A first-level Wizard can cast at least 3 1st-, 2nd-, and 1 3rd-level spells per day, with an Intelligence score of 11 or higher. Witches and familiars have no limit to the number of spells known, starting with all 0-level witch spells and 3+INTmod 1st level spells. They automatically gain two spells of appropriate level every level.
A witch/familiar begins with three cantrips and one 1st-level spell as a baseline. A high Intelligence score gives one bonus 1st-level spell. A 1st-level wizard can prepare one 1st-level wizard spell per day from the list of spells in their spellbook. If their Intelligence ability score is 13 or higher, they can prepare an extra.
A 5th-level Sorcerer could have anywhere from 6 First s-level spells to 4 2nd s-level spells and 2 3rd s-level spells (assuming they “traded out”). A wizard’s level limits the number of spells they can prepare and cast. A 1st-level wizard with an Intelligence score of 16 can prepare three cantrips and two first-level spells.
A cleric can have 25 spells prepared at level 20 unless they elevate their Wis beyond mortal means. On average, a single spellbook will be filled when a wizard is about 8th level. You can scribe all existing spells into your spellbook if you find them, but you can’t prepare more than 27 spells at any spell level.
Spells come in two types: arcane (cast by bards, sorcerers, and wizards) and divine (cast by clerics, druids, etc.). A spell is a one-time magical effect and can be cast by various characters, such as wizards, sorcerers, and bards.
