What is the most expensive rare MTG?

In April 2024, a Limited Editon Alpha of Magic: The Gathering was sold for $3 million in a private sale, setting a record for the highest price paid for any Magic card. The card was pedigreed to the Jeff Ferriera Collection and sold at various auctions, including Heritage Auctions, Heritage Auctions, and Heritage Auctions. The Mox Jewels, a set of five jewel artifacts, add one mana of a certain color type to a player’s mana pool. For example, Mox Jet adds one black mana to the player’s mana pool when tapped, giving players an unfair advantage in play.

The Moxes have been sold at some of the highest prices at auction, as of August 2024. The Moxes are a significant part of the Magic universe and have been a significant part of the Magic community’s history.

How often do Magic: The Gathering sets come out?

How often do Magic: The Gathering sets come out?

Magic: The Gathering, a trading card game, has released numerous sets since its first publication by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. Since then, around 3-4 major sets have been released annually, along with various spin-off products. Magic has created three types of sets: base/core sets, expansion sets, and compilation sets. Expansion sets are the most prevalent type, consisting of new cards with few or no reprints, exploring new settings or advancing the plot in existing ones.

Base sets, later renamed core sets, provide a baseline Magic experience and often consist of reprints. Compilation sets are entirely of reprints and are often made as special themed products or to increase the supply of cards with small printings. Theme decks serve a similar function, but are always attached to a specific set or block.

All expansion sets and base sets from Sixth Edition onward are identified by an expansion symbol printed on the right side of cards. From Exodus onward, the expansion symbols are color-coded to denote rarity: black for common and basic land cards, silver for uncommon cards, and gold for rare cards. Starting with the Shards of Alara set, a red-orange expansion symbol denotes a new rarity: “Mythic Rare”.

For early expansion sets, the rarities of cards were often more complicated than the breakdown into common, uncommon, and rare suggests. Compilation cards are partially arbitrary, with some cards assigned rare status and some assigned mythic rare in a given set.

What are the upcoming MTG sets in 2025?

Wizards of the Coast (MTG) has revealed its 2025 release schedule, which includes Innistrad Remastered in January 2025, Tennis (Deathrace Set) in Q1 2025, Ultimate (Tarkir Set) in Q2 2025, Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy in Q2 2025, volleyball (Space-themed Set) in Q3 2025, wrestling (Lorwyn Set) in Q4 2025, Marvel in QBA, and Arena Improvements in QBA. The release calendar includes return trips to Lorwyn and Tarkir, as well as a Space-themed set. Although exact release dates are not yet known, there is still much to be excited about in 2025.

What is the next MTG release?

The upcoming games include Ravnica Remastered, Murders at Karlov Manor, Universes Beyond MTG Fallout, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Modern Horizons 3, MTG Assassin’s Creed, Bloomburrow, Duskmourn: House of Horror, and Magic: The Gathering Foundations. The final premier set of the year, Duskmourn: House of Horror, is set in a haunted mansion that has taken over an entire world. The game follows desperate survivors in ’80s attire as they struggle to survive in an impossible man-made space filled with ghosts, demons, murderous toys, and mad cultists. The game is expected to steal Innistrad’s title of Worst Vacation Spot in Magic.

What is the rarest Magic: The Gathering set?

The Summer Edition, code-named “Edgar”, was a 1994 set aimed at addressing a Revised card shortage and correcting the incorrect picture and border color of Serindib Efreet. However, after its return, Wizards of the Coast decided to scrap the set due to its dark color and incorrect border on another card, the Blue Hurricane. Around a pallet of Summer Edition was shipped to Texas and overseas card shops.

Why is Black Lotus banned?

Why is Black Lotus banned?

The Power Nine card, known for its power and limited print, is banned from most competitive Magic formats due to its power and scarcity. The only competitive setting where it is not banned is the “Vintage” format, where only one copy is allowed. The card was omitted from Revised Edition and none have been published in any subsequent set. Its power and limited print have made it the most expensive Magic card, with mint condition Alpha cards being among the most valued.

Publisher Wizards of the Coast stated that the card would not be reprinted, which would hurt its value among collectors. The 30th Anniversary set published by Wizards of the Coast in 2023 reprinted 15 cards from the original set, including Black Lotus, which are proxy cards with unique backs and use a modern card frame instead of the classic frame from the original version.

