📹 This tiny home community could be best yet! (North Carolina)
Take a tour of Acony Bell Tiny Home Community – one of the most beautiful Tiny House villages in the country (and maybe the …

Starting a tiny house community has been a goal of mine since I was young, long before the tiny house movement. It just makes sense with the lack of affordable housing everywhere. I have always said if I got a plot of land I would fill it with tiny houses with a sustainable food garden, nature trails, artist studios, brewery, and performance space for musicians and performers. I used to draw floor plans any time I got my hands on graph paper and a pencil. Real in person intentional community is causing so much harm these days. I know it makes me sound like a weird hippie but connection is so essential for a healthy life.
I used to live about 5 mins from this property a couple years ago. They had just started to build up the bones of this community & I’m so happy to see it thriving! That area of WNC is gorgeous–Mills River is still pretty rural even being close to Pisgah Nat’l Forest/BRP/Brevard & Asheville, too. I love seeing places like this TH community nearby, & really thank you Jenna for showcasing this gorgeous spot.
This is fabulous. Unlike almost every other TH community, they have designed the community beautifully allowing for privacy & space. The homes aren’t literally on top of each other in rows. I’ve been researching TH & communities for many years. I love the diversity offered here as well as the outdoor activities; especially gardening which goes hand in hand with the mindset of many interested in tiny homes. Being dog friendly is another bonus! The open areas here are beautiful. I’ve been planning on selling my current properties early next year building a TH & moving into a community. I was hoping to move to the west coast to be closer to family but this looks like I may be moving south instead. Absolutely magnificent job. This should be the model for ALL tiny home communities. Just stunning. Well done Acony Bell!
Acony Bell is a beautiful tiny home community with the emphasis on community. I live not too far from Acony Bell (which is the name of a native flower) and would love to one day live in Acony Bell. Unfortunately, as soon as they open up a new section, it is filled. Tiny homes are very popular in this area and I hope to see more high quality communities like Acony Bell. Thank you for spotlighting this beautiful community.
My wife and I stayed in baby blue for our anniversary. Its the blue one with the cedar shake dormers. Wonderful community full of sweet folks. Hard to not stare into the residents’ homes and I am sure they are sick of it but there are so many details to gaze at for how people solve the tiny home quandaries. My wife and I both loved the black one with the mountainscape on it!
This looks like the best set up I’ve seen so far for a tiny house community. I like how much breathing room there is between the properties and how they allow each of them to express their own creativity with it. I find some of the other tiny house villages/communities are too crammed in together. They remind me of suburban subdivisions which I would think defeats the purpose.
Now . . . we’ve got a winner here with this TH property. I love the open green space and the diversity both in the homes and in the residential make up. It’s very welcoming . . . so much more than some TH communities that feel like you’re living in a Safeway parking lot. I wish more states/counties would tweak their ordinances to allow such communities as this. The space rent may seem a lil high . . . but . . . considering the ambiance and the amenities . . . I think it’s appropriate. I’m curious about the septic system . . . Is it more like a small sewage plant . . . or . . . a X-large septic system?
I stayed in one of the AirBnB units in summer 2020 – it was a wonderful getaway during the sweltering summer in the middle of the pandemic. My dog took off and ended up in one of the residents’ houses since she had her back door open, and she was so welcoming and friendly! The entire community is well kept, and you can tell people take pride in where they live. The area around it is peaceful, but Brevard is a short drive away, and the National Forest is full of hiking trails and waterfalls. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend staying there.! After staying there myself, I really want my own tiny house…but as they said, the state of NC doesn’t think of them as “real” homes. 🙁
OMG!!! This is amazing, and should be THE prototype for tiny home communities all over the COUNTRY. These homes are not on top of each other, aren’t sitting on asphalt or rock, and the setting is simply stunning!!! Cities need to get on board for this type of living spaces, they are so versatile, as the speaker said. All types of people live in tiny homes. Fantastic.
I wouldn’t feel safe in one for many reasons. If I were to “live tiny” I would require being able to move my home in the event of a major storm or disaster.Great for those who cannot afford a regular home. Well done. I especially love the community garden idea. Individual owners should be able to own their own private gardens too of course.
This is a gorgeous tiny home community. A real stand-out! I love how the homes have a lot of space around them. That would make all the difference to me. Some nice amenities and it sounds like they have plans for more. The only thing is I’d want to own my land. Space rent does not appeal to me at all and will go up over time. If I were to go the tiny home route, and it does appeal to me, I’d personally need to own the land it’s on.
Over the years of moving from house to house, military base to base around the world I’ve had the opportunity to live in every different size home imaginable. While in Germany I rented a garden plot house and must say that was the best living quarters I ever lived in, it was small 250 sqft and surrounded by nature. The community captured that idea perfectly ❤️
Fantastic set up. I am currently working for an employer that is getting set for a senior only retirement tiny home community. Building codes and environmental assessments are very stringent but we are getting under way in Spring. We have multiple ponds and creeks flowing through the land. You have a beautiful set up there. Kudos for appealing to the tiny home movement
Been hoping to start something like this myself. Located in a nice bike friendly community. Figure with a few extra solar panels could charge a dozen e-bikes. 60% of the space would be food forest, chicken run, and aquaponics. Means less tiny homes but it does mean the four or five that do will feel nice and secluded even if they are less than 10 meters apart.
