Feelings of physical or mental discomfort after an energy healing usually last for a few days, although it can sometimes take several weeks. Repressed rage is the root of all disharmonies in the mind-body, causing a blockage of Qi and blood flow, which can lead to congestion. Stretching your back muscles can exacerbate the problem and, if done incorrectly, could lead to severe disc compression.

  • Amanda is a wonderful contributor to your GRA group and her recovery has inspired me. I love the program and am so grateful God lead me to it. I meditate daily as a part of my religion. Focusing on Jesus while praying the Rosary actually takes my mind off any discomfort I may be feeling and because my meditation isn’t about me, I can relax into it. Wonderful article, thank you Dr Charlie!

  • Meditation definitely screwed me up when I started. I was confronted with all those thoughts I was trying to get away from or I didn’t know I had. But eventually meditation helped me to look at them from a different point of view which allowed me to work with them instead of run away from them. Meditation is an amazing tool if you’re willing to go all the way.

  • I’m not a guru but I did meditate consistently. In the beginning it was energizing and brought me peace. But then a deep depression like state came over me. I know it wasn’t some onset of mental illness or something like that. Its the releasing of some deep negative emotions trapped in my body and mind. Be aware of what it is. I was confused and it was very uncomfortable experience and I had to understand what happened before I got out of that state. Also please understand what kind of meditation you are doing. Meditation is so deep – its not a mental practice alone, it affects your energy in your body. As a funny example, I started doing this meditation focusing on being nothing – it was so wonderful in the beginning. I let go of my identity and worries and attachments and honestly felt so light and free immediately after. I continued with it and then started feeling like I was nothing 😅 – it felt bad because your mind clings onto an identity and losing it is painful. I started feeling depressed. The meditation is not bad but please understand what you are doing first because you are going to bring about a change. I manifested feeling empty by focusing on being nothing. I wasn’t ready for that nor did I appreciate what constantly being nothing would mean – our minds usually will move from one thing to another to bring about change but when you let go of certain parts of your identity, its going to be uncomfortable. Just be aware of it. Its not good or bad but I thought I’d share my experience because I always thought meditation was for good feelings.

  • After many years of happy meditation, I went very deep, it brought up my forgotten fears and repressed thoughts. Horrible, horrible, uncontrollable. It was very powerful, overwhelming, making me feel defeated, depressed, weak, helpless, changing my facial expression, body language and behaviour. May be it is released as a toxic chemical in the blood stream, reaching our brains.

  • Thank you for talking about this….. even though now I understand what was going on with me when I first started meditating just hear you as a teacher mention this really helped relax something inside that was causing some disturbance in my mind and affected my meditation. Also your speaking about your anxiety and how it disturbed your mind really helped so much in bring understanding to some of what I was going through when I was first starting out learning about meditation. This was many, many years ago. When I first started meditation, my reason was I wanted to be a “better person”. I had very low self esteem. What happened was I felt worse and experienced extreme anxiety about it. I stayed with it but it was difficult. Now my understanding has matured. I appreciate your authenticity and honesty. Thank you 🙏

  • Thank you Rimpoche! This has happened to me. I have been doing meditation for a couple of years, and at some point I started feeling more irritated after the sessions, quite unpleasant. During meditation was fine, calm and quite but I feel like it was not doing good to me. Long story short, after stopping for some time I’ve resumed it, but not every day. I am still quite concerned that this bad sensation would start all over.

  • So nice of Rinpoche to tell us of his personal experience, positive and negative. Negative experiences have been almost a taboo subject in some traditions. Also, meditation is only part of the Eightfold Way, it is not the be all and end all of practice. Right View is as important, imho, and faith as well.

  • I have had similar issues with meditation releasing repressed negative emotions and thought patterns. The solution that works for me is walking alone in the hills with my dogs. Periods of solitude in nature allow perspective to be regained. It is something that is impossible to put into words. We are all different and maybe have different paths to follow but meditative exercise and nature have been transforming for me.

  • I was diagnosed with PTSD. When I started meditating three or four years ago my mind messed me up. But over time it is slowly getting better. I can tell a difference. But it is slow going so in my case I have to be patient. Your teaching and wisdom help me to meditate. Thank you for sharing your insight. 😊

  • When I meditated for the first time It felt great n I could sleep well and for the first time my anxiety seemed alleviated. But after a day or two my heart started pounding n would do so all day. The palpitations seemed to have increased since I started n that has made me associate meditation with fear This, (also the fact that so many relate) however, gives me so much comfort n renews my commitment !

  • Would you be able to discuss the topic of overcoming fear of meditation? I’ve recently been interested in practicing it in order to improve my mental health and well-being, but find it difficult due to frightening intrusive thoughts that I have. I was also raised to believe that meditation is wrong which doesn’t help either. It would be wonderful for you to consider!

  • I’ve meditated every single day for past ten years yes roller coaster of emotions all that later now something even more bizarre is happening. I don’t feel anything no emotions n I’m so used to feeling so much. Now now I’m empty there’s a void n it’s not the void that meditation gives it’s just hollow . Please help

  • I’ve been meditating in short sessions through calm app and mind valley. Just recently I’ve started joe Dispenza’s week 1 Alpha meditation for 30 minutes, the first session it was amazing I felt so energetic and happy the second was the same experience by the 3rd I felt heavy pressure on the forehead and unable to physically relaxe it and nausea that went away after the session. Today was the 4th session and it was the same experience as the 3rd with way more intensity and I still have a headache. Have anyone here experience this?

