Can Blue Magic Harm Hair?

Blue Magic is an oil-based hair grease that is popular among African American hair care communities. It is marketed to keep the hair and scalp moisturized, prevent breakage, and split ends. The ingredients in Blue Magic are generally safe and may not cause allergic reactions. Its thick consistency and ingredients make it a great sealant for preserving hair moisture, which is beneficial for hair growth.

Blue Magic Conditioner Hair Dress is an OG hair grease marketed to keep the hair and scalp moisturized and prevent breakage and split ends. However, the question of whether Blue Magic hair grease causes hair loss remains a subject of debate. The chemicals found in Blue Magic hair products can result in hair damage, as the ingredients like mineral oil and petroleum jelly can coat the hair shaft.

Blue Magic Conditioner Hair Dress is safe to use on braided or weaved hair, as it helps condition hair as it grows. It is important to note that hair grease was traditionally used on scalps during slavery but not to help grow hair. While it is impossible to avoid harmful ingredients, it is possible to find them in lower concentrations.

Blue Magic works well on both relaxed and natural styles, as well as course or multi-textured hair. Hair greases like DAX, Ultra Sheen, and Blue Magic were once considered harmful to hair growth. However, it is essential to prioritize products that prioritize the African American hair care community and avoid harmful ingredients.

Is using blue shampoo bad for your hair?

Blue shampoo should be used sparingly, not as a replacement for regular shampoo, as it can dry and build up on hair. It should be incorporated into your routine once to twice per month, or weekly depending on the brassiness you want to counteract. You can increase the effect of blue shampoo by letting it sit on your hair for three to seven minutes before rinsing. If you find blue shampoo too strong or potent, you can dilute it by mixing it with equal parts of your regular shampoo.

Always follow with a conditioner to soften and smooth your hair. This cruelty-free, plant-based blue shampoo is known for neutralizing unwanted warm tones, being gentle, and having an amazing scent, earning it its status as a cult favorite.

Can blue magic be used daily?

Leave-in conditioners are also suitable for all hair types. The product’s shelf life is not specified, but it is recommended to replace it after 24 months of use to ensure optimal results. The leave-in conditioners work well on all hair types.

Does blue light damage hair?

Exposure to blue light can cause hair loss in both men and women due to damage to hair follicles on the scalp. This damage can lead to dryness and strand breakage, exacerbated by blue light. To prevent this, it is recommended to avoid bright light for at least an hour before bed, including reading on devices with blue light, watching TV or videos online, and turning down the brightness of your device’s display and backlight. Protective eyewear, such as Blue Light combating glasses, can also help reduce the negative effects of blue light on the eyes.

What is the purpose of blue magic hair grease?

At less than five dollars for a 12 ounce jar, it was affordable. However, as natural hair content emerged online in the early 2000s, some people switched to cremes and gels from brands like Shea Moisture, Carol’s Daughter, and others made with natural ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and tea tree oil.

Can I use blue shampoo every time?

Blue shampoo is a popular choice for reducing visible brass in brown hair. It provides an instant brightening effect that can eliminate orange tones for 2-3 washes. However, applying more blue shampoo before the effects fade can backfire, as it can darken strands or make the color appear muddy. To reap its benefits without risking discoloration, try to swap it into your routine about once a week. If you go overboard, use a clarifying shampoo to remove unwanted pigment.

To use blue shampoo on brown hair, follow the instructions on the shampoo label. The amount of blue shampoo needed depends on the formula. Regular shampoo should be concentrated on the roots and scalp to wash away oils and buildup, while blue shampoo is best applied from roots to ends to ensure the blue pigments are evenly distributed throughout the hair. If you go overboard, use a clarifying shampoo to remove unwanted pigment.

Does blue color damage hair?

Despite the fact that the bleaching process can safely be used to dye hair blue, it can nevertheless cause damage to the hair.

Who owns Blue Magic hair products?