  • My prediction is that there will be a Power Rangers UB product. Hasbro currently owns the Power Rangers IP, Power Rangers and Magic the Gathering are basically the same age (Super Sentai notwithstanding). Older stuff as nostalgia for older players and newer stuff for the younger players. It could easily use the Morph mechanic (which is both flavorful for the IP and is a fun mechanic).

  • I actually think that a monster hunter UB would be somewhat likely, soon even. Capcom let Wotz make the street fighter secret layer about a year before the release of SF6. With MH6 somewhere on the horizon for the next year or two I think there’s a solid chance we’ll get some cool monster on cardboard.

  • A Game of Thrones set could be wicked. Faceless Men could use a ninjitsu-esque mechanic. Targaryens with a mechanic for bonding each one to a dragon. White Walkers as reanimation faction. Return of snow lands and Starks who interact with them. Each of the castles as nonbasic lands. For commander, maybe a dynasty system where you can have any number of commanders from a single dynasty but only one can be in play at once, so you might start the game with Aegon the Conquerer as your commander, then when he dies instead of resummoning him you instead switch to Maegor (you still add command tax) and then later you can switch to Daenerys.

  • A draftable Final Fantasy set honestly sounds like the dream. I know they’ve announced FF, but not sure what kind of product it would be. But FF is one of those IPs that they could easily do a draft set… or three. Maybe I just want fantasy IPs to be the main thing we do with UB. LotR always made sense to me as a set we should get. Should be interesting as Final Fantasy already has TCG.

  • I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet but given that he was a member of the same writing group as Tolkien, I feel like it would be a good idea to include The Chronicles of Narnia, maybe even the sci-fi works of C. S. Lewis. Even if you stay strictly within Narnia, you have Aslan with his God-like powers and prophecy, the variety of humans who can add something from each book and, of course, the Witch and her army, Terrible Word of Power and her magic/temptations. Either way, I feel like it would be appropriate to give players a chance to have Gandalf and Aslan work together against Saron and the Witch.

  • One that I would absolutely LOVE to see is a Cosmere set of some kind. Brandon Sanderson has already written a free Magic the Gathering novella and he’s a huge fan in general (he appeared on Game Knights) but there is SO much that could be done. Each series within the Cosmere could be it’s own set with Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, Warbreaker, and so much more!

  • I could see them doing Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korea. They could do one commander deck for each element and a 5th for the Avatar. They could also use the different colour parings to represent different sub-bending styles. Another option would be to do Power Rangers since Hasbro now owns them, but it would be hard since there are so many teams/seasons to choose from and not everyone will know the different teams (older fans will remember the Saban era teams, late 2000s fans the Disney era teams, and current/younger fans the Neo-Saban and Hasbro era teams). I know they did a card game during Power Rangers Megaforce as a tie in for the card gimmick in the season and the card that came with the toys (for use in the morpher) so they had a use outside the toys and could make cards for legacy teams. But they could still since they did it for Transformers after their tcg got canned (Summer 2018 – Summer 2020) and would be able to include the teams since Megaforce as well along with the other teams. Probably would have to do it like Transformers and do secret lairs (Characters as creatures, weapons and vehicles as artifacts, and zords and megazords as artifact creatures. Could do something special for Ranger power-up forms and teams with multi-combination megazords and different megazords)

  • Great article, Prof! I think Marvel and Star Wars may still be a possibility since Hasbro does have the rights to produce merchandise for both of the properties. One of their most successful merchandise lines are their action figure lines for both Marvel and Star Wars. The bigger issue I’d say is that both Marvel and Star Wars don’t fit thematically with Magic: The Gathering, but I guess anything is possible with Universes Beyond.

  • I feel like The Elder Scrolls has to be up there, right? The setting and lore is enough to encompass several full-scale sets, but the deep lore is pretty niche and obscure. I could see a Morrowind or Skyrim-themed set, but a commander release with whatever the main factions within TESVI will be feels more likely as a marketing move, with secret lairs featuring fan-favorite stuff they miss from the older titles.

  • One word: Malazan. It would be perfect – there are no visual media that have covered it in the past, so the artists would be mostly free to do their thing without everyone becoming obsessive. There are close to 30 books to pull from, and it’s still dark fantasy, so it fits Magic far better than Scifi.

