I have an omen 16 with amd components. It has 16gb of ddr5 ram, 144 hz refresh rate screen, and 1 tb of storage. Forgot what the specific cpu and gpu are but they’re ok. All my friends have desktops and I can still play rainbow, forza, black ops3, and other games with them with no problems. I try and stay away from newer cod games cuz my fans are maxed out at all times when playing.
See I tried at least five “gaming laptops” and ended up returning them all because sure they are great for like the first five minutes but then they start heating up like crazy taking out the lap part of the name. And then of course they start going downhill on performance as they warm up. I even tried some nice underneath fans for them and using the keyboard I would feel like I’m touching almost. I will stick with my desktops.
I purchased a brand new HP Omen 45L from the HP website and they sent me a USED COMPUTER. They then proceeded to delay and refuse an exchange over and over again. I have the 15 inch version and it’s a great laptop. A little flex in the screen and the cord in the back tends to fall out but other than that I haven’t found any other issues. I may just have a bad plug. I have the i9 with a RTX 4070 and 32 gig of ram. I now wonder if that HyperX headphone will work with mine because I hate dongles. Anyone know?
This is just an ad for a product you can’t purchase. It’s sold out on their website and the white one I can’t find anywhere. This was a consideration for my next laptop but based on this I’m gonna go with the zephyrus. Also Austin it really sucks how you make just blatant ads for companies. I got the Lenovo Legion pro 7i that came out last year. 150-175 watts on the RTX 4080 with dynamic boost, 13th Gen i9 HX, 240 hz, 32gb ram… thing is a beast. Build quality is awesome, love the typing experience. I travel to a new city every 2 weeks or so with my job so I needed something semi-tanky. I create music with FL studio, Edit article with Sony Vegas, Play games like Valorant/Overwatch, Elden Ring, Witcher, and Modded Skyrim. Researched for 2 months to make the right choice and after a year+ of use, I’m still in love.

All I want is a good compact device. That is light but also have a good gaming performance. I really need that 14 inch so it’s portable, for work and education, while also be a good companion for gaming. All I have found so far is the razer blade 14. Which is expensive or the ASUS G14 which money wise seem like the better option
The copilot button in the keyboards of the DELL machines is hilarious. It’s probably re-mappable to something useful, like right Control, but as-is it looks hilarious. Similarly the top shine-through touch bar seem very awkward and resembles what I’ve seen on some Core 2 Duo laptops. But the selection of keys seems genuinely useful, so by adding stickers to it and the hidden trackpad to make them findable by feel, it can be made decent. Not that that should be necessary on such a premium device, but it is designed for form rather than function so it is what it is.
You neglected to mention that Dell have a major problem with the LCD breaking due to the strain on the hinge. I’ve had several Dell machines in for repair this year with the same problem, left hand edge of the screen breaks because of the stress put on it by the hinge, and they are stupid expensive to repair because of the screen, digitiser, rear case, hinges and so on that need to be replaced. They will break again because it’s a major design flaw so be warned.
My laptop draws about 140-150W just on the GPU and the i9 sucks up a ton more. I’m more than happy with my Acer Predator which was bought when it was on offer for about GB£1200, the CPU is 11th gen but that doesn’t worry me at all. I’m quite happy buying a generation or 2 behind brand new laptops as it means I pay half the price of brand new current gen devices. A 17″ 144Hz screen is great for gaming at 1080p, pixel response time is fine, keyboard is fine, storage is barely adequate but an upgrade solved that problem and the 16GB of RAM it ships with needs an upgrade to 32GB but apart from that it was a good laptop for a great price.
M1 iPad pro is going to be scrapped in warranty repairs giving me refunds, and I´m pondering should I get a semi current gaming laptop (like the Flow X16) or wait for the 12,9″ M3 iPad Pro… I game and I draw, but most over all I consume media in my hectic dad life… I have the first gen(?) Zephyrus G14 and XB series X and 2016 MBP Touch. What would you get, basically Flow X16 or similar vs the newest biggest IPP?
