The game is not without merit, but it lacks the depth and emotional resonance that characterized earlier versions of HOMM. Some design decisions are cause for disappointment. It is hoped that the author will learn from the missteps made with the sixth iteration of the game, which was unsuccessful, but it seems unlikely.

Will there be a Might and Magic 8?

Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer is a role-playing video game in the science fantasy genre, developed for Microsoft Windows by New World Computing and released in 2000 by The 3DO Company. It is the eighth game in the Might and Magic series and received middling critical reviews, citing the game’s length and dated game engine. The game was later ported to PlayStation 2 in Japan and published by Imagineer on September 6, 2001.

Unlike the previous two games, Might and Magic VIII introduces a new party management system that allows all but one player character to be hired, dismissed, or re-hired at any time during gameplay to vary the party composition.

The character class system used in the previous two games has been overhauled, with only the Cleric and Knight classes remaining and the Sorcerer class re-tooled as Necromancers. The experience, spells, levelling, and skill system present in both previous Might and Magic titles are retained, with only minor updates.

  • I have played 3, 4 and 5. And to this day my favorite was 4. Never understood the hate towards IV. It seems super enjoyable to this day. The grind of Heroes of might and magic is so perfect, that its almost addictive. But the good thing is that everybody can find their own favorite edition. May be I should check out 6 and 7 as well.

  • I find it odd that everything after heroes 3 seems hacky and outdated to me yet 3 still feels like the most well put together. The UI and general structure of the battles just seem so perfected in homm3. Maybe it is the push towards 2.5d that throws me off but 3 still feels like the best experience to me.

  • Over the years I came to the conclusion, that HoMM5 vis the best game, not only in the series, but of all time 😉 It is pretty much Heroes 3 again, but it fixes most of what is/was wrong with 3. 1. Factions are much more balanced. 2. Factions and creatures are more unique. Every creature has multiple special abilities, as well as factions having unique skill-trees and skills. 3. Way better skill system, with way more balanced skills. Sure there still are better and worse skills and perks, but its not such as gap as like between Earth magic and eagle Eye in H3. Also more balnced magic schools. Better balance between might&magic. Pure might builds are way more viable in HoMM5 than in HoMM3. As a result there is also a way better balnce between might&magic and none (or at least less extreme) of these ridicolously OP cheese strats/builds. 4. Other interesting stuff, like Caravans, alternate Upgrades, etc. With 5.5 installed it has pretty much perfected the Heroes 3 gameplay formula and all that could be done to improve would be better graphics, more content and possibly a better UI.

  • Heroes Chronicles specifically Warriors of the Wastes and Masters of the Elements were my introduction to the series. They still remain a mainstay favorite after all these years. The experience as Tarnum was just mindblowing as a kid. Heroes IV had some cool concepts and Heroes V is definitely the second best installment in the franchise.

  • I have played all series of HoMM and never M&M series, maybe some day I will give a try one. All HOMM series were excellent. All have em proc and cons. H3 was just brilliant for the time has come and here is putting a lot of credit to developing the rest versions. Some great ideas, some bad choices but still all of them are cool to play. The most playing time belongs to h3, the best soundtrack to h4, my favourite is h5, and h6 is the most diffident by the rest. All are great and I played them from time to time all of them

  • It’s amazing how they struck gold first time around, really. First two games have all the hallmarks we grew to love in HoMM3. It just got refined so much. Timeless art style helped solidify it as an all time classic. I would argue apart from a few interesting additions in a couple of later games they all fell flat in comparison anyway.

  • 2 was a better game, but 3 had more content and a sort of its own unique atmosphere, permeating the entire game, so I perfectly understand people who prefer it. 4, for all its problems, also had its own atmosphere, even though its problems outweighed it. I dislike 5 and onward not because of their design decisions, but because they lack that unique feeling.

  • Heroes of Might and Magic 2 – 3 – 4 and also the good old; Might and Magic 6 – 7 – 8 series (The Mandate of Heaven – For Blood and Honor – Day of the Destroyer) Both game series going on in the same time periods and sharing a story, one being a Turn Based Strategy while the other a Turn Based, Open World, FPS.. All were amazing, after that point they gradually went down reaaaal fast.. New games after that point entirely lost their spirit.. they were not Heroes games anymore. Only 1 thing captured Heroes Spirit after that point and that was Paul Anthony Romero’s and his team’s music.. but even that was not enough to save those games

  • If you want to play a game that is closer to H5 but on H3 engine try out Advanced Classes Mod (on ERA platform). Your secondary skills can be leveled up to level 5 (opposed to just 3 from vanilla game) but in order to reach levels 4 and then 5 you need to specialize. If you pick generic good skills you’ll end up with a mix of warrior, mage and adventure that will max out at expert skill. If you pick every magic skill in the game (all 4 schools, wisdom, int, mystic, sorcery) you’ll be able to reach grandmaster (lv 5) rank in them AND you’ll receive “class” perks similar to the ultimate skills from heroes 5 (those that required extensive specialization). Weaker skills have been boosted significantly too. Warriors get critical strike chance in combat, mages get extra cast per turn and resist pierce, adventurers get even more movepoints and boost growth in their castles.

