Witchcraft Methods For Cleansing Using Incense?

Cleansing is a crucial aspect of witchcraft, as it purifies energy and creates a sacred atmosphere. It can also be used during meditation to center the mind and deepen focus. Incense is a powerful tool for cleansing your home, as it can shift the energy in your space. By selecting the right type of incense, holding your intention, and reciting affirmations, you can effectively cleanse your space.

Incenses like Sage, Palo Santo, and Frankincense are renowned for their purification abilities and removing negative energy. Myrrh is often used for cleansing. The first step is to hold your hands over the incense, say “with air I cleanse myself”, and allow the smoke to move gently around your hands and fingers. Light both the candle and incense, then pick up the sage and gradually cleanse yourself by moving the smoldering sage around your body.

The tools a witch uses for cleansing are personal and can range from a sage bundle to a moon-water spray. Cleansing incenses purge negativity with smoke, leaving an environment or body spiritually clean. Ingredients are often chosen for their known purgative effects or for incorporating plant companions into your practice.

Incense for witchcraft is made with pure and potent plant essential oils and zero synthetic ingredients. Burning sage is a popular way to remove negative energy, and other methods include egg cleanse, ayomide, resin, herbs, and Patchouli. Overall, cleaning is a vital part of the witchcraft journey and can be achieved through various methods and practices.

What is the ritual of incense?

Incense is a sacred material used in Hinduism, Buddhism, China, Greece, Rome, and the early Christian church. It is used for ritual and domestic offerings, festivals, initiations, and daily rites. In China, it is burned to honor ancestors and household gods, and in Japan, it is incorporated into Shintō rituals. In Greece, it was used as an oblation and protection against demons. In Rome, imported incense became important in public and private sacrifices and the emperor’s cult.

In the early Christian church, incense was used in eucharistic ceremonial, symbolizing the ascent of prayers and saints’ merits. It was more restrained in the West than in the East until the 19th century, when it was widely restored under the Oxford Movement. In both Eastern and Western Catholic Christendom, incense is used during divine worship and processions.

  • Great article, but just a note of caution to the newer witches out there since this is a 101 article: not all crystals should be cleansed in running water. Some can dissolve when placed in water, others can synthesize toxic materials when placed in water for too long. Some crystals to avoid water cleansing are Selenite, Malachite, Lapis Lazuli, Fluorite, Calcite, Desert Rose, Labradorite, or Halite, just off the top of my head. There are others as well so please do your research. Also with cleansing sprays, if you own cats, they are very sensitive to different chemicals and essential oils fall in that category, cats aren’t able to metabolize certain oils and such safely, so take care around your little floof balls and again, do your research! Blessed be everyone. 🖤

  • Little safety tip for those unaware about the sun and stones like quartz! Quartz can concentrate sunlight to such levels as it can start fires, so please be super careful if you are exposing your quartz to sunlight. Do not leave it unattended and if you have a big gorgeous crystal ball, please be sure to cover it when not in use if it’s in an area that gets any sunlight. Safety and mindfulness in practice always loves!

  • Absolutely agree, cleansing is so important (and we could all do more) Friendly reminders: DO NOT CLEANSE SELENITE WITH WATER IT WILL DETERIORATE. Same goes with most ‘ite’ suffix stones. Malachite is toxic when wet so, be extra careful. Be sure to research and know your Crystals inside and out prior to doing anything with them! Great article! Very insightful and lovely!

  • You’re a lovely teacher. Cleansing is so important! If someone’s on their first steps of their path, I’d say start with cleansing. It’ll teach you so much about the energies that you’re setting out to work with, and it’s fairly straightforward. Plus, like Olivia said, it’s the very foundation of witchcraft. I like to call it spiritual hygiene. It’s just something you need to be doing, for your own good. I agree with spray being more concentrated and a bit harder to use – everyone who’s tried to cleanse a whole house with a squirt bottle knows what I’m talking about 😂 I do, however, find it to be a lovely method to cleanse corners that are hard to reach, like up in the ceiling. It’s also such a nice way to cleanse old furniture that you take into your home. I use moon water, a bit of vinegar and whatever herbs/essential oils I need for that purpose. No salt in furniture cleansing spray, as it might damage the material. Oh, and spraying plain moon water on your plants does them really really good. I love using sound too. It’s so effective for waking up that stagnant energy that accumulates in corners, unused rooms, closets… A few claps and then some smoke in places where bad energy’s accumulated, or the soft jingle of a bell in places where the energy just need a gentle wake up and lift. And it’s so logical. I mean, we all know how much music can change the mood of a crowd, or in a room. Happy music will make people feel at ease, and aggressive music may make you feel angry or energised 🤷🏼‍♀️ Sound shifts energy and that’s that.

