Islamic Death Rites: What Are They?

In Islam, post-death rituals differ from Western funerals, which involve coffin burial or cremation. Key points include maintaining a deathbed vigil, inviting the imam for advice on prayers and rituals, placing the bed facing Mecca where possible, encouraging daily prayers, and providing clean stones for symbolic purposes.

Muslims believe in an afterlife and that once an individual’s soul is freed from the physical body, they await a reckoning. At a Muslim funeral, mourners congregate at the mosque and recite the Islamic funeral prayer, Ṣalāt al-Janāzah, which sees pardon for the deceased. Muslim funeral rites are led by an Islamic leader, known as an imam, and usually last from 30 to 60 minutes.

Islam provides instructions for the dying, those present at the time of death, and those responsible for burying the deceased individual. The Quran states that “everyone shall taste death”. Muslims are always buried, never cremated, and it is a religious requirement that the body be ritually washed and draped before burial. Those carrying out this duty should be immunized against hepatitis B and be aware of the hazards of AIDS.

Common Islamic burial rituals include bathing the body, shrouding, funeral prayer, burial, and mourning directives for widows. Funeral prayers are led by the Imam, with attendees forming at least three lines: men, then children, and women in the back. After the body is shrouded, mourners pray over the body, close their eyes, bind the jaw, and cover the body with a clean sheet.

In conclusion, Islamic death rituals include maintaining a deathbed vigil, inviting the imam for advice on prayers and rituals, placing the bed facing Mecca, and entrusting personal care to family members.

Why 40 days after death in Islam?

The 40th day of death in Islam marks the end of a formal grieving period, where families pray for the dead and ask for pardon and kindness. This act of charity, often carried out in the deceased’s name, reflects the Islamic belief that good deeds should continue after death. The 40 days also represent a period of introspection for the living, guiding them towards faith-based peace and helping them process their loss.

These death rituals underline the universal human desire to honor the dead and support the soul on its journey through the afterlife. The 40-day mourning period in the Bible and other religious texts emphasizes the importance of this time in determining the soul’s fate.

Can husband touch wife after death in Islam?

The Nikah ends when a wife’s death occurs, and a husband cannot perform the Ghusl or touch her body without a barrier. This is because the permissibility of touching and giving Ghusl has also ended. Other matters, such as looking at her face, shouldering her bier, and lowering her into the grave, are permitted. The famous statement that a husband cannot carry the funeral bier or lower her into the grave or look at her face is incorrect and baseless, as they have no basis in the Shari’ah.

What happens to the soul immediately after death in Islam?

After death, most Muslims believe that the soul will enter Barzakh, a state of waiting, until the Day of Judgement.

  • When a person dies, their soul is taken by Azra’il, the Angel of Death.
  • God sends two angels to question the waiting soul.
  • If the questions are answered correctly, the good soul then sleeps during Barzakh.
  • If the questions are not answered correctly, the soul is tormented by angels, known as punishment of the grave.

Muslims believe they get to Paradise by living religiously, asking Allah for forgiveness and showing good actions in their life. These good actions will be rewarded on the Last Day. Therefore, obeying the rules set by Allah is of ultimate importance.

Muslims believe there are seven levels of Heaven, although “seven” is interpreted by some Muslims as simply “many”. Each Heaven is made of a different material, and a different lives in each Heaven. The first Heaven is made of silver and is where Adam and Eve live. Abraham lives in the seventh Heaven in a place made of divine light.

Why do Muslims wait 40 days after death?

The imam explains that the soul is separated from the body during death, but it lives on and visits loved ones on the seventh and 40th days after death, as well as one year later. The soul expects a gift from the family, and the greatest gift one can give to the deceased is doing a good deed on their behalf. In Islamic tradition, burying the body immediately after a person’s death is considered a sign of respect.

How many days are Muslim death rituals?

Muslims believe in a physical resurrection on Judgement Day, prohibiting cremation and autopsies. They also prefer not to move the body away from the site of death, making autopsies unsettling. Embalming is performed only if required by law. After the burial, flowers are sent to the family’s home, and a 40-day mourning period is observed. Mourners at an Islamic funeral may express grief within certain standards of decorum, such as not wailing loudly or exhibiting extreme emotion. Crying is allowed, and traditional Muslim funeral etiquette forbids taking pictures or recording any part of the funeral prayer service.

What should a non-Muslim do at a Muslim funeral?

At a Muslim funeral, it is a significant spiritual community event where both men and women remove their shoes at the mosque door and sit on the floor in separate areas. Following the funeral, it is customary to visit the immediate family home to show support and condolences. The funeral typically includes a meal and modest attire, with men wearing plain shirt and pants, women wearing long sleeves and a high neck, and clean socks.

During the 40-day mourning period after the burial, it is appropriate to send flowers and food, following Islamic dietary restrictions. If you’re unsure what to send, consider ordering a Halal Gift Basket.

Do Muslims have to be buried within 24 hours?

Imam Dr Abduljalil Sajid, chairman of the Muslim Council for Religious and Racial Harmony in the UK, states that a person should be buried as soon as possible after death, usually within 24 hours. This delay is partly due to poor hygiene conditions and to protect the living from sanitary issues. However, Dr Sajid acknowledges that it is acceptable to delay a Muslim burial if the person has not died from natural causes.