  • Played 3, 4 and 5 extensively. All 3 have a special place in my hearth. While I enjoy 4 the least (the hero changes were a miss imo). It was actually the first Heroes game I played and so I still love it. Then as everyone else I heard about the glory of the 3rd game, went back to check it out and. Yes it was crazy good. But when 5 came out it felt like a giant leap in terms of graphic. Some might begrudge the change in setting, but as I was too young to understand it. I didn’t mind at all. I just loved the new cinematics and 3D graphics. Well idk what the hell happened after, but it felt like every heroes game after 5 got worse not better somehow. Even in the most basic aspect that are graphics.

  • Started playing with HoMM2, played all the following numbered titles (and chronicles). For a hardcore competitive play HoMM3 is the way to go, for the story base HoMM4 and the chronicles, for refined mechanics HoMM5(.5 as the unmodded game is just a bit broken). HoMM4 can also be interesting mechanic-wise as every creature has its actual peculiarities, not just different stats, and it actually plays as a HEROES of might and magic: going around with a party of 7 heroes steamrolling everything is crazy good IMHO. HoMM6 is an attempt to casualize the game, which failed spectacularly (also always online and game breaking bugs that the developers didn’t bother to fix). HoMM7 is just bad.

  • Heroes 4 is the best imho. It has fog of war unlike its predecessors but it’s still 2D unlike its successors. Also all Heroes, except the fourth one, are too much tied up to a single hero, if you lose your best hero there’s no reason to continue the game but in Heroes 4 your heroes don’t affect strength of your army so much so you actually can have several heroes and new strategies, you can even revive your defeated hero. Heroes 4 was almost perfect I only wish they reduced dependency of army’s strength on hero’s stats little bit more.

  • I started to play with the first game and I liked it but my real love of the series was started with the second third and fourth game. Basically I played almost all the major games and there is some in this article which is not familiar to me so basically I just skipped these. I would mention one heroes game which was made by capybara games might & magic : Clash of heroes. That game is close to the heroes series and the music what they used in there also familiar but the mechanics are very different. Other than this it is nice to see this serie lived and evolved a lot and possible in the future we will see more kind of games in it. When I saw the first game as a young child I imagined the series will get a lot of sequels and I am finally was right. I would not say there is outright bad or good games in the series because each of it have added it’s charm, characters mechanics, great musics and interesting additions. That is understandable they tried to go for the 3d because many game series tried to evolve for that path simply because the market demanded it. To this day there are a lot of games which tries to catch the nostalgia factor and whole not all succeed but some did it very well.

  • I’d say HMM 2, 3 & 4 were the best ones. Each with it’s own particularites and I enjoyed all of them. HMM 5 for it was OK, but the feeling was like perusal StarWars ep 7 after I grew with ep 4(5,6) relating HMM2&3 also and a small input from HMM4, which inputed a new mechanic that didn’t cought up. But without the first one we wouldn’t comment now(2 years after the article and years from releases) and maybe some still playing it👍

  • Best homam is 4 no matter other people say. At least in latency. Problem is that game is not flash out (polished). We all know that studio went bankrupt during its development. But when you look into certain details of the game and once you see where they were going with all concepts it a shame that it not worked out for studio and of course for us. Most flash out is homam 3 and thus is most favorite and pleasant to play. Other are meh or old or bad but i give credit to old 1 & 2 their are still solid. For me all after 4 is just bad and i tried most if not all of those titles. The charm is missing and many other aspects of games are not up to usual homam standards.

  • I am really glad some love is shown there for VII. It took a lot of criticism in ratings but to me, there is so much to love! Heroes I and II won´t comment. The first one I haven´t played that much and second…was nice but since III release there was no reason to get back. III is a mastepiece, loved campaings from Armageddon´s blade. If I have to say what I don´t like about this game is that Expert Wisdom-Expert Earth Magic-Game over routine. Also too much spells and skills you like never use. (please don´t tell me your great strategy is to use remove obstacle and expert eagle eyes. 😀 ) Heroes IV has so much great to offer. Really enjoyable campaings, well written (I mean I really read those). It had so many new innovative ideas that is shame I think it´s only fourth in hours I spent with the series. To pick negative- it was nice that game offered choosing between two creatures but… like you could choose if to pick first strike Tigers or Elver for range attack but most of the times you take the same. I mean you can tell me you pick golems and mages but don´t lie to me that you ever pick ogre mages over OP cyclops. Also, getting top spells took too much levels. In most maps the game was over till you could even learn level 5 spells. Heroes V is beloved by many and it was for me too untill I realize, how few units I really use in combats. Too many creatures was so slow/initiative that you could just never really use them. So you ended winning combats by three, four creatures max.