  • another note about sage: if you are not Native/are obtaining sage from someone who is not, it’s probably best not to use it!! because of the increased demand, sage is not being harvested correctly and it’s becoming harder for Natives to obtain. using sage for weekly or monthly cleansing is not sustainable at all, especially when it’s so important in many Native spiritual practices. unless it’s part of your culture, try using another herb like rosemary 🙂

  • I love how Olivia’s articles always motivate me to focus on my practice, since i tend to neglect it a lot due to Uni and lately the only cleansing that i can motivate my lazy ass to do is by combining visualization and tea (when it comes to myself) which sometimes makes me feel like a joke of a witch😅 (also another cool thing, i love the warm feeling i get because i can tell myself that im part of the wonderlust coven♥️♥️♥️)

  • I thought I would mention this because I just learned it myself and was completely blown away after so many years, is that some fast burning charcoal discs and many incense brands in particular have really bad, toxic ingredients!😵 Like some sticks even have formaldehyde that many have been inhaling on top of the smoke in general. So please, please do your research before purchasing these items!

  • i love you olivia you really are my favorite witch on all the social media platforms and idk the vibe you give i can feel it through the screen i really like the way you do things! you’re really inspiring and relatable 🤣 and yeah i feel like i was meant to cross paths with you for some reason all your articles are the best and biggest help and i really appreciate it sis🖤 also this really suits you! it’s nice to see people found their purpose and really doing their thing in their element i really can’t see you doing anything else! 👏🏼🖤

  • I use sage incense to cleanse and go in after that with sweet grass incense or rose. And I find sound cleansing in the form of clapping really helpful in corners that are hard to reach. I just imagine the soundwaves loosening up the energies so that I can then ‘wipe the energies away’. I always imagine the energies like cobwebs and I use my sage incense sticks like a duster. When I bring back in the positive energies I imagine them coating my home and objects like a balm

  • once upon time I was shrooming with friends at the beach, and this guy was bumping some beats and it felt good. the vibes were good. and then one of my witchy friends started burning incense and at first I was like yaasss and her boyfriend started asking us if we felt a negative energy. he kept saying there was something negative and my intuitive ass thought “it’s you bruh” after that the vibes were off and I had to walk away.

  • Thank you sooo much for these articles you do. I find what you share to be light and uplifting. So I just wanted to also share that in a quick rush to rid myself of some negative energy I will use a bowl of warm water and some salt. I then put my hands in this bowl for at least 2 minutes to 5 minutes. I can feel the energy change happening. When done; and this is important, you want to dump this water in your toilet pit the lid down and flush. This gets the negative energy out of the ho.e quickly and safely. After I feel refreshed and later I can do a better and deeper self cleanse.

  • Hi Olivia! I love this article, mainly because I had to find my own way of cleansing and I had the idea of making a room spray and I was delighted when you mentioned making sprays! I made my own basil, lemon and thyme spray and though it doesn’t smell of much, it feels fresh and clear. It’s also perfect because I can’t use incense or burn anything on my home. I also remember, as a kid, getting rid of headaches by visualising a blue, healing light ‘scanning’ my brain and pushing the red, painful light away, so I guess I could always use visualisation, too! I never even knew about healing using colour or visualisation anyways, I just thought it was my brain being tricked into not hurting 🤣

  • A really good cleansing hack if you have a busy schedule like most of us do. If you can do smoke cleansing and you need to cleanse your house, use your furnace if you have one and let the furnace pull the smoke all through your house. I know it may sound like a lazy way if doing it but it is fast and effective

  • Thank you for reminding me to do the physical cleaning part of cleansing lol. It’s the thing I forget the most when cleansing, that and cleansing myself. I’ve been here for a while now and really haven’t interacted with anyone. Feeling super isolated from everything right now and could really use some connection and co-creation from fellow witches. Wondering if there’s a discord server welcoming in witches?

  • I tend to like visualization for cleansing because I’m still a baby witch and I don’t trust myself with other types but it’s easy to hold my crystals or candles and just work on emotion and will. I think it helps that I’ve had all my rocks and crystals for several years and they know me, so it feels… easier? To work with them. Anyway thank you for reminding me, I have a whole box full of crystals and stones that need some love.

