The Errors In Tropical Astrology?

Astrology often exploits people’s tendency to buy into generic descriptions of themselves, with modern astrophycists pointing out that signs that people perceive can be incorrect. The main reason astrological signs fail to align with the zodiac is a wobble in the Earth’s rotational axis called precession, which causes the Earth to bulge. Tropical astrology, the branch of astrology practiced most prevalently in the western world, is based on these teachings, and Ophiuchus is not acknowledged as such.

Tropical signs are relative to the Sun and its position, while Sidereal is mapped to fixed stars. Each system has its positives and negatives, and astrologers have invoked subtle effects such as a specific human sensitivity to gravitational waves whose periods correspond to planetary revolutions. About a third of Americans believe astrology is “very” or “sort of scientific”. However, tropical astrology is an inaccurate reflection of the sky, using a measurement that was only accurate 2000 years ago and is getting more inaccurate as time passes due to the precession of the equinoxes.

The use of different zodiacs can lead to different interpretations of the positions of the sun. The Tropical Zodiac, the zodiac most Western astrologers use, is based on where the sun was stationed on each calendar day 2000+ years ago.

Is there any truth in astrology?

Astrology, a long-standing scientific field, has been criticized for lacking clear evidence that stars and planets affect us. Astrology relies on stories and ideas that are difficult to prove with science, as it relies on guessing about patterns in the sky rather than conducting experiments. Additionally, astrology’s workings are based on old ideas about the universe, which have evolved over time. This has led to some astrologers’ predictions not aligning with current knowledge.

For example, the zodiac sign may not be accurate due to precession, which has caused stars to move since the first invention of astrology. Furthermore, astrology lacks a clear explanation for how stars and planets could affect us, with some astrologers suggesting it is due to the stars, but scientists argue these theories are too weak to have a significant impact on us.

What does it mean if your zodiac is tropical?

The Tropical Zodiac is a concept that indicates a person’s birth sign, which is one of 12 zones around the Earth. Each zone has an angular length of 30 0. The frame of reference for these zones is the sun’s positions relative to the Earth’s horizon. As the sun moves through the seasons, its altitude changes, and the compass bearings of its rising and setting positions. These signs are not directly related to a group of stars that can be seen in the sky.

For example, if you were born on the March Equinox, your birth sign would be 0 0 Aries, meaning the sun would have risen exactly in the east and set in the west. The March Equinox and 0 0 Aries are synonymous. On the June Solstice, your birth sign would be 0 0 Cancer, meaning the sun would have risen in the northeast and set in the northwest. The Tropic of Cancer is as far north as the sun gets in the course of the year for an earth-based observer.

Is Western Astrology same as Tropical?

The zodiac is a system of twelve constellations that guide the movement of the Sun, Moon, and planets across the sky. Astrologers have developed a system of twelve signs based on these constellations, which are considered “Enlightened by the mind”. The tropical zodiac, typically used by western astrologers, begins with the sign of Aries at the Northern Hemisphere vernal equinox on or around March 21.

The Western Zodiac is based on the Earth’s relationship to fixed positions in the sky and the Earth’s seasons, while the Sidereal Zodiac is based on the Earth’s position in relation to the constellations.

The precession of the equinoxes causes a slow shift in the correspondence between Earth’s seasons and the constellations of the zodiac. The tropical zodiac corresponds with the Earth’s position in relation to fixed positions in the sky, while the sidereal zodiac is based on the position in relation to the constellations.

In modern Western astrology, the zodiac signs represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression, divided into four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. Fire and air signs are considered masculine, while water and earth signs are considered feminine. The twelve signs are also divided into three qualities, or modalities, Cardinal, fixed, and mutable.

Can Vedic astrology be wrong?

Astrology has been criticized by the scientific community for lacking explanatory power for describing the universe. Scientific testing has been conducted, but no evidence has been found to support the premises or purported effects outlined in astrological traditions. Despite its status as a pseudoscience, astrology retains a position among the sciences in modern India. In 2001, India’s University Grants Commission and Ministry of Human Resource Development introduced “Jyotir Vigyan” or “Vedic astrology” as a discipline of study in Indian universities, stating that it allows for accurate predictions on time scale. This decision was backed by a 2001 judgement of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Despite widespread protests from the scientific community and Indian scientists working abroad, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition in 2004 that astrology was not a promotion of religion. In 2011, the Bombay High Court referred to the 2004 ruling when it dismissed a case challenging astrology’s status as a science. As of 2014, astrology continues to be taught at various universities in India, and there is a movement to establish a national Vedic University to teach astrology alongside the study of tantra, mantra, and yoga.