There is something worth to mention, I bought Asus Zephyrus 2022 and a Lenovo legion 5 for one of my friends, there is a huge glare and reflection problem with Zephyrus line of Asus specially 15 inch model and in your article its also obvious that they have that reflection too, but it’s not something you see in Lenovo laptops at least this much
Guys from my around 10 yrs of gaming on a laptop I highly recommend to just build a PC instead, if you need a heavy lifting laptop just get a non-gaming laptop like a dell xps or macbook pro if you can afford it with nice cpu and high ram. Just wait till you can build a PC to game, its really not worth the effort and money to buy a gaming laptop (it brings many many issues that i don’t care enough to write out here). good luck in any case.

I feel like I’ve been going insane with all reviews, marketing, and discourse around the Ultra series chips and saying how much more powerful they are compared to the 14th Gen I series. Completely agree about the Alienware M16 R2, I have an R1 and when the R2 was announced I was quite disappointed. It’s a massive downgrade and doesn’t make sense in their lineup as the X series already covers the ‘small, mid-high range’ segment.
great stuff dave, I love how you explain very clearly the differences between cpu stacks ( higher power consumption vs lower power consumption) i’ was a bit concerned at the start of the article when you showed all those laptops stacked on top of each other… doesn’t that hurt the laptop at the bottom? just curious. Although I like the new design and look of asus’s new g14, I kinda prefer the old design better… idk call me crazy, the lift screen hinge that helped with cooling, the higher gpu options, and the overall look of it, it was a bit thicker, and I feel could handle temps better. plus the materials weren’t bad either, it still feels solidly built made of magnesium allow, with full glass touchpad, and mini led screens.
Are those Ultra chips given anough performance for productivity? What I meant is, I have a latitude product. Great battery life sucks performing(it has an I7 processor but from the U line, as it is a 14″ inch laptop). Would I have a good battery life and good performance on programming and virtualization using an Intel Ultra with a RTX?
I have the ROG Zephyrus G16 RTX 4090, but there are a couple of issues with the screen that are not really mentioned in any reviews. 1) The screen brightness doesn’t go that low, so using it in the dark can be jarring (e.g., I like to do some coding while perusal a movie). 2) The mura effect when brightness is low is very very prominent on dark grey. Because of that, I basically don’t use dark mode. 3) At low brightness, when a dark grey colour is shown on the screen (e.g., dark mode Google search page). You’ll notice “screen flashes” (it’s a very small but noticeable effect). I’m not sure whether it’s due to PWM (no DC dimming on brightness below 60%) or whether I have a defective product.
The legion 5 series are midrange value kings. Nothing even comes close. Found a legion 5i 2024 with an I9-14900HX, 4070, and 32gb of ddr5 RAM for $1669 discounted from $2,200. The legion slim 5i has a 4070, a very good cpu for efficiency and gaming and 16gb ddr5 ram for 1300 right now at my area. All 2024, all brand new
Some advice from someone whos had two brands experience. (Aorus 3080 laptop and 4060 LOQ lenovo) Please go test out keyboard at micro center or best buy or walmart etc. I would happily spend more on getting a Lenovo keyboard after trying them out both because this isnt a small investment. You are paying for the premium of portability so just make sure you will enjoy it 😊.

Lenovo did the Legion Slim 16″ with an AMD 8845HS and 4070 using that new form factor (the white one you showed, but not in white). They had a pretty good sale over Memorial Day weekend too. I would say the most practical solution is to wait for the nvidia 5000 series because there wont be a lot time left till they appear. But if you have a need for current gen..yea go for it or last gen. 2024 models only have better i/o and displays than last gen. The 2024 cpu gpu are like rebranded versions of last gen (e.g ryzen 8845hs = 7840hs) I was looking to buy a new one to replace my 2021 Legion 5 with 5600h and 3060 but the differences in performance that make sense to me are the 4080+ models ones which are at a very high price…like 2500+ € so yea…decisions…decisions. From what i gathered, this year a good combination would be a Ryzen 7/9 + a 4080 for the most bang for the buck. 4070 is like 10-20% (with at least 200€ difference) increase over 4060 which is ~20% better than 3060, but with a 4080…if you spend 2500€+ on a laptop you wish to keep it for at least 3+ years investment wise…and cosidering the 5000 series is around the corner…yea, i hope you get my point.