They’ve done a sensational job! Australia is so backwards when it comes to tiny houses. There’s a major housing crisis here ATM & the government barely consider tiny homes as worth their consideration. It would be perfect for me – & then the rental I’m in could go to someone who needs more space than I do.
After seeing a few more articles from this community, I came back and watched this again. It’s obvious that something special is going on because some very caring people own this property and have set it up for success by listening to the people who actually live the tiny home life. I’ve immersed myself into tiny home You Tube articles for years now- but continue to live in our 6,000 sq ft home. It’s kind of funny, actually. We do have five grown and almost grown kids, plus grandkids, but if it weren’t for that, I’d be in a tiny home pretty fast! I love your website and look forward to what’s new each week!
I can’t stop sobbing. I’m so moved. I’ve been searching for a place to retire and live a long life TINY. I just NOW felt a stirring in my soul that I found home. I plan to have a Tiny home built next year when I find a community that loves life, loves nature, loves dogs and loves each other. So I have a vacation to plan to visit Agony Bell and sob some MORE. I can’t wait. I hope we will be neighbors. BLESSINGS ✨
I was thinking “Well, what would be really good is if there was regular sewage connection and a shop or something or the community” and you have both regular and water and a community hub. That would make a huge difference to me (though I live in the wrong country to come and stay) 🙂 Also, on a more personal note, thank you for not treating the otters as a pest. I love the little beasties and it’s heartening to see them living alongside you.
fantastic work to everyone involved and thanks for the great article. So good to see a humble and positive expression of the best of the tiny house philosophy and movement. We desperately would love to set up something very similar here in Australia but the local council restrictions do make it tricky. Australia is suffering through a terrible housing crisis and villages like this are exactly the remedy for our ills!
Fantastic looking tiny home community in North Carolina. Well planned out, great looking paved streets and tiny houses and interestng looking trails. If something like this was built in the Pocono Mountains of Pa. I would jump at it in a heart beat. Three guys getting together to create a wonderful space on their own land for others. Keep doing what you do well. People need suporters of the movement like you.
Beautiful location…tiny house living obviously works well ..affordable and community based to make life enjoyable without the Hassel of big bills..Australia need to do this as our housing crisis is at breaking point with many homeless and rentals often even unattainable and overpriced…this is a great system for those who like it from young to old.🏡🌴
Now this is living. I’m 26 & I have a 6 Yr old. The fast life isn’t me anymore. To live somewhere like this seems more intimate. I love that. So peaceful & simple. I want a Doberman, so this would be perfect 😩something like this in FL. But I told my parents I’ll just build a tiny home on their land lol but I love the community side of this. It’s so cute.
Beautifully done in so many ways. Reminds me of trailer parks… SOME are SLUMS…. and some are just gorgeous. Acony Bell THC is an example of how to build an environment which automatically BRIGHTENS and ENCOURAGES its occupants. It might not be in the “gorgeous” category but it’s sure a long way from a slum-in-waiting like so many tiny home communities which remind me of a row of Porta-Potties or outhouses or changing rooms on a British beach.
I love to see these communities popping up throughout the US. Cities need to adapt regulations to incentivize developers to develop more of them closer to big cities. All cities need affordable housing, now more than ever. Kudos to good work guys. We do need to see more women and minorities developing them as well. Thanks for sharing.
$300 per month rent for a tiny house unit at Emerald Village in Eugene, Ore. Those units run a little smaller than the ones shown in this article, but they are permanent in a town where $1K for a decent one bedroom is scarce. There are only about 16 tiny houses in the Emerald/Square One Villages but they are seeking to duplicate themselves as it doesn’t require any government funding.
I actually stayed in one of the Air Bnb tiny homes in 2018 right after they opened. Beautiful place. At the time – this may have changed – you could only stay live there is you bought a tiny home from one of the commercial builders in the area. A friend of mine built a tiny home and she was interested in living there and they wouldn’t even return her calls.
I love your development for tiny homes. I wish all cities would have your outlook on a tiny homes Subdivision. Just because it’s a tiny hound doesn’t mean that you have to fit it on a cracker box lots with no space, these look more like houses. I applaud you for the way you have placed your homes on the lots. I appreciate the fact that you gave pavement to drive on Instead of rocky roads and mud roads. Your homes are set up like a regular homes with the street and it’s just beautiful. I just cannot say enough about the job you have done with this subdivision. I live in Texas and I wish they would do this here in Dallas Texas to make it look more like a neighborhood than just random houses dumped on a piece of land with no thought of how it would look. Anywhere you live you wanted to look nice and feel that you’ve made a good decision, that’s not what it’s offered in Texas they just dump your house anywhere they can. I wish they would make them look more like residential neighborhoods so everyone there can have pride in where they’re home is located .God bless you!