Is there any evidence that astrology is wrong?

Research shows no strong correlation between astrological signs and life outcomes, with studies showing that zodiac signs are not as effective as random numbers in predicting subjective well-being and quality of life. Confirmation bias, a psychological factor contributing to belief in astrology, is also a significant issue. Astrology believers often selectively remember predictions that turned out to be true, while not remembering those that turned out false. Another form of confirmation bias is the failure to distinguish between messages demonstrating special ability and those that do not.

What's the difference between sidereal and tropical astrology?

What’s the difference between sidereal and tropical astrology?

Sidereal astrology accounts for Earth’s axial precession and maintains alignment between signs and constellations through corrective systems called ayanamsas. Tropical astrology, on the other hand, is based on the seasonal cycle of the Northern hemisphere and does not consider axial precession. Some tropical astrologers modify the zodiac to reflect Southern hemisphere seasons, such as taking Libra as the sign that coincides with the spring equinox instead of Aries.

Ayanamsa systems used in Hindu astrology include the Lahiri ayanamsa and the Raman ayanamsa, with the Lahiri ayanamsa being the most widely used. The Fagan-Bradley ayanamsa is an example of an ayanamsa system used in Western sidereal astrology. As of 2020, Sri Yukteswar ayanamsa calculated sun signs around 23 degrees behind tropical sun signs, indicating that persons born between March 12 – April 12 would have the sun sign of Pisces, while those born between March 21 – April 19 would have the sun sign of Aries.

A small number of sidereal astrologers define their signs based on the actual width of individual constellations, including those disregarded by the traditional zodiac but still in contact with the ecliptic.

Is the tropical astrology accurate?

The tropical and sidereal zodiacs are not astronomically accurate, as the constellations do not form a perfect 360º circle in the sky. Astrology accounts for most but not all of the constellations closest to the ecliptic. Which is more accurate, Vedic or Western Astrology?

Vedic astrology is considered more accurate due to its consideration of planets and their movements. Unlike western astrology, which uses a fixed tropical reading, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac to calculate horoscopes. This approach takes into account the changing patterns and universe as a whole, making it more detailed and accurate. The twelve astrological signs include Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. While both Vedic and western astrology have similar planets and interpretations, Vedic calculations are more detailed and potentially more reliable.

Astrodienst, also known as Astro. com, is a popular site for free natal chart readings. It offers horoscopes written by human astrologers and computer-generated into a holistic birth chart for each individual. The site offers 16 different types of horoscopes, including Psychological, Money and Success, Career and Vocation, and The Child’s Horoscope, with free previews of buyable content. The horoscopes are written by various astrologers who view the chart through different lenses. The Personal Portrait is the most complete horoscope, but the Psychological Horoscope by Liz Greene is highly recommended.

Cafe Astrology is another site that offers horoscopes and astrological information about zodiac signs and planets since 2022. It is an encyclopedia of beginner astrology with numerous types of reports, both free and paid, as well as “cookbook astrology” such as descriptions of each planet in each sign viewed through the lens of a natal chart, love, or how the latest retrograde planet will affect your sign. Both sites provide valuable insights into astrology and provide a comprehensive understanding of one’s natal chart.

Nādi Astrology is a detailed and accurate method of predicting the future based on the combined results of all sixteen divisional charts. However, it requires precise birth time and knowledge of genuine Nādi texts, which are often unpublished and kept secret by custodians. This is similar to Samhitā texts in north India, such as Bhrigu Samhitā or Rāvana Samhitā. Atma, the’real’ self, is immortal and characterizes the real self. It changes only to the physical bodies during common stages such as birth, childhood, teenage, adulthood, old age, and death.

Atma enters a different body based on one’s Karma and takes form based on their good or bad deeds. In Karmic terms, a transition like this is like a person being promoted or demoted based on their sincerely, honest, and efficient work in an organization.

Who created the tropical zodiac?

Who created the tropical zodiac?

Ptolemy’s system of zodiacs divided the ecliptic into 12 zodiacal signs, each a 30° segment around four celestial points: the March equinox, the June solstice, the September equinox, and the December solstice. Although there is no natural beginning of the zodiac, Ptolemy assumed that the sign that begins with the vernal equinox, that of Aries, is the starting point of them all. Although Ptolemy made Aries the first zodiacal sign, the star pattern was inconsequential to his astrology, as signs were used to meter out the seasons.