Gamers Buy: – 1 Mac Mini M2 for 50k – PS5 for 50k I highly recommend the Mac Mini M2 as it provides the best value for money. Spending 2-3 lakhs on a PC setup that you might regret after a year is not worth it, especially if you dislike Windows laptops and PCs like me. Great article, Personally, I don’t really want to buy a new laptop now because there is no real upgrade this year. The upcoming Arrow/Lunar lake, Zen5, RTX 5000 are real deal next year. But, my laptop suddenly break, so I have to get one. I ended up with HP Omen 14 I know it’s not powerful, but I mostly play old/indy games, so it’s kinda enough for me. The design is elegant, thin, and light. The OLED screen is gorgeous. I don’t want a big thick powerful laptop anymore, that’s why go with a small laptop. ASUS G14 is my close 2nd choice, but I got $300 discount at BestBuy for HP Omen 14 ($1,999 -> $1,699).

Hi Dave, after a long time it feels I can give you a few free suggestions. The split you did in the article with you in 30% of the screen and the product occupying 70%, that didn’t feel neat to my eyes maybe I’m wrong but it felt so, rather have a circular cutout at the bottom right of the screen or just have the product or you occupying the whole screen like always. Even the canera angle from behind you from the right side felt was not very accurate rather stick to the overhead. Secondly its been a long time we have not had a setting up a new laptop article from you actually this opinion comes to my mind as I’ve got a new legion pro7i😅. New 2024 Legion 7 marketed in india has TGP of 115W and not 140W. Also, the charger brick is of 230 W rather than a 300W as in 5i Pro. So clearly it’s looking underpowered for gaming expectations. Otherwise it was my choice bcoz of color white, and that 3.2k display. Now i think I’ll have to opt for the 5i pro supporting 140W TGP and 300W adapter to handle it but with a worse display than the legion 7i. What do u suggest sir?
White legion 7 is soo good and only thing I feel bad for is it not having a 4080 option. 4080 is such a sweet spot for future proofing. they have a 140W 4070. That is such a waste!!! Isnt G16 like 4080 and 4090 max up to 115W? I would have loved for lenovo to use the Core Ultra Chips to save more wattage and give a 150W 4080 (or even 140W) which would still do circles around 115W! Now that I think of it, I don’t see any laptops that are giving 4080 a fair treatment. its either underpowered or overpowered, never a medium powered in a thin laptop.

Man I am such a Razer fan now. I got the Blade 15 2021 Advanced for college a couple years back and I am still in love with it. Just the best laptop. I got it on a huge sale too so that was awesome. Upgraded the nvme and the ram and I don’t need a new laptop for a long time. Might get an external gpu someday
I bought a razer blade 16 with a 4080 and honestly I found it seriously too much fan noise to the point of being bothersome. Probably I am just picky. I ended up returning it because in truth I don’t think the gaming laptop product category suits me, and I ended up spending similar money on a desktop with a 4090, which I am happy with. I do truly love the idea of a quiet and powerful gaming laptop but I don’t think such a product exists. I game on my macbook as well with an m3 pro and it is vastly quieter under load, although not silent at all.
