort zone. Working on Rahu is the purpose for our ascending successfully to our next incarnate.
Having rahu in 6th in hasta and ketu in Uttara Bhadrapada in 12th conjunct moon and Saturn… I have grown up spiritual but always wanted to conquer my dreams into reality. It’s hard tho because that requires planning and organizing and maintaining your day to day to reach goals. And this has been the hardest part for me. I always surrendered and just “let god” but now I have to focus on reality and the small details of it has always been a struggle.
Dear KAPIEL RAAJ, thank you for giving us your beautiful short film on Ketu! I am going through Ketu antardasha in my life now. I have to admit that I can really see that it is an extremely mysterious planetary phase in my life. Very challenging time for me… Listen, Kapiel, I am you new fan. Love your website so much. I have a question for you. They say, apart from its spiritual mission, Ketu also triggers diseases and different viruses. Astrologers say that the whole planet is going through Ketu??? Jupiter and Ketu? I’m sorry, I’m new to astrology, know very little about it. But I’m very curious! I want to know… trying to understand how planets are affecting our lives, how astrology can predict future and forewarn us about challenges and give us some clue on our karma, spiritual lessons, etc. Could you please make a article about Ketu again? I mean… WHAT DOES CORONAVIRUS HAVE TO DO WITH KETU? WHAT’S ITS CONNECTION TO KETU? THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for your article, I appreciate very much that you share your knowledge with us. You give me so much insight into my chart in this articles I in a few minutes … And I enjoy your language skills and presenting attitudes as well. You speak very clear… It is like a mirror, I can understand myself much better.
I’m having so much trouble with this because I have Rahu in LIBRA (ruler of 7th) in the first house. That put ketu obviously in Aries (ruler of 1st) in my 7th house. I have had a problem where when I AM married I desperately want to be single, and when I’m single I’m miserable and desperately want a partner. It’s more than “the grass is greener” scenario. It feels very karmic, of course. It’s frustrating and I can’t figure it out.
North node 3 degrees from MC in the 9th house in Cancer. Since its the ruling sign of the moon it seems as if the moon in the 5th has played a big part in my life. I was a single parent and raised 2 sons and am now raising 3 grand daughters. Just before having children come into my life I always dreamed of the phoenix and yes my life was transformed by having children. They are the inspiration and spice of life. There are always lessons to learn and no two are alike.
Hi ..I have ketu in 7th house and venus in 4th house, as KRS rightly pointed out in the article, i used to criticise marriage a lot till right from 17 to till about 2-3 months back 😀 . On seeing couples in facebook uploading photos, creating a larger than life image, i have started feeling that maybe marriages are good and now i have realised, like you that i lack relationships and because of certain events in the past, i have started doubting that whether marriage will work out for me !
i have ketu in 7th house and you are correct i just dont give a shit about my life. life is a waste of a time i think. why do we all want everything when u have to leave everything one day. i fight for my girlfriend maybe because of my mars but if i lose her thats it my life will be simple as a pimple
Honorable Rahu & Ketu do they have a relationship with a Darling visible Moon? Otherwise, sounds-scared.Any suggestions- what to do? except let the desires get out! Could it be the Logical solution? Even-though, please, pretend:-we did eject our “CD-Desires”;but pressure of life- still needs our re-actions,-whatever we want, whatever we capable.Maybe, it’s something “deeper”, than our desires&intentions. Thanks a lot. Namaste!
You saying your Rahu/Ketu is 7 houses/150 degrees apart is confusing me. aren’t they 6 houses/180 degrees apart? My North is in Capricorn (10th house) & South is in Cancer (4th house) & I’m having a really hard time understanding the concept of wherever Ketu is – is what you don’t really care about. I understood the South Node differently I guess. With South Node in my 4th house (Cancer), does that mean I wouldn’t care about my roots&home? (Because that’s what 4th house is) Very enlightening & inspirational articles btw; hooping for your response soon! God Bless P.S. I think the reason I was confused with Ketu/Rahu is I’m thinking of Western (Round) birth chart as opposed to Vedic (square) birth chart?
