I was born a Hindu and had been a Protestant for about 15 years and converted to the Holy Catholic Church 6 years ago. My eyes actually well up as I think of the unfathomable grace of our Lord bestowed upon me to discover the one true Church and to escape from the mess of mindless stupidities and superstitions. Like any other modern puppet, I was also conditioned to shun traditions and dogmas. But, on my conversion to Catholicism, I found what an enormous intellectual safety and security that one could find under the wings of our Mother!!! By wings, I mean, her Creeds, Traditions, and Definitions. Human reason is a paltry, childish babbling compared to the ageless wisdom found at her feet. While I have been admiring so magnificent a view of the Catholic Church, it came to my notice that many Catholics tries to copy Protestant sentimentalism and emotionalism. It really pains my heart. I feel like a brother having an innocent teenager sister who got attracted to and flirts with a well-known scoundrel in their neighborhood that even his friends try to avoid. Born-Catholics! I went to a Catholic charismatic conference once. The conference center was Filled with thousands of people. During Mass, the priest said, “Now let’s all pray in tongues.” The whole stadium started babbling. Then it stopped and the priest continued the Mass. No interpretation, nothing. What made me very suspicious was that out of those thousands of people “speaking in tongues,” only two stood when asked if anyone was considering a religious life. I was wondering, “If all these people are speaking in tongues, where are the religious vocations? Where are the interpreters? Thus all doesn’t make sense. So I’m Very happy to find this article!!
Fascinating talk. I joined a Charismatic Renewal group. They prayed over me and there was actual pressure put on me to attempt to speak in tongues. I refused, I didn’t feel comfortable with it, I thought it maybe contrived. There were many good people in the group. The head of it was an ex-psychologist. He told our entire family to leave saying we were not committed. I was shocked, we were all shocked. After leaving I was able to look at the group more clearly and saw it more of a controlling cult. I saw some of them at mass after I left and some of them completely ignored me. These are families whom I had cooked dinner for in my house. I’ll never get involved in anything like that again. I now keep it traditional, Mass, Confession and the Holy Rosary. These never make me feel comfortable but bring me peace and happiness. Thanks for posting.
I witnessed as a child my mother attending these charismatic prayer meeting, speaking in tongues, being touched on the forehead and passing out, the whole bit. I used to be a victim of this babble. Honestly, it is cool…. at first, until I encountered Tradition, the True teachings of the Church, and I analyzed that this “cool” thingy will compromise my faith, and it almost did, thank God He alarmed me. I also heard if a person really has the Holy Ghost, he must have the fruits, not the gifts necessarily. And it doesnt really edify the Church at all, it actually opens the door for demons to interfere. I would trust the words of Fr. Ripperger since he is well experienced and he is an exorcist.
In 1968 my mother went to a Pentecostal church and they kept asking her when she was going to speak in tongues. One evening my mother thought she’d put them to the test and started swearing in Italian. The woman sitting (or standing) in front of her turned around and said “Now you got the Holy Spirit!”. That’s when my mother knew they were fake and stopped going to their church.

As a convert from protestantism charasmatic Pentecostal actually where people did this all the time. I just so so so wish all my protestant friends would just come back home too. After seeing things from the view of The Church and giving Catholic theology a chance instead of discounting it I can’t imagine ever wanting to be protestant ever.
The day I became Christian I spoke in tongues. It was a beautiful language and when I spoke it I was accompanied with a profound joy in Christ. It was a language that could only speak the heart of God at its absolute purity. And it took over my entire thinking, my thoughts were in this language. It was very intricate and detailed, not like many people you might hear in protestant Churches. It sounded a lot like a mixture of Hebrew and Russian. Surprisingly, I did not know about tongues at the time, I knew nothing about Christianity other than the fact that I was in desperate need of salvation. The experience was profound and full of light and I have never felt more alive, and it has never happened since. And that very experience was such a deep testimony for me that I pretty much abandoned all of my plans and goals in life and I spent hours and hours praying every single day and seeking God for over a year, until eventually I began seeking him in Church as well.
Several months ago, I tried to practice speaking in “tongues”. Since then I had heard a lot of voices acting as if “God” Himself speaking to me directly, telling me this and that (no evil things at all), making me believe that I was special. Recently, due to some incidents I realized that none of those voices that I had heard turned out to be true. Thus, I blamed God that He had lied to me, and I ended up getting so angry at God. Earlier today, I had a feeling that the voices could be from the devil because God would never say false things. Now I see this article. Probably through the incidents I coped with recently, I learnt a lesson that the voices spoken to my head (a couple times a day)…wasn’t actually God’s. Now I realized the reason that I got those voices was because I had opened the gateway to the demonic realm through speaking in “tongues” (fake tongues to be exact). Be careful guys. I grew up Lutheran, but used to attend an Assemblies of God church on Sunday nights with Pentecostal friends. I really respected these people, but the emphasis on having a peak emotional experience every single service bothered me more & more over time—as well as the downward slide of the preaching from Scriptural “meat” to feel-good “milk.” Ive been Catholic for 23 years now, and have, over time, looked up old friends from both Anabaptist and Pentecostal denominations, discovering to my sorrow that most of them no longer practice their faith—or, for some, even believe in it. Without the Sacraments, they did not have the graces to persevere.
I was in it loved it when there,but found tradition and I loved tradition still went for a while but then I thought no it’s not for me.I have done some research on it and it is very close,to close to kudulini I won’t go back,love tradition,Latin mass,devotions etc,so beautiful felt very robbed as I never found this until I was 50. My mother left Catholicism to join a church where they spoke in “tongues.” I was a kid, and it scared me. It was gibberish to me. Why would God have people yell at me in gibberish? Didn’t he know it would scare me? Even as a kid this thought made me realize it was just in their heads. They do it for attention, I think. Anyway, it’s crazy behavior, and it made me feel surrounded by crazy people.
