Senate Bill 242 proposes the decriminalization of psychedelic mushrooms, also known as “magic mushrooms”, in Nevada. The bill, which was passed by a Senate committee, would allow research on psilocybin as a medical treatment for mental health issues and decriminalize it for people in approved studies. Nevada is one of the states that has not moved to legalize or decriminalize psilocybin, and p. Magic mushrooms, LSD, MDMA, and ketamine are all illegal in Nevada, with harsh penalties for possession.
The original bill proposed in Nevada this year would have seen the state take a similar approach as Oregon. The possession, use, and cultivation of up to 4 ounces of psilocybin-containing mushrooms would be allowed. The bill is supported by veterans and neuroscientists. New Nevada law requires the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a working group to discuss and study the therapeutic uses of psychedelics like psilocybin.
Senate Democrats introduced a bill to legalize small amounts of psilocybin or psilocin for people 18 and older and study their medical benefits. The bill would also allow research on MDMA for people. As of now, psilocybin is illegal in Nevada, but the framework is set for further study and a recommendation for legislation by the end of this year.
