What Are The Islamic Customs Around Death?

The Ghusl Mayyit (Washing the Dead Body) method is a crucial aspect of Islamic burial rituals, which are performed by Muslims at the end of life. Muslims are always buried, never cremated, and it is a religious requirement that the body be ritually washed and draped before burial. This process should be carried out as soon as possible after death.

In addition to the burial rituals, Muslims also perform other rituals such as bathing the body, shrouding, praying, and condoling. These rituals are part of the Hanafi Fiqh and are followed by the widow and heirs after the death. The soul after death is considered a test of faith in Islam, and those carrying out this duty should be immunized against hepatitis B and aware of the hazards of AIDS.

Common Islamic burial rituals include bathing the body, shrouding, funeral prayer, burial mourning, and directives for widows. The body is then transported to the grave, where it is washed and covered with a sheet by family members. The funeral prayer or Salatul Janazah is an important part of these rituals, and even Muslims who are not close to the deceased or the family can participate.

A Muslim funeral is an act of worship and remembrance held in the days following a death, which may include prayers, sermons, Quran recitations, and a memorial consisting of prayer and donations to charity. After a person dies, they close their eyes, bind their jaw, and cover the body with a clean sheet. Prescribed burial rituals include bathing the body, wrapping it in white cotton or linen cloth, and reciting Salat al-Janazah.

Why should we not cry when someone dies in Islam?

Islam is a religion with strict rules guiding crying over a dead person, with wailing and lamenting considered haram and punishable by punishment. The religion has two sects, Sunni and Shi’a, with slightly different traditions but believing in another life after death. Before death, family members and friends encourage a person to proclaim that there is no God besides Allah (shahada), which grants access to paradise (Jannah).

If the person refuses to say the shahada, they will go to hell (Jahannam). When the person passes, the people present say “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un”, meaning they belong to Allah and will return.

What do Muslims do when a family member dies?

The local Muslim community holds a funeral prayer called Salaatul Janaazah for the deceased, asking for God’s mercy and blessings. Muslims do not allow cremation and place the shrouded body directly in the earth, facing Makkah when turned on its right side. Bereavement is expected, and family and relatives are advised not to be overly demonstrative. Healthcare settings can help ease the minds of loved ones by respecting religious norms and allowing the body to be collected for washing and burial quickly.

What happens on the 3rd day after death in Islam?

Islamic mourning periods vary depending on the relationship with the deceased. The general mourning period is three days, with families staying together and receiving guests to express condolences and prayers. The immediate family’s responsibilities are kept to a minimum, while the community takes care of the family’s basic needs, including providing meals and nourishment. Extended periods may be necessary due to unusual circumstances or relatives traveling far.

Witches are expected to stay in an extended mourning period of four lunar months and ten days, staying at home and limiting their involvement with the outside world. While it is permissible for them to leave the house for special needs, their activities should be kept to a humble, somber spirit and avoid contact with potential marriage candidates.

Can the dead hear us in Islam?

Ibn Taymiyya confirmed that the dead can hear the living, citing numerous text proofs. He also explained that greetings to the dead are addressed to those who can hear, and only those who can hear can receive them. Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr recounted a Prophet who said that no one sends salutations to a fellow believer’s grave unless the deceased recognizes them and responds to their salutation. The Prophet also instructed his Companions to invoke greetings and blessings upon him on Fridays and the eve of Fridays, but they questioned how they could be sent to the Prophet, as God has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of prophets.

What comes after death in Islam?

Muslims believe that after death, the soul enters Barzakh, a state of waiting until the Day of Judgement. The soul is taken by Azra’il, the Angel of Death, and God sends two angels to question it. If the questions are answered correctly, the good soul sleeps during Barzakh, while if not, it is tormented. To reach Paradise, Muslims must live religiously, ask Allah for forgiveness, and show good actions. Good actions will be rewarded on the Last Day.

There are seven levels of Heaven, each with a different material and life. The first Heaven is made of silver, where Adam and Eve lived, while Abraham lives in the seventh Heaven, made of divine light.

What happens after death in Islam step by step?

After burial, each person is interrogated by two angels, Munkar and Nakir, appointed by God to test their faith. Righteous believers answer correctly and live in peace, while sinners and disbelievers fail and face punishments. The veil between the living and the realm of symbols is lifted after biological death, but before that, the dying person can see angels and devils. Devils, sent by Iblis (Satan), persuade the deceased to abandon Islam and become an unbeliever. They are driven away by Jibrail (Gabriel) and the angels of mercy.

The fate of the dying depends on whether they are believers or unbelievers. Depending on the state of the soul, the deceased will undergo different journeys. When a righteous believer dies, bright-faced angels from heaven descend with divine perfume and shroud, and the angels of death come, telling the soul to come out to the pleasure and mercy of God. The soul is extracted as easily as water comes out from the pitcher, wrapped in a perfumed shroud, and taken up to the seventh heaven. God declares that God will write down their name in illiyin and take them back to earth. If the soul succeeds in answering questions, they are blessed with heavenly rewards.