  • After learning about sidereal placements and how tropical astrology doesn’t even line up with the actual constellations anymore (yet every astrologer acts like they do), it’s really very hard to take the tropical system serious anymore. I don’t know how people just ignore that and continue on using the tropical system.

  • Epic! Yeah, i become aware of the Sidereal zodiac around 7 years ago. I never took astrology seriously until i stumbled on some articles on Facebook that advertised how NASA had miscalculated the dates etc. I initially found it hilarious that people who claimed to be a sign and tried to explain themselves that way, actually had the wrong sign. Since then, i have found it realky exciting to learn more about the realities of the true zodiac and its relationship to how we understand ourselves. Its the poetry of the stars, thats for sure. 😊👍

  • Hey all you wonderful souls. Tropical is just as “right” as sidereal astrology. You have to understand, astrology applies in every angle you view it from. You just will “see” different things. Just like when you turn around your physical body 360 degrees. From my personal experience, Sidereal is the most accurate representation of your deepest core Moon experience (and to get to this level, it takes knowing yourself) which represents your Mind and the subjective filter in which you process the input/information you get thru your life experience. Tropical is like applying astrology to Earth as the ascendant, which is EXTREMELY important to include. My entire Monadic twin flame journey is broken down in clear Saturnian/Uranian polarities in Tropical astrology, and my DF energy is polarized +/- with my twin. Our emotional experience of our DF energy is way more easy to relate to, being interpreted thru Sidereal astrology, fiery masculine-feminine Aries Bharani moons instead of Earthy Taurus moons. The 3d experience is more Earthy, the 4-5d feels more fiery. Our Monadic Soul/Sun polarities, is way more obvious to read in Tropical astrology, Tropical being more Sun/DM-focused. So Tropical and Sidereal astrology are both extremely important to gather information from, if you want a fuller picture of information. Some people do Tropical astrology with Sidereal nashaktras. That’s a great combination, if you have a deeper understanding of what each layer of information represents, and you don’t confuse these.

  • I looked at my sidereal chart and what information I could gather 😱😱😱 The moment you mentioned Cancer being a turtle vs. Crab, I totally felt that final pull to look into this chart vs the Tropical. Can I just say, I never felt fully like my traditional sign. When I read my sidereal chart and my sun sign changed, the whole feel of my chart changed… that pressure to be what I wasn’t lifted instantly.

  • I’m so glad to find your website. I’ve been saying this. Edgar Cayce who had access to the Akashic record stated that sidereal astrology located somewhere in Persia was more accurate than Western astrology. I noticed I’m fiery in nature but in Western astrology I’m Taurus but sidereal Aires. So happy your article got recommended to me. 🙏🏽

  • I am fascinated by the precession of the equinox. It is a timepiece on a massive scale which most people are completely oblivious. As far as my limited knowledge goes, I understand that when the ancient Babylonians were first studying the stars and planets, they were in the Age of Taurus when the Royal stars Aldebaran and Antares were both rising and setting on the vernal equinoxes. I also find it interesting that the constellation of Leo was rising on the spring equinox during the time that some believe is the time that the Sphinx was originally constructed – the sphinx originally being a lion with its head later remodeled. The Sphinx faces due East and even looks like Leo constellation in profile. Thanks for the article. Subscibed.

  • 26 years now i’ve spent thinking i was supposed to be a lion; fiery, driven and a natural leader, but a year ago i turned my eyes to the night sky, and found out that the sign was pretty much off. Now it finally makes sense why i was always a predominantly quiet and introspective boy, now a young man seeking to understand myself in a complete way. I was never going to be a lion, and leo was never my true sign. My sign is Cancer, which i know now, inwardly and in the sky.

  • I thought I was a Taurus sun all my life however in the sidereal cart my south node is in Taurus! I checked my daughter bc she was a “Leo”. Her ascendant is in Leo in sidereal chart. This makes total sense to me. Would you go with moon sign or ascendant sign for main traits? I have always thought we embody the entire chart. On another note I’m looking into the old meanings before it got changed. I find this fascinating. Thank you for making this article!

  • In western astrology, I am a Capricorn sun and Scorpio rising and this year I was told that pluto would be in my 4th house of home but it didnt make sense cause my whole foundation was broken down mentally, emotionally, family members passed etc, so I was confused how I could go through the same thing twice and in Sidereal I am a Sagittarius sun and Libra rising and I am going into my 5th house which made so much more sense also I am far from the Capricorn and Scorpio persona. Sidereal for me now❤

  • Curious how you interpret the houses or your house system? I’ve found true sidereal astrology to be much more accurate and discovering it (after having my own instinctual urge to find something that was astronomically oriented) made me actually take a real deep interest in astrology. But recently I’ve been questioning the house system…wondering if each sign should be it’s own house, but in true sidereal that would make the sizes of the houses vary significantly. Just curious about your thoughts on this. Thanks for this article, very interesting!

