I’ll never forget when I first heard this song. It was summer 1991 and I was working my first job at a camp in New Hampshire that employed mainly New York City kids like me. A group of us was walking back from the lake and the guy I had a crush on was blasting this very song on a beatbox ahead of me. I already knew Me Myself and I but something about hearing this carefree, fun jam as we walked through the woods hit me like a blast of pure euphoria. The song ended and the guy switched cassettes and in the process of doing that, dropped the tape. I picked it up and looked at the title and made a mental note to buy it immediately. A few months later, De La Soul Is Dead came out and I was now dating the guy with the boombox from the camp. Together, we went to Tower and bought the brand new disc and that’s when I became a true-blue De La head. They were there with me through my teens, my 20s, 30s and 40s and now I’m introducing them to my 5 year old daughter. De La forever and ever.
Run DMC were the 1st group to get me into hip hop in ‘86 but the Native Tongues cemented that lifelong love with De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest spearheading that movement. RIP Trugoy The Dave, hopefully the new generation will appreciate what you’ve blessed the world with when the back catalogue hits streaming services for the 1st time.
I am so pumped that this is happening! I asked for this album for my 15th birthday back in 1989 and I got it! It was so otherworldly amazing and really helped me with finding what music fit my personality as much as lots of alternative and synth pop bands did at the time. I’ve always bemoaned the absence of this album on streaming services and assumed it was because of sample licensing. I’m so excited for its rebirth and hope that younger people (as well as any people who didn’t hear it at the time) get to experience how mindblowingly inventive and creative this band is. De La Soul, from the soul, love you forever. EDIT (3 days after my original comment) to say Rest In Power to Dove. How heartbreaking…my sympathies to his family, De La, and all of my fellow fans.
I remember being a little kid at the public pool one hot summer in the mid 80’s. I stood up in the 3 ft shallow end & my head was just under the water. I thought to myself “i am 3 ft tall and growing “. I heard this song later on in the early 90s & everytime i hear this along with De La’s message, i think about being that little kid standing up under 3 feet of water
In spring of 1989, I was at Groove Records in London…an american living in England…18 years old…I was already about a year into DeLa Soul (plug tunin etc)….Because I was american, they said they would pay me 200 pounds ($400) for a copy of the record, because nobody could get it. I had the CD with the misprinted order of songs…I think I still have it. I was a HUGE fan of DeLa Soul and Prince Paul. I copied their style for years making music. So glad to see their stuff is finally going to touch the newer generations!
Are these lyrics 100% confirmed by De La Soul, themselves? De La Soul posse consist(s?) of three? Scroll(s?) written daily creates a new sound? Set aside (illegal?) a legal substance to feed ’em? Time is a factor, so it’s time (to?) that count(s?)? Space can be filled if you rise (ride?) like my lumber? …and that’s a (THE?!) magic number? It’s always THE magic number, isn’t it? (Yes, I’m fun at parties.)
Lol 👍😘🕺💯 I was born in the late 70’s SO I WAS AROUND, HERE, THERE & AT THE BIRTH OF HIP HOP & RAP I WAS EVERYWHERE INTO & CURIOUS ABOUT EVERYTHING, JUST ABSORBING KNOWLEDGE & SOAKING IT UP LIKE A SPONGE, LEARNING MORE & MORE & LOVING LIFE IN MY PRIME!!! THIS SONG & SO MANY MORE BRING BACK NOTHING BUT HAPPY TIME’S & WONDERFUL MEMORIES X
This jam brought back brought back three important moments in my human existence. Number one, schoolhouse Rock sampling of three the magic number nostalgic and heartwarming. Number two, de La soul 3 feet high and rising renew my love in childhood and growth in hip hop, number three, the ending credits of Spider-Man no way home brought me back full circle as an adult with all these feelings intact. Love, nostalgia, hope. Three is a magic number.
RIP Trugoy the Dove / Plug 2 – I was just a kid when I bought this cassette all the way back in 89. And btw, I am also 54. So, we share the same birth year. The Magic Number was my favorite song off 3 Feet High and Rising. Loved the other songs but this one was my favorite. RIP Trugoy and RIP Phife. We are losing members of some of the best ever Rap groups. Sad sad news. I can’t even watch the Super Bowl now and I am in Kansas City …. God bless him, his family, any children and his band mates. What a blessing it was to have De La Souls music in my life. Thank you guys, especially Plug 2. RIP
I was wearing my well worn and oversized, bright yellow 3 Feet High And Rising T shirt for band practice yesterday. Day later, I wake up and I find out that Trugoy the Dove has just passed away. Ahhhh shite news!!!! De La Soul are my all time fave Hip Hop band. Their first 2 albums (3 Feet High And Rising and De La Soul Is Dead) are genuine masterpieces. Now that their music is finally available on streaming platforms, I think it will open them up to a new and bigger audience. It’s sad that Trugoy won’t be around to experience it. I’m genuinely gutted 😥
RIP🕊 Dave, Plug 2 we already miss you and are forever grateful for the lyrical genius you were. Thanks for the rhythm’s, rhymes and memories… Hear you soon again & we can’t wait for 2-23-23 release of the lost tapes that completed all the Hip-Hop Heads lives around the world De La Soul Forever🌼 Fly 🕊, Fly on💛
When I was in middle school my Dad said he wanted to throw a hiphop concert and asked me who should he get to perform. I knew he didn’t have much money and this kid mentioned De la earlier in home room, Pot holes was out, I hadn’t seen the article yet I had heard Plug Tunin but didn’t know that was them . I told my Dad to get De la Soul . The show was booked for March 10th 1989 the same week there first album came ou. This was all coincidence. As a matter of fact the month leading up to the show I was scared because nobody knew who they was. I though I messed up. Well, let me tell you, De la packed the house and tore it down. 2000 Black kids at the height of the crack era at the Strand theater in Plainfield Nj went crazy. And when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they said this ne t song is our next single and dropped me myself and I, the place went insane. The next week, I got the album and was blown away. I always felt connected to the Soul.

holy is air, oxygen, I am mostly air, this is a place that is full of air, clean air, amazing air, nourishing, healthy, air of every good healing quality, the healing wind, my meditation like a crystal that creates air, myself like a tree that can move from me come the branches with every plant I sprout, air, bringing me back to earth, to truth, to certainty, but not boredom, prophetic air, air that transformed my life, that restored justice, it came from the spirits of the planet, it liberated me, bad in my ego died away, I keep up this air, by talking about the trees, visualizing them, around me, by not smoking cigarettes, by planting and being environmentally conscious, and by spreading thoughts of love peace and benevolent creativity. I caused this situation to happen, I cause the healing air to grow in the world, because I meditate and can change the qualities of things, as I change myself in psychedelic awareness, I am a kind of nature spirit, many plants as one operating as a tree, my life is devoted to nature, I am a nature person, a tree person, everything I do is for the harmony of the environment, and peace between all beings, I am a jew, often our true message is mistranslated, misrepresented, but this is what its really about. love to all beings, we are all branches of the tree. this is jewish culture, it is love for the planet as a whole which unites all peoples, for the planet is the temple, sacred gift to connect to the divine, if we fight over it, it hurts us but if we work for to help it not to own it, it helps us, when we help the temple which is the planet, which is for all beings without exclusion to have their own divine experience, it gives us what we need