  • I’ve played Heroes 3, 4, and 5. 3 was a masterpiece and it’s no wonder they decided to do an HD re-release… though it being owned by Ubisoft, I’m going to bet they mostly did it because they were peeved people were still playing the original and they just wanted to force a change. 4 was enjoyable, but it lacked some polish: some of the animations were awkward or janky, the town layouts were very cookie-cutter. You could tell they were cutting corners to save time and effort, and it turned out that the company was about to go bankrupt. Still ended up with an enjoyable game though, props to the people who worked on it! 5 was the first one Ubisoft did, and it had a lot of polish and was a lot of fun, but it did have some balance issues that they never fixed in a satisfying way. I can’t speak to the multiplayer, I only did single-player… so the balance changes mostly just screwed me over. Great music in all 3, though, that’s the biggest stand-out for me! Pity that Ubisoft killed off the Might and Magic series, I’ll never forgive them for that… and a lot of other awful things they’ve done. Real shame.

  • wow…. i guess i m a big fan of this series cuz i play all the way from 2, then 4 – 7 and the online and era of chaos as well…. the graphics are better than what this article portrayed them actually. I m kinda sad that somehow my pc can’t support 6-7 for whatever reason. 4 and 5 holds the most special place in my heart….. for music wise…. 4 is the best to me for graphic and my personal gaming experience… 5 is the one i m most fond of…. especially the phoenix i like 6 for the water town though…

  • heroes of might and magic 2 was (and still is) a cornerstone in turn based strategy. heroes of might and magic 3 even increased the quality in every way. after that, it declined, declined, declined and now it’s long dead. 2 and 3 can be still played with lots of perfect mods make the games even more beautiful. even they can be played without mods.

  • Unfortunately graphics-wise, the games after 3 fall into the same trap as many games did when it came to transition from 2.5D to real 3D graphics: In order for the artists to show off a lot of detail, the 3D graphics are much more zoomed, which greatly reduces the overall overview. This is particularly evident in the adventure map view – HOMM2 and HOMM3 provided a very good strategic overview of the adventure map, while I always struggled with the tiny viewport you get in 4 and 5. The maps are overall also smaller. The extra details may look nice, but at a price in terms of gameplay…

  • The evolution stopped with 3. Dunno who made IV but it was very buggy. Never got into playing it. Homm V is definitely made by other company. And I didn’t like it. Today I prefer Fheroes2. But back then Homm 1 was my favorite. It’s simple, straight to the point. Homm 2 tried to make it better but failed to release a stable version. Fheroes2 fixed it all what 3DO botchered. Fheroes2 feels like a new game. Homm 3 is also good, but for me it’s not simple and not really my style.

  • Heroes 2 and 4 have the best music by far. 2 is very nostalgic and classic, so it will always have a special place in my heart. 3 maybe has the best gameplay, but the music for me is very averagely. If you play 4 and then 3, 3 cannot stand it´s ground, 5 is much better. Also because the “heroes” before 4 are no heroes, but gods. But the franchise is HEROES of might and magic. Heroes 4 took is seriously and it makes much more sense. I think H6 has it´s advantages. To convert foreign factions makes sense, because when you conquer foreign cultures, you also convert it into yours. History proves it. H1 is charming, but minimalistic. H7 is woke and doesn´t count for me.

  • Homm 2 = splendid for its time and still super nostalgic for today. Homm 3 = a masterpiece for its time and still to this day Homm 4 = a interesting take on the game, a solid game with a lot of fun Homm 5 = superb game Homm 6 = surprisingly very enjoyable game Homm 7 – never touched it and never will My Ranking: 1. Homm 3 2. Homm 5 3. Homm 6 4. Homm 4 5. Homm 2 But for be the rankings do not matter, ALL of them ( excluded the last title ) are must played games

  • I find the game mechanics beautiful, regardless of which part I play. I’ve played all Heroes 1-7, omitting only a few expansions. Recently, I started playing from H1, all campaigns, but this time I decided to put the longplays on YT: youtube.com/@allheroesgameplay/playlists. H1 misses some scenarios which I will add later. I also sing in the Heroes Orchestra choir: youtube.com/@HeroesOrchestra Of course, H3 is iconic, but I enjoy all the other parts the same! 🙂
