What is the difference between HeroQuest and advanced HeroQuest?
HeroQuest, an adventure board game, was initially created in 1989 by Milton Bradley and Games Workshop. In the same year, Advanced HeroQuest was released, which featured more complex rules, a modular board, and the use of henchmen. The game features heroes entering a Skaven-infested dungeon to retrieve a magical artifact. The miniatures set includes only Skaven-infested monsters, but statistics for all monsters are provided.
The game has a 64-page rule book, 42 plastic miniatures, 78 counters, and modular maps. It uses 12-sided dice for skill and combat resolution, and both heroes and monsters are defined by their respective skills.

Who are the main characters in HeroQuest?
HeroQuest is an adventure board game created by Milton Bradley in 1989 in collaboration with British company Games Workshop. The game features four heroes, including Barbarian, Dwarf, Elf, and Wizard, who face various monsters such as Orcs, Goblins, Fimir, Chaos Warriors, a Chaos Warlock, a Gargoyle, and various Undead creatures. The game system allows the gamemaster, Morcar or Zargon, to create dungeons of their own design using the provided game board, tiles, furnishings, and figures. The game manual describes Morcar/Zargon as a former apprentice of Mentor, and the parchment text is read aloud from Mentor’s perspective.
Game designer Stephen Baker moved from Games Workshop to Milton Bradley in the late 1980s, and he was allowed to develop a fantasy genre game by Roger Ford. He contacted Games Workshop to develop the plastic miniatures needed for the game, and then drew on their expertise in the fantasy game field to help develop the game. The game was released in Britain, Europe, and Australia in 1989, and the North American edition, with a different subtitle, was released in 1990.

How do you break spells in HeroQuest?
The spells mentioned in this text target Heroes but do not deal any damage. Tempest creates a whirlwind that envelops one Hero, causing them to miss their next turn. Command puts one Hero under Morcar/Zargon’s control, which can be broken by rolling one red die for each Mind Point. Fear reduces a Hero’s attacks to one combat die, and Sleep puts them into a deep sleep.
Furthermore, Firestorm creates a roomful of fire that inflicts 3 Body Points of damage on all Heroes and monsters in the same room with the spellcaster. Ball of Flame inflicts 2 Body Points of damage on any Hero, and the Hero rolls two red dice. For each 5 or 6 rolled, the damage is reduced by 1 point.
Chaos spells, such as Kellar’s Keep and Return of the Witch Lord, were already available in the game system but only used by Chaos Warlocks in the expansion sets. These spells can be broken by rolling one red die for each Mind Point.
How do known spells work?
A spell is a discrete magical effect that shapes the energies that suffuse the multiverse into a specific, limited expression. To use a spell, a spellcaster must have the spell firmly fixed in mind or have access to it in a magic item. Certain classes, like bards and sorcerers, have a limited list of known spells. Spellcasting is a crucial skill in fantasy gaming, and different character classes have unique ways of learning and preparing their spells. A spell is a discrete magical effect that can be unleashed in seconds by carefully plucking at invisible strands of raw magic, pining them in place, and setting them vibrating.

I used to have this as a kid in the 90s. Sister got me another old one as a gift as i had gotten rid of my old one. Lately ive been wanting to play games and no one to play with so i have been looking at all kinds of rpgs and solo rpgs. Bought pericle and ended up not liking it because its too complicated and you have to go to a website to play it. Then i recalled heroquest and how simple it is. And then i discovered there is an app so i dont have to log in to a site and i can effectively play heroquest solo Great game
This is an AMAZING article but I have one slight question / modification —– at 8:00, you mention when a Hero’s body points go down to ZERO. If that happens via a Monster attack, the ONLY way for the hero to survive is to use a Healing Potion (a hero CANNOT cast a healing spell in this case, b/c its not their turn, it’s the Monster’s turn.) If a hero’s body points go down to zero due to a TRAP, the hero can survive by using a Healing Potion OR by casting a Healing Spell if they have not already performed an action on that turn.
At 2:18 you show the picture about LOS to shoot an enemy, the rulebook doesn’t mention furniture but do furniture block LOS or just some of them? Let’s say if a monster is behing a cupboard it should block LOS but if he’s behind a table? i could see him but the rule would say that the table crosses LOS…
Hello there. Me and 3 of my friends as desperate for a dungeon explorer game. However with there just being 4 of us. We’re looking for a game without one of us being a DM (as we all wish to play together and not have a 3v1 situation) is there any chance this game could be played with 1 of us not being the DM? Have the DM actions being random? Thank you for any help!!
I’m confused about using a spell of healing if your character has died, in the rule book it states you can only use the spell of healing to save your life if you have not taken an action on your last turn. Does that mean you can only use the spell of healing to save your life if you only took the movement action and not attack action on your last turn?
Okay so kickstarter I had to pay bills and still am, Only doing pre season training now due to covid. Not getting full pay and was duped into taking a monthly bus pass out of my pay. I need to know why I would pay 129$ for base box and then another on an Ebay Bonus Box of 120-200$? I know kickstarter it was 149$ for Base+Bonus and both expansions. Please advise.
Can someone please help? I love the game. But the heroes have figured out that placing the barbarian at the entrance to the door protects all the other heroes from the monsters within. The monsters then have to attack one by one and get annihilated! How do you prevent this from happening? The challenge is gone! Thanks
great stuff… the quicker you can explain the basic rules the quicker you can get heroes on the board! some people think the game is too complicated others avoid it thinking it’s too simple, but we can meet in the middle and have a great time very easily. I love this game! Join our HQ community if you want here: discord.gg/X9Fyr3Vp we play on Twitch just about every weekend
