What Is Rice University’S Mascot?

In 1917, Rice Institute’s athletic teams adopted a large canvas owl as their mascot after students from Southwest Conference football rival Texas A and M kidnapped it. The owl was later found by a private detective who sent a co-mascot to find the missing owl. When athletic activities began at the Rice Institute in 1912, the teams adopted the owl from the Rice seal as their mascot. In the mid-1990s, Rice decided to use only a student dressed in an owl costume as its mascot. The costumed owl was used alongside a live mascot in the 1970s. Today, the student who wears the owl is the official mascot for the Rice Owls of Rice University.

The event mark was the brainchild of Rice President David Leebron, who has a well-known affinity for the university’s official mascot, the Athenian owl. The primary colors of Rice are blue and gray, selected in 1912 by Rice’s first president, Edgar Odell Lovett. The academic seal, Athenian Owl, and Athletics logos are also closely associated with the Rice brand. The use of additional elements is equally important in the mascot.

Sammy the Owl, a 191-pound, canvas-and-wood object that replaced a live owl as Rice’s mascot, was chosen for the charges because Rice University was dedicated by its founder to the advancement of letters, science, and mathematics.

Rice’s will specified the institution as a competitive institution of the highest grade and that only white students would be permitted to attend.