I am so agree with your take on m16r2. m16r1 used to be the powerhouse of all 16″ gaming laptops. Sure it’s bulky and much heavier, but it was the muscle car, it has the best performance and cooling capability. A casual glance at the graphic on 3:22 makes it look like Intel Ultra 9 185 H has a longer battery life than AMD 89455HS But if the ratio of battery size to time is matched to 99Wh, (73Wh/99Wh = 231minutes/ X minutes.) it’s about 313 minutes. A hypothetical 5 hr and 13 minutes on an AMD 8945HS beats Intel Core Ultra 9 185H by 56 minutes or approximately 21.79% Obviously, just estimating here but I’d imagine it’s safe to assume the AMD 8945HS will have at least 15% longer battery life than the Intel 9 Ultra 185H. I was doing the match for myself but figured I’d share it so nobody else has to. 🙂
People underestimate the saturation and contrast levels that a glossy screen offers over a matte screen, basically the reason I switched to mac (I know they have great screens regardless, but there just wasn’t any good glossy screens for windows laptops at the time). They are also ‘crispier’, even on the same resolution, because the matte finish is basically a difusor
me perusal this article on my alienware m16r1: R2 with ultra cpus are A HUGE MISTAKE…it’s okay to get someting similar against asus’s g16 but why they gave up on performace machine like m16r1? simply got 14th HX refresh or keep seeling m16r1 until new gen GPU arrives. Dell, if ain’t broke, why you wanna fix it? also a hugh mistake on AMD config that delete R9 7945HX option, this is the BEST mobile CPU on market, why delete this config? keep selling it, I reget getting intel version cuz it runs hot on games, I still much prefer R9-7945HX over i9-13900HX
Was actually going to get the x16 r2 as my first alienware product almost purely because of its design IF it came with mini led or oled, pref oled. But after doing extensive research I can safely say alienware deliberately tries to cheap out on costs, so arguably, it has THE WORST screen offer right now. AND….it comes with ultra chip which..ye battery lasts longer, but it reduces performance on a GAMING LAPTOP. Hence I instead got a 2023 legion pro 7 with 4090 for 1000 bucks less! Thats…insane considering theres basiaclly no difference between 2023 and 2024 models.
Scratching my head, wondering why you didn’t talk about one of my favorite & “most” powerful gaming laptops of 2024… THE MSI TITAN 18 HX & THE MSI RAIDER GE78 HX! Im truly shocked how neither of these made the cut! Possibly it might have something to do with their price, considering that there damn near 6 grand whilst your line-up was more “budget friendly.” I also find it crazy how there wasn’t a single MSI laptop… I wonder why? Do you have a gripe about MSI or something?

Hello. I’m looking for a laptop that I can use for my study (programming) but also game a bit on the side. Now i’m kind of torn between the Asus G16 and the Yoga pro 9i 16′ and the Legion variants. If i compare the cost for my country, for the G16 i would pay 2250 euros for the ultra 7 155H and a 4070, with 16GB ram, this is with a sale. For the yoga 9i pro 16′, I would pay 2340 euros, because they have a student program with which i can save 10% on the price, it has the ultra 9 185H, 4070 and 32GB ram. This is with the Mini-led screen upgrade and a 1 euro (why lol) 2 year premium guarantee. I’m leaning more towards the yoga pro 9i because it seems to be more cost effective and offer more performance then the g16. The other versions of the g16 go, with a sale,upwards to 3400 for the 9 ultra and 4080 to 4100 for the 9 ultra with 4090. I’ve looked at the Legion Pro 7i, but is maybe too flashy to be in a classroom and according to this article the cpu is power ineffiecient, so I’m worried i have to charge it often with a big charger. It might not be the case though as it has the bigger battery with about 100Wh compared to the yoga’s 84 Wh. It goes for about 2900 with the student coupon + external sale and a 4080. I don’t really need the gpu performance, however, it just needs to be able to run games on high res max settings at an acceptable framerate for the refresh rate, and the legion seems to have a worse screen. There is however also the regular Legion 7i Gen 9, the one in the vid with white and a 4070, i9 14900hx and 32gb ram.
Literally there are no good laptops this year, coming from an m2 macbook air, i got the zephyrus, returned it because of the hinge, it was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE, got the m3 pro, sleek, sturdy and beautiful display! Advice for anyone who’s looking to get zephyrus, its a perfect laptop with the worst possible designed hinge, that too in 2024!!