  • Thanks for this, I have a very small jar that I want to cleanse and then make into a necklace, it has some blue dyed salt or some kind of blue crystals in it but I don’t have any incense or tools to manually cleanse them. I think I’ll definitely run some tap water over the jar and leave it out in my window for the night.

  • A question from someone still learning – if I enchant an accessory, but it feels as if it needs cleansing, would I be able to do that without cleansing away the enchantment? Does specifically cleansing away only negative energy allow the enchantment to remain? And what level of cleansing effect would moonwater (my primary cleansing tool) have on such an object? Thanks to everyone who replies to help!

  • I recently learned about the origins of smudging with sage. It wasn’t until 1980 when the indigenous people of North America were legally allowed to practice their religion, including smudging with sage. Both the term smudging and the use of white sage are very important to specific tribes and by making it mainstream, when people have no true concept of the origins, its minimizing and erasing specific religion and beliefs of indigenous people. The word smudging has a specific spiritual meaning to these people, and white sage that’s important to their religion is now being overharvested. Instead of using the word “smudging” people are asked to use “smoke cleaning” and instead of smudging with white sage people are asked to smudge with other plants (like rosemary, cedar or lavender). Just a quick FYI to others. I didn’t know this and wish I had earlier.

  • Try to remember that positive energy is not necessarily “good” energy and negative energy isn’t necessarily “bad”. There are some negative energies we would consider good, and some positive energies that cause harmful effects. Take ions for example. Positive ions are emitted by objects such as computers, televisions, light bulbs, cell phones, air pollution, and even paint (things we’re surrounded by everyday), and can cause harmful effects such as anxiety, depression, breathing difficulty, headaches, and nausea. This positive energy is something you will be welcoming into your life if you only remove all negative energies and welcome all positive energies. You’ll also be removing negative ions which are emitted by waterfalls, the ocean, mountains, trees, basically everything in nature that makes us feel good. You’d be removing energies that make you happy, as well as give you a general sense of well being, relieve stress, and boost energy. Not all negatives energies are unwanted. Instead of removing negative energies, I ask that all incorrect energies be removed and that the area, or object (or myself) be filled with energies that are correct and for my highest good. Just thought I’d share this for anybody who’s been removing “negative” energies from everything and wondering why bad stuff keeps happening to them. It took me a long time to figure this out as well because our culture tells us that positive can only be good and negative can only be bad when the two are actually just opposite ends of a spectrum and carry no moral implications whatsoever.

  • I sometimes use Sage but I don’t love the smell either, I usually use Palo Santo which I personally love the smell of. I have also made a variety of my own New Moon and Full Moon sprays. I am planning to put them up on my shop but I am currently working on the bottle and packaging for them. Lol she just said moon water as I was writing this :p

  • Cleansing with visualization is indeed quite tiring and difficult, and I’d argue I have a decent mind’s eye (helpful for drawing from imagination) but in doing so it definitely take much more effort than simply setting a piece of selenite on top of whatever I’m trying to cleanse. Also I have an experience where I bought some candles for cheap from a buy and sell app and 1 of them was used already, as I was taking them out the moment I touched that used candle I immediately felt a dizzying headache and needed to sit down for a bit. Tried to cleanse it with visualization but it wasn’t very effective, set my selenite up against it for a good hour and by then whatever energy was on that was neutralized enough, still felt weird to hold though… I don’t know what it was used for but I guess it didn’t jive well with me. Might just throw it away tbh.

  • Just cleansed my home office, where I’ve been working for 9 weeks and counting due to coronavirus, with some sandalwood. Smells nice, feels nice 🙂 I’ve also used salt to cleanse crystals I’ve had for years when I used to practice (like, over a decade ago). I made moon water! Lots of little simple steps, which I like. Olivia you’ve brought me back to practice, with your practical approach. Thank you!

  • Enjoyed this article! I enjoy your website so much! I just found you on here a few days ago. I’m so glad I did. I have a question I’m hoping you can help me with! Hi Olivia. My question is about creating an alter. My problem is that I have no real privacy. I’m living in a room under someone else’s roof and feel like I can’t practice my magic the way I’d like. I keep a lot of my witchy things in a big insulated picnic basket (not actually a basket) more like a zip up type carrier. I keep it in my car. Any advice for me on how I can practice my magic in an alter setting in privacy? It’s so important to me and I want to feel free to be able to do my magic in a way that I love and enjoy! Anything you can share would be wonderfully appreciated! 💕💕💕

  • Great article. I know you’ve touched upon protection before, but I’d welcome an in depth article on that. In extremely limited situations, where you only have the most basic materials available, how might you cleanse/protect yourself and your space? For example, could you use salt/soil/water alone, and would that be strong enough?