It’s funny, I was just telling my husband, if I had money to invest, I’d like to create a TH community. I described exactly what this one has–including the chickens! My idea came with additional parking hidden away, as well as storage units for those who can’t let go of “stuff.” I wonder how much it cost to buy and develop this land.
Hello 👋 how I love these tiny homes especially in a good community strong big gate love it and the little city you made for these lucky people well iv been homeless for 14 years but since about 4 years now I’ve gotten off the streets in a small little studio it’s ok off the streets but o how I love to own one of them little tiny homes one of my very own home paid off no taxes to pay well I can just keep dreaming about own one by year 2025 hopefully we’ll I like how you showed me around your village community ill keep dreaming about it well my name is Linda love your village of tiny homes great job guys God bless you many more years to keep coming along doing what u doing great job thanks for the information about the little village you guys have made for them peoples who live om your little community village you got there thanks linda
WOW,This is the best Tiny Home Village i have ever seen, others are to close to each other, if they did this in Australia i would buy one in a heartbeat. The Owners seem very nice and Welcoming, Why oh why do councils etc make it so damn hard for people to want to live in a tiny home, I really, really want one. Maybe one day.!!!
I think it is wonderful..I also think looking from above some of the homes are ‘off-set’ not sure why? Thinking if trees were also planted between each home, it would give a lot more privacy..we have these parks and homes here in Australia, but not as much land for each home…. I did enjoy our 13 years in ours. We owned the home, but not the land. So the home could be sold, and really it is a brilliant idea as all over the world buying a normal home is near impossible in most areas.
My parents have 150 sqm (more less 1650 sqft) house that I design 6y ago and cleaning is exhausting. It has 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, dining room, kitchen, living room, storage space in the loft and a balcony at the side to dry our laundry and gardening, parking lots for the scooters and a drop box to receive packages easily. We don’t have any open space for gardening so I made some kind of raised bed above the concrete fence and put some planter bag upstairs. More reason I want a tiny house for my self and build a village like that.
I absolutely love how they work with the owners of the Tinies and thats the reason this place is so successful! Congrats! Some owners are NOT as nice and insist on “running everything!” Well, what’s the point? Go buy yourself a Mobile Home Park……..they call ALL the shots and let the place go to crap, then blame the residents! You guys are doing it right! Nice work! I LOVE how the animals are lived and respected, Otters took our fish, oh well, Otters need to live too, you all can fish anywhere in N.C! LOVE IT!
I love what you did! My biggest question is that zoning is by and large so difficult to create new models for living. I live in California and am baffled how impossible it feels to change the codes from a few privileged to more community minded models. If any of you know of you tube Chanelle or websites that are good resources addressing this question please let me know . Congratulations you all – Imo creating more sustainable models for communal living is essential for the well being of humans. ❤️🥰🥰
I have often day dreamed of a tiny home or at least small home artistic community focusing on music, improv, dance and other arts that require community to thrive. I think an important aspect of such a community would be common buildings and larger structures for other community events. In my vision there would be perhaps a large common building with a larger kitchen for community meals, tables for social dinners and games, a theatre and perhaps some larger open spaces for practicing dance rehearsing theater etc music rooms and so forth.. I feel with my hobby of social dancing having dedicated people to work on it with and practice regularly is the best way to improve and push myself and from my understanding the same goes for improv which I have dabbled in, acting in general and music and part of the vision would be to have like minded dedicated people willing to put the work in to with each other to take their skills in their various pursuits to a higher level. I think a tiny home community might provide an affordable simple living arrangement to allow the members of the community to focus on their passions. It is just a daydream and I know it would take a lot of work if it were to happen both in approving and building it and in finding the right dynamic mix of people to create the dynamic community I invasion. That said when I looked at the price of small trailer park communities that have outbuildings etc I could almost buy a whole park and have money to spare for the price of the modest uptown bungalow me and my wife purchased in Toronto last year so if I were ever to sell and find a few like minded people it may not be so out of reach.
If lot rent is cheap then I’m definitely sold!!! I’ve already been looking at tiny house plans and i know mobile home parts where I’m at are cheaper rent wise than the 4 bedroom house I’m currently renting (you get a lot for your money here though so I know it’s worse in other states and cities) but if I buy a custom tiny house in cash and then just have cheap rent that will help me save to buy my own property then that would be awesome.
In Oregon they used tiny homes for homeless people, if the people looked for a job they had a place to live for 9 months and then moved on. Tiny homes are cute; they are like manufactured homes and do depreciate – something to keep in mind when considering. First time home – would be a cute idea and I did like what Oregon did to help people get off the streets and move on. I would like it as retirement because I like walking and hiking in the woods and the winter snow.
It would be wonderful if Australia was to follow this idea. I live in an ‘over 50’s lifestyle park’ but it has a long way to go to match this place. We are all in rows quite close to each other but virtually no land. (Management seem to want to cram more homes for $$$$). Upon saying that, the residents take pride in their homes, we are a short distance from the beach and facilities. And we are dog friendly. We all need those wonderful companions.
