A spellcaster must have a high ability score and be of a high enough class level to cast spells of a given spell level. Racial modifiers are used to generate ability scores, giving a different level of flexibility and randomness to character generation. The ability that governs bonus spells depends on the type of spellcaster your character is: Intelligence for wizards; Wisdom for clerics, druids, and rangers; and Charisma for charisma.
A wizard gains bonus spells based on their Intelligence score. At 1st level, a character has only a small number of 1st-level spell slots per day. As you advance in level, you gain more spell slots and new slots for higher-level spells. Heighten Spell allows you to decide to increase a spell’s level anywhere from +1 to +9.
A caster stat of 18 gives you extra 1, 2, 3, and 4 spells. You don’t get bonus spell slots for a spell level until your class level is high enough to grant you non-bonus spell slots for that spell level. You can’t even use them for lower-level spells.
The spell casting prodigy is a general feat that must be taken at 1st level, boosting your Intelligence, Chr, or Wisdom. The orc race has the favored class bonus: “Add one spell from the witch spell list to the witch’s familiar. This spell must be at least one”.
Spell slots are determined per level of experience and are not more spell slots than other spells. The minimum Intelligence score needed to cast a wizard spell is 10 + the spell’s level.
