Rowan University’s official mascot, Whoo RU, is a brown and gold owl that has been the face of the institution for over 50 years. The mascot’s name comes from the sound owls make, which usually hoot five times: whoo, whoo-whoo-whoo, whoo. The mascot has been a part of Rowan University’s athletics for over 50 years, and it has been a subject of “a lot of myths” over the years.
Dr. Thomas Gallia ’66, M’67, M’70, explains that the mascot was inspired by the university’s original mission to train teachers. The mascot is now the official logo of the university’s intercollegiate athletic programs, and it is for athletics use only. Rowan University also has club teams for archery, ballroom dance, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, cheerleading, crew, and cycling.
The Rowan Owl sculpture, designed by Brian Hanlon, depicts a version of the mascot, the Prof, as it lands on a fragmented tree branch. The 10′ bronze and granite sculpture watches over football. Rowan University’s mascot was ranked one of Yahoo’s picks for the Top 25 Most Unique Mascots in College Football.
