A video game mascot is a character used by video game companies to promote their specific series and franchises. These mascots can be similar to those at sporting events, with larger-than-life animals like Pikachu or Crash Bandicoot. Nintendo’s lead mascot is Mario, while Halo’s Master Chief is the face of X-Box. Sega has a lead mascot in Sonic. Sony’s inhouse development studio, Team Asobi, has created various gaming mascots, such as Kratos, Sack Boy, and Crash Bandicoot.
Crash Bandicoot, a mutant creature created by Dr. Neo Cortex, became one of the most popular and historic mascots on the PlayStation. Astro Bot, a cute and cuddly robot, stars in his own platformer game, featuring crossovers with other PlayStation characters. The main mascot of Playstation is likely Kratos, and the best-selling PS5 game will likely be God of War Ragnarok.
Sony’s current roster of mascots includes Astro and Ratchet, but this missed opportunity for the company due to the wealth of incredible IPs they have. Sony’s mascots, Kuro and Toro, were exclusive characters only on PS3 and VITA, leaving Microsoft fans wondering if they could expect a similar surprise.
Crash Bandicoot, created by Sony after Universal owned him, has established himself as a Sony mascot and an example of the quality the company can provide. Polygon Man, a god-awful monstrosity, was an early mascot that was quickly shelved. From Crash Bandicoot to Joel and Ellie, these characters have helped cement Sony’s status as a gaming giant.