  • Some is better to cleanse, music from modern technology like cell phones is misleading, fresh water will clean candles, if you wish to enter the dark zone of life bury crystals, if want good energy use full moon only, too cleanse oneself, fast, and afterwards start each morning with green tea, drink water. This article has lots of good information, She is a wise beauty. thank you for sharing. go easy on the candles you will need them soon, it is not three days of darkness coming it is 40.

  • Hello, thanks for the article! I am new into the practice, so I am glad that you showed us many ways of cleansing not only tools but rooms too I plan on having reptiles soon (specifically a snake) so smoke and fumes are generally bad for them since their respiratory system is rather delicate. I still intend to use smoke, but only away from the snake. For her room I will use sound cleansing ^-^

  • I’m brand new to all of this, and I’m not sure how deep I want to get. I do, however want to cleanse my house (it’s a very very old house, built in1850) and I got a sage and lavender smudge stick. My question is how do do this when my husband will think I’ve got more the the usual number of screws loose! He’d think I’ve lost my mind. So if you are in the closet, so to speak, how would you do some of these things?

  • This may be a dumb question, but does incense itself need to be cleansed? In my mind, incense and herb bundles are tools just like any other, and they go through many energies while harvested, made, and sold. Are these energies absorbed and need cleansing, or do they self-cleanse when ignited? If they do need to be cleansed, what is the best way to do this (moonwater, sound, etc.)? Thank you, I am just trying to figure everything out and practice safely 🙂

  • Thank you from Calli and Lilli we accept your offer of invitation. We are going to be involved more with this community because I believe that since this is what we practice this is where we need to be in my life/ours thank you so much brb im so exhausted from today good morning and goodnight im new to this btw 😅 but I’mma overthinking

  • Please be mindful of the use of white sage. It’s considered endangered, and many places that sell it harvest it illegally, and over-harvest it, from native lands and without regard to the cultural significance to the tribes that have cultivated it for thousands of years for religious rituals. Please be considerate of others’ cultures and of the plant itself. Please be sure that the vendors you buy it from gather it responsibly, buy it from native sellers, or grow it in your own gardens. Though, I wonder if other kinds of sage are acceptable.

  • hi small question here. ^^ When cleansing object in a bowl of salt, what do you do with the salt? Do you a)immediately throw it away? b)cleanse it immediately after? c)wait after a couple uses (or one if heavy cleansing) to do either of those options? d) nothing if the salt would be self-cleansing or something?

  • I have a question. So my Parents don’t like it when I burn my incense or sage or anything like that and I feel as if I need that to cleanse my objects for spells and rituals (you know how everyone sages their materials before a spell) but will cleansing sprays (with salt, sage, or other herbs and moon water or rainwater) work just the same? If so do you have any “recipes” or ingredients that would be good to add in?

  • 1. Matthew 4:17 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Turn From Sin And confess to God, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. 2.The Greatest Commandment 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’(c) 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’(d) 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. and this too 3. This is what sins God does not want us doing Revelation 21:8 New International Version (NIV) 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.

  • So I know this article is over a year old, and maybe no one will see this, but I just have a quick question.^ I’m a totally newly hatched baby witch. I bought my very first crystals (in a witch museum non the less!), a raw amethyst and a raw rose quartz. When I got home, I cleansed both of them plus the rest of my new tools with incense. Then the next say I cleanse the crystals with moon water (it was made on a ful moon). It’s been about a week now and when I took out my crystals, I felt like the rose quarts was still clean, but the amethyst needed cleansing. They’ve been lying in a (fake) furred box right next to each other. Is this normal? That one would need cleansing sooner than the other?

  • Omg, i just watched you talk about burning sage and i have to say I LOVE burning sage. It was my understanding that burning sage like incense helped with depression. During covid in 2020, i suffered major losses in my life and was overwhelmed with grief and burned sage like crazy. Much to my husbands dismay bc it kept setting off the smoke alarms. Lol But the “bleaching” effect you talking about could help explain why ive had a hard time feeling positive about all the good stuff in my life. Ive come through the depression but have a hard time getting motivated. Thank you for that tidbit in this article 👍😁

  • Hello I just saw another grate article of yours. QUESTION LOL we are going to be moving soon and we thief a lot so when we move. will just cleansing be enough or do I still have to cleanse each item with smoke like we thrift-a-lot so do I need to cleanse all the items in the new home or would cleansing the house itself be enough. Guess that’s the question.

