Six Flags America has announced that Apocalypse, the park’s stand-up roller coaster, will close in September 2018. The all-wooden roller coaster, set in a dystopian sci-fi environment, is set to reopen in May 2017, following a major re-tracking and refurbishment. The ride, which was closed in 2019 due to construction of the nearby West Coast Racers, will be renamed Apocalypse from January 8, and the animated Terminator robots will be removed from the queue.
Apocalypse, an older ride, requires certain upgrades to comply with the latest safety regulations. The park is taking advantage of the closure to implement these upgrades. Nearly all of Apocalypse was retracked by Great Coasters International during its closure in 2019. The ride’s trains have 12 cars seating 2 across, and it is currently closed for annual maintenance.
The closure of “Apocalypse” at Six Flags Over Texas was primarily due to maintenance issues rather than safety concerns. The debranding will remove the animated Terminator robots from the queue. The park has already made efforts to retrack Apocalypse a few years ago, but the constant downtime and large footprint may make it short-lived. The park is taking advantage of the closure to implement these upgrades.

it makes me so happy that sfmm is actually taking care of their coasters(at least more than they used to). Ive heard that viper is getting also a retrack in the next couple years as well, and if so that’ll definitely be the best arrow looper in the country imo. Never understood why people hate on apocalypse, but now its smoother so there shouldn’t be any grounds for complaints
Apocalypse never quite cracked my top 3 of TC, X2 & Tatsu (no spec. order) However, at close it was one of the best reridable coasters. Pretty high on my list for rides to marathon. Night rides on this are really fun too. I never rode with the fire elements, but I imagine that it’s a welcome feeling with the cold breeze.
