Levitation is a powerful magic trick that can be performed by magicians using hidden platforms, wires, mirrors, and other devices. It involves setting an object straight up and gently placing it in the stream of air to let go carefully. The object should be hovering in mid-air with minimal wobble-age. This article outlines the Balducci method for levitation, which requires only two feet and an audience open to the possibility of magic.
There are many ways to make objects levitate, including cards and bills mysteriously, and the Balducci levitation, a self-portrait illusion. This trick gives the audience the illusion that you’re levitating off the ground. Some popular tricks to perform with Loops or invisible thread include the Floating Bill, Floating Ring, Rising Card, and Pencil in Bottle.
Magicians use various devices, such as strings and wax, elastic loops, static electricity, and mirrors, to create the illusion of levitating objects or people. For example, the Levitating Street Performer trick uses an apparatus that supports a platform on which the performer sits. One way to seemingly levitate objects is with a big mirror, which must be large enough so that the performer can get their leg over it. If the mirror is correctly angled, the illusion can be achieved.
In conclusion, levitation is a powerful magic trick that can be performed by magicians using various devices like loops, wires, mirrors, and other devices. By following simple instructions and using common household items, magicians can create the illusion of defying gravity and animate objects with magic.

Not new to Magic in exposure, but quite a newbie in learning the craft myself. It’s so rewarding to learn just one simple thing and pulling it off… Patience is a virtue, not an easy one for me, learning. At 50 years old, I’m not looking for a career in magic, just entertainment and outlet for others. And yeah, That WOW factor … Some never know how simple kindness is. How powerful it is in taking the time to make others smile, how it can change a persons moment, day or life….instantly. Sorry, not sorry… THAT IS MAGIC!! And THAT IS what MAGIC brings to people’s hearts!! The wonderment of what they cannot see for themselves…. Deep, yeah.. Is, what it is!! I love doing tricks I do well and still, practicing, practicing, practicing! Thank you for your SUPER GREAT TIPS on self designing and sharing how you’ve developed…
Thanks for sharing some of your secrets. Loving all the cool tips. I used to do a clown act with my parents and little brother. We each learned a few magic tricks and had a blast doing it. My dad would design his own rigs for levitation, none as good as yours, but for a family of clowns we had fun. We would visit children in the hospitals and preform at kids parties. I’ve kept it up on the side for a couple of decades. Mostly I would just wake up and feel like spreading some wonder, so I would in the apply the makeup slip into the cotume and head to the children’s hospital to cheer up the kids. I haven’t done it in a few years, but after perusal your article, I am inspired to play with some magic and maybe wake up that clown inside of me again. Thanks for that. First thing I am going to do is mess with my friends when they come over for cocktails this weekend. Haha! I hope to win your prizes, but look forward to your next articles even more… but winning the give away would be the cherry on top! Ha! I’d love to see you do a live show. Are you performing on stage near Cleveland, Ohio any time soon?
Rich, I may never try these fascinating tricks because I suspect lots of the hand movements are learned at the fine motor level which understandably takes many hours of dedicated practice. I loved your article. You were superb in your demonstrations. Your audiences are huge and deservedly so. Take a bow for your creative genius — bravo!
Dude…I absolutely LOVE your take on the “Zombie” illusion!!! Absolutely brilliant, simplified and something you can literally “throw together” for impromptu situations. You would loose a lot of the “precice control” over the “ball” that you would have with a stage version because you trade the prop for a ordinary fork and have to make due with THAT supporting the “ball” and whatever movement you can transfer to the ball using the fork… but being able to whip it up and perform it without actually having the zombie props is freaking AWESOME! One thing I might suggest for it… instead of simply holding the fork with your fingers (which DOES greatly limit the “natural” looking movements you can do because you must hold on to BOTH the cloth AND the “rod” supporting your “ball”)…. your knife/watch thing for levitting things… what if you use a ring on your finger (probably won’t work because most rings “fit” snug on your finger and really couldnt squeeze the handle of a fork between the ring and your finger) or SOMETHING like that… that more closely resembles the actual “Zombie” control rod that is just that… a ring that you put on one of your fingers that the rod is attached to that attaches to the ball….. The watch idea wont work because you loose almost ALL the control ability and it would be too far to reach for the “fork”. In any case if you can find a simple EASY way to “slide the fork between a finger and the thing ON the finger” like you did for the knife/watch levitating anyting you can wedge in the hole.
Wow what a great article. I have been wanting to learn some tricks like these but had no luck searching. Rich makes them look easy and emphasizes importance on critical features. I’m going to start practicing tonight. I’ll be 59 on Friday 11/10 and hope to impress and wow my friends at the party. Thank you rich. Great presentation article. Very well put together and easy to understand. Also please consider me in the giveaway. Kip Sears. I’ve had fun with being able to spin a straw on a bottle with static. It fools everyone. Thanks,Kip
Hey Rich! That was awesome. I’m a big fan of Penn & Teller for giving up all of the easy stuff so I appreciate this very much. It’s amazing how you think about angles and non-obvious control. I’m sure you’ve only scratched the surface of what you know and that’s fine. Bar tricks are cool for people who don’t want to practice (me). “Real magic” is for the likes of you. 🙂
I have a quick question.. I’ve always been really impressed with magic tricks and have catch myself wondering sometimes how this one or that one was done. But knowing is kind of a disappointment in a way. Someone like you that knows how to do things like this, do you ever get YOUR mind blown? Or catch yourself trying to pick apart the trick knowing that it can’t possibly be real?