  • Four Batman themed commander decks I think would be cool: Escape from Arkham – All of Batman’s most fearsome foes unite to conquer Gotham City in this BRG Treasure/Madness deck. Bat-Family History – Meet Batman’s friends and allies in this RGW Saga themed trip through the history that bound them all together. Tour the Batcave – Batman is as known for his gadgets and vehicles as he is for his detective skills. Bring every bit of Batgear to battle with this UB artifacts-matter deck. World’s Finest – Batman and Superman team up to solve a mystery and save the day in this WUB face-down matters deck

  • Dc commander decks I see possible. Justice league – legendary/hero tribal Bat family – ninjutsu hero equipment Rogues gallery – villain tribal with lex, joker, or grodd as commander options Mystic defenders – Planeswalker or spellslinger deck. Built around Zatana, fate, or raven Maybe a 5th one built around a super villain as well

  • Personally I wouldn’t mind an Elder Scrolls crossover in the same vein of what they’re doing with LOTR. Plenty of characters, lore, and artifacts to run an entire set. Plus having all the Daedric artifacts as Legendary artifact cards and collecting them all would be a dopamine rush or running Tiber Septim as my Commander

  • I loved Iron Blooded Orphans, Mikazuki is a beast. Anime wise, I could see Cyberpunk having a universes beyond, maybe Ghost on the shell, Vinland saga, Neon Genesis, or even One piece/Naruto/Bleach. There’s an anime or manga that would match like every plain. And DC comics have been killing it narratively, you’d be amazed how crazy it’s gotten.

  • Batman (human 6/4, create a treasure token every turn) would be an awesome equipment/vehicle deck. His ability would have to be he can crew any vehicle by himself using treasure tokens to bring vehicles and equipment back from the graveyard, and he can equip without cost as long as he is equipped with utility belt (utility belt is indestructible if you are equipped with batsuit, batsuit +6/+6) . The best equipment could be kryptonite ring. Kryptonite ring: reach, menace, any creature that blocks attacks from a legendary creature equipped with krotonite ring gets -5/-5 and becomes a coward until kryptonite ring is destroyed.

  • I’d be kind of shocked if anything Bandai got allowed in other games at the moment, especially Gundam. I believe in July, there’s going to be a Gundam add-in/crossover with Battle Spirits Saga, the revamp of one of their oldest games they’re trying to kick off in NA again, and they’re kind of iron-gripped on it. Though, they DO like money, so I’ve seen stranger things.

  • As far fetched as it sounds, I’d love to see a crossover with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. With all the different mutants that exist it would be cool to see what they could do, possibly being able to bring back the mutate mechanic. Plus with the new movie coming out this summer, I don’t see why it couldn’t be either a UB or SLD.

  • Gundam has already a collaboration set on Battle Spirits Saga, a game designed and distributed by Bandai. This TCG is already well developed in Japan and has many collaborations, like Digimon, Evangelion, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider; all big franchises in Japan. I think WotC would have to pick a different universe to appeal to more western audiences. A Thundercats, or TMNT set would be awesome!

  • I think Disney would do be willing to do something as they have worked with Magic the Gathering before (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and recently worked with Weiß Schwarz in Japan but I think it would be done as a marketing tactic for something they can not make into a Lorcana product such as a series or smaller film

  • I think a really cool Marvel Secret Lair would be the Marvel Horror characters – Blade, Dracula, Black Knight, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Morbius, the list goes on. The old school Marvel horror was dark, and a perfect for for MTG, whereas it’s TOO dark for Lorcana. Another Secret Lair I would love to see is The Witcher. I know Gwent already exists in The Witcher 3 and the standalone Gwent game, but they really missed an opportunity by not printing more of the Gwent decks.

  • I agree with Gundam being logical for universes beyond. There are a lot of ways they could take it. They could do something like halvar by having the gundam on one side and it weapon on the other, they could also do like transformers with a vehicle side and creature side by having the gundam as the vehicle and pilot as the creature, and then there are how they do the gundams. Example: The F91 gundam they can give it a +1 -1 as a nod to the metal peel off effect, myriad as a nod to the after images with mass created by the metal peel off effect, and trample as a nod to the piercing power of the F91’s variable speed beam rifles (VSBRs). For Unicorn gundam they could give it an abilty similar to forgestoker dragon’s pay 1R to ping a creature and stop it from blocking as a nod to unicorn disable mobile suits near the end with its power. Then they could give it a buff ability, voltron ability, or level up ability to show its change in weaponry over time. Burning gundam could have myriad as a nod to its ability to make temporary copies of itself, and it could have an ability similar to flameblast dragons pay XR to deal X damage as a nod to the erupting burning finger. Barbatos could be voltron focused or level up as a nod to its changes in weapons and armor as the story progressed. Gundam 00 could have menace as a nod to how hard it is to hit while in trans am or double strike as a nod to it mainly dual wielding, and it could also get a small circumstantial buff during combat. They could also have abilities that trigger upon damaging an opponent like what is seen on swords that are already in the game.

