Before the University of Wisconsin-Madison adopted the nickname “Badgers”, they were often referred to as simply “Madison”, the “Wisconsin football eleven”, “Madison team”, the “Wisconsin boys” or “Madison boys”. The university began using the badger as its mascot in 1889 when intercollegiate football began, after the state’s nickname. The university used to keep a live animal before adopting Bucky Badger as its official mascot, representing the spirit of determination and resilience that characterized the university.
The Wisconsin state flag was adopted in 1863, redesigned in 1913, and last updated in 2018. Bucky Badger is not just a mascot for the university; he is a symbol of one of the greatest universities in the world. He can be competitive, serious, or goofy, but always represents Wisconsin through and through. The state of Wisconsin named the badger its official state animal in 1957, and Bucky Badger has always ranked high in fan appeal and enthusiasm.
