I just picked up a Street Chrome Zippo at Wal-Mart a couple hours ago for about $11 USD. They had some there that were the exact same lighter but with the sticker added and they were like $17. I know from experience that stickers don’t last long so I got the plain one. I LOVE the look and feel of this thing. It’s duller and darker than a high polish chrome and has a really slight texture which is great for me because it gives a little grip. I’m one of those annoying cats who’s trickin’ and dickn’ with the thing all day lol. I put my Zippo brand yellow flame butane insert in there and it gives a great weight to it. This one looks and feels like it’s been bouncing around in my pocket with my knife and coins for a decade or so already. Love it. Thanks for your articles Mike. I’m really digging em. My question is whether a plain brass or chrome lighter is actually made from solid brass, or if they’re made from a cheaper metal and then plated accordingly? I’d like to thing the cases are made of solid brass and then plated accordingly. If that’s the case, is there a difference in the Walmart blister-pack version and the nicer boxed version? Im not sure if this has been said in this comment section . But if its a myth, man was the zippo I stole in walmart underwhelming lol. It is a regular brush bronzed. But it is my first and it did not feel as i expected it too. Feels like it is made half tin half plastic. I expected it to feel heavy and hard like a gun LOL.
Something I found interesting, I have about a dozen zippo lighters. Out of the dozen, 2 came from Walmart. They look, feel, and function just like any other Zippo that I have or have had basically. The 2 I got from Walmart are a Street chrome and a matte black. I was doing all kinds of different stuff to my Zippos one day because I thought my Glow in the dark might be fake. I was comparing literally everything, using my calipers to measure dimensions, and so on. I even went as far as to use a magnet on various parts just because. That is when I noticed something quite strange. Both of the Zippos I got from Walmart (the black more so than the chrome) have very slightly magnetic cases. I’m not saying you can sick a magnet to the side or anything as the pull isn’t very strong. However, if you pull the insert out of the case and hold the case open, you can start to pull the lid up with a magnet. The black one will pull almost closed just with magnetic pull. The chrome one will pull up slightly then the weight of the lid breaks the pull. These are the only 2 lighters in my small zippo collection that have any kind of magnetic pull what so ever. I am curious if anyone else with Walmart Zippos has the same effect. They seem built to the same quality but is the brass used in the case perhaps a different grade? Either way, my Black one is L 14 marked and it has been in steady use since I bought it almost a decade ago. It’s still works like it did the day I bought it. I have no complaints at all with it.
perhaps the different is the packing only, a box is probably partly manual assembly, while blister is full automated, and while putting the zippo in the box there is a guy who probably work as QC looking if there is a scratch or some other defect, while on blister everything goes in, its the buyer’s job to eyeball and see if that particular piece has a defect or not, just pick another one that looks better if so.

Precisely by putting the same product with minimum or no variations in different boxes with even different brands is how companies create the ilusión of choice and consumer believe they are buying different products while they are buying the same. When my dad had my grandads zippo in the 80s at that time all they had at the store was rononol fuel and flints so he bought literally a whole cardboard box full of Robson flints cause by the 90s early 2000s zippo bought Robson and all the old stuff became even cheaper at least in my area of the NC mountains

Good information! The fact that Zippo confirmed the difference is all the proof I need since Zippo owns both companies. Your observation that the the Zippo fluid seems to go faster in your lighter is because Zippo’s refining removed more of the heavier hydrocarbons. I suspect there will be less buildup on the wick with the Zippo fluid.
I’ve never really used Ronsonol so I can’t say if what he says about the two fluids is true but I can say absolutely 💯 that cheap flights or flints from a Bic not only do they not harm your lighter they work fantastically! Almost all my Zippos light on the first strike! If it functions perfectly and it doesn’t harm your lighter there’s nothing wrong with them! I’ve gotten play Zippo Flint’s once or twice in my life and it’s just not worth it! Zippos are fantastic and they don’t need Zippo Flint to remain so. Anybody can try it I promise it’s not going to hurt her lighter. Anyways most likely the only difference is the paint on the outside of the Flint they put their to prevent oxidation

I don’t really see any difference between Ronsonol or Zippo lighter fluid, Zippo is the better deal in US Amazon as it is just $1.97. However, butane brands are certainly something to be concerned about. Because some brands like Neon 7x just spill if the adapters don’t fit, but Zippo and King butane are alright for most Zippo butane inserts.

I have used an even cheaper lighter fluid because it was the only one I could find in my area, what I noticed is that it evaporates much faster and the smell was much stronger. But other than that it worked fine. Zippo is way better but if you can’t find it you can make do with any lighter fluid . Just refill it every 3 or 4 days and you’ll be fine.
Hello, I started being a Zippo user only this year and I was about to order a new can of Zippo lighter fluid, and I saw black can with Zippo lighter fluid also stating “low odor”, or “less odor”, and I was wondering if the first one I got actually has a stronger odor, or if they just changed their recipe, started printing it on the cans to show people it has less odor now, and then they stopped printing it on the cans. Your facts are probably correct. Certainly plausible, especially what you said about a more refined fluid. But better is subjective and a preference. I ran across this article looking for Ronson fluid. The reason I prefer Ronson is that it lasts longer in my lighter. This somewhat substantiates your statement about higher refinement. It is more volatile. This characteristic also makes it evaporate more readily. And yes, it will also light easier. So what? Ronson always lights too. So better to me is that Ronson lasts longer before needing a refill.
I bought a 5 oz bottle of the Ronsonal just 2 days ago at a gas station. It was $2.99. It was the only kind they had. I’m not a smoker, but I wanted to try out a Reliance lighter (very similar in style to a Zippo) that was my Grandfather’s. As far as I know he never smoked regularly either so it wasn’t used very much. It works fine with the Ronsonal fuel, but I don’t use it for smoking. More of a curiosity really. I’ll probably take it camping with me.
Well I just added a very small amount of Rosonol liquid lighter fluid into my Eagle Mini Torch . I suddenly stopped when nothing happened as I pressed my red lit button on the torch and I’m now here on YouTube looking for answers. Hope it’s perfectly okay to add the proper butane gas from an aerosol type can into my mini torch to continue topping it off. I’m hoping the butane cold gas liquid stuff, even when mixed with a little Rosonol, will not turn my Eagle Mini Torch into a grenade bomb. Any thoughts? That’s true the zippo fluid isn’t as noticeable in smell however both a 12fl oz of Ronson and a 12 fl oz of zippo fuel costs 4$ where I’m at so I just get the zippo better fluid for the same price the tobbacco store thinks sense zippo owns Ronson they can meet halfway in the middle for both prices of fluid and just charge 4$ .
I have always been told to not use a zippo to light a cigar because of the taste of the naptha. Now you can buy straight naptha by the gallon i wonder how that works. I might do a taste test with both on a cigar. Just lit one with ronson. I cant taste it. However i smoke a lot so that might be why. Zippo fluid is harder to get in my area.
I don’t believe for one second you verified jack squat as Ronsonol is made at the same plant in Brandford, PA (The old Ronsonol that actually did smell different was made in New Jersey). They are now and have been IDENTICAL for some time. I’ve got both here right now. They both say MADE IN BRADFORD, PA on them. They both smell the same. They both light the same. There is ZERO difference in the production. The ONLY difference between the two is the Zippo fluid is poured into a metal can instead and sells for significantly more money to sell to SUCKERS that are fanatical about the Zippo brand (real Ronson fans by comparison collect VINTAGE Ronson lighters, not Zippo made crap made under the once great Ronson name).