Strickland and Company, a white-owned company, owns various hair and skincare brands, including African Gold, Artra, Black and White, Blue Magic, DuSharme, Five Star, Gloss 8, Glover’s, Just So, Nadinola, Othine, Worlds of Curls, and Sulfur8. • I grew up on water, Ultra Sheen, Sulfur 8 & Pink Lotion. My aunt every 2 week routine was wash with flex shampoo/conditioner, towel dried, palm full of pink lotion & some sulfur 8, twisted and air dried over night, then pressed in the am. Before my aunt started that process my hair was stuck on pause. She DID NOT MASSAGE my scalp unless washing serves as a massage. I started using all these new ” natural products” that all you hair guru’s speak of and my hair went back to pause! I went back to water, moisturizer and grease, my hair started growing again. I think people need to do what works for them. If it don’t apply let it fly. GREASE AND WATER WAS THE STAPLE OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND MAJORITY OF THE GIRLS I GREW UP WITH HAIR WAS SHOULDER – ALMOST WAIST LENGTH. Soooo idk why we stopped a method that worked and started paying all this money for products that’ don’t work as well on type 4 hair for some people.

  • In addition to the scalp massage element, grease could be said to ‘make hair grow’ because it is a super sealant. If hair is properly moisturized and STAYS moisturized then hair breaks less and retains length. So it’s not really doing anything for actual growth but it can be a God send for people like myself who have high porosity hair and experience issues with moisture retention and frizz. My hair stays soft longer, as a relaxed girl it keeps my new growth soft and supple, my blow outs and straight styles stay that way until i wash because there’s no moisture going in our out after I wash and apply my grease. Oils simply didn’t work for me…coconut oil breaks me out horribly. My Blue Magic, Sulphur 8 and Vaseline keep me covered. Plus i can base and cover my ends before a relaxer to prevent run off damage. I have fallen in love with grease all over again

  • I never heard of single strand knots until I went natural again 7 years ago. As a matter of fact, I’ve been using these natural haircare lines because of wearing a wash-n-go, which is when I started getting single strand knots. I really believe it’s from having the hair out often which cause the curls to wrap around each other. Also, I didn’t learn until a few years ago that when wearing a wash-n-go, you need to cowash in between wash days to keep it well hydrated. When coming up most of us didn’t have our hair out, it was always braided or twisted and if we had it down, it had been straightened or roller set, hence no knots. Old school worked.

  • I took your advice last year and stopped using grease. I noticed in the Georgia summer heat, my daughter’s hair was frying in the sun and my dumb self wondered why! I found your website and faithfully listened to your knowledge, used the products you use and her hair is growing beautifully! I can’t thank you enough! Love you guys! 💋

  • Hey Lin, thanks a lot for telling us what grease is actually for. Some people’s scalp got clogged from grease once perms & relaxers got super popular some didn’t wash hair timely after that, until we got schooled. Before some people got their hair pressed & curled every two weeks (I did) so even if you were using grease regularly the right or wrong way your hair was washed on schedule. Grease is a a good sealant like some other products as well.

  • My hair used to eat up grease back in the day as a kid. Now, that I’ve switched to oils (Coconut, Extra Virgin Olive, Peppermint, etc.) My hair stays moist, soft, and not as tangled as before. As a matter of fact, my hair texture seems to be much softer now than it’s ever been in my life! I’m not bashing grease or anyone who still uses it but my hair seems to benefit more from oils and deep conditioning.

  • I grew up on hair grease and till this day I still use it. I have severe dry hair. I can moisturize my hair and literally 2 days later. It feels like some dry straws! And I’m African-American with a nice texture. But it’s just dry all the time. So grease works for me and it grows my hair. Can’t explain it all I know is that it works for me personally!❤

  • For me…I am done with all these products supposedly good for natural hair. All I know is that my hair is softer and the moisture is locked in with good ole fashioned grease. When I grew up in the 1950s most women used grease and hot combed their hair (not flat iron.) I look at the pictures of women back then…no locs or weaves. Natural hair down the back. And mine was long as well until I started using so called ‘better’ products for Black hair. So I have gone back to old school. I keep my scalp clean but I spritz with water, grease my hair and twist it up.

  • Ok, ok….grease does have some benefits😂🤣! And since I have high porosity hair that loves to take up on itself…I might give that a try! Now that tip for swimming…. that’s priceless😉. But hopefully we don’t have any pull spills in the Caribbean on spring break from all the greased up sisters….lol!!! But seriously I cannot tell you enough how I appreciate the hair wisdom you share with us. And you bring facts with receipts and some much needed humor. You are so appreciated and loved my friend💞!!!!