About speaking in tonguerely s-I grew up Catholic, in Catholic school, etc. When i moved we had an Assembly of God church (in the south) and people would speak in tongues but there was always an interpreter. The pastor went somewhere where he received the “falling out” power. As he was speaking and telling the church, he fell and was out cold for 20 minutes. Right after he fell out, a number of choir people fell, then people in the pews were falling down. the man in front of me in the pew (end of pew) was literally lifted up into the air and thrown down the isle by about 8 feet. I was perusal all this. One man in the military (many Navy men came to that church) strarted shaking so bad and he was yellling Jesus help me..He had to be carried out by 4 men. I could barely stand in the pew. I felt like I was drunk. this church never had anything liket this happen before, it was very conservative. When i went home I told my husband and touched him on the forehead and we both fell backwards in the living room at the same time. I heard a woman laugh as I fell and realized it was me. I didnt purposely laugh at all it was like I was one second unconscious. At the time I thought it was the Holy Spirit. Now I know the HS does not do that. Im concerned I was a victim of the kudlani spirit. I didnt know that existed. Its never happened again. I pray to Jesus/God and my prayers are answered. I see so many evangelists on tv using this “touch” and “fall”. Am I right to say this is not biblical?
Its given in the Bible Mark 16 : 17 that those who believe are given the power to cast out demons and speak in tongues. So, I started asking God to give me the gift of Speaking in Tongues. It was in 2012 I started asking and I got it in 2018. I had to wait 6 years but it was worth it. God not only gave me the gift of Speaking in Tongues but also to sing in tongues 1 Corinthians 14. When I speak in Tongues the peace that I feel is immeasurable. Later on I started asking God for the interpretation of tongues and in 2021 I was given that gift also. No I didn’t go to any Pentecostal church to get it God gave it to me in my bedroom as I was crying out to him for this gift. Since our church doesn’t encourage these gifts so I told no one in my church. I have an important question. I was for some time in a Catholic community (not the Renewal) where they “speak in tongues”, clearly in the the way fr. Chad defined to be “human”. So no demonic. Morevorer, almost all the people I esteem the most as Christians are in that community, for example they pray 2 hours of eucharistic adoration every day and most of them pray the 20 misteries of the rosary every day and they are always very generous and welcoming! So I wanted to know better: is this way of praying good? How can it be bad, since I saw it being practiced by such devout and true Catholic brothers? What does “channeling” mean? I would like to share a little more about my experience: in the community, whilst “speaking in tongues”, missionaries would often say to the ear of the person they’re praying for a thought that came to their hearts, or read them some verses from scripture and give an interpretation. I’ve recieved prayers like this and I’ve experienced they say true and spiritually helpful things. I’ve also tried to pray for others this way. I’ve experienced that when you “speak in tongues” in this human way, it feels like your spirit relaxes a little. I’ve come to the conclusion that this way of praying it’s a way to let out the most hidden intuitions of your spirit. So if your spirit is holy (like in the case of my friends from the community), you will say to the people you’re praying for such helpful and holy things, but if your spirit is not holy you could say useless or even damaging things.
I did have what I thought was the ‘gift of tongues’ that came after a charismatic prayed over me and I was ‘slain in the spirit’. I used it primarily privately in a way I thought was praise. But an exorcist priest told me, when I asked about this, to never do this again unless I knew what I was saying. And I didn’t so I stopped, even privately.
Father Chad Ripperger said: “The worst case of exorcism that I ever had was a woman who asked for the gift of tongues and she got it”. The biggest danger of the Charismatic Movement is not that we will all become Pentecostals, etc. but that we may become fanatical worshippers of ourselves, our feelings and emotions while calling all that self-idolatry “the Holy Spirit”. That open us to websiteing demon spirits and that’s why that woman became possessed. Not all Charismatics will become possessed but too many of the Catholic Clergy, some even at the highest levels, and Laity has become possessed with the self-idolatry of emotions, feelings and “accompanying” and being “inclusive-with-no-repentance-ever” of the sinful world.
In my research into the Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church I read an article on EWTN written by Colin Donovan in which he basically states, that every instance of a charismatic phenomenon has to be individually discerned as to whether it is from the Holy Spirit or not. (Unfortunately, this article is no longer on their website.) That to me is an incredible statement! That seems like an unbelievable burden to put on sinful human beings who are so easily fooled as to spiritual phenomenon. The chance for spiritual deception is too high!

The shift in focus from God as the Holy Trinity, to almost exclusively, at some congregations, to the “Holy Spirit,” was progressively more and more disturbing to see. The calling down of this spirit, the sudden chaos during loud music that would ensue, snd irreverence for Our Lord grew worse and worse. Of course coupled with prosperity gospel and urging people to give,I kid you not, 35% tithe, or more! The amount of people struggling with their assurance of salvation, waiting for the Holy Spirit to come fill them, because speaking in tongues is the sign of someone filled with the Holy Spirit, so you know someones a true Christian if they are, and then never actually doing it, until two church leaders stood by me and prayed and urged and babbled while I made some kind of noise until finally I started babbling I KNOW NOT WHAT AND THATS SOMEHOW GLORIFYING TO GOD?!! The Sacraments are the most concrete assurance of Salvation on Earth, instituted by Our Lord Jesus Christ to make us more and more apart of Himself every time we receive them. They cut straight through the “feelings” that Protestant Pentecostal services depend on. Experiencing the Presence of God in my very Soul, in spite of my bodily chemical reactions, is beyond anything of this world.
I was in the Charismatic Renewal for about 20 years. Some people had the gift of tongues; most did not. Some had the gift of healing; most did not. No one was ever pushed, coerced, or felt pressured to do anything. These gifts are freely given by the Holy Spirit and no matter what you want you can’t make yourself have it.
I grew up in a weird Pentecostal/Non denominational meshed church. Currently converting to Catholicism. So many people would start uttering gibberish with no interpretation. Gyrating about. 4:09 1 Corinthians 14. 14 St Paul said it is possible to pray in the spirit in a tongue but the understanding be unfruitful. So, it does not mean that it is diabolical. I do think much supposed “tongues” is just produced by the person by mimicking sounds, or repeating meaningless syllables. Some may be diabolic. But it is possible some may be genuinely from the Holy Spirit, spoken without understanding, as St Paul says.