Have a doubt..if ketu is things we don’t care much about if we don’t get in this life then if ketu is in 8th house of occult and mysticism or say all these in depth transformational things, y will ketu make a person good astrologer if he has already conquered that in past life n wouldn’t care abt it?
I have ketu in Leo in 9th house… I keep passing up on being a famous Guru… Been there, done that!! Haha. Rahu in Aquarius in 3rd house… Infamous, constant chatter and communication with all and any networks I can reach about change for the better. I just can’t see how how saggitarius rules 9th house? It should be Pisces or Aquarius. Shouldn’t gemini rule 11th? How the Aquarius, the recluse rule 11th house of social gains, interaction and groups and material gains? Surely Aquarius and saggitarius should switch because Aquarius is more about deeper meaning, and saggi is more about social status… DEFINITELY!
Kindly explain a fundamental stuff here .Talk to me as you say Rahu and Ketu hemisphere or nought of moon – lets say North is Rahu – South is Ketu. Then how in this universe does a full body lies in one home ( like one home contains moon ) another contains its northern hemisphere and the next home contains its south hemisphere. Kindly explain
With your description when i think about the planet aspects that we can have with someone in a Synastry involving Rahu/Ketu, I finally understand some stuff that i actually felt with some people. I thought that Rahu wasn’t only about the past issues… Ok so when you have aspects with someone only With Rahu it’s about something you need to work out?
So I have Ketu in 10th house…so I won’t care about my career but my Rahu is in my 4th house and I am obsessed with houses, and vehicles. How am I going to earn money to get my desires then?? Help! Btw it’s all true. I am obsessed with material things but my career is cursed…having trouble with bosses for the last few years but it’s not really my fault.
Hmm Rahu 8th house leo tropical or 7th house cancer sidereal. I heard it suggested the tropical chart represents your ancestors and sidereal represents you, its interesting to consider. Similar to an idea I had myself whereby I had tropical representing the past and sidereel the future. Past and future collide in the moment
I have Rahu in 11th/ketu in 5th. I like the idea of having children but when I think it thru, it disgusts or terrifies me, but when I think of never having children I feel let down! So it’s definitely an issue, maybe my personal self doesnt want children but society has made that seem wrong. I am obsessive about astrology (11th house?) I’m also obsessive about relationships to a degree. But so far haven’t had one to work out. In navamsa I have Rahu in 1st/ketu in 7th, and I really really want marriage so not sure the navamsa ketu applies. But who knows, maybe by the time I’m 35 I won’t want marriage anymore because I’ll be so frustrated by things not working out (hope not though!) However I was wondering about another article I watched that you made on Rahu in 11 house. You said people with that often achieve a lot of financial gains. So in this article you say you dont achieve it? I mean you work obsessively towards it though? Maybe it depends on if Rahu has aspect of benefic? And mine does, I have Rahu aspect Venus and Jupiter aspect rahu. And in ashtakvarga my 11 house (which is where rahu is placed in Aqu) has the largest # of points of all my houses. So curious about this!
can you help me to knowmore about rahu and ketu my rahu in virgo (1th house ) and ketu (7th house ) some web site said that that rahu in virgo might be good “which will turn out happily if helped by good aspects of Venus and the Moon. Failing this, the position often indicates celibacy.” my moon in capricorn (5th house ) and venus in taurus (9th house ..and ketu in pisces ‘ A general indolence is indicated, which can be modified by a good aspect of Mars. Stability in matters connected with the affections will never exist.” which my mars in gemini (10th house ) ..help please
Im am new to this very detailed astrology. There is so much to learn. I have noticed that the position of the moon looks different then where it normally is. Does this affect those nodes of rahu and ketu? Also does the position of rahu and ketu in any particular house during the time of birth affect those points for a person in the present?
You said Jerry Sandusky probably had something malefic aspecting his Rahu or 5th house. I don’t know his time of birth, and moon is pretty near the last degree of Capricorn if set at 12 pm. But from the moon, BOTH Mars and Saturn are in 5th house Chandra Chart. Saturn’s third aspect glances at Rahu in 7th house Cancer, and Mars 4th aspect hits Jupiter Retrograde in the 8th of his Chandra Chart, Something is going on here, Moon is with Sun and Ketu, 2 more malefics, aspecting Rahu !
