After World War I, the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering established a new identity as the student body decommissioned from the Student Army Training Corps. The school adopted the nickname “Wolfpack” in 1947 for all athletics teams, and cheerleaders continued to use live wolves, nicknamed “Wolfpack”. The first mascot was possibly Wallace Whitfield Riddick, son of future NC State President.
The Wolfpack is now known for its vibrant red costumes and friendly wolf faces, representing the Wolfpack at games, celebrations, and other important events. The Wolfpack was first mentioned in association with NC State athletics in 1921 when an anonymous letter-writer mentioned it. All NC State athletics teams adopted the nickname, and the pack formed on its own as a nickname. The Livingston Collegiate Academy mascot is a wolf, symbolizing team, loyalty, and spirit. This mascot was adopted in the fall of 2016 when the school adopted the “Wolfpack” as a nickname.
Several schools currently use the “Wolfpack” as a nickname, including Westmoreland County Community College, Wolfpack, Youngwood, Pennsylvania PA, NJCAA, and NJCAA Region 20. The Wolfpack is immediately recognizable around the world for its affiliation with NC State University.