I have enjoyed many of Fr. Ripperger talks on article. I do have to say about in the end here, Fr. Ripperger says slaying in Spirit is “psychological” My experience is many times going to Fr. Diorio’s healing service I have been “slain” in the Spirit. It wasn’t something “psychological” I stood before him and he prayed, touched my forehead and I went like an ironing board, fell straight back, felt light as a feather. I didn’t try to brace myself from falling backward, or stumble backward. One cannot fall backward stiff as a board so to speak. One would hold back worried about cracking their skull. It was an authentic “slain in the Spirit” where the Holy Spirit came upon me. Also St. Paul says to pray for the Gifts of Spirit. I have been involved with Charismatic Renewal for many years.
I prayed for the Gift of Wisdom and received it . Yes, you can pray for the gifts of the Spirit, and the Bible says that it is mandatory to do so. According to 1 Corinthians 14:1, you should pursue love and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially the ability to prophesy. However, this text does not mention prayer.
I always felt as though something had happened to me because I did not speak in tongues. As I heard people speaking in tongues, some appeared to me (not knowledgeable on the subject) that they were more like deamons, but I was reassured that this was biblical so I did not question any more. I am still trying to digest the article, and will watch it again because so many priests (renewal priests) have spoken about this as a gift of the Lord. uhmmm speechless still but at the same time relieved.
I have allowed myself to be Prayed over by maybe 6 different ” Preachers”, Priests, and ” Prayer Warriors”, many others were falling ” in The Spirit” but not me. Thank You Lord. I have been Protected. I had been involved in the Carismatic movement, and had progressed in my Spiritual life, in particular, through a Beautiful Priest, who’s Heart is sincerely in Jesus, but I have been led to more Contemplitive worship in general. I have seen many errors in Charismatic movement, mostly through Protestantism. Also, with what Fr. R is saying about Grace/ Gifts from God: like ‘ tongues’, I think it is man made, for self edification, although many Hearts are trying to be sincere.
May I share my experience? I was confirmed when I was eight years old. When preparing for the sacrament, I had great faith about receiving the Holy Spirit. A few months later, I found myself speaking something I called “jibber jabber ” when alone; I felt so happy. Then I thought that my older sister would tease me endlessly if she heard this, so I would not allow myself to do that. 22 years later, I made Cursillo, and a friend invited me to a charismatic prayer group. There I prayed for a new baptism in the Spirit, and started speaking. It was the same things I spoke at age eight! Through our participation in the charismatic renewal, I, and my husband, learned how to discern when the Holy Spirit is speaking to us. He is a Deacon, and I have observed things in the spiritual realm that came out true. And I agree with Father, much of the things in the “renewal” are people seeking the unusual, not seeking holiness. I realize now, from Father’s talk, that I was given a gratitude gift. I can tell so many stories about this. Thank you, Jesus.

Chad how do we help ourselves or those others we know who have invested their spirituality into the charismatic movement, (many people have done this for *decades*) and what are some of the best ways to bring them back to the Church.
I fasted the whole day, prayed my rosary, and decided to pray quietly. All of a sudden I realized that I couldn’t pray in my usual way. I started speaking in tongues all of a sudden. In fact I couldn’t stop it the first time I spoke it. In fact I don’t understand what I’m saying but I noticed that the words change based on what I’m thinking about. I’ve been asking God to take it away if it’s not from him. Paul mentioned that he prays in tongues more than everyone else. I’m not sure if he understood what he was saying or not. Only God knows I guess.
This is an interesting position on the gift of tongues – but how does Father Ripperger reconcile this perspective with 1 Corinthians 14:13-19? “Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray to be able to interpret. (For) if I pray in a tongue, my spirit* is at prayer but my mind is unproductive. So what is to be done? I will pray with the spirit, but I will also pray with the mind. I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will also sing praise with the mind. Otherwise, if you pronounce a blessing (with) the spirit, how shall one who holds the place of the uninstructed say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? For you may be giving thanks very well, but the other is not built up. I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you, but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.”
I am a priest and exorcist. On this subject, this priest is saying things that, unfortunately, he does not know fully. He has a misconception of the gift of tongues. This gift has been graciously given to me by God and I make use of it all the time in my ministry and I can tell you all that it has helped me a lot.=== I Just want to add to what I posted: I respect this brother in the priesthood, who has a lot of knowledge in this and other matters, I just point out his misconception in the case of the gift of tongues
Regarding speaking in tongues, I believe that the tongues in Acts and that spoken of by St Paul in 1 Corinthians 14 are the same thing. They’re both real, human languages, not spontaneous outbursts of unintelligble sounds. There’s no reason I’ve seen so far to say otherwise. Something that helped me see this is to replace “tongues” with “languages” in 1 Corinthians 14. And you can also replace “in Church” with “when you’re with others” to help see the point. 1. How then do we make sense of 1 Cor 14:2?: Establish context first To begin with, the context of 1 Cor 14 is love: how we should make love our aim (See vs 1) You’ll see this if you read chapters 12 to 14 (which is talking precisely about spiritual gifts and I encourage everyone to read those three chapters), where it was established that love is the highest spiritual gift. What then is Love? – Simply, it is seeking the good of others. Or doing things that will benefit others. – You’ll notice that in chapter 14, Paul said many things about tongues. He said that he speaks in tongues more than others, but then added, “in Church (i.e. when you’re with other persons), do so and so”. – Basically, St. Paul is saying, in your private prayer, you can edify yourself. But in Church (i.e. when you’re with others), do things that will edify (benefit) others. 2. Returning to 1 Cor. 14:2 – 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. – Why does no one understand him?
All the times that I had prayed in tongues were all preceded with my usual catholic prayers and songs of praise and worship. I believe that what often happens is that when my thoughts and words can’t truly express my adoration and reverence to God during praises andprayers, the Holy Spirit Himself uses my vocal chords to produce words that I don’t know nor even remember afterwards. I never plan any of those experiences. Sometimes, I wish it would just stop so that others won’t look at me but it would only end when He wishes at words that’d sound like “Amen ” From my experience, the language is strange and the joy that follows after proves that it is the Holy Spirit. Praise the Lord.
