How To Strengthen Dragon Spells With Elden Ring?

The Elden Ring Dragon Incantations Guide focuses on the use of Dragon Communion spells and the use of Rock Heart to boost damage. The Dragon Communion Seal provides a 15 boost in damage for most Dragon Communion Incantations, while the Roar Medallion boosts damage of breath and roar-based Incantations by 10 (5 in PvP). The Dragon Communion Seal scales off arcane and boosts dragon communion, allowing players to maximize damage.

How to increase the strength of incantations?

Incant Scaling is a stat exclusive to Sacred Seals that increases the damage caused by Incantations cast by the seal used. Tarnished players must meet the required attribute stats to wield the weapon, while exceeding the Faith requirement increases the Incant Scaling of the seal used. Incant Scaling can be increased by upgrading sacred seals. It only affects the damage or healing of incantations cast by the seal and does not affect the duration of buffs or other incantations.

Incantations that heal over time do not benefit from Incant Scaling. For Healing and Weapon Buff incantations, only the portion of the Scaling from Faith counts, making hybrid seals weaker for casting these spells.

What is the best spell for killing dragons in Elden Ring?

Faith-focused spellcasters have several options for eliminating dragons, but only a few good options for breaking their stance. The Beast Incantation Bestial Sling is an excellent early option, dealing reasonable damage and chipping away with poise damage until the dragon’s stance breaks. Stone of Gurranq is better at dealing poise damage than Bestial Sling. Flame of Frenzy incantation is also useful for Frenzy Incantations, dealing tons of poise damage when fired from underneath the dragon.

Pest-Thread Spears, available from the DLC, are a potent option for Faith builds, aiming at the dragon’s body and dealing damage multiple times. Pest Threads Incantation can serve the same purpose during the Base Game, though not as effectively. Equipping the Stonebarb Cracked Tear in the Physik Flask is recommended to boost poise damage when trying to break the enemy’s stance.

How much arcane for dragon incantations?

Bayle’s Tyranny is a powerful roar that stuns enemies and deals heavy fire damage. To use the Dragon Communion Incantation, players must defeat Bayle the Dread boss in Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and use the Heart of Bayle at the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion. This defeat rewards one heart, which can only be used to get one of the two available Incantations. Agheel’s Flame is also available after defeating a specific dragon, the Dragon Agheel in Elden Ring, which is less difficult than some dragons encountered in the game.

Is there a way to make spells stronger in Elden Ring?

The process of spell upgrading entails the enhancement of both the casting tool and the relevant statistics associated with the spell in question. These statistics are subject to scaling in accordance with three key variables: damage, FP consumption, and casting speed. It should be noted that similar spells, such as Glintstone Shard and Swift Glintstone Shard, may have different versions.

Understanding the Elden Ring stats and attributes is crucial for surviving the game. These stats determine a character’s damage, toughness, and spellcasting power. To maximize your character’s stats, focus on boosting Strength, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane, and Dexterity. The game doesn’t favor a jack-of-all-trades approach, but rather focuses on boosting select stats and building a playstyle around them.

Leveling up in Elden Ring is based on its stats, especially with the Larval Tears system. Recreating your character is not easy, so understanding Vigor’s function and deciding if Intelligence is better than Faith or Arcane for a magic build is essential. • A few extra cool things not mentioned in the article: a) All the dragon breath incantations reach SUPER FAR b) If you dismount while moving to jump off the horse you can start casting the named dragon breath incantations from higher up, avoiding more attacks c) The unnamed dragon breath incantations can be cast from horseback, so having both named and unnamed incantations is good

  • I hope that some day we get an actual Dragon Transformation that buffs the Dragon Communion stuff further. When Yura warned me about becomming a Dragon I instantly sought out every Dragon in the game. Whenever I got a new Dragon Heart I instantly went back to the Cathedral to see if something would happen. But nothing (except for gold and black eyes)…

  • What I like about Faith and the incantations in Elden Ring is it allows you to take advantage of any damage type. Faith itself gives you access to holy, fire, lightning, and poison damage through incantations and weapons. The dragon incantations specifically allow you to do magic damage and apply the two status of frost or scarlet rot. And of course almost all of the faith weapons deal decent amounts of physical damage with their elemental damages as well.

