Can Bards Alter The Spells They Know?

In the past, spellswaps for bards were limited by one spell swap per level. However, Tasha’s optional feature allows for cantrip replacement at levels where an ability score increase is obtained. Bards have spells known and can expend spell slots to cast one of their known spells. For example, a Warlock gaining 5th level gains a new 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level spell and can swap out a spell they already know for a different one.

Bards use a “spells known” mechanic similar to a Sorcerer, so their abilities are limited to the spells they know. They can replace one spell known every level, so it is not worrying if they choose a spell at low level. The Bard Spell List includes new and established spells added to the Bard Spell List. Bards can also choose to change spells when they level up and any of the spells they have learned with spells from the Bard spell list.

The current version of Magical Secrets allows Bards to pick two spells from any spell list and add them to their spells known at levels 10, 14, and 18. The upcoming Player’s Handbook will introduce this feature. As long as a bard knows a spell, they can cast it if they have the necessary spell slot available. Each time a bard gains a level, they can replace a known spell with another from the Bard spell list.

In D and D 5e, bards can swap out spells learned via Magical Secrets upon leveling up. They can now choose from the Cleric, Druid, and Wizard spell lists whenever they gain a newly created spell.