I received the Gift during adoration for about 10 seconds I never asked for it and it never happened again. It happened exactly as Fr. Chad stated. I understood what I was saying. As soon as I realized what was happening I stopped open my eyes to see the Holy Eucharist passing directly in front of me in the hands of the priest. I am grateful for receiving the gift but I would not dare ask for it unless it were Gods will. Thanks be to God.
I have never had any issues with respect to ‘prayer in tongues’ I live a consecrated holy life married to one wife and we have six children, one married, so now seven. My prayer life without experiencing The Love of God, the gift of tongues and a deep love for our Lord Jesus Christ would be whimsical at best. With respect I can’t fathom how Father Ripperger can tear up my experiences with such an opinion and share it with others like that. The gift is certainly edifying for me yet I certainly don’t hold tightly to it as I realise love, faith and hope are indeed truly the point of living in Christ Jesus. And I have no issue with The Holy Bible, the sacraments of the church or praying the rosary ❤️💨🔥 This has been my experience for 40 years. Oh and I have completed postgraduate qualifications in Catholic theology. He Who IS God does do as He pleases – Psalm 135.
The New Testament talks about groups of people praising God and praying in tongues at the same time. Paul says he prays more in tongues than anyone else. It’s a prayer language! The other gift of tongues like a prophetic word needs interpretation. Sadly we don’t experience a lot of New Testament gifts of the Spirit in today’s Catholic masses. Furthermore Paul admonishes the church, that is everyone in the church, to strive for the gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. Why is Father Ripperger not teaching about that? We need more Holy Spirit, more gifts of the Spirit, more praying in tongues, not less.
Interesting because some of the most powerful exorcist priests who also have power gifts speak in tongues. Father Fortea has a talk 247 about those who criticize the use of tongues….the priest of divine uk, the priest of the St. Michael centre in the Philippines and I think also father Blount all speak in tongues.
Many years ago I had seen a lot of people speak in tongues at prayer meetings and in fact the first ever time was on a visit to a friends church . The lady spoke In this beautiful pleading language and I actually was deeply blessed by it as there were two interpretations given and though both were different in approach they both said the same thing in essence . It enabled me to see the real from the fake as I had seen both before . I was camping and walking around praising God and suddenly a language came into my vocabulary and I was slightly embarrassed and was not completely sure of it all . It was a deep praise language but it also has an intimacy that I cannot express between me and the Lord . It’s like I know why I’m doing it and I know what it is but I can’t express to you what it is as it’s too elaborate . Years later at what would become a more common aspect of my life’s ministry I was at a public deliverance meeting when demons started jumping around the room into women out of another woman ( Jezebel ) . I had much experience with this demon but had not identified it previously but now I knew what it was and the demon in this lady beside me looked at me and I just spoke in tongues at this devil and rebuked it and the look of fear that came over it I will never forget . I only utilize it in meetings rarely perhaps 3 times total in the last 5 years . As for the demons reaction they truly hate it and get afraid . It is my intimate language with God and I occasionally share it with others however I want to abide in good order and not cause a stumbling block to someone .
I would disagree with this priest when it comes to resting in the spirit and tongues. Maybe God gives it more freely than he thinks. Even if it is a gratuitous gift. Resting in the spirit is also an amazing healing gift. Some people get overly emotional and maybe that’s why it happens but I believe most of the time it is a real act of God and something that is very beautiful esp if you have experienced it.
I was in a Catholic charismatic group in the Philippines in the 1980s and received the gift of tongues. But when I heard Fr. Ripperger and other exorcists talk about the dangers of the charismatic gift of tongues, I immediately pray to denounce it and ask GOD to take away the fake gifts I received from the Charismatic group. Now I am Traditional Latin Catholic.
If you cannot pray for a gift, why does Paul tell the one who speaks in tongues in I Corinthians 14:13 to pray that he may interpret? The apostles prayed for God to stretch forth His hand to heal and to do signs and wonders, then they started doing more miracles. Isaiah also said, “Lord here I am, send me.”
True speaking in tongues is exactly as stated in the Bible, when the Holy Spirit came as tongues of fire on each person. ALL who were there heard what was being said in their own language at the same time. What is being passed off as “speaking in tongues” is nothing more than babble. No one understands what is being said! GOD IS TRUTH! What HE says to us is TRUTH. GOD will not communicate with us with babble. If someone is truly speaking in tongues, all who hear will understand what is being said, NO MATTER WHAT LANGUAGE THEY SPEAK! GOD SPEAKS AND “IS” TRUTH!!!
I Corinthians 14 is contradicting some of this talk. It is sad to hear a talk about spiritual gifts with so little scriptural references. It becomes apparent that Catholics really need to study the Bible and get some sound scriptural teaching on things. Church tradition can never contradict Holy Scripture.
What about when St. Paul says: “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels”? How is one ever supposed to speak in the tongues of angels if not for this gift? I’m not disagreeing with the first part of what you said, but I feel like there’s another form of this gift and I’m not finding an answer that makes 100% sense.
I have seen articles of “Catholic ” charismatics speaking in tongues. All talking at once and mostly babbling and repetition of “shalala’ over and over. I know a few who also call themselves Charismatic and they are the meanest people I know, lying continually, manipulating people, and completely living the reverse of “Do unto others”. As well, very arrogant and self-important. Their behavior, even though they arrogantly portrayal of themselves as “charismatic Catholics”, is completely shocking to me.
I find Father Ripperger’s talks fascinating. I’ve always wondered about the charasmatic church and if speaking in tongues was okay. When I was a little girl many many years ago I was taught this was evil. I have attended several healing masses at a Catholic charasmatic church in my city and I want to know if this is okay. I do find it a bit unnerving when they begin to speak and sing in tongues. And I have been slain in the spirit a few times. I went because I was having emotional problems after my mom died and my health took a downturn. I was very depressed because of this and felt I was going crazy and I couldn’t sleep. This did help me out of my severe depression. I still suffer from occasional bouts with it and still have trouble sleeping. So I really wanted to know if going to this church once in awhile is wrong?. Unfortunately the audio quality in the article is hard to understand and I couldn’t make out much even with headphones. Can someone tell me if it is wrong to attend this church. Thank you.
