What is the mascot of Golden West College?

Rustler Sam, a bowlegged old cowpoke with a branding iron and a ten-gallon hat, has been the official mascot for Golden West College for 36 years. Created by Tom K. Ryan, the cartoonist who drew the popular comic strip “Tumbleweeds”, in 1968, Rustler Sam was inspired by students who admired the character Sagebrush Sam from the Tumbleweeds comic strip. In 1968, Ryan asked students to use his character as their mascot, but instead, he created their own cowpoke. As payment, Ryan requested an extra large sweatshirt with emblem imprint when available, a school pennant, and pictures of the college.

In the mid-1990s, health-conscious students pushed for a redesign that stripped Rustler Sam of his trademark cigarette and removed his smoke. The redesign made the cattle thief look more reputable by eliminating the stubble that adorned his face. The school likes the idea of marketing itself as a beach school, even though the ocean is miles away. The school’s website features numerous beach and ocean shots, including a breaking wave accompanied by the caption “Discover oceans of opportunity!” One student, Opal McClane, scored the idea that the school needed an ocean mascot, but others groaned when told of the idea of a shark representing the school as the “wave rustler”.

Rustler Sam turned 40 in 2006 and was adopted by the campus as the official mascot in 1969. The original Rustler Sam had a beard and a cigarette drooping from his lips. In the 1990s, students concerned about the dangers of smoking sparked a redesign that gave Sam a shave and removed his smoke. He still holds a branding iron, which real rustlers used to change the brands on cattle they had stolen, and a holster on one hip.

Rustler Sam’s trusty horse Bob was created by GWC Graphic Designer Dave Dluzak in 2004.