  • I used grease when I was young. You know at home, getting my hair straightened at the kitchen stove. From what I can remember and pics from the old days, my hair wasn’t too cute. As I got older with Relaxers, I stopped using it. Now natural for 2 1/2 years, I still don’t use it and my hair is actually quite beautiful.. Horn tooting😂😂. I used to message early in my nat. hair routine then I stopped. I just started back with the message and I love the way it feels. FYI- You are fab!!!

  • As a person who is a licensed cosmetologist myself and a person who also suffer with dermatology issues with my own skin and with my hair Medically, I have always and will continue to be a person to DISLIKE HAIR GREASE… It is a huge NO for myself I totally agree with him Whenever I talk about hair and skin My suggestion to anyone please do not ask me about any brand of hair grease because I will say NO I Commend him on educating the public about the good and bad of using HAIR GREASE PRODUCT

  • Discovered your website about a month ago while looking for a hair braiding tutorial and I’ve been perusal ever since! Thanks for sharing your years of education with us you’re a breath of fresh air in the sea of confusion they call YouTube. If I have to hear things like all silicones are bad etc. Lawd a mercy anyway thanks I appreciate you!

  • Thx…for info…I use the LCO method for extreme desert scalp and hair which has help me alot and I purchased the sleep cap you recommended and I’m finally able to keep on my head at night.. I have to constantly keep my hair moisturized because I have overkill sweat glands and I’m in menopause as well…so at times I’m a walking fountain…lol..so my hair drys up quickly…I’m am very happy that you use this platform to help and educate us all…we appreciate you and much love to you and family💜🥰

  • Thank you for this informed talk about the benefits and real issues if grease is used in our hair regimens. I felt it would be a good sealant only if I used it. I didn’t even perceive that it could help reduce my single strand knots. I really appreciate this as I bought a jar and then had reservations about using it.

  • I am absolutely loved this article so unbiased and so informative. Grease is a preference and I have re-discovered it as a sealant but it will not be gracing my scalp, however I have seen the tremendous benefits of applying it to my hair. My hair has always not been a fan of oils as a sealant infact it makes my hair so frizzy so I stopped using most oils expect castor oil only when my hair is soaking wet but in small amounts. Putting grease back into my regime has allowed my hair to actually stay moisturised, less frizzy and more protected and best of all less shedding and breakage which is allowing my hair to grow because its in a cocoon with the leave in applied before the grease and I am not going back. I have managed to refine my haircare routine and my hair is much healthier.

  • Great article…. just as a medic I want to advice though for seborrheic dermatitis the initial recommendation is to use a comb and gently remove the flakes then use an emollient such as petroleum jelly esp in infants and toddlers with frequent hair washing IF that doesn’t work then you will need medicated shampoos. AND natural oils like olive oil in a study may be an excellent medium for some fungal infection to grow worsening SD. Just wanted to clarify that. Love ur website just found it 😬

  • My mom has that exact kind of dermatitis you were talking about! It’s horrible, and nothing works. She has tried everything. There was a medicated mousse she was prescribed, but it’s $500 for a few ounces. It works, but no one wants to keep paying that! She was recently talking about trying grease, but I’ll give her this info. Do you have any recommendations I can give her? Thank you!

  • First of all -they aint paying me nothing…but I was frying my hair using too much grease and a few months ago after talking to my stylist and finally LISTENING to her i started using Influance products my hair stopped breaking. I wash it, apply Jamaican Mango & Lime Island Oil while its wet & then blow it out. Then put a little Influance Therma-Seal mixed with Influance Curl Wax and part in small sections and curl it. My hair is thin but tight at the roots and used to dry up easily. Also I ordered a Silk scarf off Amazon to wear at night and that has made a huge difference and stopped breakage.

  • Thank you for giving a us for informing us (as professional ). It’s no wonder many are using grease. Personally I stop using grease when I stop using a hot comb (our parent never let me and my sister get perm), so I get around 22 years old. Now I return to my natural hair texture. I didn’t we could use grease before going to a pool (I’ll keep it mind). Thanks for another informative article.

