Which Union Is Rite Aid A Member Of?

Rite Aid workers have ratified a new three-year contract, joining their counterparts at CVS stores who voted in support of their similar pact last week. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.2 million essential workers across North America, has reached a tentative agreement with Rite Aid after months of bargaining and an imminent strike in late June. The contract includes annual three percent raises and a dollar per hour wage.

Hundreds of Local 5 members working at Rite Aid Drug Stores will receive backpay checks from Rite Aid thanks to an arbitrator’s ruling in August that the company is bankrupt. A federal judge said on Thursday that union officials don’t have the right to be involved in potential bids for the bankrupt pharmacy chain Rite Aid Corp.

The UFCW Local 5 members working at Rite Aid locations in Southern California, along with members of the 1199SEIU Training and Education Fund, have reached a tentative agreement with Rite Aid. The contract is fully recommended by the Rite Aid member bargaining committee and includes pay, union help, and access to programs run by the 1199SEIU Training and Education Fund.

In their four-year legal battle with Rite Aid, UFCW 8-Golden State has won their case at every step and on every company appeal. Each UFCW member belongs to a local union that serves their specific area.

Why did Rite Aid fail?

Rite Aid, a leading pharmacy chain, has experienced a decline in its market share due to rising healthcare costs and stagnant revenue. The company’s debt has accumulated nearly $3 billion in net losses since 2018, limiting its ability to invest in store renovations. The rise of online threats from Amazon and in-store pharmacies at major chains like Walmart and Kroger further undermined Rite Aid’s competitiveness.

Fitch Ratings analyst David Silverman explains that the company’s limited ability to invest in improvements led to its continued decline. However, the pandemic provided Rite Aid with a temporary boost in business through COVID vaccine sales, which in turn boosted sales of other items.