  • Hello! I’m new to this and I’m in the very deep research stage (i have been for a few months now). I have a semi-important question. I am going to be a closeted witch because I know my parents will make fun of me or highly disapprove. I’m reading up on protection spells which are EXTREMELY important, but I need to know… Do I only put protection on myself and my space I’ll be working in (my room)? Can negative energy/spirits/beings go to my family? Do I have to protect the whole house? If so what are some methods you think will work where my parents won’t see it? If I do need to I’m planning on making four VERY strong protection sigals and barring them in the four corners of my front/back yard. But, do I need to protect the whole house because I honestly don’t think that’s possible- I don’t want my family to get hurt-. Thank you

  • I always enjoy your articles but I’ve heard you say it a few times and I’ve asked around and I get conflicting information about sage being a spiritual bleach. I was wondering where you heard that or if you had any references to that because I am interested myself I would love any additional information. I am fortunate that I have a couple metaphysical stores near where I live and I’ve asked the people at both of them one with an eclectic background one with a back to ground in a native American tradition specifically and they said that’s not something that they heard.

  • I like that term, unwanted energies… I don’t believe in evil or evil energies or entities… so energy can be old or stale or misplaced, or cluttered… I think of spiritual cleansing sort of like defragging a device, or sweeping or decluttering. When you sweep the floor, you don’t think of sand and crumbs as “evil,” yet we know they need to be cleaned up. To me, “evil” is a bit of a scare tactic. So I’m just delighted to see a cleaning article that doesn’t use that terminology.

  • Good basic informational article. One caviot: Sage’s abilities are not known to be that much of a energy cleansing. Depends on what one has learned. I have been using Sage as a strong cleanser for more than 25 years but have not seen it clean all the positive energy. Refresh, yes, remove no. So just FYI for all folks, not everything will work for you as it does for others. I’m sure people will learn that over time. Remember, what works for one does not work for another. I love using Sage as a magickal broom! Lastly, please, PLEASE check your sources of Sage – particularly White Sage was it is endangered in the wild. Check your cultural appropriation too: regular Sage works just as well as white and is easy to grow/dry.

  • I have a question…you see, I keep hearing about “moon water”, but I live in Reno Nevada… And smoke From the wildfires around here is so bad that the moon can’t shine through… You can’t capture the rays of the moon… And y’all say use sunlight but the sun here is so polluted from the smoke or the is blotted out all together… What to do? Or can I use the smoke from the wildfires to my advantage? It IS smoke… Could I just sit by, say, the river, and under the moon, and use the wildfire smoke as a cleansing?

  • I had to come back and thank you for this article! (or maybe it’s another article of yours) 🤔 Anyway, my apartment is a disaster because I feel lost/stressed with the pandemic, etc. 😜 I’ve tried Everything!!! I took your advice…set a timer & cleaned for an hour, 15 minute break, clean for another hour, sat down with a coffee for 15, etc. It’s WORKING!! 🙌✨💞 Thank you so much for this super-effective solution to my cluttered messy apartment! I’m getting back into the craft & have been binge-watching your articles.🖤

  • I super love your website! You make things so easy and are such a wonderful teacher with it. I do however have a question, though. Honestly, I’m hella new and in a research phase of learning, but the the incense in the bowl- how do you do that? Is it with herbs, charcoal and the resign? I’m sorry if that’s like a hella dumb question, hahah.

  • Little safety information, be careful smoke cleansing if you have pets or roommates, ask your roommates if they have any issues with smoke or incense, especially if they have asthma. If you have dogs or cats keep them out of the room until the smoke is totally clear. If you have pocket pets, reptiles, amphibians, or birds then you’re better off never ever burning anything in your home. Especially birds, reptiles or amphibians, they have very delicate lungs.

  • Could you do a article on witches, practice and their origins? Part of me (living on Indigenous land as a descendant of Europe) doesn’t really want to disrespect those who are here (ancestors and the living) by using practices that are not from my ancestors. I feel the most powerful practicing with knowledge from my place of origin and I feel like most people who are considered white have a loss of identity. I feel like colonization has done this to many cultures including ours. I feel like that is what drew me to becoming a witch.

  • Hi there! I really need to do a limpia for my house to get rid off evil spirits. We just bought some plantas and charcoal from the botanica in Tijuana. Should we do limpia every single day? Do I need to seal it off with Palo Santo after that? Do we need to leave the house after that and throw the ashes away from the house? Thank you. Your guidance can really help me.