  • I am here to disclose that last week I used vaseline, I washed my hair today and it did wash out with a sulfate free shampoo. I also coated my hands with it and washed them with the shampoo and it was gone with one wash (although I always wash twice to make sure my hair is clean and ready to be styled). So… You don’t need harsh shampoos to wash out pretoleum jelly 🤷🏽‍♀️

  • I wish I had discovered grease sooner but I’m glad I did! I grew up on it. But when I became an adult and wanted to go natural I tried to go natural. Being natural has been extremely hard so many downs very few ups. But then I had a daughter and said I need to get it together! One day I decided to go back to my roots BEST DECISION EVER! After shampooing and conditioning going in with grease on my 4c is the BEST THING I COULD HAVE EVER DONE! It made my hair soooo soft! My hair hasn’t felt this moisturized and soft while dry for as long as I can remember. My daughter has beautiful 4c hair, it’s softer than mine. But just like mines after shampoo, conditioning, and oiling (usually with coconut, olive,or avocado or all mixed together) once her hair is dry it feels dry or brittle but you can feel the oil. Like mine it would be impossible to comb without wetting with water and adding leave in. But baby once I added the grease to her routine her hair became soooo soft and as it dried it stayed soft and I could comb through it! Sooo happy I discovered this. Happy that my baby is going to grow up loving her 4c unlike me ❤️ must apply while the hair is wet.

  • I live in Trinidad n Tobago. I went natural 7 years ago…with 3 big chops since. I got caught up in the YouTube natural hair movement of no petroleum no sulphate shsmpoo preepoo, cowash. .,etc etc etc..it has been very very expensive and mind bongling. I threw out all products end of 2019 took hair cut. I now make my hair grease with mostly olive oil castor oil and essential oils just how my mother made it for her girls hair and we all had very long hair past shoulder length back then. Weekly shampoo n conditioner back then was with the prickly pear gel. Now 2020, with my homemade hair grease My hair is now free and growing, and i am stress free. I find the popular imported ones are much too oily for our climate and tends to dry hair, Your expert advise on the need to use sulphate shampoo. Thank you. I gave a massive prickly pear cactus in my front yard and using the gel on natural hair makes it very very soft indeed. What’s your take on this ?

  • I even had a beautiful Silk Press back in November, unfortunately, my ignorance about the SILICONES used during that process, led to 5 months of horrendous breakage, and bald spots of which I am just now recovering from by The Grace of God, with lots of water, Clarified cleansing, hair masking, deep conditioning, vinegar rinses, leave-in conditioning and–good ole hair grease (LOL) I also contribute a lot of props to Miss Cathy Howse, (Black Hair Care II) the first pioneer of Black Hair Care, citing the lack of MOISTURE as being the Black Woman’s long time enemy towards the lack of hair growth and retention. I thank you for your informative articles

  • Linwood.. honeyy.. do you remember Isodine/ IsoPlus? My sister and I are 10yrs apart.. she was home for a funeral.. I noticed that her hair line was receding.. but it was really bad in the temple area. I had some Isodine.. put some in the balding areas at the temples. She was home about 3-4 weeks… She started getting strands of hair on both sides! I told her to get a case of it.. she didn’t.. she’s not the kind to do that.. and right now her hair line is almost ear to ear.. GONE. NOW ME.. I never liked my hair feeling greasy.. but I would oil my scalp a couple of times a month.. and everyday give my hair an excellent hair brushing to distribute the natural oils throughout my hair. There was another product called Anzalae.. had bergamot.. other skin healthy ingredients.. it was THICK and heavy so I used just a dab to my scalp and brush well.. my hair went CRAZY.. I’ve been looking for it.. can’t find it.

  • I keep my hair in twists and use petroleum free grease after my water-based moisturizer. My hair holds moisture till wash day. I like grease because a little goes a long way. I don’t have to use a sulfate shampoo. 2-3 washes of shampoo and I get lather on the first wash. I wash weekly. My fave greases are from Natural Oasis, G Naturals, and Kemistry Organics.