  • This may not be a article about what people would love to see, but regardless I’m gonna tell you what I’d love to see. Austin Powers. A random assortment of anime series (Preferably Bleach and One Piece) And The Vampire Diaries/Originals/Legacies I’m actually making my own Austin Powers Proxy Deck RN. Replacing the artwork and names on as many cards as possible for the most shagadelic experience baby!

  • I think that if Disney would allow, an “Alien Vs Predator” expansion could be fun (most people would say that they would agree, but both individually, but thing is, I don’t think that the number of cards wouldn’t be so high). You would have 3 types of creatures: Humans, Xenomorphs and Predators. You could still maintain the battles/invasion mechanics, and create a new one for the facehuggers, or, it also could easily be an instant like: kill target creature this turn, in the next player’s turn, it will become a token xenomorph. Actually, a Commander Deck with an Alien Queen could be a fun token spawner of “basic xenomorphs”

  • I think that with the new MoU between Hasbro and Mattel, we can expect Masters of the Universe set sooner or later and I think it’s not the worst direction for Universes Beyond line. I don’t mind the general idea behind UB (Magic story is set in the multivese, so it isn’t that illogical to assume that among endless planes there are some that we know from elsewhere), but for the sake of consistency I would prefer the sets that stick to high fantasy genre.

  • Lt. The Professor, I don’t know if the Star Trek “Resurgence” quip was a reference to this, but in case you haven’t heard of it, there’s a new Telltale-style game by that name, and so far it’s actually pretty interesting and evocative of 90s Trek. You might like it! Regardless, thanks for the articles.

  • Something to chew on: my friend went to that new Star Wars Hotel/Space Ship. She did have a great time there and even did some of their side quest adventurers. Well, she found out that all of this “Experience” has been a costly endeavor to Disney, so they are planning to shut it down already. That said, I would never underestimate any business to say no to an opportunity.

  • I know it already exists with Hearthstone, and Blizzard is highly unlikely to grant their IP to a competitor, but I have wanted Warcraft in MtG for 10 years. A set of commander decks, one for the Alliance, one for the Horde, and maybe two others (burning legion with Sargeras as the face / and one for the scourge with the Lich King as the face) would have made my life complete.

  • Im not sure how on the table Star Trek is. Wizkids has been working with them for a decade at this point, and they’re still making products to try and find a successful one. They havent really tapped in to the new stuff, but a season 1 Discovery game is coming out this year, assuming it doesnt get pushed back. I’d really love some Attack Wing with the new stuff, but I think that game’s ship has sailed. Still, Wizkids has been running with the license for a while now including stuff with collectible card elements and theyre known for being really possessive of their elements, with Morphideus being the only other company thats been able to dig in to the license.

  • Hey Prof, you need to get your Bird of Prey and slingshot yourself back in time to about 10 years ago when Anovos had the actual license from Paramount to make uniforms from TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager and the TOS Movies (love that Monster Maroon) up to Star Trek into Darkness. The biggest reason they went under is because their shipping times were horrific. But when you finally got your uniform, wow was it fantastic! I have TOS Engineering, TNG Engineer and Picard’s jacket (what I’ll hopefully be buried in it’s so comfy!) Good luck on your search for a good uniform maker, the Rubies Star Trek TNG uniforms are “serviceable” at best. For combadges look at Quantum Mechanics, you may not be able to find them on their actual store, but there were a lot of comic book distributors that had them and they are by far the best versions of the combadges. Also did you see that short from Roddenberry Archives: Regeneration?

  • FWIW, Gundam has collaborated with the Japanese TCG Battle Spirits and has been confirmed to appear in Battle Spirits Saga, a globally released TCG derived from Battle Spirits. I think it might be kind of cool to see Gundam in MTG, but it also seems somewhat unlikely. Battle Spirits and Battle Spirits Saga are handled by Bandai, the company that also does Gundam’s merchandise. Bandai also runs a few other TCGs, including the TCGs for Digimon, One Piece, and Dragon Ball.

