I went to Richland. The football helmets used to feature the confederate battle flag, and even the black players wore it with pride. Just about every car in the student parking lot had a confederate flag instead of a license plate on the front. Nobody was thinking of slavery or the politics of the 1860s, but we were all proud to be southern, and to keep some of those positive southern ways going. Now they’ve become the Richland “Royals” and have erased or admonished 60 years of history in NRH.