  • Dear Linwood, I really appreciate your humor. You always catch me off- guard with your shenanigans & comments. I laugh so loudly that one day my neighbors are going to bang on the walls to tell me to pipe down!!😂😂😂 I live in Spain in an area where there is no one who knows how to do my hair. I would have to travel more than 3-1/2 hours one-way to get my hair done. So, thank you kindly for this & your other professional, wonderfully instructional articles. I know that there are many other non-military sistas living in S.Korea, Japan, Europe, some Latin American countries who have no professionals to do their hair either, so your website is a life saver. Blessings to you & your sweet family. Barbara🌺✨🎶🎵✨🌺✨✨🎵🎶👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽✨🌺👑

  • Hi @Linwood, my mom used to “greeze” my scalp every day if not every other day. My hair always just needed grease and water, and it looked so good the next day when I would take the braids out. Now, that I’m grown, I always wondered why my scalp just seems to “soak” up the hair grease. My face is not greasy and I don’t have acne, so I’m not sure where the grease is going or why it doesn’t look like I put anything on my scalp! Oh, and my hair isn’t greasy the next day either. Actually, I can grease it every night and plait it up to keep it looking good. But, I never understood why it just seems to “drink” it up. Any ideas, or maybe I just answered my own question? Oh and I enjoy your articles!

  • I can’t use Coconut oil but I love to cook with it, and my mother did use Dixie Peach on my hair as a little girl.. but did get that Coconut oil on it first most of the time. now for me if I do use it it is not as much and I never had a problem with dandruff .. but i just use Shea Butter after a wash.. I have a few bald spots so my mind is not for all the things most people are talking about..Thank you for the beautiful article. stay safe and blessed..Smiles

  • Hi Linwood when i was younger my mom would shampoo my hair trowel dry and the grease my hair with dax grease the green one and straighting my hair with a hot comb omg the hot comb was burning my scalp now i hav 3 diff scalp conditions eczema atomic derm and seborrheic i do see a dermatologist offten because my scalp 🔥 and itches

  • Hi! What about the petrolatum based products that mix the good stuff in them? Aka the vitamin E, the coconut oil, etc. I try to tell my mom to use those products first and then the grease to lock it in but she insists an all in one works. She loves you so if you tell her otherwise, she will listen haha 😅

  • Hey there, 4c sufferer of seborrheic dermatitis. Visited a dermatologist that diagnosed this. Was given a steroid topical solution as well as a medicated shampoo. I stopped using it all because of how dry dry dry and brittle it made my hair. I’ve been natural heat treating my hair with a stylist for 2 years every two weeks. I’ve picked up some length but it will not retain, it breaks and can still be dry but not as dry as before. I’ve watched several YT influencers and you have been the 1st to say anything about 4c low porosity seborrheic dermatitis hair. I’m at my wits end, and am thinking of going back to my short hair style but I can’t because of the seborrheic dermatitis, getting a perm and having that condition is HELL! I’m sorry this is so long, I really just need your help. But thank you for this valuable info here 👏🏾🙏🏾

  • Good morning, my take away from this is too use a natural oil that will penetrate my hair and scalp for hair nutrient benefits and use the grease for sealing the hair. A clarifying and sulfate free shampoo are needed to properly cleanse hair. Good information, I enjoyed it, and I am glad you broke things down and gave more clarity and you manage to highlight benefits of using hair grease. Sometimes we just need to be re-taught on how to use our hair products. Blessings my Brother.😊🙏

  • The only oils I put on my scalp is hemp seed oil, and Jamaican black Castro oil. Sometimes my scalp get very flaming up and itchy, and when I put other oils on my scalp it get worse. Also if I put too much. What I do is mix hemp seed oil and Jamaican Castro oil, with drops of tea tree oil and peppermint oil, which helps keep it from itchy and flaming up.

  • Also, back in the day we all know that our relatives used grease and they all had healthy and long hair. Nowadays the natural community is going on and on about how grease is bad for your hair, when in the past when I wore my hair all greased up, it was the healthiest that it ever was. I think I just had issues with single strand knots or whatever. So, I’ve decided to go back to “old” hair practices because my hair isn’t thriving going about this the all natural route. I think a healthy mix of both types of products works best on my hair.