  • The biggest problem with Marvel and DC secret lairs is the rugged longevity of Heroclix. Both properties continue getting sets pushed out, though admittedly somehow Marvel gets something like 3 times the number of set releases as DC. I think the issue is less one of getting the rights from Warner Brothers or Disney, and one of Wizkids just not wanting any competing collectible game stepping on their turf.

  • Its GOTTA be Dune. Theyd be insane not to. Paul Atreides commander precon with the Fremen. A Red White Blue deck based around Scrying. Harkonnen hyper aggressive Red White Black deck. Bene Gesserit Black Blue deck Tleilaxu Black Blue Green deck Leto ii and the Fish Speakers Green Blue White deck I could go on forever

  • I think a very likely candidate would be the witcher or Cyberpunk franchises. CD project announced that Gwent will stop be supported by the end of the year so they no longer compete with mtg and they have a history of licensing the property and crossovers like Gerald being in solcalibur or Netflix series. Also I feel like they fit the mtg adjacent category well.

  • Naruto- Naruto has multikicker that when hes cast makes non legendary clones of himself. Itachi- Tapped activation to tap target creature player controls. Can choose not to untap to keep the other creature tapped. Tapped creature does 1 damage to opponent. Orochimaru- When he dies exile him and create a snake token. When snake token dies return Orochi. You could have like Boros Naruto when hes young. Naya Naruto Sage mode. Things like that where they gain a color for each higher version. Naruto and Sasuke atleast. Since LOTR seems to already go down that route.

  • The one that baffles me is the Final Fantasy set that they’ve already announced is coming to MTG. Final Fantasy already has a thriving tcg (though definitely on the nicher side) that’ll be over twenty sets in by the time the MTG crossover drops. I’m just surprised Square Enix would license it to a direct and more dominant competitor!

  • This suggestion is totally obvious but Skyrim would be an incredible Set/Secret Lair. On the same note the Fallout series. If they Tap into the new Avatar Studios Launch and I promptly would be broke trying to collect every Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, Appa and Momo Card along with you pick a character in any episode and I would have to have it.

  • yes. Warmachine (world and art are already there, flavour fit perfect) set! Secret lairs: KISS, H4ellboy, Mouse Guard, the Buffyverse, Aliens vs Predator, John Carter, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, and Tarzan. Of course The Dark Tower, but i’d almost rather not. more obscure, but perfect: Girl Genius ( Foglio), Rat Queens (!!!), and Space 1889

  • I wish they would just go back into a universe where magic existed as a fantasy card game that created its own lore and meticulously honed it, and made every release tasteful and purposeful. In this they can have a sub pocket universe where it’s like the last 10 years didn’t happen, and they can pick up where they left off before the insane printing and block set changes happened, and we can coast in nerd refinement in perpetuity and ignore all this mega foil hologram imprinted pony Gundam shit the same way we had for Yu-Gi-Oh or Digimon or baseball cards

  • This is definitely a long shot and I’m partially mentioning it just because I really want it to happen, but a SMITE crossover (secret lair?) isn’t impossible. There was recently a crossover where characters in SMITE got MTG skins like Nicol Bolas as Tiamat and Karn as Atlas, so it’d be cool to see the reverse happen in MTG. There are plenty of god creatures that are viable picks if they don’t want to use the same crossover picks they used in SMITE.

  • I’m surprised you didn’t mention Harry Potter. A book series purely based around wizards, witches, spells, monsters, etc. I personally don’t like UB, but Harry Potter feels like the most likely candidate in my eyes. I could totally see them doing anything from a whole set, commander decks, or even something comparable to what they did with transformers in brothers war but in an arcavios set.

  • It would never happen but it would probably beneficial for everyone involved to do a 2-way crossover with other card games. Wizards already did it with Duel Masters and they could try doing it with something like Yu-Gi-Oh or Vanguard. It would basically draw people in who are already into card games to try a new one.

  • I am a bit mixed about universe beyond. One side I like it (lord of the rings especially) and other way its bit weird to have something like superman in a (mostly) high medieval fantasy setting. I think you might missed the option for song of ice and fire set. Yes game of thrones had there own card game a couple of years back, but it’s been dead/unsupported for so long why not doing a big (same as lord of the rings) set. There are enough options, characters, areas and such.

