Colorado voters approved a ballot measure in the midterm election, legalizing the use of psilocybin and psilocin, two psychedelic compounds found in magic mushrooms. This decision has made Colorado the second state to decriminalize and legalize recreational psychedelics. Proposition 122, which passed by a narrow margin, allows people 21 and older to grow, share, and consume psilocybin in state-regulated centers. Colorado is now one of the first states to have its own Division of Natural Medicine that will issue licenses to spaces where psilocybin will be.
The law changed around the start of the year to remove many criminal penalties related to possessing and using psilocybin mushrooms and some other substances. Colorado voters made Colorado the first state in America where residents can legally grow and share psilocybin mushrooms in 2022. Prop 122 enabled adults to have legal psychedelics in Colorado at certified centers under the care of licensed facilitators. It is now legal for people 21 and older to possess, share, and use magic mushrooms, including psilocybin, psilocin, DMT, ibogaine, and mescaline.
Those seeking to become part of Colorado’s psychedelics industry by growing mushrooms, operating a healing center, or manufacturing psilocybin are encouraged to seek out resources such as guided experiences and mushroom-related businesses. The new law could push psychedelic mushrooms back out of sight, but it remains a significant step forward in the fight against psychedelic addiction.