  • I am Muslim but converted. I knew of the washing and shroud, but had wanted to know about the prayers and service of grave. Thank you so much for this insight. We lost our Mosque in 2018 to Hurricane Michael. A lot of our community left so we only have a handful rebuilding it. Salaam Alaikum and may the love of Prophet Mohammad teachings to us remind us Allah is the one that takes care of us.

  • At 19, I already memorised almost all the procedures from my grandfathers, cousin and my own dad’s funerals. Death really taught me many things and one thing for sure, we have to always be ready because death will come anytime and when the time comes, we can only leave it to Him. Al-Fatihah to all of our family and friends who are no longer with us. Have a nice day 🙂

  • Many years ago, Eunos and myself were on a wedding trip in KL. We walked under the hot sun. Tired and sweaty, we rested at a mosque. Eunos decided to bathe and asked the mosque keeper is there a bath-room. He shook his head and pointed to a long trough of water. Eunos asked me whether i am afraid to bathe in this water. Firmly shook my head i am not. Bodily cooled and blessed water for bathing the Muslim corpses for burial. This is once in my lifetime unforgettable experience. Salam!

  • Please make dua for me brothers and sisters. After my.husband told me last night that I should do istakhara for our marriage whether i should take divorce from him or live with him. Till now I had this little hope in my heart that one day my husband will also love me but after hearing this it broke me into pieces, I am totally shattered. So I thought that i should do istakhara and let the divorce take place if that’s better for me and my daughter…and I should prepare for hereafter watch some funerals eye opening messages that we as a muslim should prepare for. And yeah that’s it atleast if I can get to fix my prayer… maybe Allah can forgive me please make dua for me everyone.

  • This is a very informative article. I truly appreciate what you’re doing to educate young and curious Muslims. However, may I correct the question that the two angels asks Muslims, which are who’s your lord, who’s your prophet, and what’s your religion? The other questions that are mentioned about Imam and brothers and sisters are not valid. Nonetheless, scholars have a very important role in Islam.

  • Human Souls Journey After Death In Islam Imagine yourself at the moment of your death. What thoughts cross your mind? Memories of family and friends? Panic? Regrets? Remembrance of Allah SWT (God)? What is death? What happens to us after we die? What is life in the Hereafter like, this new and strange world after death? Do we lose consciousness of this life? Where does our soul go? Do we feel and think the same? The ineffable feeling of crossing the boundary between this world and the next cannot be described in words, nor imagined in the mind, but can be understood only through divine revealation and inspiration. Let us for the next few moments seek an understanding of this, death, the only certainty in life. Sometimes we may not want to know about the processes that occur after we die because we are afraid or don’t want to think about it. However, this is not the attitude of a Muslim. We should be foremost in learning and understanding death, so we can live our lives accordingly. The prophet (saw) said, “Live in this world as though you are a stranger or a traveler (passing through it).” (Muslim) We are on a journey and should know about the whole journey’s itinerary, not just one part. Death is inevitable. It is the one thing that we can be certain about in life. We are born to die. Every soul shall have a taste of death no matter who they are. This is confirmed for us many times in the Quran: “Every soul shall have a taste of death: and only on the Day of Judgement shall you be paid your full recompense.

  • Just like to share with you all with my experience,l used to be be a cab driver and one day l have received a job to pick up a passenger from Yishun to the Muslim Cemetery through and back.honestly In my life I have never been to the Muslim cemetery before and when l pick up my passenger and I can only tell them l don’t know where’s the Muslim cemetery and I have to asked them to tell me how to get there, lucky the family help me to get there and asked me to wait for them until they have their prayers and send them back home. Notes 1 One of the many practices taught by Islam is that its followers should begin their activities in the name of God. This principle, if consciously and earnestly followed, will necessarily yield three beneficial results. First, one will be able to restrain oneself from many misdeed, since the habit of pronouncing the name of God is bound to make one wonder when about to commit some offence how such an act can be reconciled with the saying of God’s holy name. Second, if a man pronounces the name of God before starting good and legitimate tasks, this act will ensue that both his starting point and his mental orientation are sound. Third – and this is the most important benefit – when a man begins something by pronouncing God’s name, he will enjoy God’s support and succour; God will bless his efforts and protect him from the machinations and temptation of Satan.

  • There are no authentic narrations in favor of Talqin to the dead. Therefore, it is not permissible to do so. However, urging someone dying to say: “La ilaha illa Allah” by making him repeat it after a person who says it is permissible. It is permissible to do so in order that the last words the dying person utters is La ilaha illa Allah. Inshallah may Allah guide us.

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? • 1:14 this is not true, it was not mentioned in quran or sunnah if you die and your eyes open it means its a good sign rather the Prophet said in this hadith : “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon Abu Salamah (after he had died), and his eyes were wide open. He closed his eyes, then he said: ‘When the soul is taken, the sight follows it.’” Reference : Sunan Ibn Majah 1454 Which means The sight follows the soul trying to see where it goes,