  • Well I’m glad I’ve started taking a break three weeks ago because I hate that this is even becoming a reasonable topic of speculation xD Imma watch the LotR news from afar. At first I thought I’d at least draft the set, but now I think it’s more likely I won’t and will just extend my break until WotC gets a grip (it most likely won’t and I’ll be gone for years but hey)

  • For Anime I think a Studio Ghibli product would be more likely than Gundam, Ghibli has much more awareness in western markets than Gundam so it would make a lot more sense for Hasbro to try and get that instead of Gundam. Also I’d love Star Trek commander decks particularly if there is a Borg deck. You could make the Borg in MTG in several ways, you could have the Drones (a creature type of all Borg Creatures, which would also be artifacts) act like Slivers where each Drone gives all Drones an ability. Or you give them a Borg keyword that does something like “When a creature dealt combat damage by this creature dies this turn, instead Assimilate that creature (Gain control of creature, untap it, it becomes an Artifact and a Drone in addition to its other types, and gains Borg)”. The spells would be pretty easy to theme too, combat tricks could be in the form of “all Drones get ___ until end of turn”, removal can be in the form of assimilation, and ramp/draw by tapping or sacrificing Drones as an additional cost. Obviously the commander would be the Borg Queen, probably as a planeswalker with a + ability to create a drone token and an ultimate that is something like “Create an emblem with ‘At the beginning of your upkeep if you control 5 or more drones, and your opponents control no creatures you win the game, otherwise Assimilate target creature. (Gain control of creature, untap it, it becomes an Artifact and a Drone in addition to its other types, and gains Borg)’ “.

  • I think with the rise of a new jojo’s bizarre adventure part I can see wizards of the coast tackle jojo’s bizarre adventure. It doesn’t have a card game that I am aware of and it would be cool to see the four most popular parts turned into a commander deck ( golden wind, stone ocean, jojolion and the new Jojolands) with the main Jojo at the helms and even maybe have a stand alone set with a little bit of every part in it. It would be awesome to play a naya commander deck with Giorno Giovanna at the helm and a Temur deck with jolyne kujo as the commander

  • None. Though I’d like to see the “region” mechanic appear in magic from the eve online ccg. Essentially they’re legendary lands that you could play into a “neutral” zone, upgrade, and then move ships (creatures) onto during your turn, gaining the resources on it. Detriment being those ships (creatures) no longer protected you or anything else except that region, until moved elsewhere or destroyed by an opponent moving and overpowering your said currently on it.

  • I know it might be hard to pull off card wise but power rangers is a Hasbro-owned IP. give the Legacy actors (the ones who keep coming back for guest spots and team-ups) their own morph cards. and DONT focus on one team, have it spread throughout every generation (but focus one characters who’s actors are still happy with the show)

  • Okay, this is a VERY odd choice for a Universes Beyond, but: Plants vs Zombies. I genuinely think it would make for some very mechanically interesting decks, and there’s definitely a market for it thanks to it being such a nostalgic property for so many adults these days. Picture it: a Green Crazy Dave-led Plant typal deck based around making “Sun” (See: Treasure) tokens and using them to spit out tons of units, facing off against a Black/Blue Zomboss deck based around spawning tons of Zombies and giving them equipment or vehicles to use! It’d be super cool!

  • I recently played against Doctor Who precon and no one at the table had a good time. Nobody knew the cards and their effects, after a while players just lost interest in even trying to figure out what that deck is doing. I think the precon player felt bad about it, because his whole interaction at the table was “What is this doing again?”.

  • I would not be surprised to see a GI Joe set come out since hasbro owns it. Heck, I’d run a Cobra Commander deck. Other than that, and it’s more of a pipe dream I’d want to see, Silent Hill since Konami has been pretty liberal with licensing out the IP (and not because I want to run Pyramid Head as a commander)

  • I think Fullmetal Alchemist would make a great anime universes beyond set, you’ve already got everything you need: commanders (“regular” alchemists) Planeswalkers with ignited sparks (Alchemists who have made human transmutation and seen the gate) mana (alchemy, ) multiple plains (parallel universes in 2003 anime and what lies beyond the gate in 2009 anime/brotherhood) interplanar entities (the eye, Father, homunculi, shadow children, etc.) Special mechanics (transmute, I’m not puting much thought into it but I bet there is something that can be done with this) It would be soooo easy to make a mono red commander deck with Mustang or Kimblee as the commanders, or even allow for the partner mechanic to have Mustang and Hawkeye together

  • I’m not against the concept of crossovers in MtG but giving them entire sets is just So Much. Wished they just stuck with reskinning cards in Secret Lairs and releasing them in non-booster pack products along with canon cards or something. That being said some of these ideas are great. Would love to see some Gundam Vehicles around.