  • Thank you so much!❤ I do believe that the use of the tropical system by the masses was planned. Because I think the best way to control people is to give them false beliefs and inaccurate maps. I was a Taurus following that system, and I believed myself to be that for the majority of my life. Turns out I’m an Aries, and these things make much more sense to me. I believe in studying to show ourselves approved, and I am grateful for the work that you have put in to understand this, and reclaim this ancient knowledge. 🙏

  • Why use constellations though, if you want to be “sidereal”? There are just dots of light up there in the night sky, and to put them arbitrarily into named groups is meaningless. One could make other groups of the same stars and image they resemble some earthly creature or whatever. Tropical astrology at least has the solid foundation of the Sun’s yearly cycle punctuated by the moon’s monthly cycle creating 12 equal divisions, and the Sun’s cardinal points as anchors for the zodiac. That the divisions were named after constellations is the unfortunate mistake confusing us all. The meanings of the divisions (signs) can be reasonably created from the cardinal directions and sign rulerships based on the speed of planets, although this is certainly debatable.

  • WOW! Just discovered your website! YEY! Liked and subscribed, I am emersed in study of Ancient Astrology and its FACINATING. I always was drawn to Astrology, and spend so much money going to all kinds of Astrologers, and it didn’t really ‘sit’ well with me, couple of years, I discovered Ancient Babylonian Astrology and I am all in, fixed stars and all. So far I only watched one of your articles and I am wondering what in your view is the difference between Sumerian, and Babylonian Astrology? Is there a article or blog in which you are discussing it?

  • I really value the knowledge you shared here! you effectively presented in a grounded way — visually depicting all of this using the software was so useful for me. I’m checking out your Etsy store offerings right now! I’m also eager to learn more about this history for myself. are there any texts you can recommend??

  • I’m interested in your take on the usage of Ayanmasas. Stellarium very very obviously puts me in Libra moon, whereas Lahiri puts me in Scorpio moon(i don’t see it at all either LOL). I only use my actual astronomical placements now to be honest, I don’t see a reason to engage in an astrology system that’s scientifically, astronomically wrong. I’m interested in any media, book or lecture regarding this entire pre-Greek astrology topic. I’m fascinated and I just LOVE it. Now when i see tropical, i just think… look how they massacred my boy😆 Additionally, it’s fucking delightful to hear somebody actually talk and answer the questions i’ve had this WHOLE time!!! sorry if i sound ranty but god knows ive been trying to figure out where the hell is this element and planetary ruling stuff came from bc so much just did. Not. Add. Up. In that regard, I’m in desperate need of a book or anything at all that describes the original traits of the zodiac. I’ve always been skeptical, and for a good reason apparently. Post-greek astrology is yucky. “Ancient” astrology is somehow more contemporary than anything about tropical

  • Abbey, you are awesome! It’s so refreshing to hear the logical truth about sidereal astrology. It seems that the majority of professional western astrologers are ignorant of these blatant truths. They either refuse to take into account the continual but very slow shift of the vernal point (due to the precession of the equinoxes), or they just don’t understand it (which is what one professional astrologer admitted to me recently!). So they just ignore it, they don’t question it, and they just go with the majority opinion, all of which amounts to professional negligence and intellectual laziness. We are truly deep in the Age of Pisces, where delusion reigns supreme. Thank you, Abbey!

  • Abby, something seems off, a lot of famous ancient astrologers … like Ptolemy, either aren’t as good as we think Or they too perpetuated errors which many even in ancient history knew to be wrong . So for me all astrology is either 2 things- broad ethereal generalizations of a Libra acts these ways and a Leo acts their way or 2. Planets stars and heavenly bodies have real effects and those effects are time and space based, thoughts?

  • A great deal of the significations of the zodiac signs came upon by comparing them with the seasons, aries being the bringer of the heat of spring, Cancer the first house of a luminary, correlated with the abundance of light during the longest days of summer. There are many significations which are important to each sign and come from its relation with the seasons, they are marked by the equinoxes. For me both sistems work, because astrology is beyond normal logic, it is symbolic logic.