Your comment on Legion I7 should use the Ulta 9 chip is a poor recommendation as it’s only 10% better than the 12th gen i7-12700H. As a power office user that runs 3 screens I am thinking of upgrading to the Legion I7 because it has the i9-14900HX. I am concerned about the battery but 99% of the time I have my laptop docked at work or at home to Dell thunderbolt 4 doc with 2 * 2k monitors. Also not sure if I can use the Dell USB Dock with the Legion It? Any advice is appreciated??
Yeah g16 a nice prospect but not at £3300 just for 4080 model. We’re not in the boundaries of sanity yet no matter if you can afford that or not. I’ve been toying with buying HP Omen last 2d, 16 or 17″ model. I see they now have an oled 4070, sooo tempted BUT 4070 such a let down. Great prices, good to see them sporting 4nm Ryzens instead of 10nm Intel 13th & 14th gens
those charts can give a very skewed image, especially in terms of iGPU performance (Arc vs Radeon). Intel Arc has a lot of inconsistencies in games, but performs well in synthetics. And the 780M typically gets over 3K in synthetics. And battery life on Ryzen 8000 is much better in real world tests compared to Core ultra.
I just want a 14″ 1080p thin gaming laptop with a normal rtx 4060 and a low powered CPU. You don’t need more than 1080p on a 14″ screen. I’m using my 2021 G14 mostly at the desk with my 1440p monitor and it does pretty decent but if it was the 4060 I could use that sweet sweet frame generation and everything would be great.

i’m really jealous USA has microcentre, huge discounts on best buy and great refurbished/ used market. Tired of the over-priced shit being sold here in India, i’m aware of the taxes and customs but this is different. I saw an rtx 4080 super priced 50k higher than 4080 from the same brand and seller while it is supposed to be cheaper💀. Many gullible people fall for this trap. refurbished premium laptops sell at roughly same price as new🙄
I am just sad there is no more a laptop like Asus flow x13 anymore. I just want a laptop with no gamer esthetic that i could use for my work and take anywhere. Also means it would be nice if it was as thin and battery efficient as possible but at the same time it should be able to run games when needed. I mean sounds like i want a lot but Flow x13 showed it is somewhat possible so i am just surprised that idea didn’t continue. I guess something like Razer and Asus 14 inch laptops are close enough but still not quite. Seems like that a device like that would canibalise other product categories the brands have set up.

You do realize most gamers use headphones right ? because we play on a laptop and we like those things to be kept cool and to do so, guess what? we max out the fans which creates more noise, which can be muffled by the headphones, jezas christ dude, how the fck did you become one of the most appreciated content creators when it comes to these kind of devices? Also the OLED is not that big of a deal breaker since most of the companies now sell gaming laptops with OLED display, in terms of pricing, that is different from country to country, you can get some pretty good deals if you live in the states (from bestbuy). Was expecting to see a device by device comparison, from different manufacturers in terms of gpu / cpu performance, battery life, thermals and so on, nobody cares about speakers and OLED displays, my man.
Honestly speaking, i just need a good gaming laptop with excellent battery life so that i could study without ever worrying about my laptop shutting off and game whenever im free. Im really lost because the only thing that sorta fits this description is the samsung galaxy book ultra. However, its battery life isnt that good😪😆.
Dave, you’re wrong. XPS are horrible laptops in terms of case and keyboard ergonomics. Period. The fact that they are even here is shameful. I stopped perusal you long time ago because of you choices and questionable design bias instead of real world usage bias. You got lazy and the second angle camera doesn’t add anything to the quality of your content. Maybe you have some illusions about it? Cheers.
seriously tho, dont buy the TUF like dave recommended, might as well buy other similar configurations with other brands. been using TUF A16 and i hate the experience im facing rn. its buggy its glitchy. TUF is really all about the specs that is good on paper to attract buyers but really is just a crapy laptop
