Do Disciples Of Mage Learn Spells?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers a variety of followers, including casters and mages. To teach new spells to a follower, you can use the Give Spell Tome option and the Teach spell option. However, the spell tome will be destroyed when the follower learns the spell.

Instead, you can teach a follower a new spell by equipping known spells and selecting the appropriate option from the magic menu. This allows you to view the learned spells by moving your in-game crosshair over a follower and going to the MCM.

On the PC version, you can teach followers new spells via console commands, but you need a hexcode for the spell you want to add. You can also give followers Staves, which can heal themselves by default. To change the class of a follower, you can use the combat section to change the class and then use spells teach to give the follower the spell you have equipped.

However, it is important to note that not all mage followers, except Virgil, can use magic. All mage followers won’t use magic, so it is essential to find a good mage as a follower. Some followers, such as college students, Talvas, and Marcurio, can be taught new spells by giving them the spell tome.

In conclusion, while there are many followers in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, mages are considered the best choice for those who want to learn new spells. However, it is not possible to teach followers new spells or have them forget them by giving them the spell tome again. It is crucial to find a good mage as a follower to enhance the game experience and improve the overall gameplay.

Can Lydia learn spells?

The author attempts to encourage readers to engage with the text and derive meaning from it, yet they do not provide any prompts or opportunities for independent learning. Lydia utilizes staves but does not engage in spell learning. She employs a dual-wielding strategy with the Fireball and Gyric Gundarsun’s staff, yet exhibits a lack of interest in the concept of followers. Bill Nye, a prominent figure in the field of science, has expressed frustration with the author’s actions and has made it clear that he is prepared to take a firm stance against anyone who challenges the status of Pluto as a planet.

Can followers use magic in Skyrim?

In Skyrim, you can teach followers spells, such as teaching Lydia to throw fireballs and put her healing hands on you by night. However, this method requires a certain level of skill and magicka to be used. The spell tome will vanish from your inventory, and your follower can choose to use it or not.

Lydia is a good example of a follower who joins you after completing a quest and journeys with you. She can smash faces with weapons and armor, but you want her to learn how to summon her own Atronach and heal herself to prevent being killed by Sabrecats.

To teach Lydia to learn the spell, drop the spell tome from your inventory, talk to your follower, and watch in disbelief as your next battle unfolds with your follower casting healing hands on the dragon you’re trying to kill. This method is a rumor and may not be successful in all cases.

Can followers run out of Magicka?

Mage or sorcerer companions can significantly impact battles with bosses like dragons, draugr, or Daedra. Mage companions are often preferred over melee companions due to their versatility and damage output. However, their usefulness decreases when they run out of Magicka. The College of Winterhold in Skyrim houses many powerful sorcerers, and completing quests within the fortress can earn the respect of fellow students. Three mages, including Brelyna, a Dunmer Mystic, specialize in Alteration, Illusion, Conjuration, and Sneak.

Brelyna can deal significant damage with spells and summon various Atronachs, but lacks health. She can also cast spells like Oakflesh and can see stealthed enemies that Skyrim’s Dragonborn may not. Each mage offers unique skills and abilities, making them valuable companions in battles.

Who is the tankiest follower in Skyrim?

Mjoll, an essential character in Skyrim, is a tank with high Heavy Armor and Two-Handed Weapon skills. She is not easily killed by normal means, making her useful in fights if equipped properly. However, she may try to equip One-Handed weapons instead of Two-Handed ones, even if the Two-Handed weapon has higher damage output. Players should avoid having Mjoll hang onto One-Handed weapons. The Khajiit mage from the College of Winterhold is a colorful character with a comical questline and memorable dialogue with the Dragonborn.

Can Serana learn spells?

Serana, a vampire thousands of years old, will gain access to an expanded repertoire of new spells, such as Healing, Oakflesh, and Flame Atronach, as she levels up. These spells are leveled, allowing her to access more powerful variants. Serana will also recognize a player’s name requested by Patrons, either automatically or manually, on PC or console, and call them by their custom name. This makes it seem like a vampire with thousands of years of experience can use more powerful spells.

Is Lydia a good wife in Skyrim?

Lydia, a Housecarl in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, can be a follower and married from the start. Players can choose from 20 unique spouses with personal quests and locations to find them. They can marry characters like Uthgerd, Ria, and Njada for different benefits. Marriage options range from housekeepers like Gilfre to battle companions like Aela.

Players may eventually want a permanent home and companion in Skyrim. By acquiring the Amulet of Mara, players can approach any character they’re interested in marrying, provided they complete personal quests and gain trust. However, finding the right person can be challenging due to the 65 different romance options.

