What Are Vedic Astrology’S “Sre Angle Houses”?

Vedic astrology uses a system of twelve houses to interpret different aspects of a person’s life, including family, career, health, and the ‘House of Body’. The first house, also known as the House of Self, is the starting point of the zodiac and is formed by the zodiac sign. The angular houses, which are houses 1, 4, 7, and 10, represent the basic needs and foundations of life.

The cusps of these houses are the angles of your chart – the Ascendant and Midheaven, and their counterparts, the Descendant and Nadir. These houses serve as the cornerstones of our astrological chart, shaping our identity, ambitions, relationships, and foundations. The angular houses are connected to the four angles, which are considered the “pivots” that hold the entire sky in place and prod the planets.

In astrology, the 12 houses, just like 12 zodiac signs, create the foundation for one’s life. Together, they form a 360° angle as the whole horoscope. The four pillars of your horoscope, lying on the horizon and meridian plane, are called Angular or Kendra houses. Each house governs some aspect of life, such as marriage, partnership, business, contracts, cooperation, and diplomacy.

In summary, Vedic astrology uses a system of twelve houses to interpret different aspects of a person’s life, including family, career, health, and the ‘House of Body’. The angular houses, also known as the cardinal houses, are the most ardent and have the greatest impact on the chart.

Today, we’re diving deep into the meaning of the 12 houses in astrology, but with a special focus on how these meanings apply …

What are the degrees of the houses in astrology?

The whole sign house system, also known as the “Sign-House system”, is a 30° house division system used in Hellenistic and Indian astrology. It is believed to be the oldest form of house division and may have been developed around the 1st or 2nd century BCE. The system was passed on to the Indian and early Medieval traditions of astrology, but its transmission to India from Western locales is contested.

In the Medieval period, around the 10th century, whole sign houses fell into disuse in the western tradition. By the 20th century, it was completely unknown in the western astrological community, but it was continually used in India until the 1980s and 1990s. The distinction between equal houses and whole sign houses lies in the fact that the cusp of the 1st house is the beginning of the sign that contains the ascendant, while in equal houses the degree of the ascendant is itself the cusp of the 1st house.

There is debate surrounding the claims that whole sign houses was the original form of house division and the dominant form among ancient astrologers. Some argue that it is never explicitly mentioned in the text of any ancient astrologer when explaining how to divide up the houses, while others argue that it breaks with principles of primary motion and demotes the value of angularity.

The whole sign house movement is argued to have decontextualized Hellenistic astrological texts from those that preceded and proceeded them. In Europe, most astrologers previously associated with traditional astrology never really took up whole sign houses. Martin Gansten argues that in Valens, houses were often provisionally approximated by sign position alone, but calculation of places by degree was consistently upheld in principle as more accurate and useful.

What is an angle house in astrology?

The angular houses, represented by houses 1, 4, 7, and 10, serve as the fundamental tenets of existence, encapsulating the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, and Nadir angles within the astrological chart. These houses are responsible for the most fundamental issues in life, and planets in these houses have additional strength and power.

What are the angular houses dominant?

Astrology charts feature 12 houses, each ruling different aspects of life. Houses of the same house type have similar energy, similar to zodiac signs and elements. The dominant house type is the one with the most natal planets in the natal chart.

Angular houses are linked to action, with cardinal signs like Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn leading. They are more likely to take initiative and speed things up. Succedent houses are linked to grounding, with fixed signs like Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. They are grounded, stable, and take more time, exercise caution, and build on past experiences.

Cadent houses are linked to fluidity, with mutable signs like Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces promoting fluid movement. When your dominant house type is cadent, you can ebb and flow with life, be constantly active, and be highly flexible.

What is angle in Vedic astrology?

In astrology, the term “angle” refers to one of the four angular houses, specifically the degree associated with that house. These houses are the ascendant and the 1st house, the midheaven and the 10th house, and the ecliptic and the 11th house. A planet in one of these houses is considered “in an angle” or “angular” in a chart. The term “angle” is used to describe the relationship between a planet and its corresponding house.

What are the angle houses in astrology?

An angular house, or cardinal house, is one of the four cardinal houses of the horoscope, which are the angles of the chart (Ascendant, Midheaven, Imum Coeli, and Descendant). These houses are considered the most ardent and have the greatest impact on the chart. They rule critical aspects of life, such as appearance, behavior, family life, married life, and career.

The first house, often the Ascendant, signifies a person’s personality and behavior, often overshadowing their Sun sign. For example, a person with Leo on the cusp of their first house and Virgo as their Sun sign can be dynamic and dramatic, but their fastidious, efficient, and self-effacing part may not be immediately apparent until pierced through the persona.

The fourth house, often the Imum Coeli, signifies a person’s home, security, family, and early life foundations. It is often associated with parents and has a more general parental significance in modern charts. In astrology, the angular houses play a crucial role in shaping a person’s life and career.

What are the angles and trines in Vedic astrology?

The traditional major aspects, also known as Ptolemaic Aspects, were defined by Ptolemy in the 1st Century AD and consist of the Conjunction (0°), Sextile (60°), Square (90°), Trine (120°), and Opposition (180°). Major aspects are those divisible by 10 and evenly divided in relation to 360°, except for the Semisextile and the Novile. Different astrologers and astrological systems use differing orbs, which are the degree of separation between exactitude.