  • I think some Monster Hunter themes ones could be neat. The most iconic parts of MH are the monsters, the equipment, and the cats. So at very least it would be easy to do some skins for big monsters, probably focusing on elders if they are supposed to be legendary, with similar motifs and effects, some skins for the weapons and maybe armor as equipment, and some cooking cat based food tokens. Seems pretty straightforward, especially since Capcoms already worked with MTG. Many of the creatures wouldn’t even be considered that strange in an mtg setting. MTG players can wrap their heads around big fire dragon breathing big fire, and big slow sword do big damage, I assume. And prof doesn’t have to worry about mispronouncing things because everyone already pronounces things in three different ways already (see tigrex). Its a win-win-win.

  • “Disney Buys Hasbro!” That will be the headline several years from now. Lol! Then Prof can have Shuffle Up And Play Commander matches with: Ariel, Curious Collector vs Black Panther, Wakanda’s Hope vs Bartman, Springfield Hero vs Grogu, Luke’s Padawan. I would actually love to see more 80’s cartoon & article games: Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, TMNT, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, & Mega Man.

  • Don’t know who remembers this, but, Marvel and DC had a card game many years ago. It used a play style called “VS System.” I don’t remember who owned the development of the game off hand. I still have my decks, and it’s very enjoyable, in my opinion. Additionally, a new Marvel card game was released that never really got off the ground either called “Legendary.” It was a game you built a deck as you played. Also fun and I still own. Because both of these died out, I think it’s a fair prediction to have Marvel and/or DC included in Magic, especially if it’s licensed to another company that will foot the bill. Yet, if it doesn’t go well, it may be a case of “third strike, you’re out.”

  • personally i think a wwe and mtg crossover would do great numbers though idk how ufc buying wwe would affect it. Wwe is multi generational has been in the mainstream and you have more then plenty of resources for commander or secret layers. The possibilities are almost endless since you could have multiple commander decks of different wrestling generations ex golden era attitude ruthless etc

  • Nice article. I really had to laugh a lot the puns and nostalgic moments you remind me of. Thanks so much for this. I’m still waiting for the announcement of a The Witcher Card Set. Can you imagine Beyblade Cards? The Beyblade Toys are made by Hasbro and all the Blades have there own Creatures, Dragons, Animals, Spirits, Dinosaurs and Elementals inside. Sounds good? Yeah, I think so, too!

  • I’m surprised not to hear the cosmere come up at all. granted, im a big cosmere fan, which is probably influencing my perspective some, but it still feels like a very logical choice. Sanderson is one of the biggest names in fantasy writing at the moment and is very publicly a fan of magic, to the point of having written a short story for wotc and being on game knights. And while this part might not be something you’ve heard, he’s made his own cube of custom cards for one of his series and is working on getting his books adapted to tv or movie. Even planeswalker cards have a perfect thing they could represent, with world hoppers- characters that travel across the worlds in the cosmere. The cosmere seems like a total shoe-in, the kind they could build a whole set around. (Assuming the bridge with sanderson and wotc wasn’t burnt too bad by their handling of the book, which is a distinct possibility since they did break a promise to him.)

  • I think Studio ghibli is a very strong contender for an anime based secret lair. Maybe even a whole drop with one lair for each ghibli movie. Superman is going to be a hard one to make a card for, it would have to be like a progenitus, with keyword soup, direct damage, tapping(freeze breath) and “can only be affected by cards with the kryptonite keyword” or some equally dumb thing. I wouldn’t underestimate Disney’s greed, if they come to see the mtg community as a way to promote or engage an existing customer base for their game or, after their game has failed, or as part of a hasbro pays Disney to be in the Disney game etc etc.