There are numerous best wives in Skyrim, but players must learn how to unlock marriage options and find these prospects. Despite the lack of in-depth marriages, players will enjoy the role-playing opportunity in Skyrim.

Who is the best mage follower in Skyrim?

Brelyna Maryon from the College of Winterhold is a skilled mage who summons frost atronachs. She can learn a cheap dot that deals great damage for the cost and spams it often. Other mage followers include Onmund, J’zhargo, Marcurio, Illia of Darklight Tower, a priestess of Azura, and Neloth’s apprentice at Tel Mithyrn. If given enough staves, any follower can become a competent mage, even relying entirely on those staves.

Do wizards learn or prepare spells?

To prepare a list of wizard spells, choose a number equal to your Intelligence modifier and wizard level, with a minimum of one spell. The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For example, a 3rd-level wizard has four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots, while a 16-level wizard can have six 1st or 2nd-level spells. The 1st-level spell Magic Missile can be cast using either slot. Change your list of prepared spells after a long rest, but it requires at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.

  • She is pretty OP, one thing I don’t like about her is, say I fast travel to a town and a dragon shows up. Dragon lands and Illia throws a couple Ice Storms at it but in doing so she hits other NPC like guards or a shopkeeper. Then when the dragon is dead or during the dragon fight the guards or shopkeeper start attacking her. Yes, I’m one of those people that want to keep as many NPC’s alive as possible. She killed the blacksmith in Riverwood … I guess there is always ~resurrect~… Also I like playing a sneaky archer but her spells are so loud that she’ll agro every Falmer in a cave.

  • I have some comments about Illia. Her Frost Cloak spell is good but Ice Spear has a friendly fire problem. I learned from having Serana as a follower than she can accidentally hit you with Ice Spear and this causes you to temporarily move slower. Also, while Ice Storm is a powerful spell I have also fallen victim to its friendly fire with catastrophic results. I would also point out that the followers Belrand and Marcurio both use healing spells and Iron Flesh. If you can cope with Marcurio’s arrogance, I think you’ll find that he is the best mage follower. In addition to healing spells and Iron Flesh he uses Firball and Chainlightning, unfortunately these attacks can hurt you and potentially others but hey that’s magic. I have seen Marcurio and Seranna get into tons of fights when they both follow me and Marcurio always wins. Also besides his pride and delusions about not being a pack mule, I like his personality. Marcurio is a proud “apprenticed wizard” and shows interest in Dwemer culture as well as displays knowledge in ancient Nordic ruins. Just thought I’d throw in my opinion

  • The best follower all around is Teldryn Sero, he levels the highest, he is a spellsword, so immediately kicks ass (spellswords for some reason absolutely own in Skyrim when it’s just AI vs AI, like Miraak is a spellsword). With the added benefit that he has unique dialogue for everything from ancient ruins to farms. So he’s just got a lot of damage and charm.

  • man you deserve soo much more praise than your getting now. Whenever I want to know something about skyrim I come to your website. Your new style of commentary is great. Could you please to a build on the charater your using, that would be awesome. Keep up your great work and you’ll do great on YouTube

  • I was wondering why J’zargo used Sparks so much :/ Sigh… Glitches. I’ve seen him use lightning bolt (or chain lightning?) occasionally, as well as wards, but he does do low damage. Persistent tho. (Plus I like his character but shh) Anyway, I had found this place randomly before, and it was fun to clear, but I didn’t know she was one of the best. Awesome article. I should probably go and get her and change J’zargo for her

  • I’ve had some really good luck with Valdimar (house carl for the house you get in Morthal). He’s more of a warrior but he knows how to cast healing spells, an alteration spell, and destruction spells like ice and I think fire. More ice though. A lot tougher than Lydia though and deadlier. Then again…a skeever is tougher than Lydia most days. I can NEVER get the bastard to shoot a bow though! ><

  • If you have the Dead Thrall spell, there’s a Forsworn Ravager chick who is a pretty good ice mage. She’s at the Forsworn camp below the Blades’ temple. She rapid fires ice spears and summons a Frost Atronach. She also uses some sort of skin spell for defense that acts as an early warning because it makes a loud “Sssshank” metalic noise when it’s cast. I discovered her abilities on accident because I used to “twice bake” dead enemies. That is to say, after a battle was done, I’d strip the dead of armor and weapons, reanimate them and kill them again using my weak skills thus building them up. I brought her back and when I tried to re-kill her she wasted me with 3 ice spears before I could say “WTF”.

