The “Fast and Furious” program, a controversial operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in collaboration with legal gun dealers, involved federal agents tracing weapons of low-level buyers believed to be acquiring them illegally for Mexican drug cartels. During the Fast and Furious investigation, nearly 2,000 firearms were illegally purchased for $1.5 million, according to a DOJ inspector General report. Three high-caliber weapons fired that night in Villas de Salvarcar were linked to a gun tracing operation run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The Brady Campaign contends that the program involved about 2,000 firearms crossing the border into Mexico, about 3% of the guns moving from U.S. gun shops to Mexico. A conspiracy theory that originated in the far-right blogosphere argues that the program was designed to curb gun-running. The Justice Department has given Congress additional documents related to the botched gun-smuggling operation known as “Fast and Furious”.
A Fortune investigation reveals that the ATF never intentionally allowed guns to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. The review found that a majority of the cases ATF referred for were conspiracy cases against higher-level gun traffickers and gun trafficking conspirators. The audit found that weapons seized in relation to Operation Fast and Furious were stored improperly on top of an emergency gun vault.
The right-wing theory of the case in the Fast and Furious scandal is that the Obama administration hoped to generate demand for gun control in the United States. A new report shows that neither the White House nor the DOJ had any knowledge of the Fast and Furious gun walking scandal.
