What Makes Reveille Texas’ Mascot A And M?

Reveille X, the current mascot of Texas A and M University, was officially introduced in May 2021. The retired Reveille IX joined Reveille X at the dedication ceremony for the Reveille statue outside of Kyle Field on March 3, 2023. Reveille was named the official mascot of Texas A and M when college football season came around, earning the honor of leading the marching band onto the playing field. Reveille X has been preparing for this role since February, when she began shadowing outgoing mascot Reveille IX.

The tradition of Reveille originated from a story of student rule-breaking but symbolizes Aggieland’s values, affection, and camaraderie. The sable-and-white rough collie serves as Texas A and M’s mascot and is known as the First Lady of Aggieland. Miss Rev, affectionately known on campus, is the highest-ranking member in the Corps of Cadets. When a bugler blew the morning “Reveille” to wake cadets, the dog began barking, earning her name and exposing the cadets who brought her back to Aggieland.

In September 2023, Reveille X assumed her role as the “First Lady of Aggieland” and became the official mascot of Texas A and M University. She is the highest-ranking member of the Corps of Cadets and is handled by Mascot Company E-2 of the Corps of Cadets. Reveille VII is the most traveled mascot in Texas A and M history and is often referred to as “ma’am” by the cadets.

Strict rules exist to protect the pup, and Reveille X has been preparing for this new era as Texas A and M University’s 10th mascot.

The mascot corporal is chosen from within the Corps of Cadets’ Company E-2 each spring, and Reveille lives with the cadet for that year. She goes to class, out on dates, and home for holidays, with her handler escorting her to all functions and Aggie engagements.

Reveille, the first lady of Aggieland, is the official mascot of Texas A and M University. Born in 1931, Reveille I was named after a wakeup call when a small black and white dog was hit by a bugler. She was named the following football season when she led the band onto the field during half-time performance. Reveille I passed away in 1944, and she was given a formal military funeral on the gridiron of Kyle Field. She was buried at the north entrance to the field, facing the scoreboard to watch the Aggies outscore their opponent.

Before naming Reveille II, there were several unofficial mascots, but Reveille was a full-blood Collie. The most current Reveille is Reveille VIII, introduced in August 2008. Reveille is the most revered dog on campus, and Company E-2 takes care of her. Cadets address her as “Miss Rev, ma’am”, and if she barks while a professor is teaching, the class is dismissed. What is the history of the Reveille at Tamu?

Reveille, a tradition on the University of Texas, originated in 1931 when cadets found an injured black-and-white dog on their way back from Navasota, Texas. Despite a strict no-pet policy, the Aggies snuck her into their dorm. The first Reveille roamed campus as a friend to everyone, and the official mascot corporal tradition began in 1960. Douglas Roberson, a freshman, first saw Reveille on a cold, rainy day and took her in. She was a mix of a German shepherd and a collie.

At about three months of age, she was allowed to roam campus and prance with the band practiced on the drill field. Reveille was adopted as mascot and strutted all over campus, interacting with everyone. She was always seen on the drill field, greeting the cadets as they walked across the field. An artist, Marie Haines, painted a lifelike picture of Reveille that is housed in the library. Reveille is in the hearts of thousands of Aggies, including the narrator.