I was born and raised Southern Baptist / Assembly of God. I then got to studying with the Jehovah Witnesses and left as they are a controlling cult. Then for about another 6 months I got into Wicca tried a spell had a Panic Attack. I threw away all of that stuff. I repented and got back in with the Assembly of God. They got me into Speaking in Tongues. I doubted it though and was like I’m just making up stuff. They said not to question it. Anyway at age 21 I went through RCIA and became a confirmed Catholic. I’ve always loved Jesus all my life going to Sunday School, Vocation Bible School, and Youth Group. I’m so happy to be Catholic. I have went to two healing services over 20 years ago, and both times I fell back after being anointed and just felt so loved and at peace. It was in a Catholic Church with a Catholic Priest doing it. Anyway I agree that when I “spoke in tongues” over 24 years ago, it was just mumbo jumbo. Thanks for this article.
Let us discuss: 1:33 Do you not pray for your own salvation despite the fact that you cannot merit it? Doesn’t 1 Corinthians 14:1 at least say you should cooperate with God’s grace? 3:56 Doesn’t Paul say in 1 Corinthians 14:13,28 that one can pray in tongues without understanding what they pray? And that another, not him, could have the gift of interpretation? Not sure if it’s a good comparison but the dream of Nebuchadnezzar II was interpreted by Daniel, and Samuel didn’t understand God was calling him until Eli told him he should answer. In the meantime, I’ll read what Aquinas thinks.
Being born and raised as a Catholic in New England I do not know how to speak in tongues or am comfortable with it (I really don’t like holding hands in church) but I have gone to many retreats and Marian conferences where very Pious and holy people do pray this way on occasion so I think there is something to it. I was surprised when I saw some elderly Polish Marian priests (Divine Mercy) pray that way. Also what would be the gift of interpretation of tounges be then? It can’t just be an interpreter from the Berlitz school.
As a “tradismatic” can I give a hot take on why tongues showed up in the church only shortly after Vatican II? I think it was because without the Latin mass we as Catholics lost a contemplative, non-intellective way of sitting with God and just listening and receiving. The TLM used to afford that opportunity for silence and contemplation to every illiterate peasant for an hour every day. Now we go to mass and we have to deal with words – propositional knowledge – human reason – the priest’s sometimes unattractive way of speaking our language. When we had the TLM we didn’t need tongues. Now we do, in order to receive in the Spirit. Why do I think this? Because the joyful spiritual experience of speaking in tongues is duplicated, for me, only in the Latin Mass … and the rosary, which I also think fulfills a very similar function to tongues. Question: when I was in high school, I attended the national Steubenville Catholic Youth Conference and on the Saturday night there (cry night /adoration night) I experienced something I’d never seen before with Catholics. The priest walked through all the aisles holding the monstrance with the Eucharist in it, everyone did the sign of the cross, so far pretty normal nothing out of the ordinary. Someone on stage was playing guitar softly, and then the weird stuff started happening. People threw their hands up while praying like we were at a Revival, some kids and chaperones started speaking in tongues which I’d NEVER heard before as someone raised Catholic (but as someone who loves studying languages I knew it wasn’t a real language), and one girl across the aisle from me fell straight down hard passed out on the concrete floor. Everyone was so deep in prayer, kneeling crying, but I went across the aisle to the closest adult from that girl’s group to ask if anyone was going to check on her. The adult next to her said “oh, she’ll be fine, she’s been blessed by the Spirit of Sleep.” Though I grew up mostly Catholic, it was mixed with Protestantism too (Reformed specifically) and I’d only heard of the Holy Spirit as the only “holy” spirit, so I was suuuper confused by this Spirit of Sleep. But being a teenager, and seeing everyone else around me doing all this stuff, I felt like I was definitely doing something wrong. So I got on my knees too, didn’t throw my hands up since that still felt too foreign, but just knelt and prayed and tried and failed miserably to speak in tongues.
Remember also what St Peter says about St Paul’s Letters (I see many saying they know what St Paul is saying – just be careful): 15 And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 speaking of this * as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 2 Peter 3:15-16 RSV-CE
The apostle all spoke in tongues. Paul said he spoke in tongues more often than a church he was correcting. The Blessed Virgin Mary spoke in tongues. I was brought into the church through the charismatic renewal. The reason demon possessed people speak in languages they don’t know is because it mimics the gift of tongues. It is a language know to the demon but not the person. To throw away the charismatic gift is sad. Are there abuses? Yes, we are human. Does the fact that the sexual abuse by some priest invalidate the priesthood? Of course not. What I see in person that speak in tongues in a life long commitment to Christ and his church. A rich pray life and a thirst for scripture. The scripture say test all things and hold to that which is good. The fruit of the charismatic gift in my live is very good. It is very good in other people’s lives. Tongues are important because we have so much pride in what we say. Tongues is turning over that pride in your life and giving the Holy Spirit a biblical church sanctioned way to pray. Pope John Paul II pray for a new Pentecost. Pope Benedict and Francis have both endorsed it. Don’t throw away a gift the Holy Spirit gives you.
This is exactly why non Christians dont want anything to do with the Church. We have turned Gods word into a theological argument. The bible is supposed to be lived, not just learnt. The gift of tongues is a wonderful gift and for those who practice it, read acts4,5. Speaking in tongues has changed my life, I used to eat my finger nails for 56 years and now I dont, read the bible 1 cor 14v4 and jude v 20, I can testify that’s speaking in tongues has built up my inner man. Does God hand out useless gifts?
Tongues were for the apostolic age. When the apostles would go to a new country and didn’t understand the language the HOLY SPIRIT would speak they them. Gibberish is not tongues. Acts 2:6 “Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.”