  • i have a pet bird which means i can’t burn things inside, because parrots are 70% air and smoke and etc is really harmful for them. is there a way to cleanse without smoke/burning/fumes that could be toxic for them around the house? maybe some safe herbs in a pot with boiling water and good safe stuff? what do you think?

  • My home was under fire watch we had to evacuate luckily our home is safe but get to return today to our land amd hope our wildlife friends are still there. This is very helpful. I’m wanting to do a deep cleanse as since we have been in this home it’s like we are getting such tough love testings for energies expecting high expectations from us but it’s really starting to wear us out. Cuz first it started with my mother-in-law who we were living with. She went into foreclosure but was able to do a quick sell and we thought we were fine at least giving me time to get our things and then called us and told us we only had a couple days to get our things so we pushed and ask for help from multiple sources got out of there just totally find out we didn’t have to rush that it was actually the first set time all along and that there was a mistake in the office my mother-in-law got off pretty lucky and was able to at least get enough money off of the house to buy herself a travel trailer and find a place to park it I was able to buy myself some land and a house off grid with money that I had gotten from an inheritance and ever since that’s moving it is just been a really big stress out wreck. 41 we’ve been fighting to figure out the solar power the second thing was getting broken into during the process of moving people constantly cutting our fencing down and tearing down our no trespassing signs and until I made the threat to shoot them they were not stopping but then once I made the threat all over my local Facebook page that if people weren’t trespassed they would end up meeting my 9 mil which I’m surprised I did not get flagged for.

  • I don’t know exactly how to say this but, basically I think I need to find a way to do more than cleanse negative energy. Here’s what happened most recently…. A few days ago, I was visited in a dream by an elderly woman who sat facing me with a man next to her ( I had found myself locked in a hotel room with random people somehow coming and going). In front of the man (I think also elderly?) sat a brown paper bag that she reached into and pulled out what appeared to be a square piece of cake. Telepathically (or so it seemed), she told me to eat the whole thing. I recall taking a bite, after which, she said something, this time verbally, in a foreign language. I think it was 2 words? First of all, I’ve never had someone say anything to me in a foreign language in one of my dreams (at least not that I’m aware of). Very curious. Furthermore, what has me quite concerned is that a while back I recall perusal a YT article where the content provider warned against taking/eating food from an astral being. And it was right after I took a bite that the elderly woman stated something in a foreign language. That’s the last thing I remember. I then either woke up or my dream shifted to another scene so I don’t know if I ate the whole thing or not. Anyone familiar with something like this and know if it’s possibly a spell or curse that I can remove?

  • Wonderful article in many ways. There is a lot to improve and use with your information, thank you a lot. In the part that you talk about the tools and crystals, it’s so true for me too. I have some crystals that I use to help/improve my sleep and when I wake up, and time to time I have to cleanse them because I just not only feel, but I see their “color”/shine changing. It’s like they talking to me: “hey, I am dirty, cleaning time!”. Make my usual cleansing and bam, they are clean and shining again 🤣 and yes, I made the huge mistake to let an amethyst in the sun, accidentally, and my poor baby changed her color. So… people, do not let your baby amethyst lying in the sun 🙁 And I liked when you talked about the selenite, about cleasing them. I learned that them cleanse themselves, but your tip is very helpful. Sometimes I feel mine like the quartz I previous mentioned in my comment. Thank you again.

  • Hello I’m very new to this I have so many questions about witchcraft where to get started ect but my main question for now is this I just got out of an extremely toxic relationship with my children father very mentally abusive and way I heard of cleansing the home but everything I find only shows sage what would you suggest incent wise for me to burn for positive protective energy for myself my children and our home

  • Hiiii so about the music part, would it be best to play the music OUT into the space I’m trying to cleanse or could I listen to music through headphones and still get the same effect? My dad is a huge music snob and everytime I listen to the music I like I’m always afraid that he’ll shame me for liking that particular music. I don’t want to risk playing a song that I find spiritual and that I enjoy and him coming in my room all like “this is shit you should listen to more Def Leopard” So, yeah, headphones would make me feel a lot more comfortable, but if they aren’t as effective as playing music on a speaker, I’m sure I can work around stuff. But… Is it possible that headphones will be okay??

  • My parents don’t know I’m a witch and because of that I have been information deprived… I have some questions. Can you put things in a windowsill instead of outside to cleanse them (such as if you’re making moon water or charging crystals)? I also can’t use anything with scents (like smoke or spray) because of my parents. Are there any other things I can use to cleanse my space?