  • Btw why don’t the malformed sentinel or dragon knight armor boost dragon incant? I mean, i know they’re strong, but since the talisman for roar!/breath attacks doesn’t do anything except for AOWs…. So the only apparel item that boosts it, is the mushroom crown and you need to use rot/ezykel breath. Also, dunno if anyone tried it, but terra magicka buffs magic breath, flame grant me strength for flame, not sure about borealis/frost mist and ranni’s hat

  • It seems like the seals that boost something by 20% are also about 20% less base spell power than the best seal with no boost so wouldn’t that just be a wash? The non boosted would be better even because it’s basically boosting every spell. I guess 40% power stancing would be better but I honestly don’t like power stancing incants. I like to have a shield in my off hand.

  • Good boys! Finally covering my main character play style for elden ring! Summon a distraction, ( or go full Double Dragon with a mimic) Frost Breath and Greyall’s Roar to nuke the boss’s defenses and nerf their damage, then absolutely delete them with the glinstone breath. Even without the magic scorpion charm (It was my blind playthrough and Seluvis is a asshole) or Tera Magika you can near effortlessly destroy bosses. Hell half the time the only damage amps I run are the damage boost from the flask and the ritual sword talisman, and I still brute forced my way through the game on my first run. The sweet spot for damage if you’re trying to min/max is about 40 faith and 60 arcane, achieved however you wish. There are plenty of stat boosting items in the game if that’s your jam. I’m going to have to steal that fashion though. I’ve been running around in a mix of margit’s rags and shaman gear looking like a dragon druid hobo for nearly the last two months :/ Edit: As a dragon communion main, I cannot stress enough how beneficial it is to get used to free aiming your breath weapons. You can cover an absurd area with the damage flavor of your choice using them, or even catch out people in PvP with a quick 180. Your character is locked in place for the cast however the camera, and thus the spells aim, is not.

  • i’m guessing the hype around the dragon incantations appeared in the last couple of days on reddit as you guys and fextralife both put out your twists on dragon based builds today, personally i would be interested in seeing if you can make a decent dragon melee build with the grafted dragon fist weapons combined with the dragonclaw and dragonmaw incantations 🙂

  • ok…. 4:38 “dragon seals” should not have made me laugh as hard as it did. This website needs to stop catching me off guard with its off the wall humor. First the “mushrooms” from the poison is op article and now this 😂😂😂 Without a doubt the most entertaining website I tune into for Elden Ring content.

  • This isn’t a secret. Syrobe made a article about this a month ago. These breaths absolutely melt everything because most things have poor magic and frost resistance. For those that want to run dragon breaths, rot breath is kinda than it’s named counter part since it does similar damage, procs rot at the same rate, costs less, and it has better range but lesser AoE. And frankly, if you’re running borealis mist and Smarag’s Glintstone Breath, you REALLY don’t need the extra damage. Smarag’s, with no buffs, 49 faith, 44 arcane, and a plus 10 dragon communion seal, I’m doing 5k plus damage easy. Stack that with golden vow after hitting them with Borealis for that 20% damage reduction and it just takes ridiculous chunks out of bosses health.

  • I’ve been on this since day 1, but always get hate for apparently cheating by using the dragon and lightning incants, use the dragon incamts with the bolt of gransasx and magma wyrm sword as my weapons love the dragon paw and maw too the paw is insane especially in pvp if you don’t get the first one off the seccond almost always catches people off guard and can 1 shot most people along as theyre around 1500 health

  • Tbh these not that much of secret ppl just to don’t use the other spells I been using them for awhile pvp and pve and basically ….. with other spells added on to the build I use the basic ones tbh just you need high Mind with a dragon build tho no what spell you use tho….lore wise there power isn’t meant for any other living beings

  • I’d like to think, that you don’t become a dragon. I actually think you’re summoning them from inside your soul, because you consumed their hearts. That woukd explain for example, why you don’t need any int to do the glintstonebreath, because the dragin does it for you. You summon them forming new flesh every time and give it life which is why you need arcane energy (blood and flesh) and faith (reanimating the created flesh to life)

  • I would like to point out, for most players and situations, the lesser variants of each breath attack are better for doing status damage, while the boss variation of each breath attack is better for doing base damage. if you’re doing regular play throughs and have 30 or less mind, i’d recommend not using the boss variants for your playthrough.

  • i guess it probably wont work with your setup ( i dont think you can put an ash of war on the seals?), but i use the ash of war endure on my main hand with a sword and a seal in my offhand. use endure right before a cast for poise casting like unfaltering prayer for ds3. it doesnt last long enough for the second breath but it seems to work for me on the first cast of any spell

  • I’m curious exactly how much the % damage boost of the seals attacks against incantation scaling. I have a faith/int build that this combo would be perfect for, however I use a golden order seal with an 80 int/50 faith split and get crazy scaling off the seal. Do you think it would yield similar results if I used my golden order seal while off handing a dragon seal?