I hear all these talks about charismatic Catholics and they are eye-opening. But what is someone to do if their family members are involved in this movement? My wife and her family are very much involved in this renewal and have been for A long time. They are strong Catholics and are very virtuous and devoted to our Lady and I am very happy about that. However, I am concerned they are practicing error. (Tongues, visions, etc.) They are also firm believers in medjugorge which i am also skeptical of. What can I do as a husband to help my wife and her family without offending and while being prudent and virtuous. Please pray for me, this been bothering me lately thank you.
You’ll know a tree by its fruits. A bad tree cannot of course bear a good fruit. How about the testimonies of many Catholics whose lives were changed after joining the Catholic Life in the Spirit Seminar? Can we limit the Holy Spirit from doing what HE wants to do and how wants to do it? THE SPIRIT BLOWS WHEREVER HE WISHES because HE IS GOD. The Holy Spirit is God. And it is only through the Holy Spirit that we can declare with Christian Authenticity that Jesus is Lord! Look at the fruits Reverend. Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement is a gift from God. These Charismatic gifts of healing, miracles, discernment, tongues, etc. are tools given by God through the Holy Spirit to build the Church.
Jesus clearly said his followers would speak in new tongues. “And these signs shall follow them that believe, in my name shall cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues…” Mar 16:17 So was Jesus wrong, or was he just lying when he said this? Seems that if Jesus said it, that should be good enough for me. Paul wanted all believers to speak in tongues in 1Cor, since it is personal edification and prayer to God. You’d have to throw out all those scriptures, along with other portions of the new testament as well. Congratulations on fighting the devil’s side for him. I’m sure the enemy delights when believers reject the gifts that God has clearly given to his church in scripture. If I were the devil, I would try to find a way to prevent believers from exercising their spiritual and supernatural gifts as well. The enemy has disarmed the church by simply talking believers out of the tools that God has clearly ordained in scripture. And just because some folks misuse the gifts, or even if the enemy has counterfeit manifestations, it doesn’t mean that the genuine gifts do not exist. I’ve been to crazy gatherings where tongues are being abused or are just ‘not right’. The Corinthians were apparently abusing the gift, but Paul didn’t tell them that the gift was false or demonic. He just instructed them in proper use of the gift. I have also been in situations where tongues were done in either a beautiful expression of worship in the presence of God or in a tone of spiritual warfare.
Yes, the point was very well put about the charismatics and their practise of speaking in tounges. But dear friends I would like to add that all our denominations in some way split apart due to doctrinal issues, and in some way All of our denominational churches may be wrong. Take for example the Catholics, they believe that Peter is the mediator between man and God and he plays role of High priest, but the Holy spirit would do the Job for Us, and Jesus called Simon- Peter, Simon was His name but Peter(Petros) was used by Jesus, which meant stone(Petros) but the Rock in that statement was Jesus. So friends Peter is nearly a Stone but the Rock on which our church is built on is Jesus, for He is the Rock of Ages. So friends let us be no Denominational and learn the doctrines of the Bible through non denominational Authors, and best is to learn from a non denominational teacher and understand the deep truths in the word. 😉
Years ago I had a cousin that went to a healing service. My cousin didn’t believe in being slayed in the spirit. She went because she had metastasized breast cancer. The priest who had the gift of healing called people forward to be prayed over. Many people were being slayed in the spirit. She did not believe in being slayed. She did, however, yearn to be healed. After the service was over, when the priest was leaving the auditorium, her husband walked over and asked him if he would come over and pray with my cousin. Her friend, and a comforting gesture, had her arm around my cousin. The priest walked over, prayed for my cousin, and laid hands on her. My cousin went down, and so did the friend who had her arm around her…my cousin said it was a very peaceful experience. I’m sorry, but I think it’s real. I have a respect Fr. Ripperger, but the the Holy Spirit moves in way we don’t understand or expect sometimes.
The gift of tongue is biblical. So it definitely exists. (1 Corinthians)But there is also the gift to interpret the tongue. People sometimes have 1 or both. Thats why some people only can speak it but not understand or interprete it and people can do both or just interprete it. But I understand it is sometimes abused and as you know, satan always tries to mock and imitate whatever Jesus does and thats why there are evil spirits that do so. But we have to trust in the Lord and ask Him for discernment to confirm first of all that it comes from Him and also when and how to use it. I personally received the gift of tongue during a retreat and at first it was uncontrollable. Later I asked the Lord to guide me and moderate it. And later on He would guide me on when to use it. I don’t know, it has brought great fruits to my life and the people around us. “For the fruit we will know”…I think thats a good sign of if it comes from God or not.
My question would be.. who is to stop what god goes.. not even the church. if the church believes that they are getting their authority from god, and not from a place or a object or a person but God alone Jesus. Then there suddenly all your questions answered. Jesus is not just another religion it’s a experience it’s realtionship.. it’s real
I love father ripper. But I disagree with him on this one. I have been speaking in tongues for 5 years. It has helped me tremendously. It helped me to remove sin, obtain the fruits of the spirit, I knew at that very moment that God was real. The night that I prayed in tongues for the first time. Sins that I struggled with for years. Fell completely off and I have never struggled with them since. The next day I literally went through my house purged everything that wasn’t of God. The best way I can explain it is that It literally felt like the scales off of my eyes fell off. I could finally see my sin. I also knew at that moment if I would have died before then that I would have went to hell. I was a completely different person for the better. It lite a fire and a hunger for God like never before. I never fasted, prayed, read the bible, or serve the church. But now those things come easy to me. I’m beyond grateful for it.
I went to a charismatic parish a religious brother (in English) and a woman were praying over me in tongues. The brother praying was fine but when the woman was “praying in tongues ” I felt very agitated and immediately afterwards became very distressed, uncontrollably crying and even though Jesus was on the altar I bolted out quickly afterwards very upset and felt suicidal. No doubt the woman had demonic influence. It took me days to recover. Kyrie Eleison. I would absolutely avoid it.