  • Speaking of bad sticky energies. I’m currently dealing with depression… I’m trying out the craft to bring back who I was or become a new better person altogether. Other than work or necessary trips to the store, I don’t leave my house. I’m introverted but this is different. Life has become a grey vicious cycle. So how can a person with depression use the craft to heal? How do you cleanse something as complex as a person with years of negative energy attached to them? I’ve watched your articles on shadow work, stagnate energy, protection, beginning your journey, etc. I do feel like I’ve gathered enough info from various sources to get started, but would like to see how someone else might/has done on their journey.

  • I had actually started burning some sandalwood before starting this article and it burned so differently to my lavender so idk if it’s the manufacturing (I bought both from the same store though) or if I need to cleanse my room BC when I first lit it part of the stick split off 🤷 and then when it was out a lot of it stayed on(in comparison the lavender had all fallen off) and curled into a circle

  • I physically have to wash my objects down with water or vinager water. I don’t know why. I even wash my 💰 coins, dollar bills. I know thats kinda weird or it was before covid-19 came around. Now people are washing everything. Lol But, i can feel that nasty, grimy, germy, energy on it. Its both physically there & spiritually there.

  • Even though the Salem witch trials are over and done with does not mean that we still do not deal with a certain amount of shit from people. Unfortunately those people happen to be Christian family members who like to Outkast you from the family because you do not believe in what they believe in. How do you deal with that?

  • Hey all, I’m a very new witch and I need a bit of help. So I cleansed my room and my altar with white sage incense, not realizing that it was basically energy bleach, and didn’t have anything to burn after to bring back in positive energies…. What would you guys suggest as the best way to bring back those positive energies?

  • This sounds so silly (I know) but I’ve been recently looking into practicing and I was perusal your tips for beginners a few minutes ago and after one tip you gave I was thinking to myself “Geez I need to start writing down all my intuitions and dreams to keep up with them better” and then your next tip was “Write everything down.” Then, I realized we have the exact same lamp. Again, I know its silly, but I took it as a nice little affirmative sign <3

  • I feel like you are spot on with sensing energies. It is hard to explain, but I can definitely confirm it. ^_^ I’ve always been really sensitive to gemstones. I pick one up and I can just feel if it needs a cleanse, or if it is charged. Once, I put all my gemstones in ziploc bags and set them in the yard under the full moon, and the next day when I brought them in, I had to RUN into the house and set them down because the energy I was feeling was so intense! It wasn’t painful, but it wasn’t exactly pleasant. Lol. Also, I’ve come across a few gemstones that have really strong “personalities”. I have an amethyst that I can only describe as being bubbly and loving. Thanks again for the wonderful article!

  • when i moved into my home that now own, it was filthy i mean funky and you know if they couldn’t keep the house clean their personal life is cluttered all up to and prob. back and forth what i felt in my home, so i use lavender oil, patchouli, mixed with blessed water as a spritzeR with a type of crystal that i need to work with for a specific degree of energy i want it to have and be working toward…I use my own that i make which is palo santo sticks and let soak in water with a piece/one leaf tore into the number 3 of sage and a piece of rose and or smokey and clear quartz just to get that positive scent and feel…I can’t hardly do the smoke not unless i have it outside but i love the sprays they seem to work at a distance better for me….and doesn’t come back as quick you know that funky energy that always wants to creep back in..well that’s what im talkin about…love the vid…great refresher…

  • Wow! You mention cleansing with sound at 06:00 so off I hopped to spotify, found a playlist, then a track called “Awakening Intuition” and loved it. Music is so powerful for me. I have used dancing to dissipate bad feelings and enhance good ones since I was a child. Just lately I’ve grown more conscious about doing this. But to think that I can put my crystals in front of a speaker and cleanse them that way really speaks to me. Thanks for enriching my life!

  • I’m very glad you spoke about this and especially which moon phase you cleanse in. My spirit animal is the wolf and so this coming full wolf moon, which also will coincide with my monthly period, has me excited and nervous like hell. It’s taking an increasing toll on me as the day draws near and yet I feel this weird sense of reassurance that I will be released from something the following day. No idea what that something is but its supposed to feel great. I am not psychic yet I KNOW this. Curious, can you or anyone here shed some light on what is this experience of mine? Perhaps one of you have been through this before. Thank you ever so kindly.