  • I have a question and I’m hoping you’re the right person to ask. I have seen “some” people make YouTube articles and say they have anywhere from 4Z to 5A type hair. And I’m always like “How many numbers and letters are out there?” Am I bugging or what? Seriously search 4Z and 5A on YouTube and see what you get. I thought hair textures went to 4C. If I’m wrong I’d rather hear it from a professional.

  • Omg yes! My mom used to tell me I have growing dandruff!!! I saw it for the first time this year! I do have eczema and I’m allergic to coconut oil and Shea butter…like to the point my scalp gets really itchy, red and burns. I usually make infused oil with hibiscus, lavender, peppermint, green tea, and tea tree oil and it soothes my scalp really well

  • It’s the yellow brick road! Lol Anyway I never knew grease wasn’t a moisturizer and was used more for a sealant! Ty! I just discovered you yesterday and I spent my whole day off literally binge perusal your hilarious and informative articles! God bless! Love and light and peace and healing power to all! 💖💋

  • This is precisely the reason why I stopped using it for hair and in my lip products/lotions. Nothing good truly comes from grease. I also have oily skin on the face so using grease does nothing for me as my hair is out often. Grease is a no go for me. It’s cheap and can cause problems with long term use.

  • I just don’t understand where ppl got the idea that grease was a moisturizer instead of a sealer. My g-ma (when she was alive) was a cosmetologist and used grease the right way. I always had long healthy hair. When I stopped sealing my hair and went to relaxers … that’s when the dryness and problems began. Now that I’m natural again trying to get my hair back healthy.

  • Hey Glamfam! Thank you for this because your article corresponds with what I thought all along. My mother always use hair grease on us as kids as a sealant. I too use it to seal moisture (water and leave in) into my daughter’s hair. For me, I retain length by putting it on the ends of my hair. I have an oily face, too. 😘

  • 😃” WELL SAID, MAN!…. So many generations grew up with that old school hair regime and, instinctively, ‘ reach for the grease ‘ assuming that worked best for us.🙄Back in the day, scores of us grew up with petroleum-based Afro Sheen and Ultra Sheen during the Soul Train era. Afterward, came the Jheri Curls rage ‘ moisturizing ‘ with greasy Curl Activators and sleeping with our heads covered with clear plastic bags. Decades later, Many of us are still paying for it going to dermatologists. Never mind that numerous black and white professional hairstylists have been telling our people to stop using grease on their hair and scalps. It just ‘ makes bad matters worse ‘ . Get rid of The Grease and Let it go! “

  • You are absolutely wonderful. I’m about to hit subscribe. I’m starting out my hair journey. My life has been a lie. My hair would have been down to my ankles if not for all the backward methods I’ve grown up with. I’m relaxed.Would oil be a better sealant for me? (because grease is rather heavy) P.S. you really are wonderful. that is my first impression of you.

  • Thank you for the true honesty! I had really thick hair up until 3 years ago, i was eating right, managing my health conditions as best I could & doing well. Now I’ve developed gastroparesis & I’m struggling to eat enough with food intolerances & other health conditions are worsening my hair has thinned & it falls out in full length strands, it doesn’t break, it feels like baby hair. I’m just wanting grease to be used as a good sealant so I don’t have to fuss with my hair for a week with it in braids, I’ve been following the curly girl method for years apart from when I had freeform dreads for 3 years. My body feels dehydrated constantly, I’m drinking almost 5 litres a day lol. Grease aint saving my hair. Health will.

  • Good morning Lin, I currently reside in Nolanville, Texas and I truly thank you for all of your posts and education regarding natural hair. I am a professional and I have been natural since 2010. I have educated my self though youtube posts since that time. I am going to Jamaica in a few weeks and I was wondering if you could recommend any products to make my hair more manageable? I am currently loving the Mielle line. I do not want to use a texturizer but I do feel like I need something to make “her” more manageable. I was told by my old boss First Lady Moton, that your shop was here in Harker Heights. Are you still there?

  • Yes, could you please do a article for those that have seborrheic dermatitis? You described two types of it. The first type my older sister has and the second type I have. I drink almost a gallon of water a day and eat mostly a plant based diet with fish/seafood on occasion. I’ve been doing that for 3 years. However, I’ve had the scalp issue since I was a child. My mom would grease my scalp but I don’t. I’ve tried oiling my scalp, but that just causes buildup on my scalp.