My question is, if we aren’t to pray for tongues, why does Paul say to in 1 Corinthians 14? And why does he talk so much about “striving” for the gifts of the spirit, and how he wants everyone to pray in tongues? I definitely see why one should be careful with it. But I wonder how this can be only a gratuitous gift given what Paul says about it.
I see nothing about Praying in Tongues. Most people who say so lack the Holy Spirit in them because if truly the Spirit of God comes upon you, you speak in different tongues. Some it is just a gift . Tongues of fire came upon the Apostles during Pentecost after Jesus’ resurrection and they began speaking in Different languages. Please read the Bible!! Nothing is psychological, it is more Spiritual 🙏
I just want to tell that some catholic exorcist priests in our place called kerala(in india)teaches us that gift of tongues is a real gift from the Holy spirit(even the babbling type of tongues)and i have heard an exorcist priest Father Dominic Valanmanal praying in the babbling type of tongues. He is a very famous catholic priest in our place. I know that some protestants produce fake sounds telling they received gift of tongues which caused confusion in the minds of many people, unfortunately causing some people to think it is diabolic. But i myself and some of my friends received gift of tongues(the babble type) while we were praising The Most Holy God Yeshua. Also i had not asked God at that time for the gift of tongues and i even didn’t know what tongues is when God gave it to me since i was only around 13 years old then. I obviously respect this exorcist priest but in the case of tongues i believe what the catholic exorcist priests like Father Dominic Valanmanal, Fr Jose Uppani, Fr Thomas Vazhacharikkal(exorcist priests from India)taught us. Gift of tongues from Holy spirit is real even though some protestants fake it.
There is a few issues according to scripture in the coverage of speaking in tongues which may indicate that which is portrayed in this article, may be lacking somewhat by a not full understanding. I still have to do further study on this myself, but I make this comment to see if any of you have some (not personnel) but reference teaching material to cover these things I bring up. I am interested in Paul saying he spoke in the tongues of Angels, so this potentially goes beyond the known human languages. The tongues of Angels was not mentioned in this article. Albeit though this also would only come as the Spirit wills. Here are some reference verses to look at and look up further as to context. (1Co 13:1 KJV) 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become (as) sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. (1Co 14:5 KJV) 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater (is) he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. (1Co 14:18 KJV) 18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: (Act 10:46 KJV) 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, (Act 19:6 KJV) 6 And when Paul had laid (his) hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Father Rippeger’s opinion is not the teaching of the Church, or for that matter the Doctor’s of the Church. In the Catechism look up Glossolalia…. Here is the relevant passage in the Catechism: 2003 Grace is first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. There are sacramental graces, gifts proper to the different sacraments. There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning “favor,” “gratuitous gift,” “benefit.” Whatever their character – sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues – charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. They are at the service of charity which builds up the Church. Mark 16 v 17 Jesus in the Gospel says 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; St Teresa of Avila, Doctor of the Church Theresa’s Tongues In the midst of these experiences that are both painful and delightful together, our Lord sometimes gives the soul feelings of jubilation and a strange prayer it doesn’t understand. What I’m saying seems like gibberish, but certainly the experience takes place in this way, for the joy is so excessive the soul wouldn’t want to enjoy it alone but wants to tell everyone about it so that they might help this soul praise our Lord.
Why don’t more Catholics know this? Many think they are speaking in tongues like the Apostles. It is difficult to make them understand the lie because the Charismatic movement is allowed by the Church. Why did they allow this in the Church if it invites demons? The Church should protect us from these type of things. What has happened to our Catholic Church? I expect his from Pentecostals, not Catholics.

This is one time where I would say that Fr. Ripperger is not totally accurate in what he is saying. My entire conversion was unleashed by the laying on of hands by a very holy priest and I went down like a ton of bricks. I was terrified. I had no idea what was happening to me and I could not move, hear, see etc., for about five minutes until I could crawl away. I knew NOTHING about any of this, had only just discovered that God was real. The next day, my entire life started changing and conforming or converting to all that God wanted. I was led by the Holy Spirit for months. Yes, people can rest in Spirit and be totally united with the Lord and it isn’t psychological, it is real.
It is interesting are many non catholics love to bring Mary down and make their arguments that Mary did not die for us We catholics know that and we don’t make Mary a goddess. We honor her as the mother of our Saviour . Mary said yes to God the Father so salvation could come to mankind. Her obedience is admired. I love her dearly, she is my mother . I also know and I am confident of that, there is no body on earth who loves Jesus like Mary or who have experienced the pain of Jesus agony and death like Mary. ” A SWORD PIERCED HER SOUL ” Like the prophecy said. Have you ever have your soul pierced and experienced the extend of her pain,those of you who made it your christian ‘s duty to attack her character on a regular basis. Paul wrote in I Corinthians 14 that he spoke in tongues more than they all _in the church_ he would rather speak 5 words with his mind than 10,000 words in an unknown tongue. Notice the contrast– speaking in tongues verses speaking with his mind. And there is no warning in Paul’s teaching on speaking in tongues that the believers in Christ were in danger of becoming demonized by speaking in tongues.
I have no opinion about speaking in tongues in particular cases, simply because I am not God and I lack discernment, so I don’t want to hurt anyone with my judgement. Let’s try to apply logic here asking this: 1) question: What if both sides are right? What if that babbling is sometimes 100% fake, but sometimes it’s 100% real?🤔 St. Paul talks about speaking the language of angels,right? So, what IF one person’s “babbling” is demonic and other person’s “babbling” is a language of saint angels’ ? Is it possible? If yes, then in both cases we would have speaking in angelic language, yet from two different sources, so to speak. Another thing is, that many exorcists tell, that demons easily speak Latin, Italian, Chinese or whatever other human language. Let’s say we see a person in a church, who speaks …I don’t know… Portuguese. I know how Portuguese sounds, but I don’t know this language. How can I know if this is a pious believer who’s praying some chaplet or other prayers, or a demon possessed person ??? 🤔 Or what if let’s say I’d hear a person speaking some really weird / funny language which sounds rather stupid,I can’t recognize? Should I assume this is a possessed person ONLY because I don’t understand that weird language? 2) question: if “speaking in tongues” is only demonic, then what if a priest who is an exorcist “speaks in tongues” ? We would have an ultra dangerous and somehow impossible situation: how can a person who speaks demonic language also cast out demons in the Name of Jesus?
