The “missing DNC server” conspiracy theory has been widely shared on social media, with President Donald Trump tweeting about it a dozen times since taking office. The idea that a DNC server is hidden in Ukraine, possibly by CrowdStrike’s cofounder Dmitri Alperovitch, is believed to be the evidence of Russia’s innocence. However, the DNC contacted CrowdStrike to respond to a suspected cyber attack impacting its network. The FBI first alerted the DNC to the hack in September 2015.
Trump’s “missing DNC server” comments get all the details wrong, and he stands beside Russian President Vladimir Putin. A whistleblower accusing Trump of pressuring Ukraine’s president to influence the 2020 U.S. election wrote in a complaint that he or she was involved. Trump’s controversial phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in July asked Zelensky for a favor to help locate a “server” linked with security. Trump’s mention of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike likely referred to a debunked DNC server theory.
An elections security company has had to pour cold water on conspiracy theories about the 2016 DNC hack and the 2020 presidential election. Trump mentioned cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike to the Ukrainian president according to a White House transcript. The suggestion that “the server” is being hidden in a Ukrainian warehouse is straight-up bonkers.