  • 💕💕Thanks for the article. Can you please do a article on common scalp conditions with solutions. We live in the midwest and I am not sure if we have dandruff or irritation from the dry winter air. It could even be from hair gel, which I don’t seem to be able to use at all. My scalp gets so irritated I have to wash my hair or scratch my hair out lol. I love you and your family. God blessed💕💕💕

  • Love you with endless interest and attention ❤️. I have an one issue with my hair. In the back bottom middle of my hair it will not stay moisturized. I know iron/vitamin deficiency could be at play but all my kids have the same spot of dryness. Plus I’ve tried every brand, mixture and type of castor oil and it Literally makes my hair shed like hay stacks. I don’t trust grease it clogs everything but I love natural oils.

  • Growing up my mom rarely if ever used petroleum based greases on my hair it was always Palmer’s Growth Treatment after blow drying it which is believe I cream based and my hair was very long and thick in its natural state. Now that I’ve gone natural again I don’t use grease at all and I only blow dry my hair if I’m getting a specific style, but I do have a container of Palmer’s that I was curious about using again.

  • What about a child’s hair? My 2nd daughter has hair that is between medium and coarse hair (biracial) and she has hair. for. days. She has twice as much hair as her sisters do to the point where it’s hard to get to her scalp. She has patches of eczema that come and go and dry scalp. Is that eczema too? Could you do a article on children’s scalp care? Thank you for this website!

  • My fifteen old son has dandruff and dry hair. His hair is similar to yours whereas yours may be 3b for example his would be 3c (just an example). I’ve been oiling his scalp with an oil blend and massaging it in after spritzing with water then following with a butter type cream. What should I use for his( dry-looking?) scalp if not oils? thank you!

  • Hi Glam Flam, hilarious but very interesting topic for me, don’t blame the grease enthusiaste blame their mama’s, mines is dead but i think she would be coming for you, how dare you say grease don’ t grow hair! haaahaaa the woman use to make a pot of grease with caster oil everytime school on vacation an just lather our hair, but still our picki hair could not comb in one all through our school life, wish she was around to watch you, cause everything you teach on hair makes good sense, keep up the good work, may God continue to bless you an your family.

  • Great info that I needed to know immediately. I am getting ready to take water aerobics to help lose some weight and strengthen my back and core. So now I know how to protect it better. Question.. does using hair products with collagen in it help make your hair healthier? Also my hair was thinning and someone suggested I take pre-natal vitamins . I find it ironic where my old azz go and ask for pre-natal vitamins while cashing my Social Security Check 😂😁😂🙃🤣🤣. ✌🏽&♥️

  • I’m very late on this article but I started using grease for my hair because I noticed oil made my hair itchy and dry. Grease is the only thing that helps me I know u said it’s not needed in the scalp but for me I use it on my scalp and it helps me from having an itchy scalp n.e way lol I was wondering what’s the best sulfate shampoo for type 4 hair ? 🙂

  • @GlamFam Hair and Beauty I have to ask for some clarification. My daughter has 4c, high porosity hair. When I used blue magic in the past her hair appeared to grow more and she was also wearing a lot of protective styles. Now that I am considering going back to hair grease can you clarify how/when to apply it? As I understand your article you apply it when the air is still wet to seal in the water. That being said is there an additional moisturizer needed to be applied to the hair or should be it coming from the conditioner? I look forward to your response and thank you for this article.

  • I am new to your website. I learned a lot from this article. I couldn’t find the product list recommendations. So my question would be what do you recommend other than water as a moisturizer? I have been thru a lot of products that my hair doesn’t like. Whenever I find a product I like it gets discontinued or hard to find. It has gotten to the point of making my own products my kitchen because I have sensitive skin/scalp. I am also thinking of going back to relaxers. (Mild of course) I just want to try something new/change after 10 plus years being natural. Also is there any suggestions on preventing/reducing split ends? I hate single stranded knots.