That is because they were praying in tongues, not speaking in tongues, which always needs interpreted or disregarded. “The Spirit prays in us in groaning we cannot understand.” Fr Chad Ripperger is misleading people and does not know what he is talking about. He is talking about demons, not Christians who have prayed to the God of heaven and earth, and not been disappointed. He is uneducated about the ways of the Holy Spirit and plays pick and choose with the things of God and Scripture. I am going to pray God grace him with the gift of tongues and baptism in the Holy Spirit for the sake of Jesus and His church.
I speak in tongues. I started speaking in tongues when I was 15 years plus. I was laid hand upon and was asked to call the name Jesus. As I was, calling Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. I started speaking in tongues. But above all after that experience, my love for Jesus Christ grew more. This is 32 yrs after that.
In scripture Romans 8:26 when it says the Holy Spirit speaks for us in our weakness with groaning too deep for words, what does that mean? Sometimes I have deep intentions and simply saying or repeating my intention seems like my intention is still so deep inside. Are we not suppose to open our heart so deeply even if calling on the Holy Ghost?
Hey I was confused by this message, I hope you don’t mind me asking about this… I noticed Paul wrote more than once about having desire and allowing these gifts… So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:39 It also seemed to me like he wanted all of them to speak with tongues… Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. 1 Corinthians 14:5 What are your opinions regarding these scriptures? I am very confused and want to know..
Prayer language. This doesn’t happen often. The man that speak in tongue doesn’t know what he is saying nor the others (1 Co 14, 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.) ; his gift comes from the Lord. . There are cases were the speaker doesn’t know the language but the interpreter interprets in to the language of the group. Tongues is the least important of the Gifts. We have people that interpret in Spanish or Portuguese Churches in Salem Ma. And elsewhere. So an English speaking person is welcome.
Well, I disagree. I’ve been slain in the spirit by wonderful, holy and prayerful priests. I am always so grateful. And it is NOT something I do to myself; It just happens. I am grateful b/c it assures me I am not as far away from God as I have so often felt. He is saying, “I’m here. I love you.” I feel ‘rested assured’, if you will. I am grateful. And I never could conjure up tongues. I always wondered about it when I observed it in the renewal. It seemed so weird. But it is oftentimes incredibly real and very terribly authentic. When someone interprets in a healthy holy-spirit inspired group, there is prophecy. Souls are encouraged and inspired. I see nothing wrong with that. When I have done it myself, it is almost always when I am alone and on my knees and praying fervently. I am not verbose in it. I am quiet in it. He knows my temperament and He meets me where I am. He assures me He hears my prayer and is responding. I do think there has been a black cloud over my life, a ‘pall’ if you will. I would like to have it lifted. I have been sad and downcast all of my adult life. I am afraid of happiness. It dissipates and does not last. I have had NO guidance or support. I am hitting my elderly years, now. I hate thinking I have had a life wasted. Time will tell. I would love the assurance I am in His will. I would love to have what I perceive to be abundant life–like others have who have traveled all around the world and been prosperous. I think that would be fantastic.

Re: Worst possession he’s ever seen was someone who asked for the gift of tongues from God. – So he’s saying that sometimes when we ask for a fish God gives us scorpions? Seems like the kind of Father Jesus said God is not. Re: Two kinds of tongues -If the only kind of tongues in scripture are those where the speaker understands and is either speaking their own language while others understand in their own or where the speaker is speaking a language they do not know naturally, them why does The Apostle Paul teach in 1st Corinthians chapters 12-14 to not speak in tongues publicly without an interpreter present? If the speaker understands what he is saying in both cases then the speaker can interpret themself and there is never need for am interpreter like the Apostle calls for. Interestingly, the Apostle makes a passing reference to tongues of angels in the context of the gift of tongues, so it seems, in light of that and my previous points, a third kind of tongues may likely be a kind where no one knows what is being said. This, of course, is a private kind of tongues without and interpretor per The Apostles teaching. This actually would seem to make that third kind possibly line up with what that same Apostle refers to in Romans when he says we often pray in groans and utterances our minds do not understand and are understood by God alone (see Romans 8:26). Re: cannot be merited therefore should not be asked for -His reasoning that they cannot be merited means that they should not be ask for sounds identical to Calvinist nonsense on salvation.
Hey man I have a question, so if somebody who speaks english, also speak in tongues when praying… It’s authentic only if that tongue it’s a real language (like french or chinese) right? And if it’s not, I mean, in case it’s just Gibberish then it means is fake because it comes from the enemy (diabolical)? Thanks for your time, is just that this is new to me but I’m happy God is revealing me the truth in a world of lies.
One thing i found wrong with this teaching so far is, they assume their catholic views are correct. No, their catholic view is not all according to The Word, if it was then why call it some other view or “way”? Just call it what it is. The Word of God. Give up that name and simply call yourself a Christian and do as jesus christ commissioned his disciples. Go and preach the kingdom of god is at hand, heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and cast out demons. Do not give your belief in the truth a denomination, go and pull the plank out of your own eye before pointing out the stick on your brother’s. When you show them the word of god. Show it to them calling it the word of god, not “the catholic way”.
Most charismatics are plain deluded when it comes to the correct understanding of this, and even take some kind of pride in manifesting the charismatic gifts as if it’s a sign of their personal holiness and their pursuit of truth and mission. Total spiritual blindness. Humility dictates that we do not seek these things ever especially the laity. The charistmatic movement started outside the church with the origins of rhe Pentecostal movement and found its way into the Catholic church in around the late 60’s after vatican 2 ( conveniently) it never would have got a foothold in the pre vatican 2 Church and most likely would have been condemned, seeked out and shut down. The Holy Ghost does not work outside the Church to inform it of a new teaching version of His gifts, especially one that is in error.
