Tarot cards can also help make decisions by giving a glimpse into the future. For example, if you can’t decide whether to marry, Tarot cards can help you make a decision.

When should I use tarot?

Tarot readings can be beneficial when making decisions or feeling stuck in confusion. They can help you identify the root cause of your feelings and provide guidance on the next steps. For example, if you have multiple options and no clear winner, you can pull a card to represent each option and reflect on how it makes you feel about the choices. If you’re getting a reading from a professional, you can provide them with specific details for clarity and direction. Tarot readings can also be helpful when you’re stuck in a situation, as they can help you identify the root cause and suggest the next steps.

What was the original purpose of tarot cards?

Tarot cards were initially used for entertainment and diversion, but their use evolved over time. In the 18th century, Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Alliette wrote a book linking tarot cards to divination, assigning meaning to each card based on astronomy, elements, and the Egyptian Book of Thoth. He also assigned a specific order and spread to the cards, now known as Etteilla, which is associated with the origin of tarot card readings for divination. This shift in style and usage of tarot cards has influenced the modern interpretation of divination readings.

Is there any truth to tarot cards?

Early French occultists claimed that tarot cards had esoteric links to ancient Egypt, the Kabbalah, Indic Tantra, or the I Ching. However, scholarly research reveals that tarot cards were invented in Italy in the early 15th century for playing games, and there is no evidence of significant use of them for divination until the late 18th century. The belief in the divinatory meaning of the cards is closely associated with a belief in their occult properties, which was propagated by prominent Protestant Christian clerics and Freemasons.

From its uptake as an instrument of divination in 18th-century France, the tarot went on to be used in hermeneutic, magical, mystical, semiotic, and psychological practices. It was used by Romani people when telling fortunes and as a Jungian psychological apparatus for tapping into “absolute knowledge in the unconscious”, a tool for archetypal analysis, and even a tool for facilitating the Jungian process of individuation.

What is the science behind tarot cards?

Tarot cards have been found to have psychological influences, but they can still have beneficial effects on a person’s mental health when used in a therapeutic context. A 2009 study found that regular users of Tarot cards used them as a tool for self-reflection, providing insight into their current life situations and providing comfort during difficult times. They also used Tarot cards as a tool for positive reinforcement, drawing cards intentionally and randomly to provide insights about their own lives.

Some co-researchers kept a card with them until their goals were resolved, claiming that Tarot does not reveal new information but can provide a new perspective on an issue that can influence a plan for a possible course of action.

This study highlights the potential of Tarot as an effective therapeutic tool, despite the foundational psychological effects behind its mainstream use. Further research on the beneficial impacts of Tarot in a therapeutic setting would involve examining a larger number of participants from a wider variety of backgrounds. Regardless of the reason behind a person’s use of Tarot cards, they have maintained a strong presence in society and have the potential to do more than just predict the future.

Is it good to read your own tarot cards?

Tarot readings can be done by beginners, providing insight into current situations, honoring intuition, and forecasting potential outcomes. To begin, clean the energy of your space by burning herbs, ringing bells or chimes, taking a bath, or using crystals. A Selenite wand is a popular energy refresher that aids clarity.

Sit comfortably and close your eyes, focusing on the protective energy surrounding you. Take deep breaths, think about your question or needing guidance, and keep your mind and heart open to the answers that may come through the cards. Shuffle the deck, focusing on your desired query, and shuffle the cards in front of you. The pattern laid out is called a “spread”, and the meaning of each card in combinations builds up to the overall answer to your query.

Before beginning to shuffle, know which spread you will be working with. As answers come through, it’s important to draw additional cards for further clarity or start with a new question from a different perspective. Tarot readings can be a powerful tool for personal growth and understanding.