  • I like the visualiastion method for my daily cleansing. I’m more a buddhist witch (if that makes any sense and not solely buddhist) and I’ve worked with it way before I dived in the witchy stuff, so I guess I had a lot of practice before hand. At the end of a Day I meditate for a few minutes and during that meditation I imagine all the people who caused pain or suffering during that day (including myself) and then I let them wash away by sphere of energy.

  • Hi Olivia! Have you ever thought about writing a book on the basics of witchcraft? I know there are already so many out there, but I’ve struggled to find any that I like, and always find myself coming to your articles for information instead! You have such a way with laying out information clearly, and you the amount of research and collaborations with other practitioners is so great to see; it definitely gives me the confidence to know that you are presenting solid, researched information. It has helped me in the start of my journey so much, but I admit, I love studying with a book and notebook and pen! A book by you would be such a joy to read and learn from!

  • So, I’ve been wanting to do some rituals for a while now, but I haven’t really been able to find any instructions or how tos and I really like your articles, I feel like you explain these things very well and make it super easy to understand. Anyway, I was wondering if you could do a article for that? If you can’t, that’s alright, but I thought that it wouldn’t hurt to try.

  • Does anyone ever get an intense feeling from wearing a particular crystal? I bought this spirit quartz a few months ago and it is so gorgeous. However, sometimes when I wear it, it feels intense. I’ve even cleanse it before and spoke my intentions. But, it still feels off? I don’t just want to get rid of it because it looks amazing and I want to continue to use it for manifestation. But maybe it’s just too much? I think when I wore it with my black tourmaline, it was freaking out. But one night, I didn’t wear my tourmaline with it, and it was fine.

  • Hey. I hope this reaches you in time… We are moving into a new home Feb 1 2020 I want to cleanse the space and claim our home… I only want to boot things that have bad energy… If something is there that wants to stay in this home… I was going to sage our home… I see that you suggest using another thing as well So I’m asking I guess, do you have any suggestions on words or something to say to let the bad energy or entity know it’s time to go while still letting any positive vibes or entity they are welcome to stay in this home? I can’t tell if the energy feels bad or just new… So i am looking for something to just set the guidelines for entities to know that this is our home now Thank you

  • for the frist time when coming to my dads house after spending a week at my moms last sunday, I had just started trying to understand all of this witchy stuff just started to try and learn. I felt like the house was sapping out my energy. this article explains why. at my moms we play music, like on a piano not just a radio, we keep the space clean I didn’t realized that that stuff was cleansing, at my dads well it;s a ill maintained mess. that diffently explains the diffrence.

  • ok i have the silliest question, please forgive me. let’s say i choose to use incense to do the cleansing, do i have to cleanse it beforehand or is it self cleansing? and if i do have to cleanse it, what should i use to cleanse the thing i’m using to cleanse something else? (did that make any sense? 😭)

  • About keeping your space clean… YESS Dude my room was so nasty from the pervious people who used it who we had to kick out(thats how i got he biggest room hehe) ive been leaving it for awhile because i wasnt able to paint it but yesterday i finally decided to start painting and scraping the ceiling of the nasty popcorn texture. My closet alone which i finished last night already is so much nicer and i can finally BREATHE in it. The back wall is sage green and the ceiling and walls are pure white instesd of cigarette stained offwhite that just makes you feel gross and dingy. Im going the rest of my room today wall by wall. Ever since i started woring on my energy sensing more i can feel wvery single change in energy and not only do the colors in my room evoke better emotions the walls being clean and the room being clean for once and actually being bright ALLL of the negative energy just WOOSHED out of here. Im also getting new furniture and i just ordered a loft bed to save space and adding fake and real greenery in my room. The energy is so much better just from changing up my space

  • what if your house has been cleansed by a catholic priest and a pagan medium? in my culture, particularly my family, we came from a line of practitioners, mediums and shamans and half of them are practicing christians. should i cleanse it again? also, we have 10 dogs that barks so loud everyday it echoes in the entire household. i hope someone can answer this for me.

  • I utilized a spiritual leader i looked up to on IG. I did a cleaning with her over the phone and after i paid at the beginning. She then said which she didnt prepare me for is to then send her an offering that was just expensive at the end. So now shes basically extorting me for this offering money. From what i know i dont have to give her money as an offering. Is there another way i can make an offering without letting her drain me of money i dont have?

  • I don’t know if someone else has commented on it, but when it comes to cleansing crystals, make sure you do your research first as to whether or not they can be placed under water! Some crystals like selenite will slowly dissolve if they’re subjected to a water cleanse. If that’s the case, I suggest either a smoke cleanse or setting them out under the moon or buried in the earth to cleanse them. C:
