My son is a very good u14 winger. And honestly what makes him very good is his ability to accelerate much more quickly than other kids his age (he’s not the fastest, but within 5 yards he is), and he has very good ball control and touch, and lastly lots of confidence. His coach loves that he’s willing to gamble and try to make something happen in the final third.

I noticed the pre game lineups put both Ronaldo and Messi opposite their strong foot. Weak foot for crossing? Strong foot for breaking center and shooting from a better angle? When I played in high school I got moved to wing after I became a better asset as a scorer than at striker. Also my coach always had me on the side of the opposing bench because I would chit chat, talk trash, etc. Nothing over the top because we were a private Christian school as were many of the schools we played, but by that level, competition intensifies and I always was in check but I was also always pushing the boundaries to see if I could get in their heads so bad they would break. Some games I switched at the half if benches were on the same side. If the benches were opposite sides, I’d play left or right the whole game. But anyway, I liked being on the left as a right footer because I could take it to the corner and pull back toward center for a better angle to shoot. I always saw an advantage on either side. And that is why I led in goals from wing and scored more than our striker.
I need some help from you guys!!! I want to play old-school winger for my team and hug the sideline to make a super wide field of play ( which has been working extremely well recently for us, the team supports, etc. ) yet my coach denies this and wants me to push into the box more often and play less wide. What’s the best option for me to go with? The team, or coach???
My coach all ways says “trey look at me, beat their guy and send it in the box you have teammates.” I always forget and take a shot and while I make a lot of them I often get benched for it so remember even if you think you might make the shot if someone is open with a better shot, give them the ball. I know you may be thinking well I can just shoot and make it from here but sometimes it’s better to just send the ball to someone else with a better shot. Maybe you won’t get benched like me.