Sinners or disbelievers meet the Angels of hell (Zabaniyya) and are told to come out to the wrath of God. The soul is then taken away painfully, wrapped in a dirty cloth, and carried towards heaven. Other angels inquire about the soul, and they are told it is the soul of that person. The soul is then thrown into hell or the underworld, where it is punished until the Day of Judgment.

What three things remain after death in Islam?

The hadith posits that following a person’s demise, their virtuous actions cease, with the exception of three: uninterrupted charity, beneficial knowledge, and a pious child who prays for them. This suggests that we can still perform benevolent acts on their behalf.

  • My mother passed away 2days ago, she was ill for last few years. May allah-subahna watalah forgives her sins and grant her a place in jannatul firdous..May Allah guide those who are here to righteous path and forgive all our sins and give us the strength to stay away from bad deeds..May Allah grant us all a place in jannatul firdous

  • Only Allah judges. The test is over when we die. to be asked after death contradicts the Quran, life is the test and being asked by angles is a test, makes no sense. Also, death is separation of body and soul, soul wont be under ground. Allah says you did this and you go here. That is judgment. This is my take on it you dont have to believe.

  • How do these people know what will happen after death? No one who has died has come back to tell what happens after death. The only thing that any of us can know about what happens after death is from whatever the Quran states what will happen. Anything else is speculation. The Quran says that even prophet Muhammad(saw) didn’t know what is going to happen to himself or anyone else after death. Read the Quran 46:9 and 6:50.

  • eikh abu bakr zoud is saying when u die your soul is taken up to heaven after this it is returned to the grave to answer the 3 questions after this THE SOUL IS TAKEN UP TO HEAVEN AND LUVES THERE AS A BIRD!!…..am very confused as other scholars say after the 3 questions we remain in the grave until the day of resurection…..can someone please explain this point…..abu bakr zoud lecture on death where he mentions this is also on you tube……so which if this 2 points is the correct one …..do we stay in the grave until the day of resurection after answering the 3 questions or are we taken bk up to heaven and live there in the form of a bird until the day of resurection….and if the latter is true i thought nobody enters heaven until the day of resurrection……apart from the true martys …..what is the case for the average person does he stay in the grave or is he living in heaven as a bird until the day of ressurection?

  • I just saw this article, and I’m not your condescending nobody or pass judgment. God give us free will to believe what you want to believe that God said it is appointed to man once to die and after that here come the judgment, there is no repentance in the grave, Jesus said he is the only way to get to God. He’s a resurrection and the life that book will be open one day, and if your name do not find it written in the book of life, the Bible said you will will punish eternity, thank God for his grace and mercy, I pray for all people and Muslim to come to know Jesus and all the rest of religions for God, so loved the world that he gave us his only begotten son, that whosoever believe it in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. He send not son into the world to condemn world but through him we must be save love all people pray for people that they may come to know Jesus Christ the savior of the world people take time out the Bible been fulfilling, but most people don’t know that Jesus Christ fulfill all the prophecies that written about him from the Old Testament one love people

  • According to them punishments or rewards will start before your judgment whether you will go to paradise or hell. So ridiculous!!!! Those who didn’t get the grave or who were cremated what would be their fate. Use your reason. Don’t state the false and fabricated narratives which go against the Quran.

  • I’ve a question The reason why most Muslims are Muslims most Christians n Christians n so on is because they were born in that religion. Simply the truth!!!!!! It’s rare people change religion once born in a religion. Not common. So how is it fair that u know In your heart in your fairness that u won’t convert to any other religion cos u were born into it u expect others to do that too. Is Islam is real or Christianity is real doesn’t matter but isn’t unfair that which religion is the one true religion that it gives an unfair advantage to the one born in that religion as opposed to the one born in another religion. Cos just like u who’s conditioned to believe in your religion as the one since u were kids same goes to the kids born in other religions. How is that fair? How can I say that if I was born in a different religion I would still convert into the religion i believe in now. Cos saying that is a lie. Why weren’t humans all born in the same religion that is the true religion. Why give unfair advantage to some being born in which ever is the true religion n others in other religions. ? How is that fair? Tell me

  • Theres one thing i dont get. You’re in your grave and everything is fine but then the judgment day comes and you r being put through so much awful scary stuff like being naked and standing in your sweat, among people who r scared and bare as well and then the questioning begins and the sirat bridge happens. Like isnt it too bloody much if you already know you belong to jannah why all that hustle. Couldn’t righteous people be placed in jannah without all that horror inducing drama

  • My Opinion about islam is: that religion is based on beliefs, not on evidences or witnesses. Could prophets (Jesus, muhammad etc) prove any thing they told? Have anyone else seen allah, jibraeel paradise, hell etc.? Muhammad said and you just ‘believed’ in his stalk. How can you be sure that he wasnt telling you a liie that he got revelation? It’s not based on evidences but on beliefs, then how can you say that the base of the religion is strong? The people who still believe islam those people should tell me where is the paradise exactly?