  • Thank you! Thank you so much for this! I totally needed this today… During my today’s meditation my mind was racing with millions of thoughts and I felt so worse like I had failed because earlier that particular meditation had made me calm. I felt like I am doing it completely wrong if my mind is still not calm and I became very upset. And I saw your article and now feel better. I just need to trust the process and be compassionate with myself. Thank you again for making me feel better!🤗🙏🏼🧿

  • Psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk says that although trauma victims can benefit from meditation, they often find it difficult early in recovery. He suggests beginning with simple relaxation methods. In the West, there is criticism of meditation retreats in which people are told to continue with meditation despite adverse effects. The study of meditation research conducted by the Melbourne Mindfulness Interest Group says that this does not follow Buddhist tradition, which allows people to rest when adverse effects arise.

  • I feel good to be here ! On that place of Youtube, right now 🌟 What if one day or one night could i remind what is “good food” back to mind ; and what is not and the shade behind ; and thus thanks to this wisdom ; ⚡ I make the daily effort and commitment supported by teaching and the practice of meditation ; that walks with much difficulty but naturally towards one firmly goal less suffering for U & I.

  • Hello, thanks for great teaching, saying it’s a good sign is an interesting positive view point,… a question, the full lotus meditation and half lotus meditation, are they both recommended and taught by Buddha? Is it important to reach to full lotus, my idea is that full is more making balanced body but so hard for me and some people rather than half. Another question, is Bodhisattva means female Buddha?

  • .I love your articles. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was ‘Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed’. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to ‘BHIKHAINI’ Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to ‘BURHA’ Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba ‘DABESHWAR NATH’ meaning the man who won the pressurizing game.

  • It’s more than a year now that I have meditated at least avging 45min per day and some days even total of 3 hours a day. It has been so blissful that certain minor illnesses like hyperacidity, mild cold n cough, minor muscle spasms or pain are cured fully. It makes me sleep like a baby or a dead man..I call it single position sleep. 6hrs of Peaceful sleep. People complain about nightmares. Well! Most times we get a Peaceful sleep bcoz of meditation. But, sometimes it depends upon our mind states like conscious, sub conscious. The thoughts we have. On a rare occasion, we may have a night mare or two. Nevertheless, by continuous meditation, our mind becomes super strong to confront many challenges, nightmare is like a little mouse.

  • I been regularly meditating. Mindful breathing with Sam Harris on his app waking up. Today I felt like I was having a heart attack or stroke. I called the ambulance and they said I was ok. I felt better but woozy and almost like a psychedelic trip was happening… all day. I have no one to talk to. So many questions and I think meditation caused my distress. Solution?

  • I’d like to start with recognising that meditation can and has helped a lot of people. I’m just sharing my experiences with it. I must wonder, what do I do when my mind goes into things beyond humans? Beyond daily chores or even life goals? Beyond humanity? Beyond reason, logic and rationality? When my mind presents me with concepts and ideas on the level of cosmic horror and accepts the concepts as possible or even probable? I know I suppress my dreams due to the traumatising nature of what they often are, I know the nature because of what little I remember, it is always surreal, anti-rational and cosmic horror imagery and thoughts. Last I remember meditating I suffered increased paranoia for a good week. I wish one day for this not to be the case but my mental health since hasn’t improved and until it does I’m not risking it.

  • This is a great point, and I love that you brought it up. I’ve been trying to learn Zazen for about half a year, and it has been such an up-and-down experience. I tend to be a very anxious over-thinker at the best of times, and meditation really caused that to overwhelm me at first as I was made aware of just how turbulent my mind could be. Sometimes things would be calm, other times I could try practicing for a week and never feel comfortable. It’s only when getting more instruction that I’ve come to realize that it is okay to feel some of that turbulence and to just watch the thoughts as they happen, impartially.

  • I personally have come to the realization that no matter how you cope with reality: rather it be meditation or booze: you’re still coping and trying to change your feelings… And thus; there’s no real significant difference. No matter what conclusion you establish for yourself- it’s still delusional. Purity is merely a concept. Everything is subjective. My brain chemistry can’t simply be redistributed from thought alone: thus a great deal of suffering will come from this illusion of meditation. Meditation is an impossible solution to a seeker of truth. Everything we experience dies every moment. We are living and dying with ever nano second of existence. You know death already: that’s why you obsess with it: and to feel nothing- and to believe nothing: and to grasp the truth- is to realize that you’re the Master of “your” reality. When you get to this point: do your best to stay humble.

  • Rinpoche, on physical aspect of mind meditation of awareness technically is good to use for spirituality by just be still quiet to be in Holy Presence of Lord God Jesus Christ our salvation for those who believe, the ultimate source of energy, healing, blessing, breath of life The Great I Am please try reading Holy Bible The only way truth and life

  • Thank you rinpoche la for this beautifully explained article about meditation.. i did Samatha mediation for a week then started collaborating it with yoga. A meditation music playing in the background and focusing on the present doing yoga makes me feel so alive, so fresh and at peace mentally and physically.🙏