  • lol, late to the party. And the fact that you still think the other breaths are worthless shows that people still don’t know about dragon breaths. There’s quite a lot you missed in fully optimizing dragon breath: 1. The spell-boosting talismans (flock for incantations and graven for sorcery) are actually the weakest in their class. You can get a significantly bigger boost for that slot by combining rot exultation, mushroom crown, and the rot breath proc to activate the double stacked exultation buffs on that setup. Not that it really matters since the base level of damage on dragon breaths generally — not Smarag’s alone but all of them across the board — is that high that you won’t really notice. 2. While terra magica’ed Smarag is the absolute strongest in a vacuum, there’s plenty of situations where you can get more damage with the other breaths. Magic resistance > fire happens more often than you’d think, and the fact that rot breath does physical damage means that it can quite frequently be the strongest breath in the roster. Both rot and fire breaths are boosted by Flame Grant Me Strength, which grants you a much more mobile max-out buff than Terra Magica, and Agheel’s breath can utilize a scorpion charm too to hit pound for pound the exact same number of boosts as the magic damage setup. 3. Speaking of which, this level of damage isn’t a unique property of the magic and ice breaths aside from them having technically the highest motion value (by a hair when comparing base to base, roughly a 9 to 10 ratio for Agheel’s vs Smarag’s, and then actually bothering to learn that you can swap in fire scorpion and Flame Grant Me Strength gives you a massive erdtree avatar and tree spirit killer).

  • DS2 dragon form looked the coolest with that armor, but this is also nice. It’s a shame your poise sucks because no armor. But we can’t have them all. Anyway, looking forward to the dragon priestess too. And maybe the carrian sorcery sword. Spellcasting without a staff. Can shield and skewer stuff xD

  • Need this for reference, running a death knight/dragon communion build rolls most things, finally have a viable ancient dragon build, really good Lgtn dmg with death knight twin axe/halfshaft, Physical dragon incants for anything resistant. ×2 Eclipse shotel for more dmg variety. Dragon com seal slaps everthing in the face and isnt outdone by alot next to other seals, game is bugged and cant get gravel seal 😭

  • Hey Fextralife… Question, can you do a Dragon of St Trina Build, focusing on a Dual typing of St Trina (sleep mainly) and Dragon Communion build for someone to use working from start of the game to dlc and then to true end game? I am runnng a dragon build with the sword and damn if it doesn’t buy me time for some of the heavier attacks to get a full charge off with… (Dragon claw for some reason deals damage like a Critical Attack when they sleep) but since I just modified Dragon Preist, was curious on what you thought a fully devoted St Trina’s Dragon build might end up being and going through?

  • @fextralife hey man I wanted to tell someone who can pass it on to most people and you came to mind. The scadutree is using the old English SC sounds which is more than easy enough to confirm if you feel the need by looking up “old English SC” but it’s sound like a SH for us in new English thus the tree is not “skah doo ” it’s just shadow tree. I was an English an lit major in college which not many people are so I may be in a minority of people that actually realize that the scadutree is sounded out like shadow tree. Again feel free to look it up using old English sounds

  • Hell yeah! Love the article! I was looking for a article like this yesterday and when i couldn’t find one, I went and made my own article and uploaded it. My damage numbers where higher tho, I believe I saw 8k damage for dragonmaw alone with high faith and arcane. but i love your articles so much, i definitely love it when the real pros at Fextralife put out articles.

  • Hey man, thanks! I remember when I first got the game when it first came out I was excited because I heard about the dragon stuff. I tried the dragon priest build that you made a couple years ago and had a lot of fun with it. This one though… this is awesome. Only difference with me is I use bloody helice for melee. This build slaps though, Messmer got clapped on my 3rd try. 👍

  • @fextralife hey! Can you explain why cast with eldtree seal over dragon seal when the Dragon seal has a higher incant scaling? Is this something that recently changed before the article? Or am I missing some thing. Thanks man! Not trying to question you. I’m genuinely curious. Currently in dragon form Dragon seal 388 Erdseal 353. Does the holy attack power weigh in? This might be a dumb question now that I’m mathing it.