  • yeah I just got her and went with stormbros into the tomb to get the thingy-crown for Ulfric and as long as I could kill all the enemies with bow BEFORE she and rest of the crowd started to fight it was OK. But when they started to brawl… she was just destroying EVERYONE- foes AND friends (damn the AOE spells). Then the ones that survived went for her life lol. At least she didn’t die.

  • Have you checked out Arena yet? if so who would you consider better? Arena maxes out at lv 30 but has the expert spells Thunderbolt and Icy Spear and can conjure Fire and Frost Atronarchs. She also has the Augmented frost and shock for enhanced damage. Illia maxes at 40 but she uses the frost spell Icy spear. An element that most people in skyrim are resistant against with no summons. I always forgo the black star for Arena. She’s insane once she starts using ice storm and is still very viable for me late game since I’m the one going in. Using her and a Reikling warrior equipped with a dragon bow has been my favorite early game set up. Arena will use a frost Atronarch while she and my Reikling warrior deal with tougher enemies.

  • I played Skyrim and went straight for the 500 gold to get Marcurio. I’m now leveling almost topping level 30 and he is still there. I find him the most interesting with his lines and powerfull lightning spells. He saved my ass everytime and I will not lose this guy. Eveey character since Skyrim I played with I always found him the most fun,

  • I messed everything up. I jumped up the mountain then went down from the top. I hit a blocked door and she was on the other side. I talked to her and she was like “here’s the plan” and I was like “what the fuck” so I decided to leave since there was nothing I could do anyway. Then I went to the bottom and went up and totally missed out on her killing that lady at the bottom. In fact she wasn’t even there. I got to where she was near the top and again she was like “here’s the plan” it’s so weird. I completely broke it. Since I went down instead of up I killed her mom or whatever too soon. When we got to the top there was nothing to do. Nobody was there and she just stood there saying “good morning”

  • Know what’s the greatest combo do the resto loop about for 2 hours then pimp out any armor you want make another set fine it until you can’t no more and just give it to some random companion although they won’t level with you that much but they will literally have 2000000 resistance to anything you want or damage

  • I like Serana the best. She has several types of magic along with wielding a one-handed weapon. Also if you are a vampire you can ask her to make corrupted sun-hallowed arrows that can be used to blot out the sun for one in-game day. Good for a fight during the day or for just freaking out the villagers.

  • I don’t use ice mage followers anymore (especially the more powerful ones) for two reasons. 1. On lower difficulty settings like adept and expert, you never get to kill anything yourself, which is half the fun. 2. On higher difficulties like master and legendary, you don’t have to worry about reason number 1 but they almost always kill your character via friendly fire, way before they kill the enemy. I guess I could use a mod to disable follower damage, but it seems pointless. I prefer Electro-mages anyway.

  • im kinda new to skyrim and i really need some expert advice. i play as a sneaky character and occasionally pull out my magic and one handed weapons when i really have to. but im really stuck when it comes to my armour. i want light armour, but i really want daedric armour too. is it okay if i use a full dragonSCALE armour with daedric helmet and daedric gauntlets? will it affect the light armour “sneaky-ness” i dont mind about the leveling i just want to know if having 2 pieces of daedric will make my entire light armoud useless? also i want to know which 2 1 handed weapons i should use? i like daggers and swords, i dont know what i want to get like either chilrend of blade of woeor daedric dagger/sword or the mehrunes razor? i really dont know, so please from experience which 2 weaons should i use together? and which enchantments on it. plz help 😀

  • I am not sure why I have never ran across this article before. I absolutely love Illia and go to great lengths to get her early or get her back when her bug causes her to leave your service. As of now I have not found anything that alleviates that issue. Even on the XBONE – SE, unfortunately. Once, I turned to see her fighting my horse and it was at that moment I knew I truly loved her.

  • It’s been a while, but isn’t there kind of a rather major bug with Ilia, that makes it so if you ever dismiss her, or she gets dismissed because a quest follower joins you, you can never recruit her again? Did they patch that in the Remastered version? If they did, I’ll probably use her quite a bit, as I rather like her. But the closest thing to a work around I ever found was sign her up for the Blades, and even then, she only follows you when you get a dragon slaying mission from them.

  • With a mod like Amazing Follower Tweaks you can turn any follower into the best mage follower. Among other things, they’ll have no level cap anymore and you can change their combat style, allocate points to their stats and skills when they level up (if you want to really customize them), as well as teach them new spells.

  • I heard that one of the risks of having Illia as a follower is that, at higher levels, she begins to make frequent use of Ice Storm, which can cause problems if you’re a melee character. Also, her level cap is 40, which isn’t as high as any of the housecarls. However, I agree that she’s better than J’zargo, especially if you have the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, which caps him at level 30.

