Fruit Stripe Gum, a chewy treat with neon colors and whimsical packaging, is being discontinued by Ferrara Candy. The iconic gum brand, invented in the late 1960s by James Parker, was first sold by the Beech-Nut company. The brand later adopted a zebra mascot named Yipes, and the slogan “Yipes! Stripes!” has been used to promote the gum’s fruit-inspired flavors.
Fruit Stripe Gum came in five flavors: Wet n’ Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange, and Peach Smash. Each pack contained a temporary tattoo of Yipes the Zebra, which became the brand’s sole mascot. The gum and its zebra mascot Yipes were prominently shown on Fruit Stripe gum packaging, with the slogan “Yipes! Stripes!” often used with this character.
The decision to sunset the colorful, fruity gum was based on consumer preferences. The gum and its zebra mascot Yipes are now out of the market, with the slogan “Yipes! Stripes!” being used frequently. The gum and its zebra-themed tattoos will soon head over the rainbow with its multicolored zebra mascot.
Ferrara Candy’s decision to discontinue Fruit Stripe Gum is based on consumer feedback and the need for a new mascot that embodies the gum’s attitude and look. Consumers may still find the gum at select retailers nationwide, but the decision was based on consumer preferences.

When I was 6 year’s old we were shopping at Safeway, I wanted a pack of Fruitstripe gum. Mom said no so I decided to steal it, I got caught the next day, she found it in my dresser. She gave me the money and told me to ride my bike to the store by myself and explain to the manager I stole a pack of gum and needed to pay for it. He was cool.

Please don’t discontinue this gum! It is very much part of my childhood, so much of which isn’t around anymore. article stores, Drive-In Movie Theaters, resturaunts with Rollerskating waitresses, TGIF night, Dine-In Pizza Huts, i was born in 1985 and my Childhood, though turbulent at times was really good, i miss going garage saleing with my grandmother or going to K-Mart when it had the eatery, hanging out at the Mall, now my gum is going, as much as i love Star Trek, I’m not ready for the future…😕
I wouldn’t even be mad if they lied about discontinuing it, in order to get publicity to save the sales. I have found memories of having it frequently in Poolsvile Maryland back in the 90’s. I haven’t had any since because I forgot the name of it, and only remembered it as ‘that zebra gum” because I was so young.
The flavor of this gum was so good but it was gone in seconds and thats not me being dramatic. It also went soft really quick. Like the texture you get if you accidentally fall asleep with gum in your mouth it starts to dissolve lmao gum is not supposed to do all of that in 5 minutes. But i loved it as a kid