  • As an avid Star Wars fan, I often have SWxMTG thoughts swirling in my head like, “oh what colors would a Maul commander be? Probably Rakdos, and hed have menace (haha) or maybe double strike because of his lightsaber…oh! And I think Anakin would be mardu to portray his internal struggle of light and dark, then Obi-Wan would be Azorious and their stats would be reciprocal to Anakin’s to show how equal they are and—!” And then I realize that it would bother me to no end if any of my commander decks would have MTG, LoTR, SW (and idk probably yugioh crossover cards too at this point) cards mixed in it. Plus it takes away from MtG and its own established universe when it delves into other franchises and never its own, like Lego does almost exclusively these days. Just kinda sucks that this is likely the future lol

  • Not sure if it would be Universes Beyond, or just regular M:TG since Hasbro presumably owns it: Dragonlance. To me it just makes sense to bring Dragonlance into the M:TG fold along with Forbidden Realms / Baldur’s Gate, etc. Dragonlance is quintessential High Fantasy, complete with Gods / Demigods, Dragons, Dwarves, Minotaurs, Knights, Mages, Gnomes, Faeries, Orcs, Draconians, Merfolk, Elves, etc. To me, it just seems logical to bring Dragonlance into the fold. And I could 100% see Raistlin being a Planeswalker, or perhaps even several Creature versions of him from different storylines or points in his timeline. (At various points he was, I believe a white, red, and black-robed wizard (or apprentice).) One could have the various Heroes of the Lance (Caramon, Sturm, Tanis, Tika, Goldmoon, Riverwind, Tasselhoff, Flint, etc.), and some of the various evil dragon highlords (Kitiara, Verminaard, etc.), the various Dragons, Gods, and supporting characters. One could also do a set with the heroes from the first Dragon War (Huma, Kaz, the Minotaur, etc.). And of course all the various lands (magic towers, Qualinost, Silvanost, Icewall, Xak Tsaroth, Thorbardin, etc.) and artifacts (staff of Magius, Goldmoon’s staff, dragon lances, dragon orbs, etc.). Plenty of lore there to plumb…

  • Nintendo are the Disney of article games, if they allow any of their characters onto a magic card, it won’t be one of their IP’s, so Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pokemon are out of the question. It is true that yugioh has its own card game, but if Konami let magic print some of their castlevania characters be printed as magic cards, it would be pretty strong nostalgia. I agree with your logic for everything else- from star trek to DC, to even the witcher, it just follows.

  • DC really does have the most logical characters for MTG. Their B listers and the Magic users in the universe would be great. For example Constantine, Swamp Thing, The Dream, all the characters from the books of Magic including Tim Hunter. (He is the guy everyone accuses J. K. Rowling used to copy Neil Gainmen from) Zatanna, Dr. Fate, Kian and Able, Sampson and Atlas, and many more Magic using characters in the DC universe that would fit in nicely in the magic world. From Marvel I really only want to see the magic using or mystical characters. Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider, and a few others.

  • Power Rangers. It’s owned by Hasbro. Both PR & MTG came out in Aug 1993. You can have the rangers match mana color (except pink & yellow but just make those red/white, blue/green). There’s over 25 teams of rangers so you can make a 1 color set of rangers or use all colors to access a team. There’s an arsenal of weapons, battleizers, and zords to enhance the game.

  • To be honest- I really would love to see classic Trilogies turned into Magic cards. Think Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and Back the the Future. Or if we are going to end up going the full blown anime route- stick to some of the classic there too. Think He-Man/Masters of the Universe, The Thunder cats, TigerSharks, or Captain Planet. While I think the D&D card sets had their struggles- the Secret Lair with Original Animated TV Series D&D Art really was nice! The retro Art really hits home! Know which super heroes aren’t owned by Disney? DC! The good ones! Warner Bros. Has plenty of IPs to share that are fleshed out and ready to go. And they will likely be happy to make a partnership that butts heads with Disney over taking any market share! In terms of Anime, we really need more classics. Think Akira, Studio Ghibli, and Inu Yasha! The themes created in these animes offer way more than just Gundam = Vehicles (or Thopters and Weatherlights- that are rarely played) and Pilots = Pilot Tokens. Cowboy Bebop anyone? Full Metal Alchemist? Bleach? Gurren Lagaan? I would also love to see more direct article game crossovers. I know for a fact if we had a Deep Rock Galactic Dwarves Secret Lair that it would sell out immediately. Love the predictions though Prof. I know it’s a lot lately but hang in there man! They can’t go forever. Eventually Magic will just be Magic again. And I mean that in the best way! 😌
