Why doesn t Illinois have a mascot?

The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) has urged the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to replace its “Indian” mascot with a more inclusive one, as the use of Native imagery and stereotypes has negatively impacted the psychological well-being and educational experiences of both Native American and non-native American youth. The former mascot, Chief Illiniwek, was retired in 2007 under pressure from the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

The use of Native mascots perpetuates stereotypes, creates a hostile learning environment, and undermines the self-esteem of Native American youth. NARF is advocating for a complete replacement of the “Indian” mascot and urges the university to prioritize this issue.

What is Illinois College’s nickname?

Illinois College, a private liberal arts college in Jacksonville, Illinois, is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church (USA). It was the first college in Illinois to grant a degree in 1835 and was founded in 1829 by the Yale Band, students from Yale College who traveled westward to found new colleges. The college briefly served as the state’s first medical school from 1843 to 1848. John M. Ellis, a Presbyterian missionary, saw the need for a “seminary of learning” in Illinois and sought the attention of Congregational students at Yale College.

Edward Beecher, the first president, imbued the college with New England traditions and academic foundations. His sister Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the influential anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, visited the campus and his brother Henry Ward Beecher preached and lectured at the college. Beecher Hall, named in his honor, is the first building constructed on the Illinois College campus.

What was Illinois’ old mascot?

From 1926 to 2007, Chief Illiniwek was the symbol for the Fighting Illini, a Native American confederation of indigenous tribes in Illinois. The symbol was portrayed by a white student and performed during halftime at Illinois football and basketball games, wearing a feathered headdress and buckskin clothes. It was customary for fans and attendees to raise their arms at the end of halftime proceedings and yell “chief”. In 2005, the NCAA cited Chief Illiniwek as “hostile or abusive” in a policy that banned schools from full participation in postseason activities as long as they continued to use such mascots.

The University of Illinois retired Chief Illiniwek in 2007, and the university chancellor appointed a Commission on Native Imagery to recommend ways to provide closure, healing, reconciliation, and honor and partner with the Native Nations for whom Illinois is their ancestral home. The Fighting Illini are one of three Big Ten programs without a mascot.
