The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recommends that new drivers have a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving before their road tests, with at least 15 hours at night. To obtain a learner permit, applicants must complete the application form MV-44, bring proof of identity and date of birth to a local DMV office, take vision and written permit tests, and pass at least 14 of the 20 multiple-choice questions. Additionally, at least 10 hours of supervised practice driving should be in moderate to heavy traffic. Most new drivers who fail their road tests are not adequately prepared.

Should I wait outside for my driving instructor?

Ensure you arrive early and avoid rushing to your driving lesson. Some instructors may ring the doorbell or wait in the car for you. You’ll start in the passenger seat and learn the basics in a quiet area. Once on a low-traffic road, switch to the driving seat. Your instructor will explain the cockpit drill, which will introduce you to the checks you’ll need to perform every time you drive. Listen carefully, as you’ll soon be instinctively performing these checks.

Do you actually drive in your first driving lesson?

Upon arrival, your instructor will guide you to their car and teach you the basics. The first lesson will focus on basic driving skills, allowing you to drive for a short time. After completing a few hours, you will be allowed to drive away from your home or workplace to an area of their choosing. The instructor will know the best places to take learner drivers, so they will pick a quiet residential area for the first lesson.

Once you’re behind the wheel, you’ll need to get used to the car, understanding the controls, how to adjust the car to suit your needs, and understanding how everything works. This initial experience is fundamental in helping you learn to drive.

Are there free driving lessons in NYC?

The ACS Driver’s Education program offers free access to a licensed driving school in the Bronx and Brooklyn/Queens for youth and their foster care agencies. The program requires a NYS Learners Permit and a referral form from a case planner. This program is crucial for youth in foster care.

Are driving instructors supposed to pick you up?

Your driving instructor will pick you up from a location of your choice, such as your home, shop, or school or work. If you’re learning to drive in your own car, ensure you have learner plates displayed in the appropriate locations. Most learner drivers learn in a driving instructor’s car, which will already have learner plates and signage. A checklist of items to bring for your driving lesson includes your learner license, logbook, and any other necessary items, such as water.

Should I be nervous for my first driving lesson?

Learning to drive is a gradual process that requires time and practice. Even experienced drivers can improve over time. Your instructor is experienced in handling such situations. How do I learn to drive in NY?

New York requires all new drivers under 18 to complete an approved 5-hour driver education course, also known as a Pre-Licensing Course. This course provides information about New York driving laws and safe driving habits. However, it’s not enough to learn driving without actually driving. A learners permit allows you to learn safely operating a car, with an instructor, either a parent or legal guardian, accompanying you. You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice, 15 of which must be done at night and 10 in moderate to heavy traffic.

You are not eligible to apply for a drivers license until you hold your learners permit for 6 months, allowing time to develop your skills. After completing the NYS driver education course and behind-the-wheel training, you’ll be ready to test for your drivers license.

  • The UK driving theory test is mostly sensible, but has some truly ludicrous questions. One I got wrong on my test was what the different coloured bands mean on a blind person’s cane. Why would I ever need to know that, and why would I be paying attention to the colour of a cane on a pedestrian instead of the road?

  • Automatic high beams should be illegal until they are perfect. They are garbage. They don’t work, and you are blinding the rest of us. And if you drive a Mini, you’re blinding the rest of us anyway. In the UK, at least, the answer to ‘How many seconds should you signal before changing lanes?’ is minus two.

  • Game idea: Doug, Filippo, Kennan, and Nick(if possible) should be quizzed on what country random cars are built in for the US market. For example, the new Ford GT is actually built in Canada. The new NSX by contrast is built in the USA. It brings attention to the fact that certain American cars, for example, are not built in North America. Doug might have an edge, but Nick and Filippo are familiar with normal cars, so it is anyone’s game.

  • I once passed a stopped school bus with flashing lights by leaving the road. I was on my way to high school when I rounded a corner and there was a stopped bus. I pressed my brakes and nothing happened. There was a kid in the street and a stopped car in the lane coming towards me so I went into the grass and around the bus. Given my options I think it was the right thing to do.

  • “what distance should you signal?”- Stupid question. Your signal should be as soon as possible but no earlier than that that would cause confusion as to where you are going. “how many seconds should you singal before changing lanes?” Again stupid question. You check for a gap, creating a gap if needed, then you check its clear, then you singnal and move when its safe. This question just creates the idea that “i’ve signaled for 5secs now I can move”

  • Most of the rules/regulations are ridiculous, but the ones I would most love to see changed/updated is speed limits. Current speed limits are EXTORTIONATELY slow because they were established in an era where cars would struggle to go 60-70mph, had drum brakes all round, etc. Even cars from the 70’s and 80’s at this point can SAFELY go faster than current posted “limits”. There is no reason we should still be going this slow in the modern era. Worse still, many of these liberal-type cyclist-loving governments are LOWERING speed limits further. It’s insane and has to be stopped. They are deliberately giving buses, cyclists and pedestrians more rights to the road than you as a driver, making it increasingly pointless.
