I am 71, and have read Thor since his Journey into Mystery days in the early 60’s, infact I have read Marvel since every issue of every Marvel Comic with Superheroes came out, not the books I mean the Characters who mostly started out in other titles, often with two different heroes sharing one comic, not a team up, two separate stories, one with each character. I say that because when Thor debuted in his very first story, there was none of this bullshit about “no one being able to lift Thor’s hammer.” The original inscription said ” Whoever holds this hammer if they be worry they shall possess the powers of Thor”. The hammer weighed 40lbs approx. If you could pick it up and were worthy, congrats you are now Thor. The thing is you better grab it fast because for the first 20 years, if Thor was separated from his hammer for more than a minute he turned back into lame ( physically so, not the boring kind of today) physician Dr. Donald Blake, and his hammer turned into his walking stick. If he wanted to become Thor he merely struck his staff. ( Oh Jane Foster was his nurse). I am uncertain exactly when all this “No body can lift Thor’s hammer” stuff happened, but that is not the inscription on the Hammer, unless Odin got some “inscription out” brushed over it and wrote a new one.
For my head canon, the curse of Thor’s hammer affects everything. The reason any non living thing can lift the hammer, it because it doesn’t have a thought that could make it not worthy. Vision on the other hand, even being an android, is impressive, because he has a mind of his own. Take into account that this is my head canon, I’m an 99% sure this isn’t accurate
I wish I knew why people keep getting this myth wrong. Odin’s Spear is the weapon that always hit it’s target and returned to it’s owner. Mjolnir would come when Thor called it. Also, the reason that Thor was the only one that could wield the hammer ISN’T because he was the only one that could pick it up. It’s because the handle was so short that only Thor’s small hands could grasp it.
The more I watch my favorite/one of the most inspiring scenes in The 1st Avenger, where skinny Steve jumps on a grenade… the more I wonder whether it was 100% bravery or more of a desperate attempt by a young man that felt he’d have no other chance to give his life for his country. js… New subscriber

Hela was evil yet not only did she wield Mjolnir, but she also crushed it with her strength. Goodness apparently has no bearing on lifting it. It must be someone who will defend or rule the 9 realms and die in that effort. There is also the possibility that Odin rewrote the instructions on Mjolnir when he banished Hela the first time. Fun fact the hammermonia has no spell and does not have the if they be worthy let them build the power of Thor limitation. In the ultimate marvel continuity which no longer exists anyone who can physically pick up Thor’s hammer can use it. It’s a completely different universe from 616 the main marvel continuity and the movies so anyone can pick up Thor’s hammer in the ultimate universe that one doesn’t count.
actually it is not all that heavy, it is simply magic or quantum science how ever you want to spin it that simply allows the hammer to manipulate physics to prevent those who do not fit Odin’s version of “worthy” from lifting it. those who fit that version like say Beta Ray Bill are able to lift it and then get enchanted with the power of Thor.