  • If I like someone I’ll usually dive through their back catalogue so here we are 😇 – I took all my undergrad science credits in astronomy and the obvious inaccuracy of tropical/Ptolemaic astrology had put me off the whole thing until I discovered Jyotish and sidereal. I’m chill and rather withdrawing yet I’m supposed to be a tropical Aries sun? No. I’m down with the fishes y’all. Sidereal literally redeemed the whole thing for me… no more 2000 years of Ptolemaic copy paste for me, as Krasi Attasio would say 😅 have a lovely day my beautiful friend 🙏

  • According to Saint gregorian calendar system since I’m born on June 23rd 2000 at 8:56pm in Benin-city Nigeria using tropical defines me as: sun – cancer moon – pisces mercury – cancer venus – cancer mars – cancer jupiter – taurus saturn – taurus neptune – aquarius uranus – aquarius asc – aquarius dsc – leo ic – taurus mc – scorpio Having a cancer stellium in tropical astrology system which is a 360 degree type system. However in Sidereal it switches sign placements significantly by 23 degrees back a sign. Sidereal astrology: sun – gemini moon – aquarius mercury in retrograde – gemini venus – gemini mars – gemini saturn – taurus jupiter – taurus neptune – capricorn uranus – capricorn asc – capricorn dsc – cancer mc – libra ic – aries Honestly um when I do tropical astrology it resonates with me even after analysing my life. It seems to fit.

  • The Greeks new about the procession of the equinoxes but a lot of stuff happened some known and a lot of history unknown. The question is, where is 0 degrees of Aries 😂 it was Al sharatan but the Vedic 0 Aries is in Pisces the most accurate I’ve seen is by using the 13 sign sidereal system but then your entire lunar mansion system goes to sh*t and that’s what I’ve been working on

  • Silly goose. You not yet realised both are equally valid perspectives, maybe you have by now. Just from different perspectives. See its like thinking the moons perspective is more important than the suns. They’re all just different perspectives like you and me… Either way much respect for doing your thing. Funny I’m actually commenting this on the summer solstice 😂

  • NO, EVERYONE KNOWS, WHAT THEIR ZODIAC SIGN IS, AS LONG AS, THEY KNOW WHAT DATE THEY WERE BORN WHICH THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE DO. TO KNOW, WHAT THEIR ASCENDANT AND MOON SIGN IS, IS NOT DIFFICULT TO FIND OUT, AS LONG AS, THEY KNOW, THE PLACE, THE TIME AND THE DATE, THEY WERE BORN. SOME PEOPLE RESONATE MORE WITH THEIR VEDIC BIRTH CHART AND MANY OTHERS RESONATES MORE WITH THEIR TROPICAL BIRTH CHART, INCLUDING MYSELF. IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE PERSON.

  • WELL, THE ASTROLOGER/SYSTEM, CAN ONLY BE ACCURATE, IF THEY PRESENT A BIRTH CHART WITH A PERSON’S ZODIAC SIGNS WHICH THEY ACCURATELY, RESONANT WITH 100% OR NEARLY 100%, HAVING ALL OR NEARLY ALL, THE CHARACTER TRAITS OF THAT ZODIAC SIGN. IF THE BIRTH CHART SHOWS ZODIAC SIGNS WHICH THE PERSON DOES NOT RESONANT AT ALL, WITH, HAVING NO CHARACTER TRAITS, OF THAT ZODIAC SIGN, WHATSOEVER EVER, THEN THAT ASTROLOGER/SYSTEM, CANNOT BE ACCURATE. THEY CAN’T TELL SOMEONE THAT THEY ARE A LEO RISING, WHEN THEY HAVE ALL THE CHARACTER TRAITS OF A GEMINI RISING AND HAVE NO CHARACTER TRAITS OF A LEO RISING, AT ALL.

  • The ego and sarcasm of this lady in the first two minutes was enough to put me off continuing perusal. Also, you cannot say a system is “wrong” when tropical astrologers have been getting perfectly accurate horary and electional results for centuries. If tropical didn’t work, neither would our horary astrologers get accurate results when looking for missing objects etc. The tropical zodiac was never meant to be constellation based. It simply used the names of the constellations nearest the divided 30degree houses to show rough locations of those signs. The constellations are not each 30deg in size. Example being Cancer or Aries, which are tiny, and Virgo which takes up half the night sky! So if that was the case, constellation astrology would have to assign different sizes for each zodiacal sign. Go and do more research on the tropical zodiac through works of Chris Brennan and see why BOTH systems can, and do, work.