  • When I first went natural back in 2012, I used only petrolium jelly (vaseline) as a moisturizer; it was actually the only think I was using on my hair (I just could not figure out why my hair had issues). I then learned the LOC method and switched to BB Supergro as my sealant and saw a change immediately. I don’t think hair grease is the devil, but i do agree that it should be used as a sealant instead of a moisturizer.

  • I jumped on the oil bandwagon after I began relaxing my hair again. Especially the coconut oil train which is highly comedogenic. Then my skin started breaking out and it took me FOREVER to associate the breakouts with the oils. 🤦🏽‍♀️ When I was natural I did not use oils or greases. I went back to grease lately on my relaxed hair and the breakouts stopped! I still use oils but Grapeseed. Grease is a godsend on relaxer days as well to reduce run off and over processing. Grease has its benefits. Dont knock it till ya try it. As children I’m pretty sure some of us can recall having healthy long hair when our mother’s regimen on us was simply wash, condition, grease and braid!

  • I hope you can tell me what is going on. I have type 4b or c hair. I have not greased my scalp for many many years and there didn’t seem to be a downside to it until my hair stopped growing. I noticed that my hair began to look fluffy and over time realized my hair was old and not growing. Also I was taking meds for Multiple Sclerosis. After 14 years of meds I am off of them now. Still very very very slow growth. I started greasing my scalp again and my hair started growing again and as I keep getting it trimmed it is getting less and less fluffy. Is there anything I can do to get my hair to grow faster and to fill in some of the place that growth seems to be at a snails pace ???

  • You are FABULOUS 😍👍👍👍👍👍 I understood this very Well!!!! I was raised by and when Hair Grease, was Thee Only Thing Used by my Mother ❤🤩😄!!! I used to smell my hair get Fried Every weekend, LOL LOL LOL 😄🤗🤗🤗 Ears seared, neck grazed etc. LOL Anyway, Thank You Again my Knowledgeable Brother ❤ The last time I bought hair grease was because I thought my hair might need a little bit!! Oops, Not👍

  • I’ll add that there is no way your hair will grow if the rest of your body is lacking nutrients period. The hair, skin, and even distal extremities are the last thing the body cares about maintaining and giving blood flow. So if you’re missing essentials vitamins or minerals such as Iron(very common for menstruating women btw)the first place to suffer will be the hair and nails. The body will not waste already deficient nutrients on less vital organs/body parts like skin or extremities, let alone dead skin(hair and nails).

  • @GlamFam- Linwood, I know you have a beautiful wife but do you think she would allow us to clone you? Every woman needs a man like you. A man that understands that women should look beautiful and have wigs she can be proud of. A man that is willing to take the time and energy to restore wigs for his wife. You are truly a rare and priceless gem. Much love to you and your family!!😘🥰✌🏾

  • You’re comical . 😅 And I knew that the answer was mainly the massaging of the hair. A lot of people don’t realize that though. I used to get my hair greased all the time when I was a kid. But as an adult I realized one day that my hair doesn’t even need grease on it. I can go for days without grease. Grease weighs my fine, already super soft like cotton hair down. And my hair is pretty long, and it’s what’s called low porosity (I think that’s it lol). My hair drinks up water like crazy! In the shower I’m like, dam is it wet yet ???! 😄

  • Yes I was waiting for this article discutions I remeber Doctor OZ and the Doctors also Therealdaytimetv show I totally agree with you.I say do your research people who aren’t experts hair stylist should do a free hair consultation online to make sure before doing anything non experts are doing. First I want to wash my hair with some rice water, but I have black of understanding of which type of rice, I have lots of long grain brown rice in my home. Is that the best to do my hair with. Also just the plain rice is not enough. I need something else. Myhair is thin and short not neck length. So I keep braids in hoping it will make it strong. Notworking. I don’t live in an area where I can fresh air. I live in NEW YORK CITY.Just picture. Now that we are quarantine it is even harder for my hair. So Iputting water and oil.or nothing I am allergic to lot of things such as some vitamins one is Vita-E and lots of things have vitamin -E in it . I have tried dyed no good just caused breakage and dryness. I try to eat the right foods and drink more water..my skin is mirror clear. So why my hair is at a standstill. Oh mynail are very brittle.
