Honestly, I think this is your best format!👏👏👏 Those sets reviews are really insightful and let you either reexperiment the set (nostalgiaaaa) or discover it. I feel you should you do more of those, there are great articles and you got lots of material to use. Can’t wait to hear about Avacyn Restored.🙌
Something I would add is that Dark Ascension has a much more restricted version of the color imbalance that we saw in Torment. Both of the utility lands in the cycle used black mana, black got an extra multi-colored mythic, there was no W/G lord or W/G mythic, and two non-black transform cards turned black. This was balanced in Avacyn Restored, where white was very slightly over-represented.
4:59 As someone who played Green/White Humans during the standard format that Dark Ascension came out to, the most relevant part of Gather the Townsfolk is that the tokens it made were humans. This was extremely relevant as there were still a bunch of cards legal from the Scars set, as well as Innistrad proper, that put some good buffs on to that type, and having two extra human tokens could actually win you the game in some circumstances. They also traded well due to how many one toughness creatures there were in the format, though they did get bricked by an Undying triggered Young Wolf. Later on, once RTR block had completely come out, Gather would be relevant again as part of a Junk (now known as Abzan) Aristocrats deck that would run the format for a bit because it was such a value heavy deck that had multiple ways of winning. The thing I most remember about Dark ascension, was that the format was awful if you weren’t playing some kind of control. Sorin could brick red decks very hard with his tokens having lifelink and with Lilianna coming down the turn before and either forcing a discard or a creature sac, it was very possible that Sorin could enter onto an empty field. And let me tell you, that was a genuinely terrifying prospect. This was also before Wizards decided that 4 mana boardwipes were too good, so there was a Wrath of God effect available in this format, and it would also be one of the last formats to have unconditional instant speed removal that cost less than three mana.
Dang, this brings me back. I got into Magic during Dark Ascension, I think just about when it was released. The first MTG product I ever bought was one of those intro decks, the Simic self-mill one with Ghoul Tree as the face card. I loved that big dumb tree. I remember suping that deck up, mostly by grabbing copies of the self-mill payoff creatures, and somehow swept FNM with the deck. I tried it again the next week and got utterly wrecked; so it goes. Good times.
So, immurwolf was really odd in regards to its interaction with other playable werewolves of the meta. The biggest issue is that the best werewolf was hands down huntmaster of the fells, which you actively wanted to flip back and forth, so a lord effect that actively prohibits that made the wolf on the outside looking in for its constructed run. It was okay in draft, but everything kinda just folded to spirits