  • Rest in peace Illia……..however you spill that. Serena was with me when we explored this ruin and the two of them got into a fight. Only one left. Chuckle. Serena is bad news………..I enchanted her a ring, necklace and circlet with extra magika and health……….yep she is bad news. Lol! Serena is the best sneak follower also, she will behave very well until I make the first move……..then is is total chaos. Grin!! Yea that cat is worthless. Cannot defeat a wet mouse. Runs about tossing sparks, I guess he never got his fire spells fixed and they still damage those who use them so he retired them. Serena is the best, and she is also cute!! Never gets mad at you, and is always looking for a fight. But can and will behave during a sneak attack until you make the first break out of sneak. Then all bets are off. She will clear them out. Grin! Long live Serena!!!!

  • Get to portal of sovngarde you get best staff then you have to get rid off it to get to sovngarde RIP skyrim…you had to kill of…god damit it was on A from brootherhood.(also best follower is fae…WHAT ARE YOU IN HEAVENS DOING I TOLD YOU TO USE STEALTH GOD DAMIT I GAVE YOU FUCKING NIGHTBLADE ARMOR AND THIS IS HOW YOU REPAY)

  • So being the best mage follower, she’s better than Marcurio.. I find Marcurio interesting ’cause he’s the kind that adapts against the enemies’ he is facing, kind of smart mage.. Does Illia adapts too? Will she use a fire spell against a troll or frost troll? I’m sorry but I’m a little outdated in xD Skyrim and decided just lately to get back on playing because of the Legendary Patch.. And I don’t know her until I saw your website.. :DD

  • Off topic here, I just have to mention your sneak must be maxed. you nearly snuck right by the first witch after you came up the stairs and killed the troll! I need to invest in sneak too. As a mage only player (with occasional archery) my light armor gives me little armor bonus lest i use oakflesh. so sneaking might be a good option!

  • In the description: “PLEASE READ Tip: If you have Serena as your current Mage follower their is a bug you can do which allows you to have two humanoid followers!” I have Serena as a follower but want to have Illia too. How? Which bug is he talking about? Can someone send me a link to a tutorial or something? :/

  • Thank you so much!! She is very helpful and I needed her badly. After doing the quest for, well, light was involved in a cave, and the objective was for you to get the light throughout the cave and kill the mortal there. I killed the mortal, but in the process, Lydia died. So I want to thank you for this article! This was very helpful

  • I use my followers to help me collect souls to fill my gems.I give them bows with soul trap and lots of empty soul gems. They work quite well actually 🙂 . Can someone suggest me a follower that can do this job nicely / the best follower to collect souls ? Maybe the’re all the same ( except mages,i’m pretty sure they cannot trap souls since they dont use weapons and cant use soul trap).

  • QUESTION! So Ive read that if you already have Serana as a following and ask for Ilia to be your follower you can have them both. Illia is already my companion, so I was wondering if I were to recruit Serana it would still be possible to get two followers. Is it true? Or it must be the other way around?

  • Have to say Serana is better simply because she 100% can’t be killed by accident or on purpose. Also I tend to think her A.I. is just a little better combat and path tracking wise. Or maybe it’s just her immersiveness when interacting with the environment. Anyway, she uses whatever you give her (according to the rules of highest damage of course… But switches between spells and even archery if she’s out of mana), doesn’t care who you kill or what you steal. Really the best. If you don’t do DLCs though, get Derkeethus and give him a bunch of staves. We all know nobody actually takes time to go through their inventory just to pick out a staff and use it. It’s magic, bow, or melee (not always in that order of course). Derk will use anything. I even give him my unique staves (except the eye of magnus, because there is no point for him.) and he uses them all appropriately. Just make sure you check their charge when you notice he hasn’t used them in a fight or two. It’s really no more inconvenient than doing it for yourself. In all ways except the A.I. thing and being almost as hot, he’s the same as Serana. Will. Not. Die. Loyal through good and bad. Minor Spoiler/Potential game breaker below: Also you could do the Derk method with Cicero. And there is a glitch/exploit way to get them all three to follow you at once. Just have to be fast with that follow request. Sure narrow halls get cluttered, but what’s cooler than seeing your three invincible followers run circles around a terrified Ancient or Legendary dragon on Legendary?

  • Illai is not the best mage. Even with magica boosts she runs out of magicka super quickly, she randomly priorities her bow over spell at times and she very rarely uses the expert ice spell. Not to mention the bugs with her, the fact you have to put a headpiece of some kind on her to stop her wearing her default robes and her dumb AI… I’d honestly pick Marcurio and maybe even Serana over illai.