  • I ended up creating this and mixing it with your beast claw build for that maximum dragon feel. Blue dancer charm, shard of Alexander, rotten winged sword insignia and lord of bloods exultation w beast claws set to occult. Dragon communion in offhand and using rock heart. Dragon incants for long breaks in boss moveset and spam ash of war for everything else

  • The Caveat to this build is ZERO POISE… You are Basically stuck with using DragonMaw for the Hyper-Armor protection… all others you are vulnerable to having your attacks broken. FS should patch ALL Dragon Communion incantations with Hyper-Armor…. This build is good in certain situations but not as a Main Build.

  • Been waiting on this build since I got the Rock Heart, I feel like I got close on my own to making a good version but I wanted to see what other people were doing. And honestly, Poise isn’t a major downside PVE if you’re in the DLC, because I’ve been having Poise as high as 60 not matter on basic dlc enemies and their basic attacks. Even with solid +#s of Fragments and Revered Ashes. It is worth pointing out however, that if you play with summons you won’t get a Dragonman Mimic, you’ll get a Nakedman Mimic. SO hopefully you have Tiche, Bloodfiend Hexer (combos great with blood builds), or another tanky or dodgey summons leveled.

  • Few thoughts I get that talismans are situational for this build but isn’t it better to have Flock’s Canvas and the new Finger one for faster casting on all the time over blue dancer & the crusade? That’s flat damage over ramp up plus fast cast idk the numbers…Also if statuses are basically guaranteed a frost breath is a most no?🤷🏾‍♂️,the new throwing spear has a faith fire setup so easy resets r mayb the Euporia twin blade agen for the faith side

  • It’s obviously a pretty significant investment but you’re presumably high lvl going into the dlc so it’s worth noting that the dragon communion seal has higher potential scaling than thr erdtree seal but that’s only at 80 faith and 80 arcane. I don’t know exactly when it overtakes it but at 80 in both is 35 higher than erdtree.

  • This is one of the two best arcane builds IMHO. Clarification to your commentary: the Dragon Communion Seal is a very close second in incant scaling, so there is little benefit in buffing something like the Eardtree Seal, casting with it, and off handing the Dragon Communion Seal. I’m in NG+ and I cast with DC seal and also hold a second one in the off hand for the buff. If playing for DC incants it is superior to minimize faith and maximize dex (behind arcane, of course, which should eventually go all the way to 80), because the DC seal scales so well off of arcane, the faith is minimally important, and the dex scaling on the typical status application types of weapons you will want to use is more beneficial than the faith. I am running beast claws. The other Arcane build goes Arcane, then faith, then minimal dex or strength depending on which weapons you use. Main hand DC seal. Off hand the Gravel Stone seal and mainline Dragon Cult incants. I choose the Death Knight Armor set over the Priestess Heart because the extra damage from the Preistess Heart usually comes at the expense of slotting a defensive talisman instead of an offensive one. This makes it a wash between the DK armor or the PH, and the PH looks dumb so… Long story short if you want powerful incants with arcane you can either go Dragon Cult with Arcane>Faith>strength/dex… or you can go Dragon Communion with Arcane>Dex>Faith.

  • I did some quick math with this form, and this is what I realized. So, Dragon Communion Seal increases the power of Dragon Communion Incantations by 15% and with two that bonus increases to 30%. Add the Roar Medallion’s additional 10% for roars and breaths increases that to 40%, and finally the Rock Heart’s buff to Dragon Communion Incantations gives you a juicy 20% increase and the total is a nasty 60%! Now that’s a lot of damage! And even in PvP, that’s still a 55% boost to your Dragon Communion Incantations which is not insignificant. And if you really want to do more, slap on the Flock’s Canvas Talisman which adds an additional 8% boost to all Incantations and that comes out to 68% in PvE, and 63% in PvP.

  • Ok so either the information in this vid is wrong or on the wiki. The wiki says the dragon form specifically buffs dragon cult incantations. However in the article you say it buffs dragon communion incantations. Now it might buff both but in that case that info is missing on the wiki. If it just buffs cult incantations, then half of the information in this vid should be wrong?! Or are cult and communion incantations both considered to be the same thing?!

  • I love how he does the usual BS again. Instead of sticking to the THEME of the build and instead of just learning how to utilize Greyoll’s Roar for damage reduction / damage, he just shoehorns in Golden Vow yet again, which is still an ERDTREE incantation and has nothing to do with DRAGONS! What is the point of having a THEME if he himself refuses to follow it?!