My Rahu and Venus (01st) is on Saggitarius while Kethu and Saturn is on the Gemini (07th)and please tell what my marriage life will be.i am separated from my wife cos we were having arguments all the time and i really would love to settle down with a suitable partner and live to geather.will this work ?
If my medical birth tym iz 1130 ( w/ hwich they might’ve rounded UP), do i round dwn 2 11 in order 2 hav my independent Shy Niece pillar in Snake? (I hav snake cohort – 1989) & ( i guess, ovc ) dragon az old self pillar ( hwich iz evolved snake ) Should really go for being such a snake w/ 1100 birth tym lyk sum kind ov Trinity Serpent being >? May 1st b day
You explain nicely and have been perusal your articles from quite a time but what here you are saying for Rahu and ketu for me it’s exactly the opposite like I I’ve Rahu in 2nd house but I am a horribly rigid person on money ethics, while my ketu as you said that you have already conquered the house it represents but for me it’s like according to my Layman knowledge 8th house is in laws which has been too much trouble some for me in life, please explain
my rahu is with moon in simha rasi in 8th house, I am not sure what i am obsessed about… 8 house matters? I have pretty good intuition and psychological insight, also i like to stay in solitude and are able to dive deep into any kind of meditation in good or bad ways. the combination of moon with rahu surely shows in my case that my mother was troubled and died early, further i drowned almost twice. moon with rahu in 8th can be mystical but now that i am in rahu it brings out my darker side.
15° aries rahu & lib with only Asc Libra – mars 24° virgo retro -3rd Sag – 7th Aries -11th Leo (sco debl moon 26° highest degree in chart) why Me !!! Divorced & single 12 yrs! I get it ! my Ra is 8:15deg in Gemini and looks to be situated in btwn 10th and 11th House…I used to be a party-animal (I feel this is my Ketu in Sg, btwn 5th n 6th H), now I have no desire what-so ever and feel like I have become a recluse in comparison. Could you shed some light on my Rahu? I have been perusal your vids all day and have just purchased your book, thank you for your hard work!, thank you for your work!
my ketu is in 1 house and rahu in 7,my sun is of 0.12 deg in 10 house with mercury and I am a leo asc,I went to astrologer he told me that you have the best sun but it is weak.thats why you lack will power and you make late decsions(and I feel this correct)so you must wear ruby…is it required to me? and in your article of ketu in first house you said that ..your asscendent lord must be in strong postions so that ketu and rahu worka nd I am taking fenugreek seeds to make strong my mars and sun
Hi@Krschannel – I have two astrologers telling me different things one says Im taurus ascendant with Jupiter in first house and another says im aries ascendant with a ketu in first house – the place where I was born changed their time cause the king told them to, how do i find my right ascendant sign?
Rahu is in my 5th house and the kid thing doesn’t resonate at all. I also have a kid, had one at 23/24 rather easily. My Rahu is in Aquarius. Also I have Ketu in my 11th and literally what I do for a living is dealing with culture and community work, and its my passion I live for and finally found out who I was here. Im so confused by this description. You say ketu is something you wouldnt care about and Rahu is what your obsessed about but mine seems opposite. I mean I love my kid, planned her, but that wasnt something i was obsessed over having and I didnt want any more kids, just one. im lost on this lol
they get married. & marry again. by then you learn how false a man made legal commitment can be lol. what you worry about robs you of bringing great joy into your present moment. there can’t be any “marriage” without constant joy that blinds you. “Love is blind; marriage restores its site.” — Greek saying
I find this very confusing. So you don’t care about your Ketu/ achievements and it’s impossible to achieve your goal wich is Rahu and as this is your passion in this life it’s actually just like hell like you’re thirsty and you can’t drink to put it very simple I thought Rahu was about evolution of your soul? It now sounds more like hell to me