  • I struggle with my relationship and trusting my partner. I keep getting 10 of swords and the moon, which shows to me that if I can’t make a decision or stick to a course of action, I’m going to keep struggling and being fearful. It doesn’t mean that I’m going to be doomed if I leave or doomed if I stay. I’m being held prisoner by my own thoughts about the relationship

  • Dear Mr Bellantrae, Your knowledge, wisdom and eloquence is exactly what Ive been seeking for in a teacher. My instinct has always been to remain as traditional as possible. Although Mr Waite emphasized greatly on exploring on your own, and doing what feels right for you, Im afraid he may be rolling in his grave at some of the practices ppl have come up with. 😳. I sincerely appreciate your Guidance and presence here on Youtube 🙏 Thank you.

  • It’s strange. I have always loved the moon and I have a very hard time seeing the moon card as negative because the moon lights up the night most of the time and we can see in the dark. Also, I love the very beginning of the crescent moon coming back after the new moon because it means new beginnings. Don’t wonderful things happen in the night like wolves howling at the moon? That’s what we think they are doing anyway but maybe that’s the way they sing love songs or just release their pain if they have been enduring a sorrow or a loss. How lovely. Don’t we all want to go out in the night with our lover and enjoy the romantic night sky tigether? I really mean this. I am just learning tarot and when I pull this card my tendancy is to see it positively. 🌚🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌚

  • I’m so happy I found your site. I am so new to tarot cards that I am pulling at least one a day to research and write about while also supporting myself in my understanding of the path I am on and so on. Yesterday I pulled the devil card. Honestly, it made me nervous but I pulled a few others to go with it and actually could have just stayed with that one. The devil is my shadow work… my connection to the strength it gives me. I love April fools and it is coming… it is my trickster side and the laughter at myself and those who are aggressive with me. It is the fact that I am again connecting with Kali as a strong mother who laughs at convention… supports those who are hurting and is quite scary but tragedy made me lose that part of myself and bringing it back makes me feel whole again. I see the moon card as the same type of support. Luna… moon… nurturing and cleansing. I have just started learning about crystals and am waiting for the full moon to cleanse them. That is something I’m looking forward to… I am still doing my research to learn the history because I enjoy that sort of thing but reading the cards is reading… that’s a little different than interpreting or being an interpreter. Thank you…

  • I could see the moon for her question, as meaning it’s hidden, meaning it’s not meant for her to know yet, and there’s meaning behind that because the moon is also what lights our path at night, so it also hides certain things for a time because it’s in darkness. That’s the way I would have taken the moon card for that type of question.

  • Hi John, just found your site and hanged around listening to you, articles from 2016, found it very relaxing and yet exiting that many of your thoughts lined up with mine, somehow gave me a felling of connection although we weren’t in the same space enjoying a cup of thee and conversing what I very much appreciate and not only with humans I like conversing and wonder about all I see in our world. I bid you now Farwell John thank you for sharing and all the best. kind regards.

  • KNIGHT OF Pentacles- Knights- Actions (Slow but steady for the Knight of Pentacles) Pentacles- The Physical (Material Objects, Health, Money) Take action in Your physical body. I use SIMPLE Marseille Tarot Meanings, something new to me, though it works! (Yes, I could go more in Depth with meanings. I’m just keeping it Simple for myself.) It really depends on the Question & the Position of the Card in the Celtic Cross Spread(s) or any other spreads. This Will & Does have influence on the Meaning(s) of the Card(s). Also what other Suits or Major Arcana Card(s) are in the Spread. Just my Opinion.

  • Wow. Good stuff. Thank you. I find myself to be guilty of all of the errors you point out here. But of late I have become conscious of error, even while not being able to put my finger on it. The antidote to being bogged down in pre-conceived notions of an issue has been to pull yet another card for clarification. More of a trap? I’ve got to take notes from your wisdom, John.

  • So when we read for ourselves, we should look at the image differently than we would for a querent? Not with an eye towards the “meaning” of the card but as if we didn’t know what the card means and free associate to all the imagery that catches our attention. I like what you are suggesting. Thanks so much. Anne

  • Good afternoon, John. I just found your streaming website. Happy to see you here.Listening, it is interesting that when I first came upon the 3/Hearts, my thought was, ‘cutting to the heart of the matter.’ I think it speaks to how we first see or what we fist see in a card which gives us a direction to work with the spread.
