A jury in Washington, DC, convicted four members of the Oath Keepers of seditious conspiracy and other charges related to the extremist group’s efforts to block the US Capitol. The second batch of guilty verdicts related to the extremist group’s efforts to block the Capitol was found by a jury in the District of Columbia. Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the far-right Oath Keepers militia, was convicted along with one of his subordinates of seditious conspiracy as a result.
The jury also found three members of the Oath Keepers and a fourth person associated with the far-right militia group guilty of seditious conspiracy. Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes has been convicted seditious conspiracy for a violent plot to overturn Biden’s presidential win. Seditious conspiracy is a crime in various jurisdictions of conspiring against the authority or legitimacy of the state and has been considered a form of sedition.
Four members of the far-right extremist group the Proud Boys were found guilty of attempting to derail the transfer of power from President Donald Trump to Joe Biden. Prosecutors sought 10 years or more for Oath Keepers Roberto Minuta, Edward Vallejo, David Moerschel, and Joseph Hackett, but all received guilty verdicts. More than 500 have pleaded guilty to federal charges, while dozens have been convicted at trial in connection to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
