The study aimed to analyze the factors contributing to people’s belief in conspiracy theories, analyzing data from 170 studies involving over 158,000 participants. Conspiracy theories have been a constant occurrence for at least the past 100 years, with African-Americans more likely to believe that the CIA planted crack cocaine in inner-city neighborhoods, while white Americans are more likely to believe that the government is corrupt.
Conspiration theories in the United States politics are beliefs that a major political situation is the result of secretive collusion by powerful people striving to control the world. Recent events, such as the election of Donald Trump, the U.S. Capitol riot, and mass shootings inspired by conspiracy theories, have prompted concern.
Psychological research on conspiracy theories has shown that most Americans believe them, with personality traits and motivations playing a significant role in their persistence. Misinformation spurred the mob that stormed the Capitol, highlighting the disastrous effects of such theories.
The approach to patients with conspiracy beliefs should be similar to dealing with psychotic disorders. Conspiracy theories are everywhere, with the obsession with finding and casting out “un-Americans” being a constant. The earliest conspiracy theory in British history dates back to the 16th century.

I was heavy into AI research in grad school. In one project, I looked at complex application of simple rule sets. One of the things I encountered was that rather dumb complex systems exhibit eerily biological behavior. The more “smart” the system, the closer the biological analogy. I think that one aspect of conspiracy theories is that observers of complex systems (like geopolitics) see what appears to be hidden control of events where there really is only a predictable behavior of an incomprehensibly complex system. Because it’s “obviously” controlled, there must be a hidden controller.