Orbs may vary depending on the need for detail and personal preferences. Most astrologers use a larger orb for a Conjunction. In Harmonice Mundi, Johannes Kepler described 13 aspects, grouped together in five degrees of symbol ratios. Whole divisors are known as n-ile for whole fractions and m-n-ile for fractions. Semi-n-tiles are 2n-tiles, while Sesqui-n-tiles are Tri-2 n-tiles.

What is the most powerful house in the zodiac?

The term “succeedfrom” comes from the Latin word “succedere”, meaning to go up, follow after, succeed. In Christian Astrology, the angles are considered the most powerful, while the succedants are next in virtue. The cadents are poor and of little efficacy. The closer your Significator is to an angle, the more good you may expect; less, if placed in a Succeedant house; little, if in a Cadent.

In horary chart judgments, the nearer your Significator is to an Angle, the more good you may expect; less, if placed in a Succeedant house; little, if in a Cadent. Guido Bonatti compares the fixed signs to the middle months of each of the four seasons, in which the season is established and fixed in character. In the same way, the succedent houses, in the center of each quadrant, have a fixed character.

The second house is listed as the fourth weakest house in the chart. It signifies fear and anguish of mind. The estate or judgement concerning the estate or fortune, wealth or poverty, all removable goods, money lent, profit or gain, loss or damage.

Vettius Valens and Paulus Alexandrinus provide further insights into the concept of the house in natal astrology. The angular house, the cadent house, and the derivative house are all important aspects of the horary chart.

What are angular placements?

Angular houses are defined as houses 1, 4, 7, and 10, and are associated with the four cardinal signs. These signs are linked to the beginning of spring (1. Aries), summer (4. Cancer), and autumn (7.). As illustrated in the diagram, these houses possess an angular quality.

What do degrees tell you in astrology?

Zodiac signs and planets have astrological degrees in their birth charts, which provide meaning and depth to their hidden characteristics. For example, a sun falling at zero degrees Aries represents the true essence of the sign, while 29 degrees Aries may indicate a rush to evolve into something more significant or better. These degrees are crucial in understanding the complexities of a sign and enhancing the uniqueness of individuals and birth charts. For example, a zero degrees Aries person may embrace slow growth, while a 29 degrees Aries person may push for quick progress.

  • I feel very disconnected from my 10th House stellium (including both Luminaries). I’ve lived as a solitary hermit for six years and have no connection to society outside of my family (and I’m young). I’m just now coming to the end of a period of enormous personal change and because of that I’ll soon be reintegrating myself back into society, which won’t be easy or natural for me. I will say that I can see the 10th house in my long term goal of being self-employed and also wanting to set up a YouTube website at some point. But beyond that society holds little appeal.

  • Thank you Adam. I am an Aries rising, Capricorn sun in the 10th house, Libra moon. I am struggling to figure out my purpose in this life. It has been a power struggle within myself. I left a 20 yr career which if I am honest was just a really bad job in order to care for family members as well as myself. I have lost 4 family members in 11 months. I don’t want to say I am retired as I feel I have so much more to give or do.

  • Adam, your my favorite astrologer and articles like these remind me why I appreciate you so much. Although I was not one that was reaching out about this topic, I am recently forced into retirement due to disability. I have taken your first class and will continue to study with you. Thank you for who you are and how you contribute you specialness to the world! Blessings!🌸🐬🐞👍

  • Adam, this episode was so meaningful for me❤ . You are a wonderful teacher, and I am grateful to have found you as an astrologer at that stage in my life where I felt so lost and alone. In the last month, so much healing and grace has happened in my life that it is almost overwhelming. I have a sense of peace that far surpasses all understanding. I am truly grateful❤ Thank you again for this teaching as I head into the new chapter of my life, retirement, and being a grandma😊 And, today, it doesn’t get any better than hearing you say, ” Society.” I had to pause the article and laugh. Thank you for that! 😉

  • Fantastic episode, I’ve been deeply contemplating my Aries 10th house as a stay at home new mom. This episode has helped me understand the 10th in a whole new, and useful way! Thank you! Also, I literally laughed out loud when you yelled “SOCIETY!!” It’s been so long since that’s come up and it made me smile 😂

  • Thank you so much for this incredible insight vis a vis 4th house. I have a tiny wedge of Scorpio in the 4th and it becomes one leg of a Yod with Jupiter, North Node and Neptune jammed in -all quincunx my MC at 0 of Aries. Your talk has brought a little clarity since I picked up Astrology again since retirement. With Neptune R just at end of 9th -goals and aspirations arise and fizzle. This certainly brings a little clarity.

  • Great article! Thanks for this. I’m going to be retiring some time around the end of this calendar year. Currently in my 6h profection year, so I’ll will be entering my 7h profection next summer, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how the dynamic during this next chapter of my life will change, and unfold

  • What does it mean in general that the 10th house has the upper hand to the house of the self, and so on? There’s and overcoming square from every one angular house to the one on the right hand side of it. It’s especially interesting when for example there’s an out of sect malefic in the tenth squaring the Asc. It also would be interesting to have an episode about the 10th and 4th compared to Ic and Mc. I’ve tried to understand them from several sources, including nightlight year one, but it’s still a blur in my head. Sorry, I’m a boneheaded student 😅

  • The importance of trinal houses in Vedic astrology is discussed, specifically how the first, fifth, and ninth houses, known as the houses of goddess Lakshmi, are connected to one’s destiny and potential for success. Charts of famous individuals such as Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee are analyzed to illustrate this concept, along with emphasis on the power of planetary conjunctions and exchanges of nakshatras.
